How do you deal with large losses?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 10:16 AM PDT

So long story short I invest my wife and I nest egg in 1 stock. Yes I as that arrogant, simple minded and stupid. We bought into amzn back in 09' and kept in for a while; we sold at $300 and bought back in @500. Long story short when it hit $1k we humbly backed out.

Recently we thought, like many, it would shoot to the moon and bought in @$1.9k. We amassed everything we had in liquidated assets and just went for it.

My wife isn't so involved in our stocks and now I don't know how to come to terms with what i've done. I can't even look at her because of how ashamed I am.

We've lost upwards of 280-300k. We have a lot planned and now I have to break the news and explain the mistakes i've made.

Any suggestions would be greatly.....GREATLY APPRECIATED.

AMZN is now only up 4.9% the last 6 months

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 10:38 AM PDT

Here, I think if we break into 1450 - 1350 territory there is going to be trouble. I expect (hope) for a small bounce back this week after today and late last week though.

    What is everyone else's thoughts?

How to think about IBM RHT acquisition.

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 11:03 PM PDT

    A. Ibm is buying rht for $190 per share in cash.

    B. The price will pop up to near 190. IBM's price may rise too if investor think this acquisition is a good fit. ( usually the target rises while the acquirer falls but in some cases, both will rise, eg. see recent Cloudera "merger" of Horton works)

    C. There are a few ways to play this:

    1. Buy RHT at less than 190. There will usually be a small spread under 190. M&A/arbitrage specialists will try to see if any of the big guys will bid for rhat and potentially bring about a hostile bid. For example from HPQ or ORCL. If yes, the price will might go over 190. I think the 63% premium from Rht last closing is there to deter other bidders.

While the arbitrage spread may only be a small, assuming there are no skeletons in closet, the deal will most likely close. The stated time frame is 2nd half of 2019. This means you don't have to buy it now unless you can get a good spread. The arbitragers will typically borrow money to magnify the returns.

Spread happens because people may not want to wait for a year for the transaction to be completed or if they feel the deal is in trouble. And the spread will widen or narrow until the deal closes.

    1. Buy other likely candidates

This purchase will likely motivate HPQ, MSFT, DELL and ORCL to acquire or form major alliances with other cloud based software companies. I have no idea who but my Guess is ORCL and HPQ being the most likely to make the move next, since Dell's debt load is already quite huge. MSFT is already leading in the cloud space so their acquisitions will likely be more niche.

    The companies are:

    • Salesforce ( pure play cloud applications company)

    • Cloudera (Big data sw provider, recently merged with Horton works, now owns 80% market share, and expanding to the cloud). Currently MSFT and ORCL has an alliance with Cloudera.

The most interesting company is Pivotal, it makes building blocks similar to RHAT's open shift, it IPOed in 2018. However the majority share holder is Dell which controls 90+% of voting rights. HPQ and ORCL May not be able to buy PVTL but may announce major alliances with PVTL. The other player is Google with the Kubernetes technology that ORCL has an alliance with.

( disclosure: I own insignificant shares of the above mentioned companies: PVTL, CRM, CLDR and MSFT)

(edited I included mostly old school tech acquirers here because they are most motivated to create their cloud and except for Microsoft, they are hardware companies.)

I'm lower enlisted in the military so this is a lot of money for me. I put my 10k into a trading account and after Amazon's Q3 earnings and subsequent dip, I thought we would see a bounce this morning. I all inned at 1670 and finally sold a few hours later at 1520 lmfao.

Welp, there goes 2 weeks worth of pay in a few hours. I'm going to cry if it bounces back up tomorrow.

I have quite a bit of my portfolio invested in CGC and recently it's been taking a pretty hard hit. Any specific reasons for it? Canada just legalized, More U.S states are sure to follow through in the coming years. So why is everyone selling? And should I stay in for the longer run or sell off and accept some losses.

    Thoughts on TLRY

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 11:45 AM PDT

Hello, just wondering everyone's opinion on Tilray. I currently hold 10 shares of it and am currently down about $550 total. What do you think I should do? Cut my loses, hold on until it goes up a bit, or double down in the position I'm at. I want to wait for it to rise a little bit and at least gain a little money back. Please help me out here guys. I'm relatively new at this and have almost no direction for this situation.

Getting confused: Limit Order, Stop Order and Limit-Stop Order?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 06:56 AM PDT

    Hello all,

Hope this is the right place to get support. I am new to stock investing and bought few stocks. Since I am not able to monitor my portfolio on a daily basis, I would like to play with the various trading options. But I am getting super confused and I am scared to f*** up.

Here's what I want to do: I bought stock A at $255. Currently trading at 330. I would like to automatically sell if it reaches $305, or goes beyond &385.

I try to use a limit-stop order to do that. Stop price was 305 and Limit price was 385. But got an error message.

Should I place two orders? Like a Stop Order at 305, and Limit Order at 385 to do what I want to do? What's a Limit-Stop Order then?

What I read online is confusing more. Thanks in advance...

Will stocks drop again soon? (Due to upcoming elections)

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 07:36 AM PDT

    Hey All!

So someone told me that historically stocks tend to really take a dive near elections. Up until today I completely believed them. However now, i see a strong uptick in the market. Does anyone see any reasons why we could have a repeat of what happened last week and a few weeks prior to that? Or....have I lost my chance at picking up some juicy gains :/

Those of you who have some $BOTZ, what are your plays?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 08:33 AM PDT

I bought a whole bunch of BOTZ for around $23, and it has just totally shat the bed the last few months after steadily rising for a long time. I haven't been positive in it for a good while, and after the last couple of weeks it's even worse.

I've read that this is an industry in its early stages, and more of a long hold. I'm wondering what other people around here are thinking. Is there a reason it's just gone downhill? Are you guys buying more or getting out?

Would like opinions and thoughts on Gold.

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 02:04 PM PDT

Hey everyone, I'm wondering if there is people here planning to move their equities into a "safe haven" asset sometime soon. I know I'm going to sound like a broken record but just based on previous AND current data we are due for a massive correction sometime soon. The fundamentals of the market really make it seem like these highs have gone far past a point of artificially inflated returns. So I am planning to perhaps sell every holding I have (only 3 stocks currently worth 7500 CAD), and moving into a gold ETF or some product similar.

I'm looking for good thoughts and In depth discussion, I appreciate in advance any time you take to leave a well thought out reply.

I've recently gotten into the stock market. I've been reading a lot of articles and opinions, so I thought I'd post here. What are y'all opinions on stocks like NVDA and MU? Both look tempting for strong upsides especially MU. I only vaguely understand that they're cyclic, so I don't know where these stocks are on the cycle. AMD looks like more sluggish for a strong upside. Thanks in advance.

Difference between IVE and IUSV (value ETFs)

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 09:46 AM PDT

Can anybody help me decipher the difference between IVE and IUSV? They are both iShares s&P value etfs and have some small differences (price, trade volume, and expense ratio being the main ones I can find) but for the most part they seem super similar. IUSV is technically called ISHARES CORE S&P U.S. VALUE ETF, while IVE is technically called ISHARES S&P 500 VALUE ETF. What does "core" refer to? As far as I can tell its just a Blackrock marketing phrase, but i'm thinking that it could also imply something to do with the relative weightings of the index?

I'm looking for a value etf to just buy and forget about, so seems like I should probably just go with IUSV and the lower expense ration, yeah? It has super low liquidity but I guess that shouldnt really be a problem since I don't plan to trade it.
