Problem client threatening violence Posted: 29 Oct 2018 01:34 AM PDT Hi all I am trying to deal with a client that seems incredibly unreasonable. A minor (and a mean minor) error was made by someone I contracted. I pointed it out to the client, and he fumed instantly. Fair enough. I offered a solution and he still remained angry. I had explained what had happened. Oh and I never told him I had contracted someone, i took full responsibility, he found out in other ways. A few days later after the error was fixed, I delivered the item to him. He began to knit pick, telling me how he was "fucking pissed" with this person, that person and me. And he began to say that if he had seen the person I had contracted (one who made the error) he would knock them out. I have pushed out some shit work (that clients still thought was great) in the past but this was definitely not one of those situations. Sure a few things that could be knit picked but nothing major. I'm at a point to tell this client he has crossed the line and will no longer deal with him. What would you do? [link] [comments] |
Which credit card are you all using for your business expenses? Posted: 28 Oct 2018 09:31 PM PDT I just saw the Chase Business Cash card with $500 sign up bonus and 5% on business expenses. I am curious if UPS is considered as a 5% category, if so that's another 5% off my shipping which is huge for me. What card are you using and for what perk? Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Oct 2018 10:30 AM PDT I'm a woodworker that opened for business in early September, but since my shop isn't ready for the winter (still need to make a ton of upgrades), I have to close it down until the spring, and I'm not quite sure how I should handle this publicly, especially considering I just started this up a couple of months ago and am already closing temporarily. Seems like bad timing on my part.. Keep in mind, I mostly just see it as a hobby business, as I only use it for side income that I don't rely on or anything -- I still have a full-time job that pays all the bills. With that said, I'm not at all hesitant to close my business for the winter, since it will be too cold to do any work out in my shop. At the same time, I feel like I need to announce this strategically, because I don't want it to appear to my customer base that I'm already giving up a couple months in. Should I just say on my website something like "We'll be closing temporarily for the winter on [DATE]. Thanks for a great couple of months so far, and 2019 will be even better!" Looking for any guidance! Thank you! P.S. I am planning to make upgrades to my shop in the spring so that it will be winter-ready by the time winter rolls around next year. But I can't make it work financially this year. [link] [comments] |
Business / Product Liability Insurance Posted: 28 Oct 2018 07:59 PM PDT hi all, i've been researching for business insurance for an ecommerce supplement store i wish to launch and had a question in regard to the business address. Because my business will be run out of my home address to begin with since i'm a startup, i've setup my LLC so the business location is my UPS mailbox (not PO Box but address) so as to provide some privacy and not make my home address public. That being said, i've noticed that when looking to obtain business insurance, providers want to know the business address rightfully so. So my question is, has anyone had a similar issue when obtaining insurance for their ecommerce store and provided their UPS/USPS mailbox address as the business address? Thank you in advance. Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:15 AM PDT Good day fellow redditors! An LLC was formed in March of 2017. I was not issued an EIN as I was awaiting my VISA status to be updated (I'm Canadian). I expected my VISA change to be no issue, but it has been dragged out for many months. My LLC operated a small restaurant/bar and I recently ceased operations. I held out all of the taxes for my employees (Wait Staff) as directed by the state and IRS, however, I have no way to pay the IRS since I still do not have an EIN? My question is.......I have an American business partner who has agreed to join the LLC (Which would get the LLC an EIN instantly) for the purposes of getting my taxes filed. Is this illegal in any way? Are there better options? I simply want to pay the IRS the money they are owed! [link] [comments] |
leap from small manufacturing to large scale? Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:06 AM PDT What are your thoughts of businesses that automate manufacturing and lower standards to get their demand up to match their increase supply?(more branding based) What are your thoughts about brands that keep their quality after automation high even after they get big? Posted: 28 Oct 2018 11:35 PM PDT Hey reddit, I am going to purchase a small business and I need some advice. The current owner wants to sell, and even seems motivated to do so. He is, however, very lazy. The business is a local board and card game store. It has been open for more than a decade but the owner wants to stop owning and go back to playing games. I asked him to get with his accountant and get a valuation done but he has needed an inventory done for almost five years. His store is a total mess. There was a whole walkway of his stockroom you couldn't walk through because he just piled stuff back there. To help keep him on track he hired me to help him get this stuff done so the valuation can be finished. He wants to be able to hand over the store on January 1st but there is no way he will get his inventory done for me to be able to secure a loan and a contract in that time unless he's really motivated. The problem is, he isn't. The store manager, someone I know well as I'm a long time customer, is basically the only thing keeping the place open because he works so hard. He asks the current owner for more shelves in the stockroom to get product off the floor and the owner bought all the shelving… five years ago. He never put them up, I put them up a week ago after he hired me. These are the problems that he has amongst many. I have stood