Posted: 09 Nov 2018 08:03 PM PST A little background before I get into it, I went to a school in PA that is ranked one of the top 150 business schools in the US, while it isn't nearly the best school in the US I had great teachers and was actively involved in all things accounting. I was the treasurer of our Men's Club Soccer team and a member of the SAA (Student Accounting Association) at my Uni which I think overall helped take my crappy GPA and add some extra flavor to my resume, I also worked 20-30 hours a week so I could afford to even go to school. All of these things are resume builders and character builders and they can be one of many things that sets you apart from similar candidates. Now I'm going to breakdown my experience to give you guys an idea of all the ups and downs I had while trying to make this job a reality and hopefully this can help some of the people who are in the position that I was. To start things off I didn't land a job straight out of college and in fact wasn't offered this position until 6 months after school ended. Luckily, my mom owned her own PR firm so I went to work for her full-time ($15/hr.) for awhile but soon found out PR definitely wasn't for me because it involves a lot of writing, (contrary to what this post suggests) I hate writing. So I ended up working part time for her after 3 months while actively searching for jobs. I applied to easily over 100 jobs and only got an interview at about 10 places. To keep up with all the places I applied to I had to make an excel cheat sheet holding information on the place I applied to, when I applied (for follow-ups), and a number I could use to call them to follow-up. What I learned from that is the small things count! It wasn't until I made general cover letters for each position I applied to (staff accountant, tax accountant, accounts payable) that I started getting more reception and got a good amount of callbacks for interviews. In fact, I was offered a job only 6 days after making my cover letters and sending them along with my resume. Next thing I had to learn was how to correctly interview, I could go on and on about this but I'm just going to sum it up by saying look up on YouTube how to correctly interview for a job and there are really great things on there that I was doing completely wrong. Before I really got my stuff together and looked into interviewing I was turned down 9/10 times (Woohoo 10% Acceptance Rate) before landing my job so keep your damn head up because while it is super depressing to continuously be turned down there is something out there for you. If you have social anxiety like I do and all around hate interviewing there are a couple tricks that helped me. First, when making eye contact and feeling uncomfortable look in between their eyebrows, it will appear to them that you are looking at their eyes and will ease some of your tension, like Dwight said,"It's an old sales trick" and it works! Next, squeeze your thumb and pointer finger together, obviously not in eyesight of the interviewer, and it will ease your tension as well (neat trick from my step-dad). Finally, just remember that you are talking to a person, someone who was probably sitting in the same exact position that you are sitting now and all they want is to make sure that you are someone who will be easy to get along with, a pleasure to work with, and someone who will bring value to the company. Lastly, the job I finally got was at a small firm, only 5 employees including myself and the owner who is a CPA. I will say if your GPA is similar to mine your options are a lot more limited, but we are the bread and butter of small firms like mine and as long as you show initiative and drive and tell them that you are determined to work hard, learn, and add value to the company they will be impressed. Just wanted to give one last thanks to everyone on this subreddit for the advice when I posted a while back, I deleted it because some of the comments were a little personal, and wish everyone else good luck with their job hunting! Let me know if you guys need any more personal advice or have any other questions. [link] [comments]

What's the worst thing you've done in an interview? Posted: 09 Nov 2018 07:56 PM PST This is real dialog from my first industry interview as an A/R management intern... Interviewer: "Do you see yourself doing any other studying post-bachelor?" Me: "I want to be a CFA" Interviewer: "Oh... Did you mean CPA?" Me: "No." I said I wanted to be on track to a CFA... They gave me the benefit of the doubt by asking "Oh... Did you mean CPA?" and without thinking I said "No.." like wtf was I thinking? I had never looked into being a CFA or anything, just the slip of the tongue and I was too nervous to correct myself when given the chance. As soon as I said it I had no idea why I said it and then even denied that I meant CPA. For some reason I didn't get a call back lol. Probably the worst case scenario, but looking back it might've been a good thing since I didn't even know the big differences between public and industry anyways. Damn it's cringe to look back on. What's your story? [link] [comments]

CPA study routine while working full-time Posted: 09 Nov 2018 06:26 PM PST Curious about anyone who started studying for and passed the CPA exam after starting full time in public. Bit of a background on me- I'm a Staff 2 at a large B4 office and to be honest wasn't super motivated at first to take the CPA exam. All of my staff 1 year I wasn't sure if my service line or even an accounting role was what I really wanted to do. Now I have a little more clarity in the path I'd like to shoot for in my career and that involves passing the CPA exams and ideally hanging around at my B4 for a while. So back to the original question, for those applicable how did you do it after starting full time? Any discipline tips? Routines? [link] [comments]

I feel like I'm not smart enough Posted: 09 Nov 2018 12:35 PM PST Currently a Junior, taking my first individual income tax class. I failed the first test and I don't feel too confident about the last one. My gpa is barely a 3.0 yet I've somehow managed to finesse my way through the classes without retaining very much and secured an internship with a Big 4 this upcoming summer. I networked a pretty normal amount (aka applied and then talked to the recruiter at the career fair to show my face) and crushed my interview but there was nothing special about my application besides the fact I'd had a previous internship last summer. For some reason I feel like I was just brought on board to fill some kind of minority hire quota. I don't feel like I've learned anything during my time in school and I'm terrified that when it's time to take the CPA/work in the real world I'll be SOL. Hoping I don't get a C in tax because I'm guessing they ask for transcripts at the end of the semester and I don't wanna lose this internship. It seems everyone in this field is a type A, Over-achiever and I'm just of slightly above average intelligence faking my way through it. [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 Nov 2018 08:06 PM PST Do those of you that work in big 4 / other acc firms, have dreams about work at night? I find it so annoying that I spend all day at work only to come hope and sleep and have dreams about running samples or tying something out. Help. [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 Nov 2018 07:33 PM PST I interviewed Tuesday with EY for a position called tax, technology, transformation. I have the 150 credits and brought school projects to show the managers. I talked about how much I am interested in their culture and their values etc. I just hope I did not come across as awkward in the interview in some way. How long should it take to get an offer or rejection notice? Btw it's through campus recruiting. [link] [comments]

Career Advice for Intl Student Posted: 09 Nov 2018 09:26 PM PST Hey Everyone. So I'm a senior at USC double majoring in business and accounting and im also an international student. So here's my predicament now, I went through all the recruiting cycle for accounting big 4, went to networking events, meet the firms , etc etc, and still couldnt even get an interview from any of the 3 i applied to (didnt apply to kpmg and found out pwc stopped sponsoring). What are my options at this point? I dont know who to ask and I'm not sure what to do as not many companies are willing to sponsor. I'm trying for the big 4 in HK, but is there anywhere else or anything else i could apply to. I would really prefer to stay in the US, but I'm just absolutely dumbfounded. Even most of my intl friends in accounting didnt even get an interview. Any advice is appreciated thank you so much! For reference, I did an Operations and project management internship at a tech company in the east coast (mid sized), and before that I did a trading and research internship at a commodity trading company in HK. In terms of EC, I'm part of the HK Aviation Club, Trojan Investing Society, Accounting Student Honor Council, and did volunteering to in terms of JEP and Junior Achievement for a year. GPA is 3.46 currently, but I'm doing well this semester so its getting back up to 3.5 after this semester. [link] [comments] |
