CNBC reporting new aspect of Tesla CAO leaving

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 11:16 AM PDT

CNBC now reporting that after the "funding secured" tweet, he tried to offer advice and express concerns regarding the potential going private deal and was ignored by Musk and others. After feeling that his view was ignored, he believed that it was not the right fit.

    Edited to add: https://www.cnbc.com/2018/09/07/tesla-cao-dave-morton-quit-after-concluding-musk-wasnt-listening.html

"The day after he started, Musk tweeted he was considering taking the company private with "funding secured." Morton, who left his role as Seagate's CFO to join Tesla, was not flustered by the tweet and met with Musk to go over various details that would make a take-private difficult. He brought up specific details such as equity change of control provisions and potential step-ups in the value of Tesla's debt associated with a new controlling shareholder.

Musk and other executives didn't seem to care about the various financial obstacles, which concerned Morton, said the person. When Morton offered advice about capitalizing the company through other means rather than going private, he was ignored, said the person."

Morton joined the company as chief accounting officer with the expectation he would eventually take over or Ahuja as CFO, the person said. Ahuja returned to the CFO position in 2017 after retiring in 2015.

"Safest" way to invest $500,000 for passive income?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 07:03 PM PDT

My 80 yr old grandma, retired, will have $500,000 to invest if she sells her second house (after taxes, fees, and paying off loan). Someone on /r/personalfinance suggested a 50-50 stocks/bonds investment where "the rule of thumb is that you can withdraw 4% per year forever without running out." That sounds great since she needs a source of income to live out the rest of her life.

Is that true? I'm an investing novice, but that sounds too good to be true.

    What would you suggest?

Why are casino stocks down so much this year?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 12:01 PM PDT

MGM, WYNN, LSV are all down 12-25% for the year. I'm not personally invested in any (sold the WYNN shares I owned back in January), but am curious about this sector-wide retreat. If the US economy is doing (relatively) well, wouldn't consumers with more disposable income be flocking to the casinos to lose it?

Using Stock Broker Margin to Buy Real Estate

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 03:54 PM PDT

I'm looking to buy a home that I will stay in for 7 years. I have a 200k stock portfolio and the home costs 100k. To reduce on mortgage fees and interest, I've found that Interactive Brokers will give me a variable loan of 100k @ 3.2% (https://www.interactivebrokers.com/en/index.php?f=1595)

Seems like it's cheaper than an ARM loan which is ~4.2% and gives me the flexibility of any cash buyer in the real estate market.

    Does this leverage make sense?

The millionth person asks a hypothetical about Ford

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 03:40 PM PDT

I was thinking today about the future of EVs. Ford is switching to trucks and vans exclusively right? Well EV long haul trucks are on the horizon, along with buses, so realistically a compelling EV pickup with actual towing and range capacity is pretty doable. Tesla already has an SUV equivalent.

So conceivably (hear me out) Ford could bring an EV pickup/van onto the market, not competing directly with Tesla the way other car companies are doing with small sedans, and instead aiming for the market they always had, and to a degree are synonymous with. Especially if they did an EV 350 van, I'm pretty sure long term construction/delivery businesses will be all about that.

So now we get to the end of the hypothetical where i ask, what do we all think the over/under is on Ford being smart enough and capable enough to pull that off?

Why and how do you invest in junk bonds?

    Bonds or bond etf?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 01:58 PM PDT

I have an opportunity to invest substantial cash that I can let grow for 6 years more or less until I begin pulling funds for retirement. I'm already invested equities and see this as a hedge as well as a partial source of income when retired. I can pretty well judge the comparative risk on bonds, but how does one do this with bond etfs?

Share Trading Games that include the Shanghai Stock Exchange/China A-shares?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2018 12:50 AM PDT

Title. I'm currently developing a project for university that involves experiencing the share market in China for the first time. Obviously, I don't want to risk actual capital on this, so the project would involve using either a share market game or a trial demo of some software. I'm aware that many games have the Hong Kong Stock Exchange available - what about the Shanghai exchange?

How are after hours orders filled when market opens?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 02:37 PM PDT

Noobie question, probably for moronic monday/wednesday but I'd like to know sooner than later.

If, say, TD Ameritrade has 100 different market orders from different people for the same stock how does it actually get filled the next day? Are they filled in the order in which they were received? If you place the order at 11pm and that stock is going up the next day... are you going to wind up buying at a higher price than someone who ordered at 5pm? Are there mere seconds between the two? Minutes? Hours? Or does it just all depend on how many people are selling at the same time.

It's rare that it would matter, I'm not an aspiring day trader or anything, but there are just a few circumstances where I'd like to know if it matters when I place the order the day before trading.

Anyone feel like Intel can be a good buy soon?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 01:30 PM PDT

It's curved down near the year low. I'm watching for an uptick to buy some shares.

I know MU has been in discussion a lot and has been dipping. But we know that Intel ain't going anywhere.

Thoughts or tips on how you would proceed? I've just started trying to be more active with my account and participate in more swing trading!

    Thanks my fellow investors!

    IRA Investing Advice.

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 06:22 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

So right now the mutual fund that my IRA is invested in is LGLCX which has an expense ratio of 1.70% which I believe is too high but it's return is around 15% over 5 years (newer fund).

My question is, would you guys keep your money invested in that or switch over to an S&P 500 index fund?

Also, we met with a financial adviser and want to open an IRA for my wife, he also suggested fund with a higher expense ratio but those funds have higher returns than an index fund.

I keep reading that index funds are the way to go because you can "rarely" beat the market and the low cost of the maintenance.

What do you all do? What would you suggest?

    Margin Call

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 05:41 PM PDT

So I opened a margin account on ETrade just to see how it worked. I noticed that they were offering $0.22 of credit on my $0.11 cash balance, so I didn't pay much attention and didn't use it. I am one of the crazies who is heavily invested in AMD (common shares held long), and as usual, when the fever catches people, some of the less restrained get the idea that the price is going to double in a few days. I have learned that if you catch the upward momentum just as it crests, you can sell covered calls against an otherwise long position which provide a bit of extra money without trying to swing trade. The only real risk is being forced to pay rather substantial cap gains taxes if the shares get called away, but in practice the ludicrous strike prices make that risk acceptable.

On Wednesday I sell 150 Sep7$33 covered call contracts (15k shares) for an average price of $0.1 each and pocket $1300 ($850 after taxes). I watch the price of the options fall throughout the day and feel pretty good about myself, having made some pretty easy money with minimal risk. About 0330, I wake up with my cell phone dinging with an Alert from ETrade. I review it and ETrade has sent me a margin call for $43k. This seems odd, as I haven't traded anything on margin. I frantically review my options contracts to ensure that I didn't muck something up, and everything is in order: I have 15000 shares which a deranged person could in theory call away at a $4.50 premium over the current asking price. It seems like everything is okay, but the margin call note doesn't provide much explanation, so I continue to worry.

I stay up until 0600 CST when I immediately call ETrade and politely ask what boils down to "WTF?". Their customer service remains great, and the guy checks in on it. He says that since I had only opened the margin account a few days before, the shares that I held were not "transferred to that account", so ETrade's system mistakenly thought that I had sold a bunch of uncovered calls on margin and wanted me to put up equity to cover that. It was odd that all of my holdings showed up in the same place on my end but on theirs the accounts apparently remained separate for a time. In any event, he was able to clear things up and the angry "Margin Call!" message disappeared from my ETrade dashboard today.

All's well that ends well, but it certainly puckered the old sphincter for a few hours.
