Posted: 06 Sep 2018 05:58 PM PDT I was invited to speak to some college kids about what its like to study for and take the CPA exam. What do you wish someone would have told you when you were in college and considering taking/studying for the exam? I've thought about some basic stuff like eat right, get enough sleep, prepare to spend about 200hr's studying for each section, create a plan and stick to it. What else am i missing? Posted: 06 Sep 2018 10:26 AM PDT It wasn't anything I didn't expect. This is my 2nd time taking it, so I was well prepared for the testing. Not sure how well I did... multiple choice did seem to increase in difficultly the second batch... but I'm not sure. The sims seemed a little "easier" than last time. Ranging anywhere from IFRS to gov- know it all (no details). Having excel made mapping out everything so much easier. Overall just know the basics and applications of concepts. Don't need to really go into the crazy details to pass. ye, watch me walk away with a 72 and hate myself. Good luck pals [link] [comments]

I think I don’t like accounting Posted: 06 Sep 2018 11:31 AM PDT Yet here I am in my third year sitting in intermediate with no other goals or ambitions. I hate the course work but I really don't know what else to do in my life so I figured I would just get my degree. Gpa wise I'm good with a 3.8. Anyone else feel like this or felt like this? Posted: 06 Sep 2018 03:28 PM PDT Current Job: Accounting Manager (90k +10% bonus), small company, have my CPA. I know I will take a pay cut but I also believe there is value in the experience on my resume if I ever want to make $200k+ one day. Please let me know if I'm wrong? [link] [comments]
Auditing alone at the client late at night sucks Posted: 06 Sep 2018 09:06 PM PDT It's 9pm. I'm the only person from my firm who was here at the client all day, and I've been working on another client remotely from this client's premises all day, so I didn't even talk to anyone at the client today. And everyone at the client left by 6pm, so now here I am at 9pm feeling sad and lonely. To top it all off, the restroom is outside my client's office suite, and my client's doors automatically lock after a certain time (probably around 6pm), so I have to use my bag to keep the door open while I rush to the restroom to take a leak, leaving my laptop and bag unsupervised (granted, no one else is here, but still). Maybe the worst part is when the motion-sensing lights go off after every 15 minutes or so, and I have to stand up so they'll turn back on. Then again, one Friday night I had worked alone at the client until 10pm; that was pretty depressing. Also, working at the office alone until midnight on a Saturday night was no fun, either. I've worked past midnight many times as part of a team, and it's way more bearable than this. [link] [comments]
Anyone else still not used to extended 1120's being due in October? Posted: 06 Sep 2018 02:53 PM PDT I can't get away from thinking that all extended calendar year 1120's are due in October, not September like they used to be. I've been leaning on a manger to get an 1120 out next week because there's a 5472 filing with it and I don't want to chance a $10K late filing penalty. I asked him for a status update today and he's like "what's the rush? It isn't due for another month." Now I don't know whether to feel like a douchebag or relieved that we have another month to get shit done. [link] [comments]
[CAN] I don't want to get my CPA, but I still want to be in accounting. What should I do? Posted: 06 Sep 2018 08:25 AM PDT I'm in my last year of university getting my accounting degree. I honestly hate school so much. I've done different co-ops, not just at an accounting firm and I was always in an accounting role. I'm not pursuing my masters because my grades are not good enough, I have no references, and I do not have the funds. I also do not like being in school. I don't have a job lined up after I graduate so I am doing job searching. I don't know if I want to be in public accounting or industry (but I have been leaning towards industry). I've heard the PEP program takes a lot of time and studying and I don't know if I have it in me to do it. So is it ok or will I be ok not getting my designation? EDIT: Thank you everyone for their input. It has given me a lot to think about. [link] [comments]
[CAN] [CFE] How do you know what quant to do on Day 1? Posted: 06 Sep 2018 02:38 PM PDT I've been having trouble deciding exactly which quant to do on Day 1. For example, on the week 3 case, I completely missed that I needed to do a NPV calc for the distillery expansion. Anybody have any suggestions on how to figure out exactly which quant is appropriate? Posted: 06 Sep 2018 11:38 AM PDT Hey, I have a question for the qualitative part of Day 1. Essentially sometimes I see that a strategic alternative just has Pro's and Con's and sometimes I see that it has Pro's, Con's and also other qualitative aspects that are listed as neither. I am a bit confused a bit about that, as I have failed both Day 1 practice cases in Capstone 2 and have a hard time debriefing it to understand what I could've done better. Essentially what I do is that I just do 2-3 Pro's and Con's per alternative and tie them back to the situational analysis: Eg: Strategic Alternative that allows sheep to walk around on vineyard Pro: Would be in line with HEVW's current organic practices (Listed as a strength in SWOT) Eg: Strategic Alternative that would allow HEVW to sell wine to asia Con: HEVW would not take advantage of the provincial tax cut on VQA wine sales (Listed as opportunity in SWOT) Sometimes I tie a pro/con not to SWOT but to the mission/vision or KSF Any input appreciated, thanks [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Sep 2018 02:35 PM PDT How difficult would it be for me to find a job if I left my accounting firm right now? I'm burnt out with an unrealistic deadline and on the inside am going crazy. Am I hopeless if I resigned and walked out the door right now? I'm a CPA, "supervisor" aka super senior with 6 years of experience. I'm officially burnt out. Can I leave tonight? How is the 11th so far away?!? Posted: 06 Sep 2018 10:03 PM PDT Waiting for my FAR score to be released on the 11th. On a Tuesday too, which just begs for most of a week to be wasted on excessive binge drinking in sheer happiness/distraught. On another note - Does anyone else have rewards set up for them when they pass each section? I've got 4 Dogfish 120's, one for each section, that've been aging for about 4 months so far. Hoping I'll be cracking one open this Tuesday. Add: took the test 8/29 [link] [comments]

Posted: 06 Sep 2018 01:14 PM PDT US Department of Justice accounting - $92-108K on Glassdoor Federal Govt Auditor - 108k avg on federalpay.org General consensus is that government pays bad, but these seem like good numbers and that's without considering benefits. I'm a student and I'm curious about the discrepancy. Auditor pay is quoted as ~60-70k in most searches. [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Sep 2018 06:04 PM PDT Do any of you bring in your own computer peripherals like mouse and keyboard? do any of you use a mechanical keyboard, or a ten key less keyboard? What about a 60% board? considering 10 key less or even a 60% but not sure how I'd adjust with a smaller board in excel. [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Sep 2018 12:05 PM PDT Looking to make the move out of public accounting. I've worked at a top 8 firm for 5 years in tax and have earned my CPA. Currently a senior at the firm and most likely will be promoted to supervisor after the 2019 busy season. I worked mostly on pass-throughs and individual returns. Are there tax jobs outside of public accounting that are not primarily focused on provision work for corps? I know my next career move should be something I'm "passionate" about, but accounting is accounting. Any advice/opinions with similar experiences or positions I should shoot for is greatly appreciated. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
