    DASH CAM VIDEO: https://youtu.be/AZoDs5yTMi8

Background/Situation: I was driving in stop-and-go traffic on a highway, and was rear ended by a semi truck while completely stopped. My brand new Tesla was damaged, but not nearly as bad as you would think (photos included in the video link above). The driver BEGGED me not to go through his insurance because he has a bad driving record and they would cancel his coverage, and instead offered to pay me cash for the repairs. Despite being furious with him, I felt bad and decided to give him a chance. Spent the better part of the morning taking off work, going to 3 different Tesla-approved body shop to try to get a reasonable quote for him. I get a call in the afternoon from HIS insurance company, telling me that he has filed a claim against me and want to hear my side of the story.

Anyway, long story short - this guy is desperate and has turned to defrauding his insurance company and trying to screw me. All I have to say is, thank god for dash cams.

Thank you to everyone who gave me advice and perspective. Those who said I shouldn't trust him were 100% correct.

(WA) Oncologists keep getting denied by insurance company. Cross post r/cancer

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 09:25 PM PDT

I was diagnosed with a stage 1 appendicial neuroendocrine tumor in May, this type of tumor is quite rare. I saw an oncologist in town after my appendectomy (the oncologist did not do it, a general surgeon in an ED did) and he was honestly quite rude and refused to do any type of follow up or treatment with me. He wouldn't even do a CT to follow up post surgery.

So I decided I wanted a second opinion and asked my primary care for a referral to a hospital with a specialist a couple of weeks ago. My insurance denied the referral and every referral to any oncologist my doctor has tried to do since then. Some times they will find a hospital is covered but not the actual oncologists. They have checked all over the state of Washington for me.

I'm at my witts end and have lost any hope of getting a second opinion. Does anyone on here have any advice on what I could do or how to navigate these insurance denials?

    Thank you

I drove into the garage door...should I file a claim?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 06:35 PM PDT

As the title says, I accidentally drove my car into the garage door today. It was open but then I sat on the door remote and backed into it while it was closing. There is some minor cosmetic damage to my car that would require touch up paint work. The damage to the garage is more extensive and will cost somewhere from $700-$1,200. I have three companies coming tomorrow to give me quotes on repairing the garage. Note: I am not the owner, but the owner is allowing me to seek out the repair prior to her approval.

Should I file a claim for this damage? I am entirely at fault, so I ma concerned about raising my rates. Would I file with renters or auto insurance? And the last complication is that I am in the process of moving states and procuring new insurance. I have new auto insurance in effect as of yesterday, and submitted a signed document with my insurance broker to cancel my existing auto insurance. I still have my existing renters insurance, but signed up for a new policy to begin on the 22nd. If I file a renters claim with my existing company, will I have to re-sign up for renters insurance in my new state because my liability has since changed?

    Thanks!

Is it cheaper to add a driver to an insurance plan for a car? Or to add a car to an existing insured driver? Is there a third option?? (details inside)

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 10:28 PM PDT

So I have car insurance and a shitty car. My friend has car insurance and a much nicer car. He will have to leave the country for about a year. He leased his car and cannot cancel the lease early without paying more than the remainder of the lease, he's stuck with it. Instead of leaving it in a garage for the remainder of his lease (8 months), he wants to give it to me so it doesn't just go to waste. We're not going to transfer titles or leasing docs or anything like that, he'll just come back when the lease is up and return the vehicle.

Now, we're trying to figure out insurance, do I even need to get any additional coverage one way or another if he explicitly gave me permission to drive his car? If so... would it be cheaper to add a driver to his insurance as an allowed driver (me) for his car. Or would it be cheaper for me to add a vehicle to my existing insurance? Are there any other options in this scenario? I know there are exceptions for families or people living in the same home, but neither of those apply here...

    Diminished Value Claim In Georgia

    Posted: 10 Jul 2018 02:12 AM PDT

    Hello!

I'll apologize in advance for any word vomit in my following description! Thank you for taking the time to read.

