Posted: 05 Nov 2018 08:32 AM PST This happened in Ontario, Canada. So this past Friday, our entire apartment building was evacuated after a "bum like person" (landlady's words) broke into the building and busted a gas pipe at around midnight. I found out about it the next night at work (I work across the street from our building and we're open pretty late) when my coworker asked where my boyfriend and I were the night before. He filled me in on what had happened and that everyone was outside, there were fire trucks, cops, the works. For more context, on the 24th of October a fire marshal inspected our alarm that's connected to the building and said it needed to be replaced. It has yet to be replaced and when my boyfriend confronted our landlady via text she refused to give us a copy of order for our replacement alarm, blamed us for not hearing the commotion and waking up (I sleep with ear plugs and boyfriend is a heavy sleeper) didn't apologize, and told us if we don't feel comfortable she'd make arrangements for us to move out. All we asked for was the alarm for our unit. Luckily neither us or our cats are hurt or anything, but if the gas leak had been anymore serious we could've died in our sleep that night. Boyfriend's dad is a real estate agent and the first thing he cited was the law that landlords need to have an evacuation plan for all tenants and units. I dislike confrontation and feel like we were too harsh in our texts, but we could have died if it were more serious. My dad is telling me to report the landlady to the tenant tribunal or the fire department. But I don't know. Came here for advice from third parties or someone who knows more about tenant law in Ontario. EDIT: More direct questions; should we pursue action and report? If we do pursue reporting them, could they evict us? I know it wouldn't be legal for them to evict us over reporting them, but the fear is still in my mind. I could also post the screen shots of the text conversation if anyone would like to read them. TLDR: Boyfriend and I were only tenants not evacuated during a gas leak and landlady refuses to acknowledge the seriousness of the situation. Basically told us she'd rather us move out than fix our alarm. EDIT: formatting and grammar [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Nov 2018 05:18 PM PST I'm 17 and live in Ontario Canada. My mom is abusive and mentally ill. She kicked me out, told me to "call your grandparents, or I'm giving you to Dad", my dad lives 20 hours away and is a physically abusive alcoholic. Time passes and my aunt picks me up. Then after a day of staying with her and my grandma police show up at the door. They apparently kidnapped me I guess. Mom said my grandma smokes cannabis and I'm in an unsafe environment. Thing is my grandma is on oxygen and is actually allergic to cannabis (it's also not even illegal anymore), so the officer leaves without any worry of my safety. Next day two officers show up, my mom apparently went to a "Justice of the Peace" and swarm in that I was danger to myself and others. I get put in the back of a Cruiser, I have a genuinely nice conversation with the officer and explain what's going on. Told I'm a "respectful, smart, and mature kid. This kind of stuff happens more often than you think" we get to the hospital and I wait for 4 hours in triage. I talk to the psychiatrist and basically get screened and sent home in 5 minutes. My mom has since then filed a missing persons case on me, continuously tried to contact me, talked about messing up my class schedule with the principal. Is there anything I can do to get her to leave me alone? Edit: I appreciate all the answers, I will be considering a cease and desist as due to recommendation. I'm not concerned about this tread being locked as I had many responses and lots of support. I really appreciate everyone here! [link] [comments] |
Landlord says they are not responsible if items go missing while showing Condo [FL] Posted: 05 Nov 2018 04:27 AM PST So my roommates and I are moving out at the end of the month. Landlord sent us all an email yesterday and let us know about showings of the condo. She also let us know that we are to leave the condo while real estate agents are showing their clients (I work from home). She also said to hide anything we don't want to be stolen because they are not responsible if anything gets stolen. I think that is kind of ridiculous, I'm sorry you are the one inviting strangers into my home, not me. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Nov 2018 10:49 AM PST Back in February of this year I received a bill for emergency room services provided by a hospital in Atlanta Georgia in January. Problem is I live in Ohio and have not been to this hospital since 2011. After contacting the hospital I was told that they had incorrectly placed a homeless mans services on my account, attaching it to my ss#, due to the an error that we share a common first name, last name, and same middle initial. Our middle name is not the same. I was assured that the billing had been placed on hold and error would be taken care of. Fast forward 10 months later I have now received another bill from the Hospital in question and an additional bill from a billing company that bills for the doctors themselves. The bills total $996 and both state that this is the final month before being sent to collections. I contacted the hospital again and was told it was still on hold and to ignore the bills. After demanding to speak with someone higher up I was given a contact number and name of the person dealing with this. I have called multiple times and left voicemail messages for them to contact me but I'm left unanswered. Where do I go from this point? tl;dr : I'm being billed for a homeless mans hospital charges because we share a similar name and the hospital attached him to my ss#. [link] [comments] |
