It's time to put on our brown pants

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:39 PM PDT

Long ago a captain and his crew were in danger of being boarded by a pirate ship. As the crew became frantic, the captain bellowed to his First Mate, "Bring me my red shirt!". The First Mate quickly retrieved the captain's red shirt, which the captain put on and lead the crew to battle the pirate boarding party. Although some casualties occurred among the crew, the pirates were repelled.

Later that day, the lookout screamed that there were two pirate vessels sending boarding parties. The crew cowered in fear, but the captain calm as ever bellowed, "Bring me my red shirt!". The battle was on, and once again the Captain and his crew repelled both boarding parties, although this time more casualties occurred.

Weary from the battles, the men sat around on deck that night recounting the day's occurrences when an ensign looked to the Captain and asked, "Sir, why did you call for your red shirt before the battle?". The Captain, giving the ensign a look that only a captain can give, exhorted, "If I am wounded in battle, the red shirt does not show the wound and thus, you men will continue to fight unafraid". The men sat in silence marveling at the courage of such a man.

As dawn came the next morning, the lookout screamed that there were pirate ships, 10 of them, all with boarding parties on their way. The men became silent and looked to their Captain for his usual command. The Captain, calm as ever, bellowed, "Bring me my brown pants!!

My portfolio is officially down 15% but I'm putting on my brown pants and holding on. Good luck to you all.

    How Do ETFs Work?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 05:18 AM PDT

I'm currently holding a few thousand ($AUD) of BetaShares Nasdaq 100 ETF (NDQ.AX) traded on the ASX. As most will know, this fund tracks the top 100 companies listed on Nasdaq, holding a mkt-cap weighted portfolio.

My question is, the Australian market (let's say, for Tuesday 30th Oct), is finished trading well before the Nasdaq even opens for this date. So if the price of the shares this ETF holds havent changed for this date, how does the value of the ETF share itself change?

My two conclusions were either speculation of that days change with a correction the following day, or simply the Tuesday changes in Aus are based off Monday changes in the US (but this would mean entirely predictable changes prompting arbitrage).

Any response would be awesome :)

Time to buy dip in Semi stocks?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 05:09 AM PDT

$INTC reported Adjusted earnings growth of 38.6% Y/Y in 3Q. For CY2019, the market expects Adjusted earnings growth ~0.69%!

    How about $LRCX and $AMAT?

$LRCX FY2020 Adjusted earnings expected to growth 19.3%. $AMAT earnings expected to growth 21.67%. NTM P/Es for both stocks are now in single digits?! C'mon...that makes no sense unless you think the market for semis is going to drop. While we wouldn't argue that the market is seeing an acceleration in growth, hard to say we are in a cyclical downturn with laptop refresh cycle, growth of clouding computing and the potential growth of quantum computing

What do you guys think? Very curious to hear your feedback. While we are quants and quantamental investors, just hard for us to properly understand why sentiment for these stocks have turned so negative!

    Moving equity around within portfolio

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 10:29 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I posted something similar yesterday but no response so one more try (:

Despite the market being red, is it generally good or bad advice to move equity around?

For example if I have stakes in both company A and company B, and both companies are deep in the red, would it make sense to sell B to purchase A if I believe more strongly in A.

Let's say B isn't necessarily a bad stock, but that I feel more confident about A's future.

For a more tangible example, let's pretend company A is MSFT and B is NKE.

    Thanks

Edit: currently in a place where I am building up my cash reserve for future down payments etc. So putting more into my portfolio is not an option to me atm

Edit#2: for sake of discussion, let's assume that the portfolio in question is already a very diverse portfolio

I am a bear convince me otherwise

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 02:02 PM PDT

It's been nice reading all your posts. I created my account not too long ago and will try to be interactive and share my thoughts/opinions.

As the title says I'm bearish. I see plenty of reasons for a bear market/recession but don't really see any compelling arguments as to why the longest bull run should continue. Can you convince me otherwise?

Why am I bearish? There are lots of reasons but the main is that we never suffered from the crisis of 08. We got into big trouble back then with too much debt and it started in housing and manifested itself all over the place. How did we solve it? Stimulus and QE (money printing). That't not a long term solution. To make matters worse we left interest rates so low for so long that it injected even more cheap money into our economy. Sure, those measures saved the economy temporarily, but now we are worse than 08. Americans are even more in debt and have less saved. With rising interest rates how are American's going to pay the interest on their debts? I don't think they will be able to. We will have to suffer greatly from the mess that started in 08 because the solution was not a sound one and only created the illusion of a strong economy.

This all leads me to believe a recession is coming or maybe even has already started. This will lead to big decline in US stocks as people will realize, just about all at once, that they are way overvalued.

    Thanks for reading.

What does it mean for a company to buy out another for a set amount per share?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 12:38 PM PDT

I was looking into the Electro Scientific Industries acquisition deal with MKS Instruments for $1 billion dollars. MKS agreed to buy ESIO for $30 a share, here is where my questions lies. What does the $30 a share buyout mean? Are they just using it as a measurement like 30 * (total shares), and will that number push the current ESIO stock price towards $30? I dont have any open positions, this was more of a general questions, thanks in advance.

The markets have been brutal lately and I am thinking it is starting to become a great time to start getting in.

I don't really want individual stocks and would love to just invest in the overall market.

The ETF I am currently looking at is VUN which is the Canadian ticker for VTI. They are pretty well diversified which I like!

Would it be foolish to scale in let's say all of 20k into this one overall ETF over the next 6 months-1 year?

I am also considering maybe investing 75% into VUN (US total equity) and 25% into a Canadian overall equity ETF.

    What do y'all think?

    Turn around Tuesday

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 04:58 AM PDT

There is an old Wall Street saying about the market selling off on Monday and bouncing on Tuesday. I think we will get one today, though it will be important to see where we close. Europe which has been leading the way lower all summer looks like it put in a ST bottom.

    Happy trading
