[Update] 62 Days in jail, Mistaken identity

    Original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/9skxh8/i_was_arrested_kept_in_jail_for_62_days_and_then/?utm_source=reddit-android

I've spoken to several attorneys and law firms throughout the state and have settled on one and signed the papers and all that stuff today. I want to thank all of you for giving me advice on what to ask and look for when speaking to them all, it really helped in narrowing it down and figuring out who was the best to go with. I can't really give out a whole lot of information because we are just starting to gather all the pieces and put it all together. There most likely will not be any updates to this for quite some time.

To answer the endless messages I received about race, I am white and early 20's, the person I was misidentified as is also white but in his 30's.

I spoke to my boss and HR and will be back at work very soon and 2 months pay advance that will be paid back with OT. Also my landlord was really nice and is letting me pay the back rent over the next few months in installments.

Recent ex works at a newspaper and ran a full page story about me being a pedophile, it's just revenge

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 01:46 AM PDT

So I broke up with my girlfriend of 6 years, about to be engaged when I found out she cheated on me. A friend linked me a video clip of her on a cam site being intimate with a guy on our couch. I moved all my stuff out while she worked and sent her a text saying goodbye and a link to the video. She starts apologizing and claims it was to help her male friend make money, then once that didn't work she claimed he forced her and I should protect her better and at this point I blocked her number.

This was on Friday of last week, today I start getting texts and phone calls from my older relatives and friends who read the paper asking me wth is going on. I'm lost and don't know what they are talking about so I take a break at work and grab a newspaper, sure enough there is a full page story with my Facebook profile picture saying I am a pedophile and should be locked up.

I call the newspaper and speak to the highest up person I can speak to and ask him what the hell is going on and why is this in the paper. He apologizes and promises to print a front-page retraction tomorrow. Also I found out from a mutual friend of hers that she was escorted out of the building and fired at the end of the day around 5 hours after I called them.

How does libel or slander work for something like this? I googled it and one of the main ways to avoid it is to retract it and the paper said they will post a retraction tomorrow, technically today it's so late. Is this something I report to the police against her or is it purely a civil matter? I'm in Indiana. Also should I unblock her and ask her what the hell or so I just not so that if I am going to pursue other legal options?

Mom wont allow me to apply to colleges more than 45 min away and. I have been doing them in secret.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 05:52 AM PDT

Then came the residency section and as a dependent i have to have her fill it out but she wont let me apply to any schools but the ones she approves. So i tricked her i to giving me her info (liscnese and voter registration) by saying its for a schlarship. When i asked for it she threatened me saying that she must be there when i am fillng out applications so she can see where i am applying to. I did it anyway and also memorized amd recorded my ssn and some of her other info.ater im sneaking into the car to get her registration info for than for extra proof. Her reasoning is that "I am not an adult when the law says, I am when she says" she wants to maintain control of me nd threarens me if i want to go farther. Am i committing a crime ? Is there any other way ? Am i doing soemthing wrong ? Help me get out please. Edit: I live in the U.S. and I am 17 years of age

Edit 2: I wanted to add that she is suing my father (who lives in France) for child support. I havent seen him since the age of 4 and I dont even remember that. He is fairly wealthy and I feel the monet could help me escape. Do you all think it would be worth it to lay low and wait it out ? The trial is almost over there are just a few translations to be made. Im Haitian-American and she threatens to use voodoo to strike me if i disobey (not screwing with u guys) and from a young age ive been socialized to believe it is real and have seen some instances with ny own eyes. I have a gripping oaranoia and fear that she can get me even if I go. This is fear i live in everyday and everytime i think of leaving. Theres not much you guys can do about that part but iw anted to provide some more context on why I so scared. I may sound ridiculous to u but it is very real to me and im terrified.

Edit 3: thank you all for your help im so grateful this sub exists and you all gave me some greta advice. Ill keep you all updated on my college amd escape if you'd like. Thank you and sorry its so complicated

Thrown out of class for not Pledging Alliance to the Flag. [TX]

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 08:57 AM PDT

There was a substitute for my regular teacher today and she told me to get out her class for not wanting to pledge allegiance to the flags.

Not sure if she's allowed to do that.

Very confused on what to do now.

I have her again tomorrow and probably gonna get thrown out again.

I know it was about the pledge because She said "No Pledge no Class, Get Out".