Last week I was involved in an accident where a drunk driver (who incidentally also got booked on 3 other felony drug charges that night, not sure if that is at all relevant but I'm still bitter) hit the car behind me that in turn hit my own (both my insurance company(State Farm) and the the insurance company of the other lady involved (Hanover) agree that the drunk driver (Allstate) is solely at fault) while at a red light causing so far at least 8,700$ in damage according to the estimate the adjuster from State Farm provided. Apparently this estimate will go up once they get the car disassembled and according to the person I spoke with today the adjuster indicated he would come back to re-estimate the damage. That whole thing feels shady though because today when I called State Farm she acknowledged that the amount would go up but kept trying to get me to accept the current estimate which I'm not comfortable with because I feel like it creates a scenario where by accepting the 8700$ in light of the fact that the actual cost of repair will be higher is setting me up to be taken advantage of. I can't totally articulate why but the claims rep on the phone felt pushy and that is already a red flag for me.

The good news of course, I guess, is that the dealership says the car can be repaired but i'm still trying to figure all of this out to make sure I don't get (or at least as minimally as possible) screwed in this whole deal as the car itself wasn't even a year old and had less than 12,000 miles on it and had been maintained well to date.

After looking at every used car I could find at dealerships within a 5 hour radius that match the make/model/trim/mileage of my car and cross referencing it with information available from N.A.D.A and Kelley Blue Book it seems to be the case that the car had a resale/trade-in value of about 20,000$ - 24,000$ depending on various factors prior to the accident. However, now that the car has been in an accident the trade-in/resale value of the car is now less. (i don't yet know how much less, the one answer pending from my end so far is whether or not having the work done at the dealership would result in a certified used car, i'm inclined to think it wouldn't which would lower the resale value even more)

My question is, am I in a position where I am able to file a diminished value claim? The car was worth x prior to the accident in which I am in no way at fault, and now even with the repairs the car is worth less than x. I fully intended to trade the car in within the next 3 years but now it's likely that the dealership wouldn't accept it even though they themselves are doing the work on it. If I am eligible to file a diminished claim, how does that work generally? If I am not eligible to file a diminished claim, why not?

Likely I'll end up having to lawyer up at least to help recoup these out of pocket costs associated with the subsequent medical issues myself and my girlfriend (also in the car at the time) have been dealing with but I wanted to see if anyone thought I should consult a lawyer for the insurance claim side just because there is a drunk driver involved.

Thank you again for taking the time to read this and thank you for any feedback.

Why can't my insurance company that has been the cheapest quote for a year not even come close to my newly-received quotes? Is it because of "introductory" rates? If I get a quote from them in 6 months or a year will they start being competitive again??

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 11:58 PM PDT

I am comparing apples to apples here, I only get the state minimum, going for cheap not good!

Statefarm has been my company for the last year. Always being the cheapest. This 6 month-cycle I got a quote from Geico and Progressive for $100 less/6 months. Statefarm said they couldn't even come close to that, and basically said to take the other offers.

(CA) Home inspected for policy renewal and inspector saw my outdoor marijuana plants

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 08:43 AM PDT

I am located in Ontario, Canada. I have an outdoor garden with a shed and as part of the home inspection he had to check all of the buildings. I'm pretty sure he noticed the 4-foot high cannabis plants growing around the shed.

Should I be concerned about repercussions? My GF is paranoid and thinks he is going to call the cops. Personally, I think the worst that would happen is they may not renew our home insurance policy. Could you guys provide any insight or experience for a situation like this - Should I panic and uproot my precious girls, or should I stay the course with a steady hand?

    Dental insurance (California)

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 09:42 PM PDT

I was sent over by r/legaladvice. I went to the dentists office 2 years ago and got 2 fillings. At this time I had insurance. I never received a bill at the time and assumed all went well. 3 months after this procedure I lost my insurance. Now 2 years later I received a bill from the dentist for the full cost of the fillings. They said they moved offices and had computer problems so they missed a lot of people's bills. They tried to bill my insurance and obviously couldn't but I had it for three months after the procedure and they had ample time to bill me. They also provided an itemized list of the costs but could not provide any previous proof of them billing my insurance in that 3 month period. Is there any proper way if dealing with this? Also thank you so much for any advice ahead of time. I'm not trying to say they scammed me I think they genuinely made a mistake but it's caused a lot of problems.

