    EY offer!

    Posted: 11 Nov 2018 04:36 PM PST

I was able to receive a full time offer from EY and wanted to thank the community for its advice and help it has provided to me!

I want to tell others that I had a 3.2 Cumulative GPA and a 3.0 accounting GPA and still got into B4 with my interpersonal /technical skills. Even if you have a low GPA, it is still possible!

WTF is wrong with retailer Accounting staff?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2018 03:47 PM PST

I am a state sales tax auditor. For the 4th time in as many months I have encountered a large (multistate/multinational) retailer who's staff can not tie sales to the GL. They have no appointment schedules/tables. And they don't care.

I try to make my intentions very clear at the start, I'm not trying to play gotcha. I just need to know why you report what you report, and where those amounts come from. I don't care how you get there, just show me. Prove to me you didn't just make these numbers up.

They can't do it. I tell them that I'm going to assess tax on any difference between the GL and their reported amounts. They don't care. If they can't provide an appointment schedule, then they can't contest my assessment either (well they can contest it, but without apportionment they can't prove they don't owe it anymore than I can prove they do).

They don't care. I understand that there are sometimes system limitations, but for fucks sake make an appointment schedule. It's not like the audit takes 2 days... You have months!

Do companies know they are paying hundreds of thousands of dollars in sales tax that they probably don't owe because their staff is incompetent?

    End rant.

Has anyone ever switched out from Accounting to something else?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2018 06:13 PM PST

Hi all, 27 yr old here from Toronto Canada. Currently, at 35% progress into CPA but lately have been doubting myself if I ever want to do this for a long time.

Has anyone ever switched out from accounting to something else? If so, what did you switch into and why?

Currently, I have been really interested in econometrics and investing. I'm not very good in math, only pretty average but also unsure what career paths there are for economics/investing. Also considering of perhaps switching to IT?

Any opinions from those who have switched out from accounting are much appreciated.

    FLDP... CMA, CPA, CFA?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2018 05:59 PM PST

What certification should I start thinking about as a senior in accounting graduating in the spring with 150 credit hours and a mid-august F100 FLDP start date? I will get several rotations and think I'll probably err on the side of FP&A or M&A as opposed to IA or accounting, though I'm of course not 100% sure

[US] Starting a New Job on Wednesday

    Posted: 11 Nov 2018 07:18 PM PST

Please advise on first day conversations, jokes and advice with my new team.

I accepted a promotion from industry tax to IT. It pays much more and my tax team had limiting career opportunities. I am staying with my employer, just changing departments. I interviewed for this position back in September, so I barely remember who is on my new team.

I'm a little rusty on joining a new team, so I am looking for advice on what to talk about or say.

No, I am not going to talk about hookers and black tar heroin.

Which of the 5 Governmental Funds are Funded by Taxes?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2018 06:51 PM PST

How each fund gets its funds (I'm specifically interested in taxes):

    General - Taxes

Special Revenues - Gas Taxes to finance road repairs?

Debt Service - No taxes - fund transfers - money saved from debt repayments?

Capital Projects - No taxes - fund transfers?

    Permanent - No taxes?

    CPA Exam in Florida

    Posted: 11 Nov 2018 04:08 PM PST

I have a question for those that have taken the CPA exam in Florida. Now that it's possible to sit for the exam after getting the 120 semester hour credits (and meeting the accounting and business requirements), do you think it would be likely or possible for someone to get a passing score with just that education? That is, based on your own experience, could you see someone being prepared enough to take and pass the four exam parts with the education received from a bachelors degree program (before the additional 30 credit hours are met)? I appreciate any relevant feedback!

    Preparing for PwC

    Posted: 11 Nov 2018 09:24 PM PST

    Hello fellow accountants,

I start as an entry level core tax associate in January in a small/medium size PwC office. I have not interned in public accounting, so I don't have that experience to help me. Can a few of you Big 4 people help answer some of my questions?

1- What are things you wish you had known starting out?

2- I know not to ask stupid questions (questions I can find answers to on my own, repeat questions, etc.) unless I absolutely need to. What are some good questions to ask early?

3- Are there any tips/tutorials out there on how to quickly master the software?

4- Other than brushing up on general tax and Excel, are there any areas of technical skill that would help me from the start?

5- If some of you are seniors/managers/directors/etc, what are things you look for in a new hire. I have seen that the main area is growth, such as going from bad>ok>good. How can I start off at "ok" instead of "bad"?

Thank you all so much for your help. It is so amazing to have such a helpful accounting community on here!

Transferring to Accounting, need help maximizing chances of getting a job after graduation

    Posted: 11 Nov 2018 04:06 PM PST

So, here's my situation. I was an engineering major, but after failing out of Calc II literally 3 times straight, I've come to the conclusion that I just can't hack it in engineering. So, I've decided to transfer into accounting, because I'd still like to make a decent salary at some point.

Now, here's the thing. I work full time. I'm a non-traditional student, and I'm enrolled half-time at university, and I have ~50 credit hours, so I'm looking at graduation in probably 5 years or so. Because of this job, an internship just is not feasible for me. If I quit my job, I'll have no insurance, and that would be an extremely precarious situation for me. Not to mention that if I don't get a job shortly after graduation and I quit my current one to take on an internship, I would be fucked in that regard as well. So, outside of an internship, what are my best options here?
