What are your most highly recommenced learning resources?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 10:49 AM PDT

Hello, I am a young man interested in learning to invest in stock, I know there are a lot of online courses but I'm having trouble finding a beginner friendly course that is cheap or even free. I am super frugal and love to make money but not spend it, so I would love if you guys could give me some of your favorite cheap or free learning resources. If there was some legendary course that I'm yet to find that may be on the more expensive side I would still be willing to take a look into it.

I am really new into it so I have been looking for a course that starts from the absolute beginning and most basic level.

Also I know there is already a large thread about places to learn but it is a year old and I have a suspicion that over a year plenty of new resources develop.

    Thanks!

Are there municipal bond funds that work the same way as individual bond purchases?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 06:25 AM PDT

I was wondering as I am working with my retired father. Does Fidelity or other brokerages have municipal bond funds that have tax-free distributions?

Does Tesla (TSLA) have a bounce coming?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 05:45 AM PDT

Yesterday Elon Musk announced that Tesla met its goal of producing 5000 Model 3 Cars in a week.

After being under pressure and repeatedly missing production targets, do you guys think this is the start of a new growth era for not only their stock but for the company? I am not invested in Tesla, but I wanted to ask to the investors who are, with these headlines does this make you want to buy more stock as I believe this news is huge for the company and I can see it giving the stock a little rally.

Are they currently set to grow even more soon?

Can someone explain when/if I get shares of a spun-off company?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 02:40 PM PDT

I've never encountered a spin-off closure before. I wake up and see ALV is down 30%, and see this news: https://www.nasdaq.com/article/autoliv-alv-closes-spin-off-of-electronics-segment-veoneer-cm986043.

All I see now is that I'm down 30% with no other information on my brokerage account from the spin-off or new ALV shares acquired because of the spin-off. I'm confused with how all this works, and a little peeved that it appears that I'm now down 30%.

This headline caught my attention: stock buybacks are the only thing keeping the stock market afloat?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 02:35 PM PDT

If that's not a bad sign what is? The corporations are just pumping up their shares. What do others think of this?

    CGX

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 01:08 PM PDT

Is anyone bullish on the short term? Ie. 2-3 months. Revenues are up and looking strong this quarter, long term probably not. Should I sell now or could I see a decent gain on financials?

    Patterns of patterns

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 11:55 AM PDT

Lets say you have a stock, you've done your TA on it and a reversal is confirmed so you buy. The stock sells off shortly after the open, spends most of the day down a couple % beepin n boppin its way all day and then in the last hour and a half swings back up and finishes a couple of % higher than it's open.

Now you notice this similar pattern happens over the course of a few days and think you can clearly buy around late morning for a run up to the close, then sell off just as the bell hits the next morning.

Is there a way we can tell how long a pattern is going to repeat itself so we can keep doing this, so while we "own" the stock, we can make additional money on it without fomo?

    Does technical work for stocks?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 09:51 AM PDT

Or is it mostly fundamental? It's really hard for me to draw trend lines with stocks. Do any of you have success with this and if so, what time frame do you look at to draw support/resistance/trends?

How does Dell acquiring its own tracking stock make Dell go public?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 09:27 AM PDT

Isn't DVMT tracking a division of Dell technologies? And wouldn't a buyout take the tracking stock private instead of taking the acquirer public?

Thoughts on ISRG? (intuitive surgical inc)

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 05:04 PM PDT

This is the company that has produced the Da Vinci surgical system that uses robots to assist surgeons on minimally invasive surgeries. I work in healthcare and see this company as the future of surgical procedures. The stock has made very solid growth and seems to be way ahead of its rival companies. Does anyone else feel that this stock is a good buy?

    Let’s talk MJ Stocks

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 03:26 PM PDT

I have always ignored investing in MJ. I am sure there are people here who have hit a strong pump and dump the past 3-5 years. But with Canada legalization, and states slowly doing the same... is it a time to buy in? Any advice would be great, I have done a good amount of research but would definitely benefit from some opinions and knowledge.

The 3 Most Important Qualities of a Good Stock?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 05:44 PM PDT

Just for fun. Qualitative or quantitative. Stating the obvious completely allowed.

Here, a "good stock" means one recommendable to the run-of-the-mill retail investor with a long-term mindset and about 5/10 risk tolerance.

Is time for MSC Industrial Direct to recover?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 06:47 PM PDT

The share price of MSC Industrial has lagged that of peers such as Grainger (GWW) and Fastenal (FAST), and also that of suppliers such as Kennametal (KMT). The market is wondering whether MSC Industrial's issues are predominantly driven by cyclical factors or increased online competition from Amazon (AMZN), which is expanding into industrial distribution and is altering price transparency and competitive balance.

MSC Industrial saw some long-awaited price leverage, but the organic growth rate seems light compared to its multiyear highs.

    How do you think MSM?

    Summer trading/investing posts see here

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 02:59 PM PDT

Every year a bunch of kids and college students ask the same exact question: Can I make money trading stocks over the summer. The answer is yes, but you specifically won't. A few will get lucky, but you probably won't.

Trading is not like playing Fortnite, your skill doesn't increase at a linear or an exponential pace even if you put more time into trading. The market punishes bad trades by taking your money, and then you can't play any longer. No matter how much time you spend watching the market or putting in practice trades, your real trades will get decimated.

You'll make the mistake of going all in, you'll pick penny stocks or meme stocks, you'll always buy at the top or you'll buy a falling knife just to see your trade lose value everyday afterwards, you'll buy before earnings and lose double digit % points, you'll buy 3x ETFs and get wrecked the day after with a double digit gap, you'll buy dividend paying stocks with unsustainable yields and you'll lose money, lastly you'll buy OTM calls and they'll expire worthless, and you'll never get better.

It takes time & effort to learn so you can be decent at trading, so do this:

    • Practice trading to familiarize yourself with the platform, order types, how to close your position, reverse it, add to it, or even reduce it by half.
    • When trading with real money, trade small, learn a money management system, see r/forex wiki that goes into this, the same concept can be applied to anything
    • Learn by reading, go through the academy links in r/stocks wiki, also buy a book on trading

As for investing, this involves holding shares for longer than a summer.

If you are passionate about the financial markets, then put in the time & effort to learn, and don't expect to make money over the summer for your first time trading