Insurance refusing to issue direct check for supplemental damages?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 09:21 PM PDT

My car was damaged, not at fault. I had some work done for the repairs and additional damage was found. The body shop wrote up a quote for the supplemental findings and the insurance company issued the second check directly to them.

Long story short I was not happy with the work that was done and want to get the remainder of the repairs done elsewhere or not at all and deposit the myself, I may be selling my car within a few months and the additional damages are minor.

The insurance company is telling me that they CANNOT issue the supplemental check to me directly and are only allowed to issue it to the body shop. If I do not get the additional repairs completed the check will be cancelled. Is this legal and even allowed? I don't see why they wouldn't be able to issue me the check directly.

Car insurance blackmailing me/ taking my license

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 08:48 PM PDT

Hi I'm 18 years old and going to college in the fall where I will not have access to a car (living on campus). I currently share a car with my mom but barely drive and want to drop my coverage because I don't want to spend thousands of dollars on car insurance when I don't need it.

My insurance company told me that I must turn in my drivers license, which requires a fee and means that have to get another learns permit and RETAKE my drivers test. (Not much info online about this but it seems only senile old people voluntarily turn in their license)

The insurance company has no legal right to take my license and yet will force me to pay thousands when I will not be driving whatsoever.

After multiple calls the insurance lady told my dad that in order for me to keep my license and drop my insurance both of my parents would need to drop their auto insurance and house insurance.

Please help if anyone has additional information to what I can do. I have Erie insurance in PA.

    Need insurance for cancer ):

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 07:45 PM PDT

I'm 23 years old, and I am fairly certain I have testicular cancer. I have no parents to ask for advice, so I'm here asking you. I don't have health insurance offered through work, and the cheapest thing in the "healthcare marketplace" is over $250 a month. Ill make approximately 42k this year, but that's still fairly expensive since I'm sure I'll meet the 7k-10k deductable (?) that is listed. It's just very confusing, and I am putting off getting this treated because of it. Just looking to get pointed in the correct direction.

    Dropped coverage… again… [Renters Insurance]

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 07:10 PM PDT

I was hoping you all might have some guidance here 😕

I was non-renewed by my first provider (Allstate) last month due to number of claims — the first was my stolen bike in August 2016 and the other was a water leak into my apartment from the floor above me in September of 2017.

Hearing this I called Geico last month and they were able to get me insurance through Travelers, but just I received a letter in the mail today stating that my policy is being canceled early next month due to the losses I listed above.

It seems like if I try again to find another provider they'll drop me due to these two claims. My apartment complex requires that I have renters insurance. What can I do?

    Turning 26...medical insurance in CA?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 06:42 PM PDT

I will be turning 26 next March (2019). I work as an independent contractor/1099, and I haven't looked at my options thru my company (if any) since I'm still on my parent's insurance. I got married last year, and my spouse can add me to their work insurance for a couple hundred a month for the most basic policy (ouch).

    My questions:

    • Do I need to enroll during my spouse's open enrollment period in Nov-ish even though I'm still 25? Or:
    • Can I wait until March 2019 to enroll? (is turning 26 a qualifying event?)
    • Will my current insurance company (Blue Shield) give me any information about their policies on turning 26 given that I'm not the policy owner? I've read that in general, sometimes they'll cover the month, sometimes the year, sometimes not...can my parents see what exactly I'm using the insurance for?
    • Would it be cheaper to find a Covered Cal plan? We filed taxes jointly last year and I'm pretty sure we don't qualify for much aide but we do live in a high cost of living area.

Any info or help is appreciated. We signed my spouse up last year for their workplace insurance but we really don't have any idea what we're doing.