My mother fraudulently used a Durable POA (that I had revoked months prior - not sure how she pulled this off - & she will not say) to authorize our shared Investment Manager to perform a bank sweep of my entire personal savings & investment account...

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 07:49 AM PDT

...at Schwab. This is money I've lived off of for almost a decade, only pulling from when necessary. The money now resides in a new account, still under my name, but I have zero access to it. She certainly can't have access to it, right? I've made it very clear that there is no longer a valid POA to all parties multiple times (per Schwab's advice to 'protect myself'). Schwab has been kind, indicated that the fraud department would have to open an investigation, but I can't say they've been helpful. I've been promised, twice, a return phone call with an update from the fraud team. Calls never come. So far, nothing has happened.

My mother also says she is not required to provide me with any of my personal documents she has in her safe (I'm 27!) and will not give me my birth certificate, ss card, tax returns, contracts I've signed(or she's forged, who knows), copies of trusts, even the real estate docs and inspection report on a house she had bought but was not taking care of, so she asked me to buy it from her earlier this year because she had nothing liquid to pay her taxes with (so she says) and she knew I happened to have just around a liquid $1.5M to purchase it. So I wrote her a check. That was when I used to trust my mother.

I live in this house now. Oh look, a few more spots of black mold appeared overnight. Super.

I'm so sorry if this is too lengthy, I can explain why I believe my mother is doing these things but I didn't think it was necessary. Just ask.

Thank you so much in advance if you take the time to read this and respond thoughtfully with any kind of information you think would help me, I do realize I will probably most certainly have to hire a lawyer. Thoughts? Thank you again.

Gardener is getting sued for a clients dog eating palm tree seeds

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 11:42 AM PDT

Hi there! My dad has been a landscaper for 25+ years. He is getting sued for the first time for $5000 by a client that claims he is responsible for his new dogs urgent care fees. The puppy ate seeds (palm tree little orange seeds) and the owner claims it was my dads fault for not picking up all of the seeds. My dad had recently talked with the client about how he doesn't work on palm trees but the client still requested it. Unfortunately his dog found some left over palm tree seeds and ate one, leading to his urgent care. The fees ended up being $5000 and he's suing my dad. What help can my dad get? Does this person have a legit case? Some people need to be more responsible for their expensive puppies. That dog could of ate a grass, tree bark, seeds, dirt and the person would still blame it on my dad being his fault for not keeping his yard perfect for his puppy.

What can happen to me? I gave birth control to my best friend because she was sleeping with her ex-boyfriend and they wanted to be safe. We are both 17. Her mom found out and she’s threatening to file charges against me and her ex.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 07:35 AM PDT

Here's some background: Her mom is a psychotic, and controlling freak. Every so often she demands that my friend show her all the social media and tries to find out everything in her personal life. This usually results in her being severely punished due to whatever she found out, and my friend goes through severe emotional distress.

Living with her mom is actually putting her mental health at risk, and she's been trying to save up and move out. She'd like to be emancipated but we have have no clue about the process to achieve that.

Her mother is threatening her ex-boyfriend (he's 19 years old) as well, but if the sex is consensual, is she still able to file charges against him? She texted me this morning saying. "I will be coming to your house and speaking to your mom about you getting birth control for my daughter." This terrifies me because my mom would NOT appreciate a random woman coming to our house and threatening me. I have prescribed birth control, and my best friend asked me if I could order some extra for her to have. I agreed, and gave her two month's worth of them. She was going to pay me back this Saturday, and because of her mom, i definitely won't be seeing her then.. so did I technically not sell it to her?

I appreciate anyone who read this. I care so much about my friend's wellbeing, and I absolutely don't want charges filed against me.

Any advice would help! EDIT: I live in North Carolina

I found my background check in the staff break room.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 05:59 AM PDT

I had recently rehired at my job and while preparing documents I found my background check in the all staff breakroom in a binder. It had my full name, address, ssn, etc. I'm not sure who else had seen it or if anything was done with my information. I addressed the issue with hr but aside from that nothing was done. I assume that it made its way to that binder by being left on or near the printer and just getting lost in the shuffle, but it's very disconcerting. Have I any legal recourses in this situation? Or should I forget about it?

    Edit; Location Tennessee.

