family members contributed to roth IRA without my knowing, exceeded contribution limits Posted: 05 Jul 2018 06:40 AM PDT I recently opened a Roth IRA account for myself. I had a brief tech support snafu when setting up online access, apparently because my information was already in the system. Unbeknownst to me, my grandparents started an account in my name and have been making contributions for the past 5 years or so, including USD 2000 this past May. Since I made the maximum contribution of USD 5,500 when I "started" the account a few weeks ago, I'm now 2,000 over the maximum yearly contribution. I know I need to correct this--and would obviously like to do so with minimum penalties. My understanding is that I can have the excess amount returned to my bank account with no penalty, so long as I do so by October 15th. Is there anything else I need to do that I'm missing? As long as I correct the error by the deadline, will this complicate filing my taxes in April? More broadly, is there any way to prevent this from happening in the future (other than talking to my grandparents and making sure we communicate better in the future)? [link] [comments] |
First time homebuyer, what should I know? Posted: 05 Jul 2018 06:34 AM PDT I'm single, 31, no kids, and looking to buy a house in December. I make about 65k year and I have 5% of my target $150k saved, but I'm not sure where to go from here. Should I talk to a realtor, an accountant, my bank or a private lender? Is it too soon to start thinking about this or should I have posted a year ago? Any advice is helpful, thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Jul 2018 01:52 PM PDT https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/05/upshot/americans-are-having-fewer-babies-they-told-us-why.html I personally have long been in the not wanting kids camp. When I have friends who tell me having two kids in daycare costs them more than their mortgage I immediately get anxiety at the thought. For those of you that do have kids, aside from just making more money, how did you handle what feels like an expense that would leave most with no disposable income at all? Lower retirement allocations? [link] [comments] |
I got a $20,000 a year raise at work. How should I use it to set myself up for the future? Posted: 05 Jul 2018 03:47 PM PDT I am 25 years old and just got a raise in which I should make about $85,000. Below is my current financial situation outside of my salary. $16,000 in emergency fund. $22,000 in 401k/profit sharing. I contribute 10% and my company contributes 12-18% based on company performance. This year it is project to be 14% $33,000 in debt (student loans + car loan) About $3,000 a month in total expenses between rent, food, car payment, student loan payment, car insurance, cable, utilities, etc. So after my expenses and retirement contributions I have about $1,700 a month left over to do whatever I want with. So, what should I do with it? Invest it, put it in a savings account to save for a house, put it all towards my student and car loans, contribute more to my 401k? Any help is greatly appreciated. $1000 custom order, still hasn't been delivered after 7 months. Hoping to do a chargeback Posted: 05 Jul 2018 09:42 AM PDT I made a $1,000 custom lightsaber order (don't judge lol) in December. The merchant listed on their site a lead time of 12-16 weeks. At 18 weeks still hadn't received the item. When I emailed them, they said there was an issue with their manufacturer but they were working on it. I waited until July (30weeks now) and then emailed them again. They said they are further delaying the sabers because they are starting "generation 2" hilts and are changing all the orders to "gen 2" to facilitate work they are doing with another company. I asked them how long it would take and they were unable to give me an estimate. At this point I requested an order cancellation and refund but they said it was against their policy. They claimed it was a custom order and all estimates were subject to change. This is what their website said: Lead Time: 12-16 Weeks\) ^(\ Lead times are estimates and vary based on availability and order volume. Products are made in batches of similar variants, and may not be produced in the exact order that they were purchased.)* I think I have two arguments to make: 1) taking twice as long as estimated with no end in sight and 2) change of the item without my consent (from gen 1 to gen2) I'm probably going to have to do a credit card chargeback. Anybody have advice on how to proceed? (I did call my cc company and they said as a custom order I can wait longer than 2 months) [link] [comments] |
Should I withdraw from college due to expensive tuition? Posted: 05 Jul 2018 06:01 PM PDT I'm going to a private college in the spring which costs 280k to attend for four years. My parents are going to pay for around 150-180k and I will pay the rest through working and student loans. I now feel it's not worth it as I'm now thinking seriously about my future (when I accepted I was having a severe bipolar episode and hallucinating that I was Jesus Christ). I'm also scared that I will not be able to handle college because I frequently have psychotic episodes where I scream and cry and I also experience psychosis nearly every day. I have tried to commit suicide three times the first being at age 9, second at eleven (leading to brain damage) and third at 14. I almost did it again recently but changed my mind after taking a few pills and told my parents. I'm bipolar and ADHD and my mom is likely BPD and Munchausen's. I'm going to talk over my options with my parents. So far my options are: Go to the expensive school Withdraw, go to community college and transfer to a less expensive but still good school ? I haven't paid anything except enrollment deposit and housing application fee yet. I'm in community college for Economics right now and studying for my Actuarial Exams which is a lucrative and fast growing career. [link] [comments] |
Girlfriend and I set up autopay with Internet Provider (IP) we were never charged. Posted: 05 Jul 2018 06:49 AM PDT Basically my girlfriend and I set up IP autopay through website and phone as to not be bothered with it (disclaimer: I know this is a dumb move but this instance maybe not?). We never really looked into it until recently when our apartment complex began adding in other network providers with better service for a cheaper price. We were going to do some accounting of our bills to see where we needed to cut back and surprise, we have never paid IP though we had their service for a year. So general questions: 1. Do we notify them of this and how do we go about explaining they erred and never charged us?

