No business background but I was approached to be 51% owner of a company and have a lot of questions

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 06:03 PM PDT

Basically what's going on is this, a long time family friend was telling my parents about a friend of theirs that was looking to start up a company - he already has a successful pharmaceutical business that's been growing since 2009 - and this person is looking for a minority to own 51% of a new pharmaceutical company he's trying to get off the ground.

The minority here being me, a young Native American woman. Problem is I have absolutely no idea about anything regarding owning, running, or even working for a business in this aspect. Ive been sent a proposal email that vaguely outlines the business plan and I don't know what questions to even ask?

I'm grateful to have an opportunity like this but am starting with zero knowledge. What should I be asking or looking for to make sure I don't get screwed over?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 04:36 AM PDT

the customer is finally able to see value in your product. At times, a customer might not be able to see any value in your product. At that time you need to step-up and show how your product benefits them. You can do this through constant communication and with the help of videos or SlideShare presentations. The key is bridge the chasm between your customers and your team. Automate emails, start a blog to educate your customers, or even come up with product hacks on your YouTube channel.

Should You ever do free work for family?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 04:00 PM PDT

Hey r/smallbusiness. I'm curious how the group feels about this. Recently, an in-law got approached by a group regarding a contract. Knowing that I'm in the industry, he asked for my help, saying he'd "take care of me" for my services. Explained my costs and at the time he was agreeable.

Time goes by, and I realize the work is going to more intensive than a simple sign and stamp. He tries to do part of the negotiations himself and relay, the information, but since he's not knowledgeable about the in's and out's of the contract/industry, the other party is pulling out all the tricks.I explain that I should handle the negotiations alone, but get no response. I send him my invoice for work done already, and give him an alternative. He shuts down, and doesn't want me to help anymore, and that he won't pay.

He calls the next day saying he expected me to do it as a favor comparing it by saying "I don't charge my mom to file her taxes." Then tries to have me go down on price, because that's what he found in his research, and my numbers were wrong. I just cut my loses, and wish him the best of luck.

I'm fine not doing the work, and as frustrating it is, it won't hurt me financially. I'm just curious if you think there is anytime when you should do free work outside of exposure.

    Let me know your thoughts

Advice on new office space.... pre-made office walls that are non-permanent and modular?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 10:39 AM PDT

I'm signing a lease for a new retail and office space. There's a 1,000SF mezzanine over the retail space that we are moving our executive offices to.

I'm looking for advice on building out the space with a conference room (300SF), some closed office space (2x 150SF), and the rest open office space.

The landlord won't let us make any permanent alterations, which is fine because we only have the space for 2 years, and I don't want to spend a bunch of money on a permanent solution we will have to leave behind when we move out of the space.

I've been thinking about buying some prefabricated and/or modular office walls that we can use to build out the space.

Ideally, the offices will be as sound proof as possible.

We also prefer the walls to be moveable so we can try out different layouts.

I like the idea of prefabricated office walls because I'm hoping it's cheaper than a permanent buildout.

Does anyone have recommendations of companies to buy these from... or any other general advice?

New business selling Oversized Baseball Bats.

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 11:02 PM PDT

Here is my business - I'm a recently retired professional baseball player of 10 years. I'm starting a business selling 6' Long baseball bats that are perfectly to scale and staining them like bats. I have an engraver who will then put my logo into the bat and any customization on the barrel. I would like to sell to businesses to advertise their business on or decorative in offices. They are conversation pieces and really catch the eye. Another angle is to sell them as trophies for Little league and then tap into the younger market and have kids get them for their rooms with their name or team on it.

Oversized bats aren't a new idea, but everything I've found is very simple and not customizable at all. I also have friends in baseball that I have plans to do "limited" edition bats that will feature a player and be signed. I live in Scottsdale, AZ where baseball is huge.

    Here are my questions:

    1) i know what my cost is, what's the best way to price the finished product?

    2) What's the best way to approach restaurants, businesses, individuals to buy a bat?

    3) Best way to set up online sales where customers can design their bat online and see what it will look like.

    4) Any other ideas, and don't be afraid to be critical. I'm new to business, but I want to parlay my playing experience and connections to fill a niche in the baseball world and make some money!

Do you guys have a idea where to start and how to generate leads and people interested in those. I would like to sell those B2B.

    Small call centre solution

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 02:13 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I am looking at setting a small call centre for incomming calls for virtual receptionists. These virtual receptionists/agents need to be able to accept calls on behalf of multiple clients for example:

    • Agent A looks after Clients X any Y.
    • A customer of Client X calls, Agent A should be able to immediately identify who is calling and for which Client and then answer accordingly.

Can anyone suggest a solution/point me in the right direction? How do we handle the client call separation? At the moment, the client just forwards their calls to a number however the number of clients is growing and this solution is not scaling at all.

(Just to point out, I have posted a similar post on the Asterisk sub. Apologies for the 'duplication').

    Thanks in advance!

Launch the business first or advertise first?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 01:02 AM PDT

I'm from India and working on something small. I want to know what is more productive. To launch the business first and then advertise or the vice versa? I'm almost done with basic model of my business. Just need some finishing touches here and there.

I plan to sell prints if it matters, what kind of business I'm in.