[UK] Is there any way I can stop the BBC from harassing me?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 04:22 AM PDT

Hello, I live in the UK and it seems every month I get a letter from the BBC threatening to fine me if I don't get a TV licence. And every month I phone them and tell them I don't need one.

I've already had one of their enforcers at my house going through each room, which made me very uncomfortable.

Is there any way to make them stop? It's incredibly stressful when they keep threatening me with court and fines.

    Thank you for reading.

Edit: thank you for all your suggestions. The BBC have really been stressing me out with this.

UPS Package Signed and Delivered to Random Person

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 08:30 AM PDT

So yesterday I had a package "delivered" by UPS that required a signature and it was delivered to someone who signed "smiley." To be clear my name is not smiley. It's nothing like smiley. The name on the box is very clearly not smiley. Apparently this man was just standing outside and was allowed to sign and take my package worth ~$300. What can I do to get my money back? UPS said they would look into it but that's it. It seems very obvious that UPS is responsible for this. I'm also not the only one who was subject to this. A few people had their packages taken by "smiley" yesterday.

I've had similar issues with UPS as well in the past. In August I was halfway across the country when a package was delivered and supposedly signed by me. Thankfully my neighbors are all nice and the package was still there the next day that time.

A party I was at got out of control and a fight started. A girl at the party is accusing me of punching her when I know for sure that I did not.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 11:01 AM PDT

    This takes place in Indiana

A party I was at got out of control and a fight broke out. This girl has posted on Facebook my name and my pictures with a caption similar to "Girls in university of reddit area, look out for OP because he punches women. He is a woman beater, please share this with his future employers and spread the word".

I was not concerned and only interacted with her through Facebook messenger to try and get the post taken down explaining that it was a misunderstanding and it was not me who hit her. Today I have people coming up to me telling me that I am famous. I am worried and would like to know what I can do legally to put out the fire. Thank you in advance.

Families life threatened by eBay user

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 12:10 PM PDT

I'm located in Virginia, but this took place on eBay. Seller lives in a different state.

I purchased an item for $9 from a seller on eBay that was listed as "New," but it was clearly used/damaged when I received it. I contacted the seller for a refund, and supplied pictures of the damage, but I never heard from them. eBay recommends to contact them after a certain amount of time without a response from the seller, so I did. eBay gave me a refund for the damaged item, and that was supposedly the end of it. I left a negative review on the sellers account so that others won't be sent used/damaged items from this user. This was back in August, and I still keep getting messages from the seller asking for me to remove the negative feedback, return the item, and give them money back. None of these things were required of me by eBay, so I kept explaining to the seller that I wasn't going to do any of those things because he basically scammed/ lied to me. All of the messages were pretty civil between the seller and I, and I stopped responding to them hoping that they would give up. After some time, I received another message from the seller yesterday. I responded to this message asking them to please stop harassing me with messages or I would be forced to report them to eBay.

Then, I get this message from the seller:

"Stop scam me, u didn't return my product, u got refund. I will report ebay and I will come ur home. Ur family will happy see me with a knie"

I called eBay, and they shut down the sellers account, and provided me a phone number for my local Police to call so they could get the sellers name and address. I contacted PayPal because the seller has access to my name and address through their service, and they flagged the sellers account. The seller will need to contact them about it. I also called the local police, but they didn't take the printouts I had of all the conversations and information, and basically dismissed me and said "Well, it's not like we can extradite the eBay user from the sellers state to VA." I don't think they called eBay to get the sellers information. PayPal recommended I file a complaint at IC3.gov. I'm not really sure what my next steps are. Should I contact my local Police department again to see if they will follow up, and should I file a complaint with the IC3.gov? Usually I wouldn't care about this on the internet, but in this case the seller has my full name and address.

Edit: I updated some info to make my post more clear.

Found an adult video of my SO and I online released without consent.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 02:41 PM PDT

The current situation I am in is a fairy tale chapter flipped into a nightmare. Last night I was browsing through adult websites and I happened to stumble upon a video thumbnail of what seems to look like my exact body type. 30 seconds into watching the video and I am almost certain it is me. A little backstory before I get into details.

My SO and I went on a trip last year and rented a room through AirBnB. I took 3 short clips through my cellphone during the trip and deleted them the day of. This was the first time we have ever done this before and we were curious so we experimented as most couples usually do to spice things up.