Found cat trap in neighbors yard after my cat went missing... Posted: 04 Nov 2018 11:36 PM PST Hello! I really hope this is the right place for this post because this situation has given me unbearable anxiety and I have no solution. About 5 months ago, a few friends and I moved away from our University into a much quieter family neighborhood. We brought our 1-year-old cat with us, Nelson, who we had all raised together. He is an amazing cat. Upon moving into this new house, we noticed very early on that one of our next door neighbors was very eccentric (starting to think crazy is the right word). She as an older woman, probably nearing 70, and lives with her husband. The lady was very bothersome from the get-go. Constantly coming to our doorstep and nagging us about minuscule things like the placement of our trash cans, the health of our rose bush, and how close we park to other neighbor's usual parking spots. Very peculiar stuff... Though she took a liking to Nelson very early on. Every time I walked by their house, she would have some comment about Nelson. This went on for months. I saw her giving him treats, feeding him, holding him, and taking pictures of him. I didn't think much of it.. Anyways, just a couple of weeks ago, our buddy Nelson went missing. This was very unusual as he was always very routine. I always knew exactly when he would be home and when he would be outside. And one day he suddenly vanished. I mentioned this to the neighbor lady, and she seemed to feel really bad. She posted on our community page for us, she would look around at night and come to tell us she didn't find him. She once said she thinks he might have gotten trapped and killed in some construction equipment nearby (there wasn't any construction equipment nearby). Then it got really interesting... She left a printed note on our door one day. It read that she found a cat that looked a lot like Nelson the night before. She said she tried to take him to our house but no one was home (though two of us were home), so she let him go (terrible decision). She said she took pictures. I later asked for the pictures. They were just of the back of his head..? But I could still tell it was him. She said that if she saw him again she would trap him. She said she had a cat trap and had accidentally trapped him before and really upset him. Now I am thinking this lady is a nutcase. She said that if she trapped him, she'd keep him in the basement. Come to find out that she already has 3 cats that she'd never mentioned that she keeps inside. I peeked over into her backyard, and there is actually a cat trap. I think my cat is in her house. I will fully admit that I could just be being overly paranoid, which wouldn't be uncharacteristic of me. Should I try to find out? Can I tell the police? Do I have any legal leverage here? Any thoughts? I've considered just explaining my logic to the neighbor and asking if I can look for Nelson in her house, if she doesn't have him, then she should have nothing to hide right? Thanks for reading!! EDIT: We are located in Seattle. I've never heard of any laws that prevent outdoor cats, and I have had one my whole life. I will have to do more research on this. We made reservations but showed up to wrong restaurant. Now they demand money. Posted: 05 Nov 2018 07:03 AM PST Takes place in Missouri. So I am a head coach of a sports team. We had a game this weekend. One of the athlete's mom made reservations for us (around 40-50 people) at a chain fast food place located 10 minutes away from our game. After the game, we went to, let's call it McDonald's, but it was the wrong McDonald's. It was not the one we made reservations to. We ate at this McDonald's, paid, and went on our way back home. The one we did make reservations to asked 2 of their employees who usually don't work at that time to take shifts so they will be able to accommodate us. They also prepared 20-30 burgers before we even showed up. I received an email from the owner of that McDonald's the next day demanding we pay him $200 for the burgers and extra staff he had on shift. The mom who made the reservation did not ask them to pre make any burgers, but simply told them that we were coming. Do I have to pay this $200 or what should I do? [link] [comments] |
