I did it. I finally blew the whistle on my employer (life insurance company)

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 03:43 PM PST

I did it. I finally blew the whistle.

To be honest, I was sick and tired of having to cover for my company when the contract said one thing and we did another. So I reported them in early 2018. I did not anticipate that I would still be employed and this company when 'shit hit the fan', but god-willing I was... and I still am! As a result, I now get a front row seat to the shit-show that attempting to recover from this egregious 'over-sight'.

If you're unaware of my situation, let me bring you up to speed. Last year I posted seeking advice regarding the misdoings of my company. Thanks for those to responded! My company was refunding individuals a pro-rated amount of money back upon cancellation of their policy. This is all fine and dandy, except for the fact that we were not using the correct date to calculate the refund . And because we were using the wrong date(a date in the future), the refund that policy holders received was less than it should have been.

I voiced my concerns a few times through the appropriate channels, but to no result. They didn't want to listen to me. I knew I had no other option.

    preparation

First I reached out to different insurance regulatory agencies across the US. Some states had an arduous complaint process while others were very simple to navigate. After many phone calls and internet research, I settled on Iowa and Missouri. They were friendly, go figure, and had a simple process.

I wrote a formal complaint and provided copies of some of the insurance certificates. During this time, I also started researching supreme court decisions based on refund of premium when cancelling insurance policies. My findings were that 'premiums may be retained if services were also being provided.' However, this only applies if the terms of the cancellation/refund are either absent or ambiguous within the contract. In my scenario, this was not the case. The contract explicitly stated the cancellation date the is the date we receive the signed surrender form.

    results

Two months later, I have an hour long meeting with the assistant to our consul general and the director of governance, risk & assurance. They acknowledge to me for the first time that they are being investigated by the state for concerns similar to mine(hmmmm?). They also informed me that actions were being taken to better the situation, but don't fully disclose what those actions will be.

Two months later after that.... My company changes how we cancel policies to be in alignment with the contract language.(yes! this is what I fought for) This impacts nearly 2 million policies on our books.

Four months after those changes (today).... my company announces it will retroactively refund the correct amount to policy holders who have cancelled within the past five years(213-2018)

This end result is exactly what I was seeking. For myself, I no longer need to feel that we are not being honest when describing cancellation with a policy holder. Furthermore, the company is doing the right thing by acknowledging their errors, fixing them going forward, and finally paying restitution to those who deserve it.

how much extra insurance do I need? What categories?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 04:34 AM PST

My household's net worth is now well above what I'm covered for liability on my home-owner's and my auto insurance. I'm worried that we're exposed and that I should probably pick up some riders/increased coverage. First, what riders do I need? Then, what are guidelines for amounts? Should the riders cover our net worth? 2X net worth? 0.5X?

We're a caspar milquetoast fambly--I'm an engineer, she's a nurse, two houses, two cars and a bike, kids are grown, no rental properties, no business, no nothing special

I'm sorry if this gets phlogged repeatedly by every new person who jumps on the forum. I scanned back about a month and didn't see anything.

It saddens me to see people struggling with no health insurance.

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 03:50 AM PST

I don't know if this is the best place to be posting this, but it is an insurance related story.

I went to the local library yesterday to vote, and took my daughter too so she could play in the library. (It's one of her favorite places in the world.) When we were ready to go home, she had to use the bathroom, so I waited in the lobby, browsing the flyer posting area, when a homeless-looking middle aged man (long hair and beard, tattered clothes) approached me with a canister of fancy looking caramel popcorn.

He told me he loved this popcorn, and then proceeded to show me his right hand, which was curled into a semi closed fist. There was obviously something wrong with his hand, and he asked me to help him open the canister.

I obliged, because why not? He was extremely polite, and thanked me profusely for helping. Shortly afterward my daughter came out of the restroom and I took her home. I thought nothing else about the man until this morning.

Now, I realize that he probably had no health insurance. He seemed to be suffering from some sort of chronic issue with his hand. And I am kicking myself because I feel that I should have helped him with more, perhaps asked him if he has seen a doctor or has insurance, and helped him apply for Medicaid if he needed help doing so.

