Returning/selling an item after Insurance Claim Insurance

Returning/selling an item after Insurance Claim Insurance

Returning/selling an item after Insurance Claim

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 09:45 PM PDT

    Hi,

I have a bit of a conundrum on my hands. Earlier this year, my family suffered a house fire. We are in process of replacing our electronics and filing claims on them. We submitted a list of electronics that need to be replaced, and as I understand it this list was approved by the insurance company. Now all we have to do is buy the items, and submit the receipts.

One of the items in the list was my desktop computer, which all told is worth $1300. I don't really need a new computer, I barely used the last one I had. Heck, I was considering selling it before the fire happened. What I could use at the moment is the cash that the computer is worth so I can put a down payment on a car to commute to my new job.

Now to be clear, I don't want to commit insurance fraud. I want to know legally if it would be ok to buy a replacement desktop, and sell it to a 3rd party/return it to the original store after the claim goes through.

From my perspective, It's my property so shouldn't I be able to do whatever I want with it? But at the same time, it feels dubious.

    Thanks!

    Overpaying in car insurance, refund?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 03:54 AM PDT

My husband was with Progressive when we met, so we just combined our policies & have been with them since 2011. Both in our late 30's with perfect driving records other than a parking ticket several years ago. Married. Own our home. I'm employed as a manager, he stays home with the kids.

We go through a local agent. When our renewal came up I wondered why we were paying so much and started asking our friends what they pay. I get that location, age, car, driving record, etc can all factor into your payment. Called Geico and they quoted me over $100 less a month for the same coverage plus better personal coverage (so if there was an accident they couldn't come after the house). Called my agent who looked around, called me back and said the best they could do was rewrite our Progressive policy and save us about $100 a month.

I know it's my fault for not shopping around every 6 months, but I just assumed that was what the agent was for. I definitely know to shop around in the future and will be doing that. Is it possible to get a refund for all the months we were overcharged? Was it my agents responsibility to look for cheaper policies?

Leaving job on the 21st, starting new job on the 26 -- For health insurance do I need to cover the 4 or 5 day gap some how?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 02:28 PM PDT

I'm leaving one job with the last day on the 21st and starting a new job on the 26th of the same month. Have health insurance via current job, and will have health insurance via the new job.

Should I do something to cover the couple days between jobs (i.e. COBRA for the 4 or 5 days?)

Any reason my therapist office submitted bills for a provider I’m not seeing?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 04:23 PM PDT

I'm waiting to hear back from my health insurance about this but I also wanted to see what the Reddit community said. I checked my claims and found that my therapy had billed for two claims, with two different therapy providers, on the same day several times in April and May. The code they used in each claim is 60 minutes psychotherapy. I only get services from one of the providers listed for 60 minutes of psychotherapy weekly. I have a $10 copayment for that visit. The other provider listed I have never seen, and there is a $32 copayment listed which I have never paid or received a bill for. The claims are on the same day for the same service and the insurer has marked them both as paid. Is there any possible reason this is like this?

    Edited for clarity.

    Clueless about insurance help !

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 02:14 PM PDT

If our healthcare plan is an HMO (Kaiser Bronze) and has a $14,000 overall deductible for my husband and I (family plan), idoes this mean that I'll pay full costs (and not just a $50 copay or whatever) every time I go see a primary doctor for things like a cold or being sick? Our out of pocket limit is $14000 for family - we're pretty healthy but my husband plays and coaches soccer as his career, and we're avid skiiers so I'm a little panicky about insurance being a saving grace for us god forbid we were to get hurt. The other option is a $1000 family deductible (Kaiser Silver), $9000 out of pocket but we're going to pay an extra $200 a month for this.. Just not sure if it's worth it. Sorry for the rookie question, I just really don't understand insurance at all and we're a young couple - I'm 25 and he's from the UK where they don't have to manage healthcare plans so this is the first time either of us are understanding this!

    Homeowners Insurance Advice/Concern

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 03:39 PM PDT

    Hi folks.

I have a few questions in regards to risks and concerns with a potential Liberty Mutual homeowners claim.

In 2013 we filed a claim due to a thunderstorm. Lightning killing electronics, blowing a chimney cap off the roof, etc. It was around 6000 dollars total.

Fast forward to now, 2018, and a recent thunderstorm has caused significant hail damage to my roof along with blowing several shingles off. Outside of the insurance company, I've contacted multiple roofers and they're all of the same opinion, a full roof replacement would be more in line with my needs than just a small repair. Most companies are quoting about 10k due to having a steep roof and requiring modified roofing material on some flat sections.