Now after finding these clips have been uploaded online I started to do a little investigating myself. I looked up the uploader's account name and google searched him. It seems like there were multiple videos uploaded under that username on many different websites. It wasn't just mine alone that was uploaded. There are more uploads of adult videos of other couples as well in the same AirBnB room. I recognize the layout of the room and the positioning of the furnitures as well. I tried to think about how it was even possible to access the videos via my phone and I remembered that I was connected to the wifi provided to us from the AirBnB host as well. Obviously at that point the first person to blame is the host for the AirBnB room so I logged in to the AirBnB website to try and contact the host but to my surprise when I click on my recent trips it isn't listed there anymore as a part of our trip history. Now I have no way of contacting this person, no way of finding out information on the user who uploaded the videos and there are other couples besides myself as well who have been victimized by this.

I know there are options for short term solutions, like requesting the website to remove the video, but the biggest concern for me is that it didn't just happen to me. This is an on going crime with multiple victims and even with the removal of the videos the uploader still has access to them at any time.

If there are any legal solutions that I can begin immediately it would greatly help me move forward through this situation. I don't know what to do anymore and I haven't even told my SO yet. Thank you for your time and help.

People park behind my driveway. All. The. Time.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 06:00 AM PDT

So I'm 100% sure if this is a good sub for this question but I just have no idea how to handle this. Also please forgive format as I am on mobile.

My boyfriend and myself live in a triplex and since we are the only ones with two cars, we have the privilege of getting to use the driveway. (We live on a very narrow brick street that gets quite full of cars parked on it)

We've been here over a year and I've had so many issues with people thinking it's okay to park behind our driveway, sometimes when my car is there sometimes not. (My bf's car is usually always there)

I thought that not blocking someone's driveway was just common courtesy but I guess not. Is there anything I can possibly do to prevent this from happening?

Edit: I live in a relatively populated city in Florida

[CAN] Got server a cease and desist letter from my ex-boyfriend, for things I didn't do. What do I do now ?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 09:49 AM PDT

I'M IN CANADA BTW IN CASE OTHER BOTS DON'T NOTICE THE [CAN] IN THE TITLE POST AND THE CANADA FLAIR

As the title say, I got served a cease and desist letter from a lawyer representing my ex-boyfriend and his girlfriend.

The letter orders me to cease immediately and permanently all form of communication and intimidation attempts towards both of them. It also order me to cease spreading "false rumours" about him being a pedophile and a sexual predator. The letter also said that the lawyer is in possession of all documents and threats sent to them, and that a police file had been opened.

The thing is, I didn't do anything of it. None at all. So far, I haven't been contacted by the police.

For context, my ex dumped me two years ago, for his mistress (now girlfriend). I took it very badly, got terribly drunk and spent the night texting him the nastiest shit. I'm not proud of it, and two years in, my reaction cause me way more pain than the breakup ever did.

I sent him only one text afterwards, to tell him I was sending back all his stuff left at my place and that I apologized for how I acted that night, and for everything I said. His only reply was "get lost, she's everything you'll never be, don't ever contact me again".

So I did just that. Blocked all his numbers on my phone, blocked him, his family and his friends on social media. Changed my door locks, put our pictures in a hidden folder on my backup HDD and went on with my life, as painful at it was. And I moved on, honestly. I started dating again a bit later, still single but I regularly see other people and hang out with my friends.

But now there's this damn letter. I called the lawyer yesterday, to explain it wasn't me, surely there must be some kind of error (or payback... but for what ?). The guy was polite, but firm. He explain his clients are persuaded it's me, and strongly suggest I stop "my little games" because frankly, after two years, it's time I let it go. I asked if I could get a copy of what was sent. He agreed to send me a "sample". The "sample" is over 100 pages long. There's dozen and dozen of emails sent from throwaways accounts to them and their employers. There's hundreds of Facebook messages sent to his family and friends. There's a shit ton of SMS sent from "unknown numbers" to him and his boss, that after investigation are all prepaid cell phone numbers that were deactivated soon after. There's also some physical mail they got. Then their house door was tagged one night with a big "pedo" on it. Their tires were slashed and his car tagged with a big "pervert". His employer shop was also tagged as "pedo works here". Those are the three events that lead to the complaint at the police. Their case officer suggested a cease and desist letter as a first step.