Sent bill from HVAC company for work I didn't agree to Posted: 05 Jul 2018 02:50 PM PDT I received a bill (around $200) from an HVAC company for work I didn't agree to. I didn't sign any paperwork asking for the work to be performed. On the copy of the invoice they sent it just says "OK" for customer's signature. I was only at the house long enough to let them in, then left. I had 3 different HVAC companies come out to give me a quote for work on my A/C unit which wasn't quite running right. They all said they don't charge for giving estimates. The company that billed me charged for for a service visit (they didn't perform any actual work) and charged a restocking fee for parts when I told them I had selected another company to perform the work. They are being stubborn about removing the charges. How do you believe I should best proceed? [link] [comments] |
What are my chances of obtaining a unsecured loan of $4000 to pay off my credit cards? Posted: 05 Jul 2018 03:17 PM PDT -State: MA -Gross salary: $39k -Education: Bachelors, working in research at a major hospital. -Monthly net:$2260 -Rent:$600 -Credit history duration: ~1 year -Credit score (FICO/Credit karma etc): ~720-731 -BoA CC: $1600 of $2200 used -Discover credit card: $1900 of $2400 used -Checking account with Chase. -Checking account with Ally online. -No savings/money in my account (weekly paycheck goes in paying cards off turn by turn, while I charge everything on them). The biggest issue is I have done cash advances on both of these credit cards. So the interest is around ~22% average of both. These were my first cards, got too excited I guess. I don't really want to open a credit card right now and would rather pay 8% interest (and pay back the money early) than my credit cards massive interest. 1) Which place (Bank/company/credit union) would give probably give me a decent rate or even approve me in the first place? I got an upstart pre qualified offer in my mail which says around 8% interest. 2) When they do a hard pull on credit, how much does the score usually drop? 3) any cons to this? Thanks! Edit: monthly expenses -$600 rent (I take $150 out every weekly paycheck of ~$520) -$200 on restaurants. -$300 on cigarettes last month (quit, today is the 29th day, no more crossed fingers) -$150 on groceries -$180 on food (coffee etc at work, otherwise I generally meal prep -$10 movie pass -$100 utilities [link] [comments] |
I bought a car and the dealership kept my plates and now they can't find them. Posted: 05 Jul 2018 03:58 PM PDT Hey guys Bought a car a month ago and because I bought it in another state the dealership said they would have to keep the plates until they had processed all the paperwork and received my registration and gave me a temp plate until then. Now the problem is it's been one month and the plate expires today and the dealership has pretty much been a ghost the entire month, and I even contacted them two times to see about the paperwork and they said it wasn't ready. Well I called today to get new temps and the receptionist goes "oh, but you papers have been ready since June 15 but you gave us the wrong number" . I made me upset because they have pretty much not tried to communicate with me at all and they did have my phone number because I was called by their customer satisfaction manager a few days after buying the car. Anyways I go and pick up the registration and ask them where the plates are and they say that they don't have the plates and that they had left them on my car but they didn't. A manager said he would look into it but it has been almost 8 hours since they last contacted me and Everytime I call the dealership they say no managers are available and my salesman is not answering his phone. What should I do ? I need my car to get to work but I don't wanna drive with expire plates. [link] [comments] |
19, trying to open own bank account, mom wants access. Posted: 05 Jul 2018 10:20 AM PDT Hi there. I'm trying to open a bank account that I solely own, as I'm 19 and she has access to my current one I made when I was 14. However, she wants access to this one too so she can "put money in it while I'm at college". We are going to have a discussion about it later today, what should I do/say? [link] [comments] |
Is it appropriate to ask for a raise in this case? Posted: 05 Jul 2018 05:13 PM PDT I got a new job a month ago. I applied for a Graphic Designer position but immediately became a Marketing Assistant with additional responsibilities. I asked for 20$ an hour, but agreed to 18$ an hour with a raise to 20$ after 3 month probation. As of last week I also became a part of leasing department (2-person marketing department took over leasing) which comes with additional responsibilties. Would it be appropriate to ask for a bigger raise because of that? Should I ask now even though it's been my first month or should I ask for more than 20$ after my probation is over? Or not at all? EDIT: I didn't mind becoming a Marketing Assistant as I encouraged them to use my various skills. It's just the leasing part that I didn't sign up for which takes almost 1/3 of my time while I'm expected to complete my other duties as well [link] [comments] |