What is the risk of my premiums skyrocketing, or even worse, being dropped at renewal?

    Thanks.

    Condo insurance so expensive?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 03:28 PM PDT

    Hello,

I added condo insurance to my condo in San Francisco and the quotes all look so expensive ... They all range from 800ish to 1300ish dollars.

I know of a friend in the bay that recently bought a house and his insurance is 400ish dollars with apparently better coverage than I have for the whole house!

The coverage is close to $300000 dollars in Dwelling, because in case of fire I want to be protected. Is this a normal price range for such a coverage? Is it SF particularly expensive or is just how things are?

    Thanks

    Help with Insurance Career

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 03:19 PM PDT

I'm in Michigan. Going to graduate soon from a bacc program. I want to start career in insurance. Is there a guide other than DIFS(in MI) that explains the process in detail? To make a career doing this should I get my producer license? Does an adjuster need a license? Do you know where I can learn a little bit more about the field and what different paths I can take, in MI?

I see postings of jobs online for claims adjuster positions. Does the adjuster have a similar/same license as a producer?

    I really appreciate any input!

Changing Legal Documents and Car insurance

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 02:00 PM PDT

I live in texas, and i have geico, and i'm planning on changing my name and gender on my identification, and most things say its up to me to change all the documents and everything. I had a couple friends that just carried around their change document with them in case they ever needed it, but is it fraud if i don't inform my car insurance, or don't inform them in a "timely" manner, which i don't know what that means. Any advise on what I should do here? I dont want to change it, because i am 18, and my parents would like for me to pay for it if i go legal but i cant afford it at the moment (im paying for college by myself).

Person ran a red light and not owning up

Our car was totalled yesterday by a driver that ran a red light. No witnesses. All he said was that he couldnt be certain the light was green. Thats what was stated in the police report.

He told our adjuster the light was green. Basically he is not taking responsibility.

    What can we do?

    Lost Homeowner's Discount

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 12:15 PM PDT

When I signed up for insurance, I signed up through a third party company, that helped me find the cheapest rate possible. I had to go down on my coverage, because 100/300/100 was around $2,400 for six months. I got it down to $1,750 by lowering my coverage to 25/50/25. After having my insurance for a month, they requested proof of homeownership for the homeowner's discount. When I signed up I was told, by the third party company, that I was eligible for the discount if I put my girlfriend on my policy, since the house in her name (we pay the mortgage together though). Come to find out, that is not the case, a month later, and she has to either be my spouse or my name has to be on the deed. I already paid $1,750 in full, and I honestly cannot afford an additional $103 right now. I called both my insurance company and the third party comoany, and I got the same answer from both of them, she has to be my spouse to be eligible for the homeowner's discount. I was given misinformation when signing up, and now I'm the one on the line for the additional $103. Is there anything I can do short of marrying my girlfriend to be able to get this discount?

Getting Dental/Health/Medicaid insurance to cover rare genetic birth defect (Ameliogenesis Imperfecta)

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 11:21 AM PDT

Hi, Louisiana resident here. I have a little one with a rare genetic disease (mitochondrial complex III deficiency) and have spent the last several years researching her condition.

In the process, I correctly identified another rare genetic defect affecting my family: Amelogenesis Imperfecta. After doing diligent research, I was able to have my oldest child tested for this and we got a positive result.

And because I have all the luck, it turns out that this particular subtype of AI is the most rare - inherited mutation of X-linked AMELX gene. It affects my grandfather, mother, brother, son, daughter, and myself but, due to the inheritance pattern, males born to female carriers show more prominent signs & symptoms.

For the ladies affected, we have pretty yellow teeth (gross) with striated marks and are prone to cavities; my son & brother have NO enamel, so their adult teeth literally crumble apart, are urine-colored, and have all the cavities.

I am seeking advice on these issues:

    1. (Medicaid) With a positive diagnosis, a generalized pediatric dentist has crowned my son's erupting molars and veneered his front teeth; however, the veneers are equally as discolored as his previous, unenameled teeth. He is 11 and has been taunted/teased/ostracized by his peers since his adult teeth began to grow in.

With a family history of schizoaffective disorder and chronic depression and having him treated by a mental health professional for a few years, I am legitimately concerned about the impact the state of his teeth will have on his mental health. Hell, the appearance of my teeth impacts my mental health and mine are not nearly as affected.