In the police deposition affidavit my ex wrote, he said I regularly used throwaway emails (true, I do whenever I sign up for something I don't want to use my real email address, such as mobile games or forums) and that I regularly use prepaid SIM cards as throwaways (again true, I'm a landlord and get a throwaway phone number whenever I list a unit, to keep the spam calls contained). The numbers area code also match my area, but that's like what, half a million people ? They also wrote they regularly see my vehicle "roaming around at night or near her daughter school". I drive a silver Honda Civic, there's thousand of cars like mine on the road. Plus I never even went back to the general area where he lives (a whole 2h drive from my place).

Also even more scary, the person harassing them know some very specific things about me, and things that happened during our relationship. Some of them are things only between me and him, I don't know how some rando could possibly know it.

So the lawyer said that if I can prove it's not me, they'll be more than happy to stop procedures against me. But in the meantime, I should just stop harassing them because I will destroy my life, not theirs... I'm now convinced they really think it's me.

Now... how do I prove I didn't do something ? Most emails and texts were sent in the evening/night, when I'm usually alone at home. I know some nights I were, say, at my crossfit class, when the text was sent, but how do I prove that I was there on some random Wednesday from last year ? How do I prove I didn't roam at night around their place ? How do I prove I didn't do all those things that are incredibly similar to things I'm known to do (minus the harassment part)

And before anyone suggest it, no, I don't have a mental illness, I am not subject to depersonalization, nor do I have CO2 poisoning.

    • Edit : I know the cease and desist letter means nothing. But I am convinced the harassment will not stop, I am convinced the cops will get involved since it's pretty serious allegations, and I want to prepare myself for when the cops come knocking at my door. I know my ex. He will pursue legal actions as soon as possible. He cannot stand not being right, and if he's convinced I'm the one doing it, he will do everything he can to get me to "pay" for it.

    • Edit 2 : A police officer showed up at work. There were new emails sent last night. I explained I had receive the CD letter, that I am not the one doing it, and currently waiting back on my lawyer before proceeding. He gave me his card and said he want to speak with me after I'm done with my lawyer. He wants "my side of the story". No one from the pro bono place called me back, I called again and they said I should get a call back in 48-72h. I'm taking the rest of the afternoon off and going to a paid lawyer. I called my parents and they're lending me money to pay for it.

Boss harassing me in middle of night and not paying employees

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 12:40 PM PDT

I work for a company in Oregon and recently we had a new manager come onto our team. She is an alcoholic who dabbles in drugs. She openly tells us this all the time and calls everyone who is of Hispanic descent "brown" on the crew, she even wrote it onto of the records she gave me to show some payment. They haven't paid the employees in 3 weeks including the ones who have quit do the new bosses personality issues. Last night she decided to text me at 11pm while drunk and verbally abuse/demean me for an hour even when I was not replying, I quit on the spot and now they will not reply or pay me and my coworkers. I'm curious what all I could do in a situation like this?

US Customs claimed I had drugs, charged me a massive fine with no proof given. Now, every time I re-enter the country I’m “flagged” and taken through special security. Anyway I can get this removed from my “record”?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 09:35 AM PDT

To add some detail: I was coming back from a two week trip in NZ and AUS through San Francisco airport. As I was going through customs to re enter (this is the point where they separate us and non us citizens and ask where and what you've been doing in said country, then they sign your re-entry form that you're given on the plane and move you through)I was stopped and moved to the side for extra screening. Thinking I was randomly selected they started digging through my bag, and said they found "weed", sprinkled in the bottom of my bag. Now, mind you, I'm no saint, but I'm not stupid enough to try to sneak drugs into the country. And my bag they were searching was brand new prior to leaving the country, so I knew there was nothing in there. They ran a "test" and said it was positive for marijuana.

Several things happened after that: 1. I asked to see the test - they came back with a piece of paper that had an X on it, when I said, I don't understand how that works, they replied "it doesn't matter if you understand" 2. They proceeded to interrogate me about previous and current drug use. 3. I was searched 4. Missed both of my flights 5. When I asked about calling a lawyer or family member I was told I couldn't 6. I asked if I was being charged for something - they said no

Then, the next step is where shit got weird. They said it would be a $5000 fine unless I filled out a form that "admitted guilt." I said, "I don't have any guilt to admit, but they would drop the fine down to $500 if I filled out the form. So I wrote on the form "I'm sorry I didn't know there was weed in my bag".