    Effects of placing claims

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 05:01 PM PDT

I have Geico for my homeowners, auto, and jewelry. In the past week, two rocks hit my windshield while driving causing very small bullseye-type cracks (both smaller than my fingernail). In my state, my auto covers windshield glass. I spoke to Geico today and there's no deductible- they can come out to have my windshield inspected and repaired or replaced at no cost apparently, based on my coverage. He said there would be no effect on my payments going forward.

My question is, as I've never filed a claim for anything, what would filing this claim do to my future insurance, premium, etc? thanks!

What are the odds my car insurance goes up if someone gets a speeding ticket in my car? Sacramento

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 12:32 PM PDT

I let someone use one of my cars when she needs it so she is on my insurance as a second driver and this is her first ticket in 30 years. I've only been driving for 5 years and have a clean record. She got a ticket for going 85 in a 65 on the freeway. I'm just wondering what are the odds my insurance will go up? I don't have full coverage because it's only a 02 Saturn (if that makes a difference) I currently pay $85/month for 2 cars with 2 insured drivers. She's disabled and uses the car for her doctors so I want her to continue to be able to use it but don't want my insurance to skyrocket.

So in August my wife would be a resident of the US for 3 years. Around the same time she's due for her citizenship interview/test. Let's say she passes. Does she still have to wait 5 years for health insurance? Or is it 3 years because she married me, a citizen? We've been trying to have a child and I want to get her checked up so that everything is fine.

Michigan - Getting Minimum Insurance as a Student?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 02:35 PM PDT

I'm getting off my parent's auto insurance and going on my own. I'm 23 and a graduate student. I qualify for all the safety/student discounts etc. I ran a quote through esurance and a few local agents (Still have one to go tomorrow). I received $200, and $250, $260/month quotes for full coverage respectively. It looks like esurance is the best so far (unless the agent tmrw can get me a better deal).

Anyways, It turns out that I can save a few bucks a month if I lower my liability to minimum. I have a 10 year old asian luxury car (worth ~$6500) - I tried quotes using an american SUV (10 years old as well) and it's about $150 or 25% cheaper. Now I've put in a decent amount of money into preventative maintenance so I'll be keeping my car.

Since I'm a graduate student with virtually no money to my name, if I were to get into a car accident and the person I hit has a $50-100k car (somewhat common here) and my minimum insurance only covers lets say $20k, would they realistically come after me knowing I'm a student who has no money? Or is it just better to pay the extra $10-$20/month for more coverage?

My parked car was hit by a utility truck - What next?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 01:49 PM PDT

Woke up in the morning and saw my bumper hanging off of my car. It was struck by a municipal electric utility truck and they had already filed a police report. They referred me to their claims department who I have been working with. I am an insured driver. They requested two quotes and have informed me to take the cheaper quote for the collision repair. They also told me they will give me $25 per day for a rental car, which won't likely cover the full cost. How can I make sure that my car will be completely fixed even if it exceed the quote amount and also that I pay no out of pocket expenses for the car which they damaged. Also, they've informed me that I will be reimbursed after I've paid the collision company, which doesn't seem right. I can't really afford to pay for the rental and repairs but they expect me to pay for it and be reimbursed after the fact. Do I have any options? Thanks!

What to expect now that my low mileage car was heavily damaged while parked?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 12:56 PM PDT

Background: As the title states, my car was slammed into while it was parked. The driver flipped and hit two other cars (the driver is okay) but my car took the brunt of the damage. I have pretty solid coverage and the other driver was insured. I filed a claim with my insurance. I called their insurance because I don't have replacement car coverage but since they were 100% at fault their insurance said they will cover it and they confirmed that the driver did file a claim and they said that they will be assuming full liability.

My car is a luxury compact crossover and it's about two years old with only 12000 miles on it. The rear suspension was badly mangled and there's all sorts of body damage to the passenger side. I've looked online and found that a comparable used car goes for around $27k-$30k so even though it's badly damaged I doubt there's that much damage to total it but who knows.

