I’m not to sure how to break into the accounting industry?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 09:57 AM PDT

Hello redditors, I am currently entering 3rd year of my undergrad in accounting. I still have no clue what this industry about. After I am done my undergrad I plan to take the cpa exam. I'm not to sure what industry to go into when I first start applying for accounting jobs and what I should do. Can someone tell me all the main differences between industry vs private. What do accountants do.... what is the point of becoming a CPA... compared to having an undergrad in accounting.

What is ONE thing you genuinely like about your career?

Title says it all. If you had to pick at least one thing about your job or career that you like, whether it's about your day to day tasks or overall, what is it?

    Advisory vs Audit qualifications

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 08:52 PM PDT

    Hello all,

I'm about to begin a MAcc program (two years -- non accounting undergrad) this September at a very good public university. We meet with recruiters from all big 4 firms & they heavily recruit from our MAcc program. I currently have 3 FP&A internships under my belt (one of which I'm in right now) and I will begin an accounting internship pretty much at the same time I start my MAcc degree.

My question is, am I qualified to go for advisory internships with B4 right off the bat this fall recruiting season? Is this at all common / would it be a smart move if that's what I would prefer as opposed to audit? I'm slightly worried that shooting for advisory make them not consider me for an audit position. I would do audit for sure, but I would prefer advisory. Any input would be appreciated!

edit: how useful is a CPA in advisory? I'll be taking the CPA exams at the conclusion of the second year of the program.

As the title says. I took REG yesterday and man do I not feel good. The MC was easy but some of the SIMs where hard. Hopefully can get a passing score and not have to retake it 🤞

Using LSU for 150 credit hours in AZ

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 06:57 PM PDT

Has anyone in AZ used LSU distance learning courses to certified in AZ?

I need 4 more upper division accounting courses but am worried 1 or 2 of them may be considered a duplicate of what was taken in my undergrad (ASU). Did anyone have issues with this? I plan on taking cost analysis and control, accounting information systems, not-for-profit and governmental accounting and fraud auditing and forensic accounting.

However I took an "enterprise process analysis and design" course in college and the syllabus is similar to the accounting information systems course at LSU (the book we used in college was even called "accounting information systems"). Has anyone had problems with this course?

    Thank you!

Graduating with MAC, little real-world accounting experience & no "connections"

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 07:45 PM PDT

I graduated with a bachelor's degree in another field several years ago and then began working full time. After deciding to pursue accounting, it made more sense for me to complete a bridge to master's accounting program instead of obtaining a (second) bachelor's degree in accounting. I've maintained a 4.0 GPA in graduate school and I will graduate this year.

The master's program that I'm in can be completed online, which worked out perfectly since I still work full time and live almost 2 hours away from campus. However, completing the program online means that I'm never on campus for any type of recruitment events/networking. My advisors have never mentioned anything about these types of events, or even internships. I'm not sure if this is due to the fact that I'm not a traditional first-time student getting a bachelor's (I'm in my 30's, work full time, have a family) and am taking classes online, or if it's because my university doesn't have these types of events.

I don't think I want to work in public accounting, but also don't want to miss out on opportunities. I guess my question is- since I don't really have any "connections", should I just apply to entry level accounting jobs online? Even though I will have my MAC, but not a lot of accounting experience?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Which career path would be the best for a tax nerd?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 02:38 PM PDT

I know most of you can't relate but I have always enjoyed reading and learning about taxes. From the new HR1 to random IRS pubs. It just has always fascinated me and I just enjoy it. Currently I'm in a tax internship in industry. I have been exposed to a couple of tax things but it honestly feels like a normal accounting internship. I'll be graduating next semester with my bachelor degree and was hoping to do something in tax that is much more interesting. I kind of heard of the different tax avenues in public accounting, but I have no idea what they actually do like SALT, M&A, International tax, federal, etc.

Also would be going for a masters in tax benefit me a lot more? I'm going to graduate with my 150 units and will be CPA eligible. I live in California and I know how competitive it is here, but I'm not sure if it's worth $20k to get it.

    Hey everyone,

I heard it's pretty difficult to break into the Chicago market for public accounting as a staff. I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me out for summer/fall of 2019! I can give you my resume and everything. Please help

Anyone use Robert Half when leaving public?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 05:49 AM PDT

I had a call with one and went over all my details, resume, what I'm looking for, etc. Now he wants to do a video interview with me? None of my other recruiters have done this.

    Is this normal?

Anyone taken the CPA exams while taking the masters and working part time?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 06:01 PM PDT

every firm Ived talked to pushed heavily to get them done before you start full time. they'd obviously they want that lol so I want to consider it.

most likely, I would work at least 24 hours a week maybe 32 and take 4 classes per semester and 2 in the summer hopefully. I do well in my accounting courses so maybe I only need like 300 hours for all 4 (think that's reasonable/conservative?). probably would study light during semesters and then schedule them them during breaks so a lot of cramming in that time.

not sure if that's easier or harder than doing it while working full time, thoughts?

I have to choose wether I would like to interview for an audit internship or tax internship by Monday. What are the pros and cons of each?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 08:59 PM PDT

Should I start filling internship applications now, or should I wait until recruiting season starts?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 09:31 AM PDT

I am paranoid about whether or not I should be filling about applications for internships now for some odd reason. First off, I do not have much time because I work two jobs. Second, I have not met many professionals, and I have a feeling that I can put it off since I want either a summer or spring internship.

