Was Hit & Run, Insurance "Forgot" to Give Me Collision Coverage

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 02:16 PM PDT

    Hey all,

I have GEICO insurance for my auto. I was involved in a Hit & Run 2 days ago, the other driver fled the scene (8 really kind-helpful witnesses, but no one got the plate, I *do* know the car & color, looking for cameras in area now), and my car was badly damaged (front drivers fender, door, glass, door won't open (totaled?)) I had minor injuries (goose-egg on head, minor cuts from glass) but am OK otherwise. The police on scene stated that I was definitely not at fault for the accident, and even if I was, the fact that the other driver fled the scene automatically makes them the guilty party

Anyhow, I called my insurance immediately to file a claim, and to my surprise, they informed me that I do not have Collision coverage. Now, this came as a shock to me, as my car is financed, and the lender I went thru (a local credit union) requires this on any car they hold a lien to (in fact, it's NYS law I *think*). The GEICO rep I spoke with on the phone was taken aback by this little fact when I mentioned it, so he said that once the car is evaluated by one of the accident reps (will happen tomorrow at the shop I had it towed to), GEICO might be able to help me in some way (I can't remember exactly what he said, I was kind of still in shock from the crash at the time.)

I went to the Credit Union yesterday, in person, just to confirm the need for collision coverage with a lien, and it is indeed a requirement. I am really scared, and angry about all this. What can I really do, here? I'm a recent grad, I just bought this car a month ago (2009 model year), and can't afford to have it fixed on my own. I still owe $3,900 on it. My credit is great, and I don't wanna incur any more debt in fixing this thing. What should/can I do?

Help - Large tree fell on above ground pool, $5000 deductible

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 06:00 PM PDT

I have a 26 foot, round, above-ground pool. A very large willow tree fell on it tonight and smashed a side down, destroying the pool. Our pool deck is connected to the house so I think homeowner's may cover it. I'm worried that even after tree removal, cleaning up the yard, removing the old pool, and getting a quote for a new pool and installation, I still won't have $5000 worth of damage. Just worried about the whole situation and wonder if anyone here can give me any advice. Thanks in advance.

State Farm drive safe and save in a sports car?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 11:48 PM PDT

Hey everyone. Trying to get insurance on my BMW M3. Insurance for the car is expensive af already and being 17 doesn't help 1 bit. The lowest rates I got were with state farms drive safe and save.

Welllll I'm not exactly the type of driver that will be saving at all with this thing. My question is will my rates go up for being a "bad driver?"

Obviously in an M3 I'm accelerating hard, driving at speeds of 80+, taking corners quickly, sometimes braking hard, and my business requires me to drive early and late. (Like 4am and sometimes midnight. Also I do quite a bit of driving.

    Thank you guys so much!!!

Basement flooded due to weather. Should we start cleaning up?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 12:28 PM PDT

We filed our claim but they said someone will get back to us within 3 days. We have most of the water up but carpets are still soaked. Do we start pulling up the carpet or will that hurt our claim. I can't wait days it will start getting mold, right?

    Insurance and Mental Health

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 03:19 PM PDT

Was hoping to learn more about health insurance, mental health, and coverage or lack thereof from an insurance perspective.

I find it is easy to shit on insurance companies for not covering certain things etc. but I was wondering if people could share personal insight as well as other sources of information, such as websites or books, that would give me a deeper and more well rounded understanding of how insurance companies tackle mental health, risk analysis, costs, and coverage.

Not using active health insurance = insurance fraud?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 09:45 AM PDT

    Location: Pennsylvania

I work as a medical receptionist for a low-income health clinic. Most of our patients have Medicare and/or Medicaid. Some patients who make more money have purchased plans through the state marketplace, and some of those plans have high-deductibles that don't cover anything (even routine PCP visits) until the deductible has been reached. These deductibles are usually several thousand dollars - substantial totals for low-income people.

Our health clinic offers income-based sliding scales for uninsured patients, and for patients who are dependents on an insurance plan who have safety/confidentiality concerns.

Up until recently, the unfortunate patients with high-deductible plans have been eligible to use our sliding scales as well, under the assumption that it's better for the clinic to get the sliding scale payment rather than billing the insurance company who will pass the full cost of the visit on to the patient, who likely cannot afford to pay and the clinic gets no payment. When we put a patient on the sliding scale, we do not bill anything to their insurance (if they have insurance).

Recently, my employer has changed that policy and states that if any patient has active insurance that we participate with, we must go through that insurance for billing (except in cases where there are safety/confidentiality concerns). This explicitly includes patients with high-deductible plans. Clinic management is justifying this policy change by claiming that by not billing active insurances, we are committing insurance fraud. How true is this?

I also posted to r/legaladvice, who suggested this community might be better equipped to help.

    P&C insurance exam

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 04:45 PM PDT

For the P&C state insurance exam they break it down into 4 categories. Under General Insurance, what exactly does that mean? I'm taking the exam for the second time, I unfortunately didnt pass by 2%. Thanks, any feedback greatly appreciated.

Not at fault Subaru Claim, Update #4

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 07:53 PM PDT

I have had it with Shelter Insurance.

After their client totaled my car, I expected a fair replacement settlement. Unfortunately, I drive a fairly rare Subaru that was only produced in quantities less than 6,000 per year between 1994-2001.

My first updates talk all about my negotiations. They offered me less than half of what I determined to be fair market value, by using comp cars that were the wrong model. When I asked for equivalent comp cars (two door, manual coupes), they stated that their vendor (CCC) had only one in the database.

The one coupe in the database was adjusted to $2800 by the company, but they did not adjust for the massive rust, mismatched wheels, or dents in both doors. The comp car they offered was a single photo craigslist ad, just to clarify. Despite valuing the rusty coupe comp at $2800, they offered me only $1700.

The other comps were sedans and wagons, which usually sell for about half the price of the coups according to my research.

I detailed my complaints and offered many other comparable cars they could use via autotrader, cars.com, and craigslist. They declined to do a valuation report on any of these cars and said they weren't even required to send me the first report.

I detailed my complaints for the DOI, sent an email to my adjuster describing my predicament and disappointment, and said I would be reviewing my legal options.

I received a phone call raising the offer to $2000, but at this point I am so confident in my market research that I decided to try my luck in small claims court. I'm building a spreadsheet with each manual coupe listed for sale in the US (this is approximately 20-30 cars), along with asking prices and condition notes. I also have many photos proving the excellent condition of my car before the wreck. I believe the judge will at least hear me out instead of completely refusing negotiation like the insurance company has.

Advice would be welcome, but I expect you to downvote this thread into oblivion, just like the other three updates.

Question re: life insurance on someone else

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 08:09 AM PDT

My friend owes me $6000 and, unfortunately, he just found out that he has a terminal illness. He has no resources to repay me currently and I'm certainly not going to plague the remainder of his life with pressure about debt repayment.

I realize that this is a morbid question and I hate to have to ask it, but is it possible to take out life insurance on my friend for this purpose? Based on my research, I understand that I would have to get his approval which wouldn't be a problem. However, it seems as though $100,000 is usually the minimum life insurance payment so I'm not sure if the $6000 debt would qualify for this.