Can a business take my Instagram name with a trademark claim? Posted: 05 Nov 2018 11:36 AM PST I registered my Insta account the day it was released, and scored my first name as my username (@nox, my legal given name). I was recently contacted by somebody threatening to file a trademark claim if I don't sell him the username. Specifically he says it is his new business and he is going to trademark it. So my account was created and in constant use for 7ish years before he decided he had a right to it. The name is pretty generic, there are tons of businesses, clubs, etc around the world called Nox (I ought to know, I'm constantly being mistakenly tagged in their photos). It is also my legal name. Is this a plausible threat, should I be trying to trademark my own name to defend it? (I'm in Canada, presumably the person threatening me is in the US but I am just guessing.) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Nov 2018 05:34 AM PST Title pretty much says it all. The bow of 5 boats from a dealership in the panhandle of Florida overhang the sidewalk that runs next to the highway and the anchors hang down to about 5.5 feet off the sidewalk. I've emailed the dealership and heard nothing back about it but didn't pursue further since I can usually avoid them pretty easily. This morning on my commute I saw a fellow biker pass a pedestrian which took him under the boats. His helmet hit the anchor and he wiped out pretty bad by hitting a second boat. He didn't go to the hospital but his $1000 bike is pretty much unrideable with a bent frame and potato chip tires. Does the dealership own the sidewalk? Even if they do are they responsible for damages to the bike? I assume this would be a small claims court sort of thing [link] [comments] |

Posted: 05 Nov 2018 12:27 AM PST So I wrote a review on Yelp for the company that manages my apartment building. Is what they're doing illegal, do I have grounds for taking legal measures and is my tenant right to quiet enjoyment being violated? Location: Fort Collins, CO My biggest problem has been the fines I've received. This company will strong arm you into paying fines that are not proven violations. I almost feel harassed by them. I was fined for having an illegal tenant, which apparently is my boyfriend. I had a maintenance man come over to fix my washing machine and my boyfriend answered the door and told him to come back. I was then emailed stating that I'm violating my lease and being fined for housing an illegal tenant. The landlord said he either needs to be added to the lease for $240 or I will be charged a $75 fine and a $5 fine every day until he vacates. I replied saying that he came over for breakfast and answered the door because I was busy and that I'm not sure why this requires a fine. She did not reply and continued to charge me $5 a day for just about the whole month of October. They did not ask or come into my unit to inspect and see if he or any of his belongings were inside, which they are not. When the maintenance man came back after my initial notice, my boyfriend wasn't even here. They provided no proof whatsoever that he had been occupying my unit daily and fined me simply off of assumptions that he had been here every day for 23 days after my initial notice. The only thing they sent me was a photo of him taking out my dog one day. I emailed her again saying none of his belongings are here or have been here. I wasn't even given a chance to dispute the fines because they were added to my rent. I couldn't pay my rent without also paying the fines. I'm trying to meet with a lawyer because I feel as though this is harassment and illegal. Fining me off of accusations without any documentation or proof that he was here every day I was charged an additional $5 is honestly ridiculous. I pay $1,100 a month for a studio and I can't even have my boyfriend over without being hounded for money. It's really disappointing. I want to add that he doesn't pay rent, doesn't receive mail, doesn't make service requests and has not moved in furniture. [link] [comments] |
My girlfriend is in a terrible situation and i don't know how to help her. Posted: 04 Nov 2018 11:54 PM PST My girlfriend, currently 15, is living with her parents. Today I learned a lot more about her living conditions, and her family, and listened into her mom screaming at her. So here's the gist of the story. My girlfriend was forced into sending nude photos and performing sexual acts on a man when she was 13. Her mother (M) blames her (G) for it, saying she should have just ran away as the sexual acts occurred in an alley. M said that she's pissed off that she has to spend so much money trying to get the man prosecuted because of new evidence that's come out, and has shamed G by saying "how do you feel now that your 13 year old self is exposed to law enforcement? You'll never be pure again." M started saying that if she saw me on G's phone again, she would take the phone away and call to have the service stopped and that G wouldn't get another phone until she was 18, and as she wouldn't have a phone, she would not be allowed to leave the house for anything other than school, would not be allowed to participate in any clubs, or even walk home from school. I've also learned that she lives in a small 2 bedroom apartment, one bedroom is her mom's, one is her dad's. Her sisters (8 and 9) sleep with her mom and she sleeps in the living room, which means she's unable to sleep