I’d like some help planning out my next steps.

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 11:36 PM PDT

By cutting out outrageous overheads we were able to simplify the process without sacrificing the quality. To do this we tapped into hot networks and were able to produce spectacular talent and a fractional cost. All in all, we're still growing as a company and are working toward possibly having our own office by the end of the year. However, I'm curious as to in which direction that would be. Will someone help me out? Here's a link to check us out!

Can I incentivize employees to further their education using reimbursement instead of bonus?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 06:58 PM PDT

I have 3 employees in my TX single member LLC who want to finish degrees or get higher degrees. I want them to do this also and am willing to pay part of the costs.

Question is - Can I ask employees to provide evidence of tuition payments and then comp them 25% of that as a reimbursement on payroll? The other option is to comp them using bonus, but a bonus is taxed. This is an actual reimbursement of expenses. I think I am okay doing this but would appreciate opinions.

    Starting a Window Washing Business

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 08:58 AM PDT

We're coming up with some names. My in-laws are going to be running the business and the face of it. They're in their 50s and I'm thinking of going with a post-war vintage branding profile reminiceint of the vintage advertisements for cleaning products we see in old Home and Garden magazines, etc.

We need some help coming up with name ideas and some feedback on our current braintrains would be helpful.

    1. Gleam Team Window Cleaning
    2. Shine & Co.
    3. Oh My Gosh! Window Wash
    4. Premier Window Washing
    5. Brilliance Window Washing
    6. Smudgebusters Window Washing
    7. Alamo Window Washing (we're in Texas)
    8. Williamson Window Washing (their name, also the name of an adjacent county)
    9. Mom and Pop Window Wash
    10. Bluebonnet Window Cleaning

    Tax Software for SBLLC

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 06:22 PM PDT

Hey all, I own an IT Company and it's a single member LLC. I just brought on an employee and am looking to bring on a couple more as-needed. Taxes have always been a bit of a struggle to maintain and I'm learning that software help is crucial.

I'm looking at Quickbooks and was wondering if anyone else has experience with it?

Did you go with QB Self-Employed or Simple Start? With employees, do I have to go with Simple Start?

I've got an EIN and have had a separate bank account for the business for the past couple years. Any tips?

I want to start a furniture store.

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 06:20 PM PDT

When i'm older, I want to open a furniture store, but want to have the basic know-how when the time comes. How do places like Pier 1 Imports and Lovesac have so many customers and make almost a million a year? How do I even get someone to buy something? I'm pretty good with people but I don't know about persuading somebody to drop $1500 on a sofa.

    Hey Guys,

I'm producing a documentary about entrepreneurship and small business. We were lucky enough to interview Andrew Warner from Mixergy, John Lee Dumas from EO Fire, and Pat Flynn to name a few.

We're currently editing and putting everything together. I'm tweaking the landing page and would love to get your thoughts:

Wrote an invoicing platform for my own business, decided others might be able to use it and it's gone slightly viral overnight (100 clients) in our first day!

Don't ever give up on your dreams or ideas, you are going to failure many times and you will never know if you don't try.

The site was posted to a site that lists bargains on products, we offered essentially $35 value for free and it's been a great success, the promotion is still current if you or anyone you know are looking for a simple invoicing and job management platform. www.invoiceowl.com

    S-Corp Distribution Questions

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 12:05 PM PDT

I started an engineering consulting firm four months ago and had some questions on distributions. We filed as an S-Corp. We have reimbursed all starting expenses that we originally payed for with personal credit cards, and have about $35k left over.

First, I am wondering if it would raise any flags with the IRS if I game myself a distribution of $15K or so to pay off the credit card I have been using to survive while not receiving a steady paycheck over the last four months.

Second, I will be starting to give myself a base salary and I obviously want it as low as possible for tax reasons. I would like to start my salary at $40k per year, but am concerned that is too low for an engineer. This salary would be comfortable for business cash flow requirements.

Third, what ratio are you guys/gals looking at for distribution vs salary. I was planning on a $80k salary up to $320k distributions.

    What do you think?

    Books on networking?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 10:57 AM PDT

What kind of books would you recommend to get a better grasp on networking? I'd be excited to learn about methods to optimize the growth and maintenance of a network, e.g. what kind of people and where to meet, how big the network could be before it gets hard to manage, how much and often to invest in the network and by what means, red flags to keep an eye on etc.

As An Employer Would You Be Willing To Give A Raise To An Employee If They Had A Serious Life Change?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 10:26 AM PDT

So as the title states, I recently had a serious life change. My girlfriend and I found out she is expecting and I'm worried my job as assistant manager won't pay the bills. I've worked at a coffee shop for the past 3 years working my way up. I do day to day operations, graphic design, and also marketing. I also do other small things for the businesses my boss owns as well. Currently I make $11/hr plus tips (since I'm still working the floor 40 hours a week). I don't receive any benefits and I'm not allowed to go into overtime. I really love this job but my current pay just won't cut it. I have a great relationship with both my boss and manager but I'm nervous to ask for a raise. Its clear that my manager is grooming me to have the skills to run the shop down the line if that counts for anything. As business owners, how many of you would give a raise to retain an essential employee?