They dropped the fine down to $500, because of this form (that they wouldn't let me take a photo of, get a copy of, or send to my lawyer prior to filling out). I asked what would happen if I didn't have the money to pay, and they said I would stay there until I did. So I put it on a card and walked away.

Now, I'm willing to put this behind me, it's only $500, but when I re-entered the country from Belize I was flagged and brought to special screening AGAIN. The customs agent said this could happen perpetually since I'm now "flagged." Im truly afraid that I will be put into this position again, and I'm scared of what will happen next time.

Notes: I've already contacted US customs twice to try and get a copy of the form I signed/filled out, to no avail.

I really want this off of my "record." Anyone have any advice for doing so?

Additional notes: I asked several times if I was free to leave, and was regularly told no. In addition, I asked for my lawyer several times and they told me I was unable to contact him. The only phone call I could make was to my friend who I was traveling with to let her know I wasn't getting on my flight. And they monitored me while on the phone.

Additional notes: I AM a US citizen.

Additional notes: I was not read my miranda rights and I was not charged with a crime. There is no mention of this on my record.

After receiving my final rent payment (that was late), my old landlord began eviction progress. I was already moved out of apartment and was paying the remainder of lease. I called the courthouse who referred me to their lawyer who explained that case would be dismissed, as I had paid late fees with the final payment. I was told filing fees would be taken from my security deposit.

Today, I recieved a one page letter stating I owe the complex 68 cents, after legal fees. There is no breakdown of these costs, and I don't believe the cost of paperwork alone was the full amount of my deposit. We never went to court.

Are they legally required to give me a copy of fees incurred by filing for that eviction? In the past, I had recieved itemized lists for keeping portions of security deposits (nail holes in walls, etc). Is this a different procedure?

They are asking I respond within 7 days.

Company bought out, they want me to sign this NDA

The document is labeled as a Non-disclosure Agreement, but I am concerned there are elements that represent a Non-compete. I have a very specialized skillset and I don't want to limit my ability to find work in this industry. Can somebody read this and tell me if this would prevent me from finding similar work? I have until 5pm to sign this or I do not have a job. I very much like what I do and want to continue working here, but I don't want to screw myself if I end up leaving my current company.

    Thanks

TX - Dad died with no will. Do his kids have any legal rights to his property?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 11:00 AM PDT

We all live in Texas, all property mentioned is in Texas. My dad died without a will. He was remarried and his wife refuses to probate his estate. They bought two houses together after they got married. One of them they lived in at the time of his death, both names were on the mortgage, and the bank has already been in touch with his heirs about signing paperwork to sell it. The other house is entirely paid off and they put it in only her name to try to hide it from a child support lien (25 years ago). They weren't able to hide it and it did get a child support lien against it but that was years ago and my understanding is that liens fall off eventually even if they aren't paid.

I've tried looking in the tax records for the house to see if my dad's name was ever added to the deed, but it's in the country so it doesn't have a normal street address - they used a PO box. I'll spare the details of the drama, but his wife has already been exceptionally shady about how she is handling things and has not honored a single one of my father's wishes. I wouldn't put it past her to try to sell the house and hope that it doesn't get caught up in his estate if it is still in only her name.

I don't really have much money. I am not trying to force her to sell her house even if that's possible. Is there something easy/affordable I can do so that all of his heirs are included if/when she tries to sell the house?

I was an anonymous sperm donor in my early 20’s. I have been contacted by parents of two of the children. What can I do?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 05:10 PM PDT

They are nice people, but this is not what I agreed to. I thought that it was a good thing to do and (of course), needed money at the time. I'm still glad that I did it, but they contacted me through Facebook, and forced pictures on me. It has been traumatic for my partner and I, and I want to do something about it. Any ideas?

Edit: this was at a well-known "international sperm and egg bank" in NYC. Also, those of you saying to just block, that doesn't rectify violating an agreement.

Neighbor’s unsupervised children came into our backyard. Our dog jumped on them, knocked one over, and now the family is trying to label my dog as aggressive.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 03:13 PM PDT

    Hi Reddit!

I have a three year old mutt who has never had any aggression issues at all since I have had her. I recently moved into a new home and had the back yard fenced in. On top of that, I also put an underground electric fence that circles the whole property so that I could have her in the front yard with her without wandering off.