more than 3 hours a night because her mom stays up watching TV. She told me her arm was sore and she didn't know why, and then finally she admitted that half of her upper arm is bruised because her dad got irritated when she was trying to talk to him about her robotics competition that's coming up, so he punched her in the arm and said he wanted to hit her face but didn't want to leave a visible bruise. She's told me that often times, when her parents start hitting her little sisters, she has to start shouting to get them to hit her instead. She's told me that the phone she has is a government issued phone, so she gets limited minutes but it's free service, so it's not like her parents are paying for it. We live in Washington state. So my question here is actually multiple. 1) Can they confine her to not leaving the house until she's 18 except to go to school? 2) If I were to buy a cell phone with a plan under my own name, and "loan" it to her, would her parents be legally allowed to confiscate it? (I'm no lawyer but that situation sounds to me like I've authorized her to be in possession of my property, but I haven't authorized her parents so if they took it, it would be stealing from me?) 3) I know that the physical abuse is illegal (they're leaving bruises, it's worse than just discipline). But is the emotional stress that they're putting her under anything that would strengthen a court case? 4) is there a way to give them a legal scare to get them to treat her better, without getting her taken away from them? Me and her would both prefer she not get sent to some other City if possible, we just want a better life for her where she is. 5) if she were to run away, as she's been talking about a lot lately, what legal repercussions would she potentially face? Edit: she's just informed me that while she has a job, her parents have access to her bank account and have been pulling her money out without consulting her, to buy things for them, but not for her. They take about 2/3 of all her paychecks for themselves. She's not even allowed to keep the money that she works for. Update: I've talked to her and she's told me she wants to wait to call CPS. She wants to get more hard evidence like pictures of bruises and a recording of the threats. She wants to make sure that there's no doubt her sisters will get our of the house because she wants them to be safe. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Nov 2018 01:22 PM PST Okay, so I live in Florida. We bought a house in one of those communities where most of the homes are owned by investors and rented to tourists on Disney vacations. The tourists actually make great neighbors, they all tend to be in a good mood because they're on vacation. Nothing in the HOA rules/covenants/etc forbids living in your house, rather than renting it out. The area is zoned residential, our home is a single family, we have no kids, or parties, and are much quieter than the tourists. We are very, very careful about following all of the HOA rules and restrictions, because we understand that our neighbors are effectively businesses, and we don't want to be dicks and interfere with their customers. But no matter how nice, friendly, or rule-abiding we try to be, the HOA manager/director/crazy person will not stop giving us shit every single time we have to deal with her. The paint job on our house was getting old, so we popped over to the office to flip through the book of approved paint schemes. She lectured us on the fact that these homes were not intended to be full time residences. We applied to put up a mailbox. Many of our neighbors, full time and part time, have them. She okayed the request in the end because the HOA explicitly allows mailboxes, but it took half a dozen back and forth discussions, because again she wanted us to realize these homes are not intended to be lived in, and we should not expect 'proper residential' benefits. Her office is located by the community pool/store, and if I so much as dare my head in that area, she will come by to remind me, YET AGAIN, that what we are doing is NOT OKAY. Needless to say, I have taken to avoiding the place. Having just gotten another lecture from her today when I went to drop off a form she requested all homeowners to fill out, I started wondering. Do I have any sort of legal right to live in my own home, given that it is zoned for you know, living in, and I do not expect special treatment? I have triple checked the documents we signed, and nothing in them says we can't live here. Is there a law I can quote that will potentially make this woman just shut up and leave me alone? We are not the only permanent residents in the neighborhood, but finding out who the others are seems to require asking LectureLady, so I have not yet gotten up the nerve to find out who they are to see if she gives them the same endless aggravation. Posted: 05 Nov 2018 07:36 AM PST Last night was the first night my daughter asked me if her mom loves her and I am totally heartbroken for her. Her mom has always made a minimum effort to see her mostly around holidays but over the last two years that have stopped. My daughter has called her to try to see her two times this past month and her mom has stood her up both times. I don't have an address for her mom only a phone number. I would like to file for abandonment to relinquish all rights from her mom as I feel filing for custody might make her put up a fight to avoid paying child support. And that's not any reason to want to be in your Kids life. I'm in colorado. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