$775 Hilton Grand Vacation Club timeshare charge Posted: 05 Jul 2018 07:52 PM PDT I'm so sorry if this is a small problem in comparison to the other issues posted on this sub. It's just I fought tooth and nail to get my head above water, and $775 is a lot of money right now. It's the difference between staying stuck where I am and possibly starting a new life. My story is this: I signed up for a vacation package from the Hilton Grand Vacations Club. I was charged $225 on my credit card months ago, and was told I would be able to collect $199 back and be given a $200 credit at any of the other Hilton properties on the condition that I complete the timeshare presentation at the designated location of the vacation package [the Elara in Las Vegas, in this case]. When booking the timeshare tour, the agent asked if I was employed. I stated I was self-employed and asked if that was okay, she said yes. I am a delivery girl, part of the gig economy - I work a rotation of Postmates, Grubhub, another courier service, and do other odd jobs on the side. To my knowledge, I am considered a sole proprietorship in the eyes of the government, and I pay estimated taxes 4 times a year. I did not mean to deceive anyone. I would never have signed up if I knew things would happen like this. When I went to the timeshare presentation today, I told the sales rep what I did for a living. Towards the end of our two hours, an hour of which we spent not talking about the Hilton offers (this was done in about 20 minutes), she asked me again about my employment situation, perhaps because I turned down the offer? I explained what I did. She said I was unemployed because I don't have money coming in. I said I was self-employed and that I do not get paid unless I work. We had talked about my family situation beforehand, and I had told her about how I visiting my brother in California for a month (this is what we spent an hour talking about). It was after this hour that she brought up the unemployment situation where I explained to her that I was self-employed. By her definition of not having money coming in - I was unemployed and she told me a rep would come in and have me answer a few survey questions and then I would state my unemployment situation at the end of the survey. I asked her about being charged, and said that marketing would call me later, and I just had to explain my situation and they would make a one time exception. She said Hilton records everything and they would know my situation. I get to my hotel room. I get a call from the Hilton call center. I explained my situation and they said I would be charged $775 because I stated I was unemployed at the end of the presentation, when at first I said I was employed. On the paper that I signed at the end of the presentation, I stated that I have been unemployed since May 2018, as the rep was watching over and told me I had to write the full sentence. I actually did work in June, and work just about every week, but I did have a family issue come up (info that I don't believe is relevant, but my life was threatened, and I decided to go on vacation with family and did not work the last two weeks of June. I had planned to continue doing deliveries, and being to work/ not work/ is one of the benefits of being a courier). I thought the sales rep seemed genuine, but I am aware that I was also a bit emotional and gullible. They call center said my case would be sent to a collections agency. I was about to storm back down to the timeshare lobby, but the doors were locked, and headed back to my room to write this out. Is there anything I can do? [link] [comments] |
Received a response to my debt validation letter, not sure if it actually validates the debt... Posted: 05 Jul 2018 03:59 PM PDT Greetings folks, I used a template I found on this subreddit and sent this in after receiving a letter about a medical debt. The letter was delivered on 4/15/18 via certified mail and priority mail, one signature delivered and the other just tracking information (so they couldn't claim that they didn't receive it)
After sending this, I just received a letter dated 5/26/18 and the envelope's postage is dated 6/26/18 and arrived in my mailbox on 7/1. Response:
So there are a few things that didn't sit well, namely their attempts to get me to sign a form that gives them access to my PHI. Also, it doesn't appear that any of my requests, such as the agreement with the original creditor, have not been fulfilled. Each document in their response has the boilerplate "This is a communication from a debt collector. We are attempting to collect a debt." I would like to defer to /r/personalfinance's experience on responses such as this, I have a hunch they did not validate the debt, and am attempting to get me to respond purely based on their hope that I'm uninformed. I'm Getting Kicked Out Once I Turn 18 Posted: 05 Jul 2018 07:44 PM PDT Long story short, I'm in a toxic and abusive situation with my moher and grandmother and in two months time, I'll be kicked out. The only family I have is in Georgia and I reside in NYC. I have no one in the city to stay with and my biological father is deadbeat. I have my HSE diploma and I have applied to jobs but I'm wondering what other steps I should take! Any advice would be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Is today a good day to start a Roth IRA? How important is timing and the initial amount? Posted: 05 Jul 2018 02:04 PM PDT Hi, PF'ers! Long time lurker here who has learned a lot about savings and retirement from this place. I'm 24 and decided to open a Roth IRA Target Date Fund with Vanguard. My question is whether I should be concerned about when I'm putting everything in? For example, the stock market seems to up and in the green today. Should I wait for a day that stocks dip in order to get more? I already have the full $5500 ready to invest therefore I don't need to make monthly payments. I'm not rich and make 33K a year in retail management before tax however I moved back in with my parents after graduation which has afforded me the opportunity to save. I have seen advice that it only matters to get it invested as soon as possible and that I'd just be timing the market which leads to procrastination and a loss profits but I'd be nice to see what y'all have to say about that. My family isn't much of a help here being that they have a lot of difficulties with handling and saving money, but that's a whole other topic that I won't bore everyone with! I appreciate any advice y'all are willing to give on the topic of Roth IRA's because I know there is still much more to learn. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
How to sell a Diamond Ring ($8,000+ value) Posted: 05 Jul 2018 04:47 PM PDT Hello, I am a survivor of partner violence and trying to make ends meet as a single parent. I currently have the diamond ring from the relationship. I originally purchased the ring and it was returned to me freely before the dispute and violence occurred. The ensuing events have damaged my financial position significantly as I get legal and relocation help. Details of the Ring: I took a lot of time and pride in picking it out and it's a with a lot of pain from the breakdown that I need to sell it. Center stone is 1 carat, round, fairly high quality, visually flawless to naked eye --needs a magnifier to see flaws. I have certification papers, I believe GIA but need to check. Setting is 0.6-0.7 carats of many more diamonds, white gold. Original purchase price was US$8,000 but I believe I got a very good deal and it would likely appraise higher. Timing: I need to dispose of this to make ends meet, ideally within a few months, but could hold out as long as six months if needed. I understand some options are:
My thoughts are to rent some high quality macro camera and try to sell myself - or through listings site, however maybe it's a better use of time to give to a reputable consignment seller and focus on my legal matters and relocation. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Jul 2018 09:35 AM PDT So this morning my ex texted me and told me that her Chase credit card was declined. When she called them, they told her that I was trying to open a credit card under her account. They mentioned my name specifically. I did just apply for the Chase Ink Business card. And years ago when we were together we had a joint Chase checking account and I added her as an authorized user under my Chase Freedom Card. I called Chase and they said my accounts are secure, and they are not sure what happened either. Any ideas?? I don't know which other department to call because I called fraud and they didn't know what to do. Edit: apparently when we were together she also added me as an authorized user on her credit card. This may explain why they told her my name. "[my name], your authorized user, tried to open a credit card under your account" Edit 2: sorry if I didn't make this clear. I removed her as an authorized user a long time ago. I'm not sure if she removed me. [link] [comments] |
$11k in CC Debt - looking for smartest way to consolidate Posted: 05 Jul 2018 07:51 PM PDT I have about $11,000 in credit card debt split between 2 cards. -4k on a Wells Fargo card, 18% APR -7k on a Bank of America card, my 0% APR is expiring in September and will jump to 23% APR With my 0% APR expiring, I am considering a debt consolidation loan. My girlfriend used Upstart and secured a rate lower than her credit cards. My current credit score is 650. I know this will heavily effect the rate I get for a loan. My concern in shopping around for a loan is a hard check on my credit each time, which will surely drag it down lower. Does anyone have any experience or recommendations in my position? I considered opening a new line of credit with a 0% APR offer, but with my credit score I doubt I would be offered a line for the full amount of $11k. [link] [comments] |