in line at the single POS there with items in hand to buy for more than ten minutes while he's just talking with his friends. I have spoken with our community and they all have similar complaints and are very excited with the possibility of me taking over. Even people who have left the community because of this owners actions want to come back. Even when we agreed on the valuation he wanted me to call his accountants to have them do it even though he has to authorize all of it. Despite all of this, the place is very very profitable because of the huge community and this store being the only place in our area that offers the products. My questions are: Since he is so lazy, now that I am an employee I can very likely convince him to give me authorization to his accountants and information (all of it is available on the POS they just compile it nicely). Then I can get the financial documents I need to speak with the borrower. Is this a good idea? I know if he doesn't start meeting the deadlines we set for this sale he would be likely to concede. He's all about letting people do work and make decisions for him. The next question is: Should I just have him estimate the value of his inventory? The problem is that he has thousands and thousands of unsorted used cards he's bought over the years to sell on ebay (again, he was too lazy to ever make one ebay sale…). They are literally piled up high on his desk. The vast majority of these cards are worth a few cents, some a few dollars, and then a fraction can be worth upwards of $80 a card. Im leary because he could greatly overestimate the value of his inventory. That being said, however, we continue to find things in buried in the back stock that is worth money that he had no idea was there… So perhaps I could get a fair estimate? I really want to go forward with all of this because I am so passionate about the games, my friends and community who play there, and the hobby as a whole. I want to see it thrive and I want to make sure everyone has a great time when they come in. Thanks for any advice you can give! TL;DR: I'm buying a business, he can't get his shit straight to finish an inventory. Is it a good idea to have him estimate his inventory value? Should I ask him to give me access to the accountants to get the financial information I need? [link] [comments] |

What's your best advice for a first time manager? Posted: 28 Oct 2018 11:04 PM PDT Long time reader - first time poster! I have just got given an incredible promotion with the company I work for which is putting me in charge of a team of six for the first time in my career. Although I am a bit nervous about the prospect, I am also super psyched to have a go and really want to put my best foot forward from the beginning. I am significantly younger (mid twenties) than some of the staff that will be working underneath me, I am a little nervous about not being respected because of this. Any suggestions on how to combat this? So, I know there isn't a straight answer to the question but - what advice would you give to be a great leader? [link] [comments] |
Owning multiple small businesses, what's best way to set up? Posted: 28 Oct 2018 03:30 PM PDT In the next few years I plan to open a lawn service company, I have all the training and certifications needed for this type of business, but would also like to capitalize on my carpentry experience(day job), building pergolas, decks etc. I'd prefer to market the services separately, possibly under different names. What are my options as far as insurance and registering my business? Can one LLC cover multiple ventures? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2018 04:46 AM PDT Hola! I have an industrial chemicals business and realised there is no marketplace in my industry for price discovery. Say an Amazon for business. Mr. BEZOS please don't read further. Nothing to see here. But my industry works on typically 30 day credit. Even if I get an order and find a buyer, I can not guarantee that the buyer will pay in the time defined in the contract. How do you think can we enforce some discipline? We could create an iron clad contract. But legal threats have their limits. We thought we would publish buyers ratings. If a buyer's pay late, all suppliers would know. Can we structure our market place to minimise this risk? [link] [comments] |
Ready to cold e-mail and call clients. But how do I know who makes the decisions there? Posted: 29 Oct 2018 04:36 AM PDT I run a boutique legal translation firm. I want to reach more clients as an agency and not as a freelancer (which I have been up until now), but don't know how to find the decision makers at law firms. Often, it's not a partner because they're not concerned with the minutiae of hiring a translation company. I'm rarin' to e-mail and cold call people but don't know who to reach. Any ideas? Make Your TIME Matter: Hire the Business Advisor who is also the Accountant! Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:47 AM PDT The opportunity to create and set up a New Company has never been more attractive with a generation of multi-skilled, creative, disciplined Entrepreneurs. LondonLovesBusiness .com, goes on to explain: Almost half of UK millennials want to start a business, a Legg Mason study has found. According to Legg Mason's 2017 Global Investment Survey, its fifth annual survey of investor attitudes and sentiment which assessed the views of 15,300 individuals around the world, UK millennials are increasingly setting the goal of starting their own business venture. However, what sets apart those Entrepreneurs who are likely to consistently grow their business and those that never make it past the first quarter of the financial year. The blind spot, an Entrepreneur cannot have every business skill to grow the business and maintain its function. A key ally is often the experienced Business Advisor who can not only provide business advice to grow your business but also provide stability in your monthly finance function. The Benefits of a Business Advisor and the Accountant: Business Experience Business Advisors come with many years of Business experience, and those with