I have no questions, just wanted to get this off my chest. I will be keeping an eye out for him every I go back to the library.

Trying to get off abusive parent’s health insurance

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 12:28 AM PST

    (also posted to r/healthinsurance)

My friend is on private health insurance through their abusive father's company in New York (he is the owner of the company and the policy holder). They no longer live in that state but are still enrolled in the plan, which hardly covers anything and was the reason they were denied state insurance enrollment in Minnesota, where they live now. How can they remove themselves from that insurance? And/or is there a way to sidestep the previous plan and enroll in Minnesota Care regardless?

Is it possible for new health insurance to cover a medical bill that a previous health insurance did not?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 11:57 PM PST

My wife covered both of us with health insurance up until around July this year. She had been seeing her OBGYN about once a month since May. I got a new job recently and we got a new, better, insurance. We received a bill last month that was not covered from our past insurance.

Is it possible that our new insurance can cover or reduce this expense or are we out of luck and have to pay the full-amount each month ourselves?

Kemper Renter's Insurance -- Charges Due After Cancellation

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 07:24 PM PST

    Hi there everyone,

Quick question here for the not so blissfully ignorant. I used Kemper for renter's insurance and cancelled my coverage when I moved to another state with my wife, keeping her USAA coverage active. During my time with Kemper I had payments on auto draft from my bank account. Once I cancelled this service that auto draft was also cancelled in their system.

I've received a final notice some nine months later to pay for a period of time prior to the cancellation date or my account would be sent to collections.

What are my options with Kemper/collections?

Do you typically pay at the end or beginning of a coverage period for insurance?

ASI Underwriting came to my house(unannounced) and later demanded photos of my dogs

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 09:42 AM PST

I live in Kentucky and recently switched homeowners from Safeco to progressive.

I am curious if it's lawful for an insurance underwriter to come to my home, and then request photos of my animals just for insurability.

    Advice on Teacher Pet Insurance?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 08:17 PM PST

Hello, I am a senior at a small private school in Texas. For my first three years in high school, my school had a unique policy where teachers could bring their dog to school with them. After an incident this summer where a dog harmed a teacher, our school's insurance company decided that dogs were too big of a liability and would no longer be allowed on campus.

I was devastated; having dogs on campus was essential to my school's identity and also positively influenced my high school career. Particularly, my counselor's dog (a different dog than the one from the incident) gave me an excuse to walk through the doors of her office. I could start a conversation by saying "I'm here to pet your dog," but then open up to her about my personal struggles and receive advice. This opportunity helped me get through some rough patches in the last few years and I don't want other students to be robbed of the same chance to get help.

With that in mind, is there a particular certification for this dog where the insurance company couldn't deny bringing her on campus (similar to how they couldn't deny a seeing eye dog)? Is it possible for teachers to hold the individual liability for their dogs without putting the school at any risk? Do I have any path for action here or am I wasting my time?

I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right subreddit, so if there is another community that you think could give me advice, please point me in the right direction.

    Thank you so much!

UPDATE: Root Insurance: Full coverage, car stolen, no negotiation is possible

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 11:53 PM PST

This is an update to the post in the link below:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Insurance/comments/9tmut6/root_insurance_full_coverage_car_was_stolen_they/e8zp8kt/?context=3

I have received the Appraiser's Evaluation Report on my stolen vehicle. After reviewing it, I see that they used 3 dealerships in my area as the "market value determinator", and all three dealerships "said" their sale prices were $3800, $3850, $3890. These values were dangerously close to each other, and extremely close to the NADA value from the book, also listed in the report, and whoever knows this car market knows those prices are as good as, for a lack of a better word, false, and I'm sure they don't even stock these cars anymore for the last 5 or so years. Good for me, they have the names of the contacts that they were supposedly in contact with to obtain these values from those dealerships, and also a phone number to each of them. I called every single one, asked to record the call (and consented), and asked to speak to these contacts, and surprisingly, none of them exist within the dealership, in any departments. I have since written a formal letter to my agent at Root. Will update.