My Dad died of a drug overdose and I’m trying to get custody of my 5 siblings. Posted: 05 Nov 2018 11:44 AM PST My Dad died of a heroin overdose in April a day after his birthday. One of my sisters (15) found his body. My Mother is a lazy narcissist who lives off welfare, she's verbally and physically abusive. My youngest brother (9) is completely brainwashed by her and will do anything she says even if that's disowning his siblings. My sisters (15) & (17) have sent me videos of her offering them alcohol and weed. She is very violet towards my 14 year old brother and is constantly hitting him in the head. He has a few medical issues that she doesn't take him to the doctor for. My youngest sister (11) is verging on obesity because my Mother doesn't let them leave the house and only feeds them junk.. I'm only 19 and I understand that I'd be giving up my life to raise them but I wouldn't be able to enjoy my life if I knew they were in this situation. I'm wondering if I have a chance of getting custody or am I just wasting my time and money and putting the kids through stress for no reason. I've moved to Hawaii where she is and I'm currently living with her until I get a place but she doesn't know my plans. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Nov 2018 06:47 AM PST Texas I have ~100k in an inherited IRA that is in a promissory note with a company that buys airplane engines and leases them to airliners for significant profit. The investment ran smoothly for years until this Summer. Several family members and friends of the family are invested as well. There is up to 100 million in funds involved. We stopped getting paid in July and finally after a lot of back and forth got a "come to Jesus' type meeting in September. Evidently, the CEO of this investment company purchased the company from friends. It was a shell with no activity, no ties, no baggage, just an LLC name. At some point in the past, a previous owner listed the company in a divorce. The ex wife didn't notice or didn't act on it for years. Out of the blue she decides to claim ownership of the company. CEO is served with a court summons, asks the friends he purchased the company from whats gong on and they say not to worry about it,they will take care of it. So he does nothing. He does not respond to the court summons, does not show up to court, and thus a summary judgement against him is made. All the assets were frozen back in JANUARY of this year. This moron had been paying our interest payments out of his own pocket while frantically trying to resolve the issue. He started running out of money in July which is why our interest payment stopped. We did get a lump sum from him that caught us up through August. The company's plan now is to file for chapter 11 bankruptcy to restructure the company to get assets unfrozen. I signed a promissory note for a 3 year term with a 1% interest return monthly. This is starting to look like it will result in a serious hardship as that investment return was a part of my income when I bought my house in June. I know that if I threaten legal action, there is no chance of getting any info out of them going forward. I'm at a loss for what legal or regulatory rights I have here and how best to proceed with the likely outcome of actually getting my money back. Any thoughts on what specific violations may be in play, what kind of lawyer to go to, or any advice is much appreciated. [link] [comments] |
I got fired over false accusations with no proof, what do I do? Posted: 05 Nov 2018 08:07 AM PST I started a job at IHOP in Arkansas and was there for a month, starting early October to early November, I was fired yesterday. The manager called me saying not to come back because several people have accused me of stealing money, one says I stole $50 from her wallet, and another said I stole her tips. Needless to say, I NEVER stole anything more than a pen in my entire life. I asked them if they had any proof (they have video cameras everywhere) and they have no proof. I'm really angry that people would lie about me. I knew in the beginning that nobody liked me there (I have no clue WHY) because I was harassed and bullied by several of the servers. I feel like it was a conspiracy against me between a few of them to get me fired, since they have explicitly made it clear that they want me gone. I turn 18 Nov. 9th of this year, if that detail helps? I live in AR and I want to take some sort of legal action to prove my innocence. I don't want that job back, but I want to prove I was innocent. What do I do? [link] [comments] |
