Trying to convince my boss to modernize and reduce clutter.

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 05:53 PM PDT

My boss and I basically run our whole company, it is not nearly as large as it once was. We have a warehouse of inventory that is 10-20 years old. Almost none of the products are sought after any more - outdated or now unpopular. I suggest to take the loss and sell everything he can for WHATEVER he can get. This way we can utilize the space for active money making, as space is something we desperately need at the moment.

His philosophy is that since he can't make his money right now back he "has no choice" but to store it all for another 30 years for when "it comes back around" or "becomes collectible". I don't see how that follows since the space could be used for active business and growth. I especially don't understand when the space is costing him much money in electric, heating, and taxes.

Has anyone dealt with this type of situation before? Are there any resources that might encourage him to move product rather than wait and hope it's worth something someday?

On a side note, he also refuses to move to drop shipping because "it destroys jobs and is ruining small business."

He has so much potential to grow and make money, but he seems to be intent on barely surviving.

Note: I am not overstepping my bounds by suggesting these things. We have already taken some steps in marketing and the like. So, he does see the value in some of my modern business ideas.

Emotionally blackmailed by freeelancer - advice needed

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 06:41 AM PDT

Hi all, I'm wondering if anyone can give me any advice regarding an issue I keep running into with a freelancer.

I run an online agency and hire a few freelancers to help with things like writing blog posts, doing data entry, etc on an as-needed basis. The work is purely done on a freelance basis and those who freelance for us can work whatever hours they choose, and do as much/little work as they want. Most have other clients as well. The main requirement I have is that they let me know when they want some work to do, and that they submit their work to the deadlines we both agree upon before the work starts.

Now almost everyone I've worked with on a freelance basis is cool with this and does a great job, however I have one freelancer who, to put it plainly, is a pain in the ass. She'll ask if I have any writing work for her, and then 50% of the time won't do it on time, which causes issues down the line. Now her redeeming quality is that she's a great writer (when she actually does it), but it's got to the point where I can't handle the stress of covering her work last minute, doing it myself etc. Last week I told her things needed to change otherwise I wouldn't be able to send her any more work. As you can probably guess by this post, nothing has changed.

Today I've let her know that I won't be able to send her any future work as it's not working out. And I'm now being bombarded with emails telling me that I'm ruining her life, she can't afford to survive without her freelance income, she can't do anything right, and more. I'm not a dick and I've tried to be understanding in the past and it makes zero difference. She's told me she has no respect for me and things are just extremely weird. Everyone else I've hired in the past has been professional, but this freelancer is so emotional it's hard to cope with.

Has anyone been through this before? My thinking is that I should just cut all ties and not respond but at the same time, I don't want her to be completely screwed through losing her freelance position. Is she trying it on or ?? Any help would be great.

Anyone having problems with Square from time to time?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 04:17 PM PDT

Not sure why but some merchant debit cards (major banks) will not work. Whether with tap or chip cards. One card will be fine and transaction completed but soon after, same bank card for another client will be unaccepted.

I will call customer service tomorrow but I thought I would ask everyone here about this problem and see if there is a solution.

    Thanks.

    Buying into family business

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 02:18 PM PDT

    Hey Reddit!

I was laid off at the beginning of June due to downsizing but since then I have been working off the books for my girl friends step father who owns a Pest Control company, it's mainly him and maybe 1 other employee.

But due to age and health he is beginning to get to the end of his rope and wants more of a back seat role which he can't do at the moment.

So yesterday as we were finishing he suggested that he'll pay for me to get my license ($500) and I can potentially buy into the business as a "Junior Partner."

Seeing as I have no clue about this type of stuff what should I absolutely do before possibly doing this type of situation? Financials, Legal aspects? Is there a way to protect my investment in the event my girlfriend and I decide to go our separate paths?

    Thanks in advance.

    Marketing ROI Dashboard

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 05:57 PM PDT

    Hello !

