    IRS Mass Hiring

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 10:54 AM PDT

For those just starting out or those looking for a change... the IRS just posted 470 Revenue Agent (auditor) positions nationwide. Anticipated start date in April 2019 with more likely throughout the year. Bachelor's degree required with either one year experience or GPA above 3.0 (this has some flexibility and other options if you are close) These are entry level through early mid-career positions and salary depends on location as well as which grade you come in at.

I know this doesn't fall in line with the traditional r/Accounting trajectory in the Big4 but it can be a fantastic career path and I encourage any new grads to check out the posting.

I will gladly answer any questions regarding what this position entails day-to-day, along with anything regarding the application process or salary progressions. Feel free to PM me or ask right in this thread.

    Job Posting

    EDIT TO ADD:

The last time the IRS hired like this was 2009-2010. This is incredibly rare and likely the only chance to apply to these positions for many years, so do not put it off if you are interested.

Also in terms of general position benefits summary:

13-15 days vacation annually years 1-3. 20 days years 4-15. 25 days thereafter.

13 days of sick leave annually.

    13 federal holidays.

Health, dental, vision insurance all offered with significant employer paid portion. Life insurance also offered.

Pension (Annuity) of 1% salary per year after 10 years that is vested I believe. So work 30 years, get 30% of your ending salary as a pension. There is an employee contribution but not aware of the amount.

    5% 401k match.

Work from home up to 80% (or more in specific situations).

    40 hour work weeks.

Public transportation reimbursement for up to $260/month. Non taxable.

Alternative work scheduling offered. So you can work 4/10 hour days instead of 5 8's for example.

There is more but those are the big ones. Ultimately, the work life balance is very near the top available in this profession.

    LATE EDIT:

I was responding via phone so half the replies I sent went to the OP. I answered them all so far tho, so if you don't see an answer, just look around on the parent post. Sorry about that, I will be more diligent.

Why do people say “correct” when I’m explaining something to them?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 07:27 PM PDT

Not sure if I'm being petty, but I have a pet peeve about this and curious what others on this sub think or have been exposed to.

There have been times when someone asks me a question, and as I'm explaining it they will say "correct". When someone does this, I generally have the gut reaction that they don't know what's going on and are trying to fake it. Alternatively, they actually do understand it and are wasting my time by having me explain it. Either scenario aggravates me, but I always bite my tongue.

However, I've had this happen at different companies over the years and it's mostly folks in a certain age bracket (something like those who graduated college 2005 to 2009). I'm wondering this is lingo that's common at certain firms or circles or something else

    Curious on folks thoughts

When the manager asks how the team is doing

Offered a job in Industry. I leaving Public too soon?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 06:26 PM PDT

I'm currently a 2 year staff at a national (non-Big 4) firm making $59,000. Today I was offered an Accounting Analyst position at a Fortune 500 company paying about $75,000 per year in a low COL area.

The position relates to accounting policy, meaning the nature of the work revolves around SEC reporting, implementation of accounting standards, and accounting for specific (and often complex) transactions.

I'm very tempted to accept this offer, however I am concerned about the potential career implications of leaving public accounting too soon. Am I right to worry that I may be pigeonholing myself and possibly slowing the progress of my career?

    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    What goes around comes around

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 08:39 PM PDT

So I work at a small CPA firm (10 people total), and today I finished a project and my manager, who is a partner, immediately goes around the office asking other people if they have any work I can do. They all say they don't. He then takes a huge compilation engagement that was on a coworkers desk and tells me to do it. Now mind you, I understand I'm not getting paid to twiddle my thumbs all day, I get that. Its just that I'm the only accountant here that doesn't have a CPA license, and It'd be nice if I could get some time at work to study for it, which he's never liked. Little does he know I just got an offer at a F500 at a 22% raise. I'll be putting in my 2 weeks in next week after I get an official start date. I'm considering not giving the 2 weeks if they disrespect me in any way when I tell them. They don't offer any type of CPA reimbursal at my current firm either, and the new employer does. It sure does feel good to have them by the balls. Anyway, just had to get that off my chest. Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect fellow bean counters.

    Likelihood of Holiday Inventory Count??

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 09:00 PM PDT

My company (big4)'s holiday inventory count reserve schedule and I got booked December 24th to the 26th. I already have flights booked to visit my family the whole span of the christmas to new years break across the country. What do you think the likelihood is of getting chosen? I figure the 24th and 25th most people won't be counting because its Christmas. For what it's worth, I'm at probably the top 5 largest offices of my company in the US, so there are more associates to go around for the inventory counts.

I already told my HR team multiple times I wouldn't be available and they pretty much said tough luck and that I would still have to find a way to the count no matter where I was in the country.

Trying to make my dad's firm go paperless...software suggestions?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 05:30 PM PDT

TL;DR – I want to go paperless/digitize my tiny firm from soup to nuts and make it as seamless and easy for an old timer to use. We use GoSystem for tax prep, does any software play nice with that? Any suggestions appreciated!

My dad (in his 60's) runs his own accounting and tax law firm out of the basement and after a 10 year hiatus I'm back in the basement again working with him, the plan being to eventually take it over. We do the gamut of simple to complex returns for a variety of business and personal clients, and lots of estate work. Our workhorse is and has been GoSystem forever and it's not likely to change any time soon, since we, and our two part timers are all comfy with it. The tech in the office has basically not been updated in the 10 years I've been gone except for the most basic scanner. He's also managed to figure out how to email most of our client's pdf copies of their returns, which is a start and I think a client portal would really help kicks things up a notch. However, I'm getting really sick of the mountains of paper everywhere, the terrible communications and workflow issues associated with all clients emailing him directly making his gmail inbox a terrible bottleneck, and the boxes and boxes of years and years worth of returns scattered all around my parent's basement (read: my office for now).

    1. I'm trying to find a good document management solution, but I can't get a straight answer on whether it has to do more than just scanning and saving everything in Dropbox, or I need to shell out more for a Thomson Reuters product that will more seamlessly integrate with GoSystem.

    2. Is there a client portal software that offers direct upload of a W-2/1099 straight into GoSystem? I've been doing a ton of research and I can't even get a straight answer from the TR sales guys. I think a lot of our clients would be receptive to a client portal if we make it simple as possible for them to use.

    3. What's the best way to break the inbox bottleneck? Is there an email option that can somehow route emails into a central inbox we can all see, and then just drag and drop the email into whichever staff member's inbox needs to address it? In my research so far, it looks like Netsuite offers some of this kind of stuff, but not quite all of it, and I'd need to still get more products to deal with the doc management/scanning/archiving old stuff but I'm not 100% sure. Also, whenever I go to a smaller accounting firms website, I always click on the "Client Login" link and it seems like a lot of firms are using SmartVault. Does anyone have experience with that and know if it does the trick or if it can work well or even needs to work well with GoSystem?

Thanks for any suggestions. I have free reign to put this project into play, I just don't want to spend a fortune not knowing what I'm really getting or if it'll even work right.

Have you heard back from Big4(Bay Area) yet?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 06:04 PM PDT

I interviewed with one of the Big 4 on the 11th and was told that I will hear back from them within a week, but I still didn't get any emails yet. Was just wondering if any experienced something like this before. Also, do they usually send out rejection letters or just remain in silence if you don't make it?

    Switching from audit to tax?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 06:22 PM PDT

I'm in Big Four assurance and I hate it. I'm a staff one and I recently did very well on REG. I feel like I'm more suited for tax than audit and I am wanting to switch. Has anyone done this before? Any ideas on strategy or how difficult it would be to make the switch?