So my 1st question: how would I get my son's desired dental treatment covered under Medicaid guidelines?

    1. (Privately covered) My brother, at my urging, finally saw a genetecist for his own official diagnosis. His doctor seemed very helpful and classified his condition as a birth defect, referred him to a dentist who specializes in AI, and is writing a letter to argue his case with the insurance company.

The only issue I'm concerned about now is the 8 month deadline. He is currently covered under parents but will age out by June. We are both concerned about the insurance company attempting to stall him until he ages out.

He also suffers from depression and anxiety due to a lifetime of being relentlessly bullied about his teeth. He has never had a girlfriend due to the lifetime of teasing and anxiety caused be it.

What can we do to argue his case best?

Insurance company wants to charge me TWO deductibles.

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 11:07 AM PDT

So here's a short version of what happened, bike was stolen and then recovered, insurance company wouldn't give me a place to drop off the motorcycle before they had their adjuster come out and a few other things. So my bike was strapped down to my truck which was locked. They got their way into my truck and hotwired it, in the process ruining the whole steering column so they dropped it off 1 mile away and took the bike again. Now my insurance company wants to charge me two deductibles for all this. Are they allowed to to this?

    20 year life term quote

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 01:29 PM PDT

41 years old male, married, 1 child i'm tall and skinny, no meds no prior medical history, no record of family having issues before 60 no accidents, convictions, wife and I make about $200k+ combined tobacco use once last year no arrests, bankruptcies, public records, credit score always been stellar (own house, 30yr mortage is 3.5%) live in Chicago

$200k coverage seems to be around high 70s to $80/month, which I guess for my age is pretty good but I'm not sure.

I know everything is different, but I want to know if this is the ballpark. I could go through another broker to perform due diligence but honestly I'm tired of the solicitations I've opened myself up to.

Any questions I should before I go through underwriting process? Are these quotes about right for my general stats? I am completely new to life insurance - I just now that term is the way to go (we've got our investments in vangaurd index funds, no need for univsersal, whole, etc)

    Thanks!

If we choose a HSA this year instead- I know my husband can't have an FSA, but can I through my employer?

Car is total loss. How to be sure I'm getting a fair value

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 12:20 PM PDT

Long story short, my car insurance company (Geico) has determined that the damage from a recent accident would cost more than the value of the car. (A 2011 Toyota Prius, if that's relevant)

How do I make sure I am getting cashed out at a fair rate? Do I just take their word for it? BTW, there is no leinholder since it's paid for. :)

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. :)

If you were an insurance broker how would you structure your own rental property policy?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 08:19 AM PDT

Context: I have a few rental properties under the same broker.. For years no claims then then we had a major fire incident due to arson. Someone lit the front porch on fire and it extended to the main house and the total 2nd floor.

When it came down to coverage and my policy, there were a few surprises:

Great I found out my total coverage was $220k

It was actual cost value, not replacement cost.

The appraiser came back with a $155k valuation for the property and land, which means.. minus 65k for land, plus 25k for demolition, and plus $5k for loss of rent.. we only get paid $120k. (We are at a loss, and obviously cannot build a similar building of sq. ft, like, kind, and quality.)

Why would my total coverage be $220k and even after a major loss, we barely get 50% of the coverage? Seems ridiculous I'm paying a premium for a total coverage that I cannot even get close to as protection.

That being said.. if you were an insurance broker how would you structure your own rental property policy to get the best coverage. I want to go to my insurance broker and pull all my policies with them and go somewhere else.

Speeding Ticket - No Points. How will this affect my auto insurance rate? (Michigan)

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 06:32 AM PDT

I got my first ever speeding ticket on my way to work this morning for going 12 over the speed limit. Stupid, I know. The fine is $150 and no points on my driving record. Will this cause my insurance to go up if I pay the ticket? Should I fight it? I just got my own insurance after being on my parents' policy for years so I'm not sure how this works.

Got a sleep study done, turned out to cost $1,600 out of pocket with insurance

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 05:49 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

So, as a young adult, my experience with insurance claims is very limited. I expected the insurance company to pay much more for the sleep study than to just leave me with a $1,600 bill, but I suppose that may have been short sighted of me. I was hoping someone may explain to me my options that I could pursue or tell me what I did wrong to fall into this situation.

    Thanks for any help