Our next door neighbors have two sons, seven and nine who have been problems since we moved in. I have had to go over multiple times to their parents asking them to please not let their children hang over the fence and taunt my dog. They've left toys in front of my driveway and in my yard. Furthermore, if I have Tobi in the front yard with us, they will try to taunt Tobi over. Tobi is never allowed in the front yard without supervision.

Anyways, today I got home from work, let Tobi into the backyard like always while I started dinner. I have a window into my backyard from my kitchen so I have always felt comfortable letting Tobi back there while I'm in the house. However, I cannot see the gate leading into the backyard.

Those kids decided to come over through my gate and into my backyard. Now, my driveway is concrete, then gate, then grass. Tobi is not a perfect dog, he has a jumping habit that we are working on. Tobi jumped on the seven year old, knocked him onto the concrete. Initially, when I saw Tobi running into the corner, I thought there was a bird or a squirrel and then I heard screaming. Tobi was not growling, he was wagging his tail. I see the kid is injured, I tell his brother to get his mom, and I put Tobi back into the backyard and shut the gate.

Mom comes over starts freaking out. She's claiming that Tobi is aggressive, he needs to be put down, he is not safe for a family neighborhood and that I will be responsible for their medical bills. I told her, "You should bring your son to the urgent care and we can discuss this later." I also gave her my number. I did not agree to anything.

Anyways, kid is getting three to four stitches and may or may not have a concussion. I'm scared for Tobi. I'm scared for my bank account. Can I really be held liable their medical bills despite the fact that their son came into my yard without permission? Can Tobi be taken away from? Obviously, I'm panicking a little because I love this damn dog and I don't know what to do. I'm in Indiana.

Fiancee (46f) and myself (50m) broke up, living in my house - if I move out, am I screwed?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 05:01 AM PDT

I'll try to make this brief. My fiancee and I (and her three kids) have lived in this house for 2 1/2 years. We broke up a few weeks ago, but she needs to find work and a place to live, which does take time, and I want to be fair. My home is in California, and I would like to move back there ASAP. But, while I have no overt reason to think she'd "squat" or damage the property, if I moved home, does she had increased rights to stay as long as she wants? She is saying she needs 30-60 days income to prove income for a leaving office at an apartment or condo. So, this could drag out much longer, theoretically, into January. But, for obvious reasons, living together is not healthy and causing me significant anxiety and other issues. If I do move home at the end of the month, do I lose any rights? Are there other concerns?

Edit: I am in Virginia. Also I own the house. My ex pays no rent.

Edit 2: From my brother, who is a real estate developer: "I promise you, you do not want to move out while they are there. A huge part of my life for the past 18 years has been extensive legal. I'm comfortable debating law with attorneys at this point based on my experience. You have to stay in the house until they leave. A mother and 3 children will always get the the benefit of a stay in court, or worse, they will get extensions and stall for an extended period of time. This is standard operating procedure for this stuff. I couldn't get XXX legally out of the house Mom and Dad bought them for 3 years.

Your relationship with YYY, as cordial as it may be, mean's nothing here as this is legal + perception, and lawyer stalling could drag this out. Think squatter's rights at the simplest level.

Nobody likes divorces or separations and unfortunately this is one of the ugly realities that you have to work through. Running from it will cause you more consternation and money, I guarantee you this.

If you want to speak with a lawyer, see if you can issue her a notice to vacate within 60 days.".

[OH] Friend being asked to confirm my identity for new employment

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 10:31 AM PDT

I just got a job through a recruiter. The client my recruiter found wanted me to start ASAP so the recruiter sent me my I-9, background check, and drug screening information to be completed the following day. I filled out all the forms and asked if I will need to bring my passport to work with me to verify my identity. The recruiter said that they would just need a close friend or family member's email address and they would send them a link to follow which will confirm my identity. I thought it would be some odd questionnaire or something. I gave them my best friend's email since he was with me when I was going over all of this.

He received the link along with a username and temp password. Once he logged in he was greeted with all my information. As in address, phone number, full uncensored social, and passport number. At the end, it said that he was verifying my identity for my recruiter and if anything is falsified, it is considered a federal crime.

Is this even legal? To have a friend or family member confirm your identity in this way for employment? It just seems really sketchy.