Reported a student with prior history to the school for making terrorist threats and now he's out. Posted: 04 Nov 2018 06:12 PM PST First of all, This is a throwaway, I attend school in Georgia (Fulton county), I am an international student from Canada. I am 22 years of age. I live off campus. On November 1st I was sitting in a break room talking with a friend who we will call Gabe. I work closely with Gabe at the school but have no relationship with them outside of school. At 2:25pm a person who we will call Henry enters the room visibly angry, upset and frustrated they start expressing how upset and angry they were that a piece of art they created will not be shown on November 2nd due to the fact that its a fire hazard and has been damaged in its transportation. Henry starts to say how he's glad that the person who pulled his work from the show is speaking to him through a teacher and not directly "because if they were talking to me directly I would kill them" Soon after saying that silence falls over the room and he then says "I'm going to commit homicide on the entire 3rd floor" The third floor is where the show is happening on the evening of November 2nd. I quickly get out of that situation saying that I'm getting food with my roommates and had better get going. I immediately contact my school's security and brief them on what I heard. I quickly learn that this student has multiple problems with the school's security before and has an incident where he filmed himself with a loaded gun on school campus after hours (It had nothing to do with being at school, it wasn't for a film project, he was being incredibly edgy I've heard but never seen the video but it is fact that exists.) For the instance of having a firearm used recklessly on school property the school banned him from all school housing residences, placed him on probation but allowed him to continue his enrollment. While I was giving my account of the events to the school security the police were informed and with the information given to them they went in to question Henry and Henry confirmed everything I gave in my statement about what he said. They arrested him and then I gave an official handwritten police statement to them detailing all the events that occurred in the break room. When Gabe was asked to give an account of what happened they disappeared and turned off their cellphone and didn't come back till the evening when they called school security saying they were not going to give an account of what happened. Gabe and Henry are friends and have been friends for a long time. On November 1st I was told by both school security and The police officer who booked him that he was being taken in on disturbing the peace and wouldn't be out of jail till Saturday and had been expelled from school. I was shocked that someone with a history of having a gun on campus and making terror threats could only be in jail for 2 days before being released. During the early afternoon November 2nd (1pm) I received a call from the school saying that the charge had been upgraded from disturbing the peace to terror threats and I wouldn't have to worry about Henry for a long time. I've been very worried about Henry because it is very obvious that I was the person who told the authorities what he said and got him expelled from school. They said that during the interrogation Henry didn't mention me one time so I have nothing to worry about. They made it very clear this whole time that if there were any updates about him being released they would let me know right away. The evening of November 2nd is the day of the big show where thousand plus people are in attendance and Head of security pulls me aside to thank me and introduces me to another person on the security team. The reiterate that once again Henry is going to be in jail for a very long time so I have nothing to worry about. November 3rd Henry is released from jail. I am not informed. November 4th I tell a friend back home about the incident that occurred because I need someone to talk to. I go to look up Henry's Instagram account and I can't find it. I've been blocked by him and he's posting on his Instagram story. I find out that Henry is out jail at that moment and is back home. I and Henry live on the same floor of the same apartment building across from the school. Henry doesn't mention my name in the interrogation, the police tell me not to worry, Henry gets out of jail and the first thing he thinks to do when he gets out is block me on Instagram but keeps Gabe. Therefore solidifying that he knows I told the authorities. I don't feel safe, Henry knows where I live. He's never said anything directly to me but he knows im the person who got him expelled from school. I don't feel safe at home, at school, I don't know what to do. I called the police officer to ask him if I could get a restraining order so we couldn't live in the same apartment but he said it wouldn't be possible because he didn't do anything to me directly. Please any advice, anything I could do to add distance between myself and Henry or any answers to how he got out so early. Edit for spelling and grammar Update 11/5/2018 12:23pm EST: I spoke with the school and the investigator about him being released and me not being notified. Everyone was shocked and asked how I knew he was out and I showed them the Instagram posts and they began making phone calls. As of this moment we haven't found any info BUT recommended by the school, investigator and consulate they'd advised me to file for a TPO with all the information I have and see if it will be granted. The reason I'm adamant on getting protection is because a lot of my program at school happens off school campus and he's very involved outside of school in these areas. At 8pm tonight ill be telling my roommates what happened and what is happening so they can also keep an eye out. On a good note, he had is academic hearing this morning and is officially expelled. If anyone has advice for building a case for TPO please get in touch with me. I know this is not a typical TPO case and its a big reach. [link] [comments] |