I know this is kind of generic but it caught me completely off guard and I've never considered this type of incident where my car is collateral damage. But is there anything I should be preparing for? If they try to repair it, should I be requesting additional money on top of the repair costs because it has lost value now that it has been in a major accident? Anything else I haven't thought of? Thanks for any help.

Costly Monthly Premium or Private Pay (USA)

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 12:22 PM PDT

Family of 5 - my wife works for a small firm (no employee health plan available) and I am considering taking a job in a private practice setting with a very high-deductible health insurance group plan (~$1500/m). I don't know the specifics of the plan, but I'm told it has decent coverage.

Is it worth paying the monthly premium, or would you risk it and set aside the $1500/m for medical expenses (and the penalty) to pay out-of-pocket with additional catastrophic insurance?

I have paid this high of a premium in the past and with one trip to the ER for stitches, we hit our deductible and ended up spending about $24k/year on healthcare. I am thinking that on average we will not be paying $20-25k in private pay healthcare expenses, but with 3 boys you never know so it may be a huge risk?

I have free healthcare now and would not start the job for another 10 months.

Recent accident resulting in minor damage, can I take a cash payout?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 12:11 PM PDT

Recently a truck backed into my parked vehicle while watching fireworks. At the time the individual denied knowing he did anything but let me take photos of both his insurance and drivers license. I told him I would call him soon to let him know if there was much damage because in the moment it was dark out but I could tell there was some scratches though nothing major. Well now that I have taken a good look at it there is a bit more damage than I originally thought. I was going to just let him pay me out of pocket $100-200 for me to fix it myself (compound, polish, headache fee, etc.)

BUT, now he won't answer his phone so I turned it into his insurance. I had a body shop send a quote and photos that was quite a bit more than what I was asking him for. I still believe that I could fix the majority of it myself. Is there any way that I could have his insurance company cut me a check for the quoted amount?

What is standard here? This is my first time ever dealing with an insurance company as I am a young, new driver.

    Thanks for any help!

Will insurance cover medical bill for Uninsured motorist?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 11:44 AM PDT

My friend was in a car accident it the coverage says 25/50 for Uninsured motorist and 100/300 for bodily injury.

He needed to have shoulder surgery because of the accident and the other guy just had 10000 for bodily injury coverage.

This is in Florida so it's a no fault state however it's being said that it's the other guy fault.

The lawyer says that the insurance companies are only covering 35000 of the total medical bills but it says very clearly on my friend insurance that he's covered for 100/300 for bodily injury.

This lawyer is not explaining himself clearly and the insurance company will only communicate trough the lawyer so here I am looking for some answers.

Shouldn't he get the 100/300 coverage for the hospital bills?

Shouldn't the 25/50 coverage for Uninsured motorist cover the car damage and lost wages separately from the medical bills?

If I'm not clear let me know so I'll try to explain better and thanks for your answers.

Would it be worth it for me to seek insurance?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 11:26 AM PDT

I am 24 white female who lives in texas and has had my license for a year. In that year I've been in two accidents. One not my fault, one my fault. And two tickets. One due to the at fault wreck and one for speeding. I'm a single parent on a fixed income. I don't have a vehicle myself right now but I use other people's. Would it be worth it for me to get insurance on myself to cover things if an accident happens again?

PS I'm on mobile so I'm sorry if this comes off formatted wrong.

    NYLife MBA program certifications?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 10:13 AM PDT

    Hello all,

So I'm a young MBA graduate ( I finish in december) and after three interviews I was offered a trainee program with a new NY Life branch that wants to sponsor me for my Life and Health license exam then the securities licenses as well. They said if it doesn't work out I'm ok to leave (no contract). I don't think I'm interested in selling life insurance, I'd prefer to work in banking or a salaried position.

I was wondering if these licenses are worth getting any way since it's sponsored, will they do me any good or make me stand out in positions where I won't be selling life insurance or should I just not bother studying (while working atm) and just tell them I'm not interested?