established Accounting backgrounds, have an incredible amount of business knowledge which will be beneficial to your Company. Whether, this is identifying growth areas, stream-lining processes, productivity or efficiency growth, or valuable network connections. It is advisable to ask for a Business and Financial Review on an annual basis for an assessment to cut down your own 'Lessons Learned' and drive the business forward with those with experience. Setting up a Strong Accounting Function Keeping a strong Accounting function not only allows adequate retention of records, and transparency allowing for easy Compliance. The records can also be used for assessment of Company performance and growth, and the ability to create a Financial Plan for continuous success. Taxation Tax compliance and Tax saving is often beneficial task but also time consuming. In this case the Business Advisor (and Accountant) will be able to advise which compliance points to meet and also assist with tax planning, tax compliance and general specific tax saving advice covering personal, business and international taxes. How does unemployment work for employers? Posted: 28 Oct 2018 08:36 AM PDT I'm a sole prop consultant who is looking to hire my first and second employees, and am trying to figure out total cost. I've been paying myself through a payroll company for a while now so think I have a handle on most of the costs, but I'm trying to figure out what my obligations are in the unfortunate event that I need to let one of my employees go in the event that the contract they're on isn't renewed. In this case they would be let go through no fault of their own, and I would expect them to collect unemployment. As part of payroll I'm paying the state and federal unemployment taxes, but it's really cheap. Researching online it seems like I'm on the hook for 6% FUTA on the first $7k of income, for a maximum of about $420/yr. I've been paying this through payroll for myself, but am looking to find out what other costs I should expect after terminating an employee. Thanks in advance. Edit: I'm in VA. Employees could potentially live in VA, MD, or DC [link] [comments] |

Am I able to sell this business? How do I even start that process? Posted: 28 Oct 2018 09:11 PM PDT First of all, this sub has been incredible and inspirational. It's a fantastic community - thank you everyone. My business partner and I started a company about 1.5 years ago. We basically are a digital arm for an ad agency, distributing their video ads. We have one client, and do not own any tech; we license an ad server. I handle "back of the house " stuff like ad delivery, reporting, optimzation, etc, and basically am the "digital ad-tech consultant". His role started as a Seller, but has not closed anything since (Different problem, but we both have full time jobs and he is expecting baby #2 so I try and and be understanding); he does all client-facing aspects - liaise between client and myself, sends invoices, and sends them reports I generate. This year we are going to gross about $800k USD, and about 75% of that is our profit. No debt, and the only expenses are the media I buy, which is the 25% from the 800k. We pay for a g-suite account, quickbooks, and our domain hosting - so beyond media spend, expenses are minimal. We have an accountant we contract for taxes (hoping not to get completely fucked thus year - glad I have not spent anything). It's a very nice cash cow, and we are super fortunate, so I am not interested in selling now, but is this something we *could* sell? I figure it would be more of an acquihire versus anything else? Who would buy a company like mine? How much could we potentially get? How would I even start looking for a buyer? Thanks all :) [link] [comments] |

Making a Wholesale Jewelry Store? Posted: 28 Oct 2018 05:33 PM PDT I own my own small business, but I want to do something on the side in order to make more money. While I can craft, I have very little time to. So what I am thinking is to buy niche jewelry at a discount from sites like AliExpress and resell them (with chances to upgrade to a different style of necklace, etc,) on sites like Etsy. Should I do this or would it be like selling out? Having an extra way to make even a small amount of money fairly easily would be awesome. What do you all think? Would it be worth it? Started a party company and have a question about waivers? Posted: 28 Oct 2018 04:34 PM PDT Ok so I just started a company that does nerf wars for birthdays, team building, offices, and youth groups. I am wanting to know if I should have some form of waiver that the person who is booking the party should sign? If I should where can I find just a blank form that I could use each time? Posted: 28 Oct 2018 04:32 PM PDT I am talking what yellow page ads use to cost. It's been a while but I seem to remember in a city like Houston Texas you could spend upwards of 10k for the year for a half page ad. You could also expect a good return. I feel like pay per click is most likely a lot more expensive but I can't find any data. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Oct 2018 03:51 PM PDT Girlfriend and I are buying her parents business. Small s Corp, they suggested: we put the business in her name and all assets in shared account when married, this would limit liability if the business is sued. They could only take assets in her name not combined assets. Any truth in this? Would a llc allow us to both own the company and still limit liability? I would prefer to keep business as shared property while still limiting liability. Maryland Throwaway account [link] [comments] |
Does adding "Sign in with LinkedIn" or "Sign in with Facebook" increase registrations? Looking up Small Business Services Posted: 28 Oct 2018 02:25 PM PDT When you are looking for a comprehensive place to find business services, what website do you go to? A lot of the websites I'm finding are predominantly for start-up discovery (BetaList, ProductHunt, etc.) but I haven't been able to find a website for established business services that small businesses can use. Anyone have any guidance? Thanks! -DW [link] [comments] |