My husbands ex crashed our wedding and ruined it Posted: 04 Nov 2018 01:50 PM PST State is Texas. My now husband and I got married 3 days ago. We are gay men in our early thirties. Right before we said our vows his ex girlfriend stalked into the church and started screaming that my husband was marrying a man because she "showed him that he can't handle a strong woman". She stalked up and started screaming in my face about all sorts of personal things (to give an idea, she said in front of all our families that my husbands penis was too small to do anything). In honestly felt like out of a movie. My brother finally managed to get her to leave, but after that everything was really thrown off. We made it through the ceremony and when we got to the reception around half the guests left early, approaching us and apologizing but saying that they felt uncomfortable with the dramatics. Is there anything I can do legally? Husband is embarrassed and upset. [link] [comments] |
CA Title in hand, car was repossessed for money owed by PO. Posted: 05 Nov 2018 12:15 PM PST This morning I woke up (CA) to my car being repossessed. The car was sold in my home state of CA. I called the police to report my car missing when they said it was impounded. I had to miss work, and will have to pay a $400 impound fee. On top of that, they say money is owed by the car. I showed them my title and they didn't care. I bought the car from Carmax and now they said they won't release the car because the previous owner owes $3k on the car and won't release it until that's paid. The car was damages in the process, and the car was also damaged in the tow. I can't afford a day from work, impound fees, $3k, and body work. My friend says I need to take the Carmax to small claims court, I don't even know how they can sell me a car they don't own (that is owed on). What can I do? Edit: she went to the police showing the title in her name, and bill of sale showing it's paid in full, and told her it's a civil matter and that they won't do anything. Posted: 05 Nov 2018 11:58 AM PST https://imgur.com/gallery/70BGtQC Do you guys think this is something I should have to pay for? The contractor put that new propane tank in, obliterated my sump pumps drain line, and left a complete mess for me to clean up... before he went he told my wife, "We nicked a pipe, your husband should be able to fix that." Can I? Yeah. Should I? I don't think so... This took me a lot of time to fix, the damn pipe was marked (there's orange paint everywhere actually they marked up everything), and I had already waited an extra month for the tank to come in stock through 30-50 degree Ohio weather with a newborn and a 1 year old baby inside... because they refused to get this 2 hour job done in tandem with the HVAC company replacing the furnace and AC unit... I complained to the construction manager but the whole time I've dealt with these guys they made me feel like I should be so lucky to have their busy construction guy out to my house. Well, I say horse shit and I've had enough. The manager is coming to my house Wednesday morning to look at my repair job or schmooze me into not suing them... I'm not sure. I'm set on telling them I want to be compensated for my time. Is that fair or am I being ridiculous? Do you think this constitutes gross negligence? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Nov 2018 07:11 AM PST So at my job, my boss was paying several of my coworkers to have sex or do sexual things with him. I'm in sales. He would pay them in deals, cash, and other ways. One individual said no, and they were fired for that. I left the job because of all this and went to HR, but they are not doing anything about it. The manager also black listed me by calling all local companies and telling them not to hire me. Is this something I should get the police involved in? I want to talk to these other coworkers and see how many people are/were actually involved. Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Teenager sued for $2 million plus USD. What to do? Posted: 04 Nov 2018 06:11 PM PST Hey there everyone, hoping I could get some insight on what to do over this, maybe get a couple replies from some actual people in the profession of law. I'm asking on behalf of a friend, and this is obviously a throwaway account for the reasons of our own personal safety and such. Thanks in advance to anyone who can give us any advice. So the background is this: Earlier in April of this year, my friend got into a car wreck on his way to school. Both cars were totaled in the wreck, my friend driving a mid-00s corolla, and the other driver a newer Infiniti Sports Coupe or something of the sort. Luckily nobody was injured too seriously; the other driver had a little scrape and a couple bruises but seemed fine for the most part, and my friend ended up with a concussion and sprained ankle but was still able to attend school. After the emergency services checked them both out and cleared the scene they said my friend was at fault, which he accepted, and I assume that their family let insurance take it from there. I'm unaware of the insurance status of the other driver, but my friend said he is covered through his parents insurance for liability-only, upto $100,000, as he is only 17 and is a minor. A few weeks ago, his family was notified by the insurance company that the other driver did not settle and was suing him, for a minimum of $2 million USD to a max of $10 million USD. He says his family has some property they own and took out some loans to start their own business, and his dad also works a white-collar office job as well in the city. They think that due to the fact that he is a minor, they were able to find information about his father and their businesses on the public domain, and as a result are suing purely for profit. My question is that what do you think will happen once this is brought up in a court of law. Could the other driver even win that much or do you guys think the judge will just toss out the case? The other driver wasn't injured that severely, and his insurance already agreed to recompense him for his totaled car, so I don't see any viable basis for some grown as adult suing some teenager for upwards of $2 mill. His family isn't insanely rich or anything, just your average middle class family. It's really worrying and has been really stressing everyone out, my family included since they're very close friends. This all happened in Texas btw Tl,dr: Friend got in a wreck with another driver, was at fault. Got sued by the other driver for $2 million -$10 million USD even though he's literally a teenager. Could this hold up in a court of law? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Nov 2018 01:02 AM PST I wait tables in Oklahoma and we pay a $1 breakage fee at the end of each shift to cover broken things and I'm wondering how common/legal this practice is. I did the math and if we have 13 servers a day on average they make almost $5,000 off of us a year and that just doesn't seem at all right to me. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Nov 2018 11:31 AM PST This in northern Minnesota As the title says, my low paying water park job (I'm an arcade attendant) is trying to force the lifeguards and I to use a chemical to acid wash the pools. There is no ventilation, barely any safety equipment (2 masks, one full face coverage, one only covering the nose nothing to protect the eyes), no protective gear for feet or body. The masks don't do anything and the chemical will get inside, it's honestly awful. We did this multiple days last year and one day last week this current year as we felt we didn't have a choice, they let us use a chemical that burns your throat and eyes while wearing shorts and crocs. We have to mix this chemical and apply it ourselves with no help from upper management. This is not in any of our job descriptions and seems super unsafe which is why we assume our bosses won't do it. The waterpark I work at shuts down 2 weeks out of the year for "maintenance" all lifeguards and other employees basically are out of a job unless they come in and help which honestly is fine until they start giving us jobs they defiantly should be contracting out for. I work with mainly high schoolers and some college students who really only work one or two days a week so they don't work shut down. The same 5 people who normally work 30-40 hours a week, work everyday during shutdown as we can't afford to be without work for that long and the management knows this. The newest idea upper management had to get us to work more "efficiently" is to have a competition where they will split up the 5 of us (keep in mind we are the only workers who come in to help) into teams and have us compete to see who can acid wash the biggest pool we have the fastest. The "winners" get a paid lunch while the losers get to just watch them eat? The five of us are all friends and refuse to compete against each other for only 1 or 2 of us to get to eat, and for the upper managements pleasure. The other problem is the fact that there is only 2 masks and 5 of us, we literally had to bring this to their attention as they were actually going to have 3 people use the chemical without one. This is so jumbled and definitely not grammatically correct but I'm out for a lunch break and had to type this quick. When I get back to work I will post a picture of the chemical we are using, the masks, and the pools. Any advice is super appreciated, I need the money but I honestly don't think this is safe or legal and I don't want to put my health at risk for a horrible waterpark. Is this legal? The chemical is- UNI364 Sodium Hydrosulfite 4.2 [link] [comments] |