What all is typically included in "including its parts and its equipment that are com- mon to the use of the vehicle as a vehicle."

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 03:34 PM PST

For instance, safety or maintenance equipment not permanently attached, but used in routine operations of a vehicle.

I'm in New Mexico, and the state driver's manual includes the phrase "You may want to carry a basic vehicle emergency kit. These kits have emergency flares, first aid supplies and basic tools"

Hiring a driver for the day – supplemental insurance?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 05:48 PM PST

Hi all– I'm taking a trip to Napa with some family and we're looking at hiring a designated driver who would drive my car for the day.

What kind of insurance verification should I ask for from the driver? Is this a situation like ride-share drivers, where they need commercial coverage? Or is it different because they'd be driving my car, not their own?

Obviously I want to make sure liability is sorted ahead of time...

    Thanks!

    Subrogation from single car accident?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 05:42 PM PST

To start, I don't own a car, so I don't have auto insurance.

I rented a car in April while on a trip in Arizona. During the trip I backed into a dumpster in a parking lot. My credit card (Chase Sapphire Reserve) covers 100% of damage to rental cars if you deny the coverage they try to sell you. I did.

My claim was paid out by Chase about 2 months ago after going through the claims process, providing all sorts of photographic and written evidence. Went off without a hitch. The rental car company (Alamo) has told me they have been made full and this is case closed. Total payment to them was some ~$2200.

Since then, over the last 2 months or so, I've gotten at least a dozen calls from one "Bell Subrogation Services" out of Florida who claim they're acting on the part of State Farm, which I assume covers Alamo. After listening to the first guy who called and telling him Alamo has been made full, and they need to stop calling I've hung up immediately or not answered the number every time they've called since. I immediately and still do have the feeling that its a scam, and they want me to accept the "debt" even though all 3 parties involved (me, Alamo, Chase) all agree nothing else needs to happen.

Just today I got a letter saying I need to settle with Bell Subrogation for ~$2750. Can I continue to disregard this, or is there some substance to their claim?

What all-risk renters insurance is available in Georgia?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 10:36 AM PST

I was researching Lemonade insurance and saw someone on Reddit mention that they're a named perils company, not all-risk, and after looking that up and seeing several other people recommending replacement value all-risk policies I'd like to go that route. Unfortunately I can't find any renters insurance policies specifically listed as all-risk except on this page, all the way down at the bottom, where it lists Allstate, Liberty Mutual, and MetLife. Are those my only options? I would also need a policy that would let me add my boyfriend to it and cover all of our stuff together, including some expensive items that we might need riders for.

    Wrong appraisal?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 04:22 PM PST

So I had a hit and run (happened overnight because I had to park on the streets due to renovations) claim with my insurance company, the damage was on the front fender/front passenger side door (fender was bent and the scratch went along the passenger side door). Everything was going well, they told me to take it to my mechanic and they would send someone to evaluate the damage(I couldn't show it myself cuz I have work 9-5). So they saw the car and estimated an amount and I got the cheque on both mine and the mechanics name. I signed it and gave it to the mechanic( mechanic knew what happened because I told him) so he ordered the fender and then he calls me saying that on the paper the insurance gave him the estimate was done on the back of the car (there was a scratch there but I didn't report it). So I call up and the lady looks at my claim and tells me (on the phone) that the claim indeed says front fender/door and she doesn't know what happened. Then the claim adjuster (different guy) calls me and tells me the evaluator thought the back dmg looked more recent and that's why they estimated that.

Now: my cars been sitting at my mechanics for almost 3 weeks (I'm driving a rental he gave me), because the mechanic had replaced the fender and says it went over the estimated cheque. He won't give me the car (he would rather install the damage fender and give it back instead ) until he gets the correct estimate (presumably more), and my insurance won't answer my calls or emails and my claim has been closed on their website...what do I do?

GF not at fault, other driver hasn't given statement?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 02:39 PM PST

    Hello,

What process follows an accident where my GF was in a collision and not at fault. A police report was filed.