I am looking to correlate revenue to marketing spend. I'm planning to create a spreadsheet like the following. I assume this is a generic need. Is there any S/W that already can connect to these different ad platforms and get this data for me monthly? I can input the revenue and profit myself.

    Internet Business

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 01:40 PM PDT

I have a question hopefully some of you have had experience with. I started a small business when I was in college and by the time I sold it at age 26 I had 25 employees. I recently came up with an idea for an internet based company, on where there is a demand with slim to no competition right now. I have little to no knowledge of the internet side of business although I have been cramming as much as humanly possible in the past three months. Has anyone here been in my shoes and went the road of just hiring a website developer/architect while learning as you go or partnered up with an developer or a CTO of sort to start the company. I feel one way would be like taking the steps and the other an escalator with the main issue giving shares up.

Any suggestion for a warehouse stock/inventory management program?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 03:07 PM PDT

    Hi,

I've got a small business in the automotive industry. We mainly sell car tuning parts (spoilers, bumpers, splitters, etc.). What would be a good program to manage these kind of products, because right know I am using Excel and it is highly inefficient.

    Thanks

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 06:25 PM PDT

A relative won money and is going to start a small business, should I co own it? He will pay for the startup costs of the business. Is there risk of me losing my own money if the business fails, or is it a good idea?

Tips on how to do effective market research?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 03:01 PM PDT

So I think I have a great service to provide small businesses but I am not sure what the demand is for those services and completely at a lost for how to do effective market research. I have done a ton of google searches but it hasn't yielded much and I am not sure if I am on the right path. Any tips would be great!

I'm hiring my mom. How open should we be about our relationship?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 10:35 AM PDT

I am 1/3 owner of an athletic facility that, among other things, does after-school programs at local elementary schools. My mother is a certified coach at her own facility in another town about an hour away. We needed an assistant coach for the fall and Mom happened to be available, so (with the blessing of the other two owners) we're hiring her and she and I will work together in one of our schools for the semester.

I'm wondering how open we should be with the school and the kids and stuff? I usually refer to my assistant coach as "Coach Firstname" in front of kids. She just sent me her bio for our website and it's full of references to being my mom. I love that she's proud of me but inside me there's an insecure teenager who feels like this makes me look unprofessional.

I take after my dad, so no one would know by looking at us that we're related. This is really a question of how we should talk about each other to the school and the kids.

Small family ran online clothing “boutique.” Looking for advice.

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 02:06 PM PDT

My Sister-in-Law and cousin have started an online clothing shop that sells Southern styled clothes. They've taken care of finances so far by getting a valid tax ID, separate business bank account, etc, but I'm reaching out for any and all advice I can get for them!

So far, most business has been done on their Facebook group, "Southern Roots Boutique." They buy the clothes once customers have made an "order" requesting a specific article of clothing and size. Customers then check out via PayPal and the ladies, SiL and cousin, order the clothes and send the tracking number/invoice to the customers. Cost of clothing includes taxes and PayPal fee already.

Looking for advice on marketing, shipping, etc. Thank you in advance! (Feel free to check out the group! I can upload screenshots via Imgur for those against Facebook)

    Apple Bank Review?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 12:38 PM PDT

I'm in NYC and I'm looking to open a business bank account.

I'd ideally like no minimums to keep an account open, no fees if I don't spend, online banking and a bank that has multiple branches.

Apple Bank has been thrown around a lot. WHat's been everyone's experience? And if there's another bank I should look into, please let me know. Along with what I should look for when choosing a bank.

Can someone offer some advice on funding?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 12:35 PM PDT

    Hi! Here's as concise of an explanation as I can offer;

I am currently about 60% through a loan I took at a slightly higher interest rate from a lender who's not a bank, but who's much better than a merchant cash advance.

They offered me refinancing, however despite my credit score being around 60 points higher than it was at the origination of the first loan, and never missing a payment on it, they are only offering refinancing at between 4% and 8% higher.

