We encourage all our visitors to ask those investing related questions they were always too afraid to ask.

The members of /r/investing are here to answer and educate!

NOTE If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or anything similar. There is no single answer to this question, but we will also need A LOT MORE information if we are to give some sort of answer

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive girlfriend? (not really an asset)
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Dine Brands Global's Applebee figured out how to deal with take home meals and meal kits, by attracting stress eaters with comfort food

    Posted: 04 Nov 2018 03:48 PM PST

    https://www.cnn.com/2018/11/03/business/applebees-turnaround/index.html

"Americans are stressed," Cywinski told CNN Business.

"When stressed, they tend to go to comfort food ... and we're pretty darn good at comfort food," he said. "That's the role we play."

Alcohol accounts for about 15% of Applebee's business, Cywinski said. It's important because stressed out customers may want a drink with dinner. And when people come to drink, they often order food.

When it comes to meals, Applebee's is focusing on "abundant value," Cywinski said. That means all-you-can-eat riblets and chicken tenders and creamy pasta dishes.

But Applebee's has been "significantly outperforming the industry," Vaccaro added. That may be because Applebee's has done such a good job of showing customers that it's about the value and the experience, he said.

"They're not going after the avocado toast Millennials," said Anderson. "They're going after middle America."

But Applebee's is paying attention to certain trends. Like other chains, Applebee's is investing in off-premise dining, technology and delivery.

Aren't the midterm election results fully priced in by now? Why are people predicting a stock market drop after the election?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2018 08:20 AM PST

Sites like 538 project a 80% chance the Democrats take the house, and a 80% chance the Republicans keep the Senate. Seems like this is fully baked into the markets. Why, then, do some people predict that the market will go down after election day?

Apple - the most undervalued company in the world?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 03:21 AM PST

Not only is the company the most valuable company in the world, but I would argue it's the most undervalued company. Why? Because it's the most misunderstood business out there?

Let me explain. For anyone who tuned in to the earnings call last week, or read the news related to it, are aware of the reporting bomb Apple dropped - it will stop reporting unit sales for all products. Instead it will provide revenue and cost for each individual product line. This took everyone by surprise - and Wall St doesn't like surprises.

In the aftermath the stocks plunged 7% (partly due to underwhelming rev. forecast for holidays) and a lot of bashing in media outlets. Sentiment out there is negative since the belief is that slowing growth of unit sales is main reason for dropped unit sales. This is where I believe everyone is wrong.

Apple has evolved tremendously since it launched the iPhone. Back then the company had one color and few memory options. Today, several generations of iPhones are available in various configurations. The story is the same for iPad. During the years more wearables, accessories have been introduced along with services (Apple Pay, Apple Music, iCloud etc.). My feeling is that the company now views it's eco-system as complete in some way. It has entry products, high-end (as always), up/cross-sales (EarPods, Watch, Pencil etc.) after-sales monetization (services) - basically everything needed to look at customers as a installed base that it needs to grow and monetize over time. In very simple terms - X amount of customers * Y amount of revenue/customer. I believe this is the only metrics the company is focusing on growing from now on - customer base and revenue per customer. That's why they don't care if they sell you an iPad after the iPhone or EarPods and a watch.

Coming to this conclusion, I think Apple is fundamentally misunderstood and needs to be re-valued - as a service-business. I think Apple shall not be looked at as a hardware maker (Ford or GM) but rather as a social network (Facebook). Sure, the business is different but the metrics shouldn't be. Facebook tracks monthly active users and revenue per user. I believe this is how Apple will/should do it. Looking at businesses with a common approach - they're valued way more than P/E 17. Facebook, after a recent slaughter, is roughly P/E 22. Google is P/E 40.

This official shift in how the company wants analysts and investors to view it (I am sure the company has been viewing itself this way for a while) makes me very bullish on the future of the company. I believe this will mitigate a future of "hardware saturation" since the company is anticipating that and constantly figuring out ways to squeeze out more money per customer.