It has almost been 14 days from the collision date, and my GF's car is presumably totaled after the quote. She called his insurance today and she said that they couldn't do anything because their insured had not given a statement and they have not gotten the police report yet.

Is there anything we can do to expedite the process?

Confused about what health insurance I need?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 02:32 PM PST

Soon I'll be getting married, and will no longer be on my mom's insurance. I just started my first job, but I'm not eligible for benefits yet, and won't be for about 11 months. I'm not sure what a good monthly cost is, what a good deductible is, how coinsurance works, etc

I don't go to the doctor much anyway, but I know i shouldn't be uninsured because I never know when i could get hurt. I'm sure you all would need more information about me to help but I'm not sure what exactly, so just ask about whatever you need to know

Having a huge problem with my car insurance (now ex-insurance) - going in circles [PA, US]

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 12:05 PM PST

Last week, I was in a car accident. No injuries, not at fault (other person changed lanes into the side of my car). I called to begin the claim process. After I had gotten about halfway through, they inform me that according to them, my insurance has lapsed, and I have been uninsured for 5 days. I think to myself, that's strange. My family has had this policy for 10+ years, and we've never had an issue like this. I was also able to download my current insurance policy that said I was covered until 3/15/19 at the scene of the accident.

I begin talking to a customer service agent and they said they sent me a letter detailing that my account was past due for too long and they were discontinuing my insurance. Mind you, my account is on paperless settings. I also never received this letter. Then I realized that the agent failed to update my record to show my new address & phone number, both were still listed on my mother (who was removed from the policy some time ago). So I spoke to her, and she received no email, phone calls, or letters regarding my account being past due, and when I log in, it said zero due.

Now they're saying they won't even discuss rectifying their mistakes and reinstating my insurance because they know a claim is coming, and that's fraudulent, except the fact my insurance was canceled was BS to begin with.

Is there anything at all I can do? Any magic words I need to use? I talked to my agent and he said he had literally never heard of this happening before in his decades in the industry.

    Edit, other probably irrelevant details:

I don't know if it's relevant, but the other party involved in the accident also filed a claim against me saying I blocked her, except she wasn't indicating, I was established in my lane, and she drove into my side OVER a solid white line while I was waiting to make a forced right turn in a line of traffic. The damage to my vehicle was ~$2400.

    Premium vs Contribution

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 10:09 AM PST

Trying to figure some things out here. An insurance plan's bi-weekly employee contribution is listed as $370 for Employee + spouse, whereas the Annual Premium is listed as $1,911 and the deductible is listed as $2000 for a particular plan.

How does each contribute to bi weekly pay? I know that the deductible must be paid before insurance services are put into effect, I thought the premium and deductible were the same. $370 is what will be removed from the paycheck each pay period however, correct?

Help with understanding Kaiser HMO plan?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 08:28 AM PST

Unfortunately I can't link the PDF because I'm at work, and the network hates most file sharing sites.

Employer provided Kaiser of Southern California HMO Coinsurance plan.

Family Coverage, Plan Deductible 1000, Plan Out of Pocket Max 8000.

Most services are 20% coinsurance, and has a Plan Deductible Does Not Apply tag.

I have two main questions, and probably some follow ups. Am I responsible for the 1000 or the 8000? Meaning for services that state After Plan Deductible do I need to hit the 1000 limit or the 8000 limit?

Lastly, this would cost me about 520/month. I have a hard time looking past the "I'm paying for 8k worth of services on op of 520/month" argument. This is for a family plan by the way.

What do you do with a car that's not worth repairing?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2018 08:21 AM PST

Had a baby and fell behind on bills. Ended up with no insurance and of course got into an accident which could deem either of us at fault but most likely me.

Anyway, their car had minimal damage, mine took most of it.

Repair costs estimated at 9k not including possible hidden damage.

14k left on the loan. Its a 2015.

    T-bone side passenger damage.

This is my first car and I'm new to all this. Had to learn the hard way I guess...

So what do I do with the car now? Sell it for parts? I know I still have to pay off the loan.