Credit Card That Wasn't Mine Added To Apple Account Posted: 05 Jul 2018 12:53 PM PDT Hi, I recently received an email from Apple that my billing details had changed on my account and a second email that a purchase had been made with a credit card. I went to Apple's website and found that both the card had indeed been added and a charge made. Turns out it wasn't a phishing email. I immediately changed the password and deleted the account. I called Apple and spoke to a supervisor. I told him that the card added was not mine. The supervisor told me that from time to time, people target dormant accounts and add stolen credit cards to them to test them. I asked if he could tell me the financial institution that the card belonged to so I could call them and he said no. I am concerned that someone may have opened an credit card in my name, but there is nothing on my credit report as of yet. Has anyone had an experience like this? I find it odd, since my old address was still attached to the account, and the purchase went through. I am in the process of changing all my passwords. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Jul 2018 07:27 PM PDT Hi there! Sorry if this is the wrong place to post, long-time lurker and first time-asker on this subreddit. I recently got into Grad school (yay!) to pursue an MBA, and my employer will pay for up to $10k a year, but only after grades are submitted (any classes where a D or lower is earned are not reimbursed). Recently applied for financial aid, got the option for a 20k federally subsidized loan. It sounded fine to me, but then i saw the breakdown and it said something like 10k for Fall 2018 and 10k for Spring 2019. How does this work? If tuition is only 2100k a class, and I take 2 classes a semester, does the remaining available loan amount roll over to the next semester? Or does it go "poof" and I have to reapply again next school year? In total I'm looking at tuition of about $31,500 for 3 years total. Do I have to take a new loan out every school year? Would it be better to get a loan through a bank? I'm so lost, it's a little sad and frustrating. Would greatly appreciate any and all insight you might have! [link] [comments] |
Etrade Is Forcing Me To Sell My Fractional Shares Posted: 05 Jul 2018 07:25 PM PDT I have a Capital One Investing account which is getting taken over by Etrade. I invested in quite a few fractional stocks and ETFs back when Sharebuilder was still around. Now that the account is being transitioned to Etrade, all my fractional holdings will be sold off. I purchased a good portion of partial stocks back when the economy was still recovering in 2011, and they will be reported on my 1099 for the year. I'd really like to not take the tax hit as I was hoping this would be a long-term account. I would like to bump all my fractional shares to whole shares, but Capital One "cannot accept a trade for a specified number of fractional shares." I need to get this sorted out by August 8. What are my best options to do with this account? I'm thinking of contacting Fidelity and asking them take the account instead and liquidate the investments into mutual funds, but I haven't gotten that far yet. Is there a better idea I'm not thinking of? [link] [comments] |
Should I be saving for grad school (529 plan), retirement, or paying off undergrad loans? Posted: 05 Jul 2018 07:15 PM PDT Howdy! Long time lurker, first time poster all that stuff. I'm currently finishing up my BS (have about 1.5 years left) through my university's online program. I also recently started a new full-time job in my field, making $14.50 an hour. I think this comes out to about $1800 monthly take home after throwing 10% pre tax income into 401k. I plan on graduating December 2019 and then taking a semester off, starting a two year grad program in August of 2020. My question is this: with all the new found flexibility in my budget, where should I be pushing the bulk of my extra resources? I currently have $7500 in federal student loans, and will need to take an additional $15,000 to cover the rest of my undergrad. I will have an instate rate for grad school, so that will probably cost between $20k and $30k. I'm just trying to come up with the split that will put me in the best financial by the time I'm finished my education. I have roughly of $450 that I'm budgeting to divide between student loan payments and a 529 plan, but could use some input. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