Has anybody taken the series 65? Is it as hard as Robert Walkers Pass the 65 practice exams?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2018 11:38 AM PST

So, I've been studying for the series 65 for a few months, and I've been using Robert Walker's pass the 65 system. Thing is, after 6 practice exams, my scores have barely improved (mid 70's). Even though I'm much more knowledgeable now then when I started, the nature of the questions makes it extremely difficult to progress. Many of the questions have multiple right answers, with one being the "best" only if you make some odd leaps of judgement and assumptions without evidence. Or in other situations, the questions are extremely vague and can be interpreted in multiple ways. Thirdly, many of the questions are extremely tricky, using word play to try and trick you into the wrong answer.

After 6 exams, and a read through of multiple books and apps, I'm still seeing completely new information I've never even seen or heard anywhere. That also strikes me as odd, but maybe this exam really is this all encompassing.

So, I guess my question is, is the exam *actually* this difficult, or is this training course going a bit overboard with the difficulty? I'm just frustrated, any help would be appreciated.

    How about Apple?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2018 09:57 PM PST

After the disappointment that was Q3 for Apple and the drop of more than 6% in stock price, I'm wondering what people are thinking about Apple. Given their track record of rebounding pretty well and maintaining a positive trend over the years, is now not a great time to buy some shares while the price is down? Or do you personally believe that Apple is becoming a bit of a lost cause at this point?

Also, I would like to express my condolences to the redditor who bought 25k worth of shares before Q3 reports came out, thinking it'd be a positive...

Anybody have any favorite sustainable ESG mutual funds or ETFs?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2018 01:30 PM PST

I'm interested in investing in a sustainable ESG fund that basically tracks an index (so not necessarily a sector ETF/fund comprising, say, renewable energy companies, but a fund that focuses on investing in progressive companies from all industries, and one that more-or-less tracks an index so I'm not sacrificing too much return or taking on too much risk). I'm with Schwab, so I was looking at their socially conscious funds list, particularly OneSource funds with no transaction fee, and after some very preliminary research it looks like TSORX and AFDIX are potential choices for international and domestic holdings, respectively, but does anybody here practice sustainable investing and have some go-to funds they like?

Monthly reinvesting, how does it work?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2018 01:43 PM PST

So if I by a Vanguard ETF it's like buying a share isn't it?

How do I reinvest monthly gains? Or is that even necessary? I'm not clear how this works.

EDIT: so I guess only dividends would be reinvested. And regular yield really only generates profit at sale like regular stock does. Right?

    Investment opportunity in Brazil?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2018 07:38 PM PST

I have been reading about the recent Brazilian election and the new president has appointed an Economic Minister from the Chicago School. As such there is talk of privatizing some 140+ state owned agencies. I would think there might be opportunity there for potential investors. Any ideas how to get involved?

Ongoing Blizzard controversy: Time to buy EA?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2018 07:27 PM PST

I'm sure most of you have heard about the ongoing Activision Blizzard ($ATVI) controversy. With all the bad PR ATVI is facing, is this a going time to buy EA, to hedge against ATVI? $EA is also launching Battlefield V in about 2 weeks, and it seems inevitable that a pre-release pump will happen. What are your thoughts on this?

How to correctly play VIX into Midterm election and FOMC meeting?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2018 08:43 AM PST

Just a disclaimer, im doing this for a national stock market competition. I just wanted to ask about this play

The Midterm elections are looking insane in terms of volatility. If Repubs win, odds are VIX will go down and if Dems win odds are VIX will go up. I've dropped quite a bit in the rankings of our stock market competition, and since its coming to a close soon I decided to go full out in an effort to win as coming 30th and 1000th is the same, you're not first.

I believe Republicans will do better than expected yet still lose a few house seats, so I'm planning on shorting everything VIX (If they only lose a few seats but keep a majority I feel like VIX will still drop, am I correct?).

In addition to this, the FOMC meeting is concluding this Thursday. Historically VIX drops going into the meeting, and goes up if they decide to raise interest rates. I was thinking I should hold my short until Thursday morning and flip all my positions since I believe they will continue their longterm plan to raise interest rates. Have I analyzed this correctly? Am I doing something stupid?

These are my plays before the election

    Short

     TVIX UVXY VXX

    Long

     FXI SVXY

Is there anything I haven't factored in? Will what I think will happen actually happen (In terms of both the election and VIX changing based on it?) What else should I play for maximal risk?