    Working During MACC?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 07:33 PM PDT

Hey All! I will be beginning a 1-year (Fall, Spring, Summer) MACC program in August. I wanted to get some input as to what you guys feel is feasible as far as working during my first semester this Fall. Our program incorporates the CPA exams, starting in the Spring, so I know I will not be working then.

The classes I will be taking this semester are:

    • Tax Research & Planning
    • Financial Statement Auditing
    • Advanced Financial Reporting
    • Accounting for Business Combinations, Government, and Not-for-Profits

I am not unfamiliar with time management, as I have worked 30-40 hours/week while going to school full-time during my entire undergraduate studies. I am not familiar, however, with the typical graduate level workload for MACC programs, and whether I will be able to juggle both.

If I am offered a full-time position at the conclusion of my Summer internship, I am considering possibly asking to extend my internship through the end of the year part-time (~25 hours/week) Is this a good idea? Would this come across wrong or reflect poorly at all? It's an audit and tax internship at a small office (~30 people), mid-size international firm.

I'd really appreciate insight anyone could provide, especially if you had a similar experience! (Brand new account, so forgive the lack of post history!)

TL;DR: 12 credit hours of MACC program + 25 hours/week PA internship = feasible, or nah?

    Accounting vs Engineering

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 06:52 PM PDT

Visiting this subreddit makes it pretty apparent that most accountants that work in public accounting aren't very happy (overworked, stressed, etc.). So which profession do you think is more rewarding? I'm sure there plenty of engineers who feel the exact same way.

Is the Fall Recruitment process different in Canada?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 11:18 AM PDT

I will be attending two office tours one with a Big 4 and Mid-size this month in Ontario, Canada. I have read the recruiting guide in the sidebar but I am confused whether recruiting works the same way here. Both positions are in different cities that are a bit far apart (4+ hours). Assuming I build good relationships with both recruiters and staff at both locations over the summer I am wondering how I'll be able to go back and forth between the two cities.

Can you share how your recruitment process was like starting in September, such as how many interviews and when did it start, etc.

Should I go to CC to attain the 30 credits I need to sit for the CPA exam OR should I go to get my Masters?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 10:52 AM PDT

I am currently in a tough position and I am not too sure how to go about it. I will be graduating in Spring of 2019 and I am currently looking into studying for the GMAT Exam.

I will graduate undergrad with approximately 120 credits, which leaves me with 30 extra credits needed to sit for the CPA Exam.

In addition, I will already have debt from undergrad once I graduate.

My question is, would you recommend I take the GMAT, go to graduate school, and attain enough credits to sit for the CPA Exam.

    OR

Should I just attain the 30 credits at a Community College?

What would be the Pros and Cons of doing so?

    Internship at BigFour

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 11:53 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I´ll start my internship at Deloitte in the area Financial Advisory soon (in Europe).

I just wanted to ask for any advice/experience/recommendations/tips you could provide concerning about working at a BigFour or/and Deloitte in general - maybe even specific for an intern.

Just wanted some true, honest feedback ex ante - and what to expect before I start.

Obviously I know somewhat what to expect - but I figured I would give this a shoot!

    Thanks!

    How Soon to Expect Advancement/Raises?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 09:32 AM PDT

    Hello,

I've been working staff at a fortune 500 company since the beginning of the year and I'm earning $45k. Of course I'm not in the job market, but what is the typical expectation when it comes to promotion and raises? I am not a CPA yet, but I do have the education requirements and I'm planning on studying soon. I've received great feedback from my manager and she's always talked about differences between my position and the next one up, and how to get there. She's also told upper-management about how good of a job I'm doing and says I'm quick to catch on. I need more of a challenge so I'm really hoping to take on more soon. Additionally, I'm hoping to earn a little bit more soon so I can purchase a house. Even though the position I'm in now can sometimes be slow, It has given me good experience when it comes to researching, reconciliations, running/modifying queries, and payment application/invoicing. Is it wise to say, in one year, seek something more challenging/higher paying if I'm not promoted at my current position? I'm not quite sure what the standard is. I'm definitely planning on sitting for the CPA to make myself more marketable and valuable.

Question about interstate CPA exam requirements? Please help.

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 04:51 PM PDT

Hello all, pardon my ignorance So I'm a student in New York currently but my family is moving to Texas as we speak. I will be spending my summers in Texas and once I'm done with college my undergrad here I'm planning on doing my masters in Texas and eventually going for CPA. I'll be spending my summers and breaks in Texas so I'm planning on doing internships and such over in Texas during that time.

My question is will the fact that I'm doing my undergrad in NY hinder me somehow In getting Texas CPA accreditation? I'm guessing Texas also requires 150 credit hours before sitting for the exam but I don't want them to tell me "oh you can't take the exam cause your credits are between two different states". If that's the case I'll just finish my education in New York but eventually I'd like to move to Texas.

Which brings forth another question: I can't work in a state where I didn't receive my CPA accreditation...right? Like if I get certified in Texas, I can't move to New York to live with my girlfriend without taking the exam again?