I've sought out funding from a yet better company, who is offering me a much better rate and a longer term, but them being more legitimate means they need more comprehensive paperwork. I don't have it now, but I'm working quite feverishly to get it together. It will still take a considerable amount of time.

My question is, would it be a stupid choice to refinance the loan with the original lender at an exorbitant interest rate to keep me afloat while I sort everything out with the lower rate, and refinance again with another company?

There are no early payment fees with the company I already have a loan with, and the whole reason I'm asking is that this slow season almost wiped me out. There's a long history behind why I'm struggling and it isn't due to the business not being viable. I'd argue the opposite, since I was pretty much drowning in unfiled tax forms and unpaid returns, fees, and all sorts of things when I took over the other half of the business and I've managed to fight my way through most of it. I just can't stomach the thought of not being able to keep the place running due to 2 or 3 months of slow business after coming so far.

Should I be taking an opposing counsel's phone call directly?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 08:24 AM PDT

My partner and I have been running a profitable small business together for over the past two years. A big mistake I know, we've never drafted or signed a business operating agreement. Since day one, I spend about 45+ hours physically at our business location and more hours working mobilely.

Due to general disagreements and creative differences, we've decided to part ways with myself stepping away from the business. Over the past several weeks, we've discussed him buying me out and have even exchanged dollar figures that were a little apart from what we each had in mind.

Unfortunately, our relationship is no longer amicable and my partner has being difficult to work with altogether. Small issues that naturally arise and easy to fix are being blown out of proportion by him. I simply just want to take my buyout and move forward.

My partner told me today that his counsel is going to give me a phone call. I have no idea really what to expect on the call. I assume it could be some lowball buyout offer.

I've had consultations with different attorneys but have yet to retain one. Should I be taking this phone call? If I do, how should I approach it? Is there harm with taking the call and hearing him out without agreeing to anything or giving my opinion?

How to keep a VAT account?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 11:54 AM PDT

So, I will be running a small convenience store and sandwich bar soon. I'm having difficulty grasping how I'm supposed to keep account of the VAT. Obviously, some things you pay VAT on, some things you don't, so if at the end of the day my till tells me I've taken 1200, how am I supposed to know how much of that I need to pay VAT on?

    Dog service business in NYC

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 11:00 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

My husband started his own dog business in NYC at the beginning of this year. He provides training, boarding, and walking services in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

I've kept track of all the financials like dog walks, boards, and training, receipts categorized and where to find them (email or paper) should we be audited, all payment methods from clients (cash, venmo, direct deposit).

My question is that I want to be as prepared as I can be come tax time. I met with an accountant earlier in the year who suggested I make a business name and register as an LLC, get Quickbooks, make a website, register with the state, and so on. My concern is that she didn't know any accounting laws specifically geared toward dog services (like in NYC dog walks are actually a taxable service). She also was pushing for us to form a business rather than a sole proprietorship. The consultation was informative but ultimately I wasn't too confident in her abilities to help me.

Does anyone know any accounting services specifically for small businesses in niche markets? Or guides for doing taxes ourselves? I've been paying quarterly estimated taxes but still worry I'm going to mess up and get screwed over somehow! I've checked r/accounting and google and found a few companies but none of them got back to me.

Two owner partnership decision making / operating agreement

    Posted: 09 Aug 2018 07:08 AM PDT

Hi everyone, our small businesses is moving soon from a 3 owner partnership down to 2. With 3 owners it was really easy to make important decisions as the majority ruled in these situations.

Now that we are moving from 3 to 2 partners at 50/50 ownership we need to make changes to our operating agreement. I am not sure how we are going to settle big decisions where we are both at opposite ends.

How have others done this in the past? I know there are 51/49 ownership scenarios but I am not sure I want to go down this path yet and have one side lose the majority of its power in decision making. Are there any other ways to do this besides shifting the power to one partner?
