Update: is my therapist scamming me?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 09:05 PM PDT

    original post

Hey everyone, you were all so incredibly helpful, thought I'd give an update on the situation. So the day after that post, I called my insurance company again, spoke to someone higher up. The gentleman I spoke with told me that because I was mislead, for this one time as a courtesy, as long as my therapist gave him all dates visited/info on rates, they'd reimburse him, and in turn, he could refund me everything but the $20 per session which is what should have been copay (not $50, which he was charging me).

Awesome! So the guy contacted my therapist, my therapist didn't pick up. I also texted my therapist to fill him in on what's going on. His response? "I'm going to pass your info on to my biller and I'll have her contact you so his will be less complicated". Wtf? All he needed to do was report dates seen and rate, and we're good good to go; why was he making this so much more complicated than it needed to be?

I took the call from his biller (she referred to herself as his assistant), who sounded like a complete ditz. All she did was make excuses as for why nothing was going through, which was useless, as I was being led on from the getgo (so if things were never "going through" I should have been alerted ASAP, not several months into sessions). I told her that I wasn't going to deal with this, I'm working directly with insurance and I don't need to be coordinating with her.

The next day, I was urged by my dad to tell him to please reimburse me ASAP. (My dad wanted me to give him a hard line 11 days or I'll take further action, but I didn't go there). His response was that he didn't feel comfortable reimbursing me until he received confirmation that he would be paid by my insurance. But it looks like almost a week later, still, he has not yet picked up the phone to get in touch, simply to tell them dates visited and his rate!

At what point do I take further action?

Will I lose my fully paid deductible if I leave my job but continue through COBRA?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 06:44 PM PDT

I've fully paid my deductible already this year ($5000) but I'm thinking of leaving my job. I've read that I can continue my coverage through COBRA for as long as 18 months. Will I lose my deductible if I leave my job but continue the same plan through COBRA?

    Car at independent mechanic’s home

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 10:27 PM PDT

We have used an independent mobile (auto) mechanic in the past. He used to come to our house, but lately he has preferred to work at his house. We left the car at his house for a few days. He's a self-employed mechanic but I seriously doubt he carries any type of business insurance. If something happened to my vehicle while in his care/possession (say someone steals it or crashed into it while parked at the curb), would my regular insurance cover it, or would he need to have some sort of business insurance? Thanks for any feedback. We're trying to determine if we'll do that again.

Want car totaled, 2 separate claims

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 05:15 PM PDT

    Hey y'all,

Wife rear ended someone in her 2011 taurus (which we have been wanting to get rid of anyways to get something different) and the first quote we got was about $5000 in damage, and kbb/NADA put the car around $7500 in value but the carrier said it's worth $9500 and they won't be totalling it.

Two weeks later, a hail storm rolls through and the car was still at the shop waiting to be worked on. So now, there's $2600 in hail damage along with a supplement from the collision that brought the first claim up to $6500.

So now the combined two claims are almost 100% of the value of the car according to the insurance company, even though the book value was $7500 now it will be even less with the diminished value. We owe about 10k on it and we do have gap insurance so we were hoping we could get the car totaled.

Any thoughts on how to convince the carrier?

Renter's insurance paid for temporary relocation. Now my landlords are paying me too and want their check cashed.

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 02:19 PM PDT

I had to be temporarily relocated due to mold in my apartment. My landlords said they'd pay me back but 2 weeks went by without a word so I filed through renters insurance instead (had to pay in advance and was sitting on my credit card with interest almost due). Insurance paid me. Out of nowhere yesterday, my landlords sent me the reimbursement check. They want it cashed for tracking and tax purposes. Obviously I can't keep both payments. This feels like an awkward/slightly sketchy situation in terms of calling the insurance company back and saying hey, I need to pay you guys back. How do I go about this?

    Door coverage

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 08:12 PM PDT

Hi, just came back from my cousins house where he had one of the big Uh-oh moments. When he was loading his kids to bring them to lessons in his Toyota Rav4, he was in a hurry and forgot to close the rear passenger side door. And then when pulling the car out the door hit the house and now it wont close properly. When he called me I came over and removed the broken hinge and we were able to push the door shut, though it wont shut all the way so the car thinks the door is open. I took him to a couple shops today and it looks like he needs a new door.

He's a young guy on a low income and isnt quite sure what would be the best option for him. He has comprehensive car insurance but has high premiums due to a few other accidents (he wasn't at fault). The cost of the repair will be in the thousands. Is there any advice on what he should do with insurance? If he calls insurance and just ask questions would they automatically make a claim even without his permission? Would that raise the rates? Would it be better for the premiums/rates in the long run if he paid this one out of pocket? He's kind of worried and trying to do what makes best financial sense in the long term. Any help would be appreciated since I have not had to file a claim myself I am not sure what he should do!

Rear-ended by someone without insurance. Adjuster found me at fault.

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 09:49 AM PDT

I was rear-ended by someone who does not have insurance. They were 100% at fault as I was at a complete stop and they just decided to slam the gas. No other vehicles were involved. In order to get the repairs process started I filed through my insurance company. I made it very clear over the phone that the other party was at fault.

After a very long eight week process, my vehicle is still not repaired (the bill is around 4,000$), and I'm shopping around to move insurance companies due to how displeased I am. After speaking with another insurance agent, I've found that my insurance company held me at-fault which is causing my premiums across the board to go way up.

Is this normal? I don't feel that I should have to have an at-fault accident on my record just because someone without insurance hit me. I'm already angry that I have to pay my deductible, but that's not my insurance companies fault. I've been attempting to contact my insurance company for two weeks now, but I've been given the run around and they still have not contacted the service shop.

Update on the not-at-fault totaled Subaru

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 09:09 PM PDT

Well, my last post got downvoted to oblivion, but I thought I'd give an update!

Summary: Some lady drove across the double yellow line on a highway and sideswiped my 1996 Impreza Coupe, which destroyed my car.

They had liability insurance through Shelter, so I've been in contact with their adjuster. He offered me $1.7k, citing prior body damage (which I didn't have) and mismatched tires (all four were new), and a missing door panel.

I sent a receipt for my four new tires, professional photos proving that my car didn't have the previous damage he mentioned, and photos of the "missing" door panel that I had removed earlier in the week for a door lock repair. It's in perfect condition, although it was in my garage and not on the car. I'm surprised he even noticed, given how smashed my door was.

Using your advice, I sent him a list of comp cars that I was able to find. While searching dealers, I was only able to find a few cars 500+ miles away. Each one was offered for $6,000+, although they had fewer miles.

Searching classifieds gave me more options, but the running two door manuals were all selling for $3500+

I sent all of this info yesterday and got this reply yesterday:

Thank you for the information. As we spoke yesterday, Shelter owes you for your vehicle at the time of the loss. I've looked over everything and believe we have presented a fair offer to you for your vehicle. I have mailed out the forms to complete the total loss process. As we discussed yesterday, we will also need your title.

I just don't know what I can do. They didn't acknowledge my proof of condition, my receipts, or my classifieds. This was their first offer, btw.

They also want the rental back tomorrow, even though I haven't even received the offer in the mail yet.

Lots of people in my last post told me to suck it up. Please scan your local classifieds for a manual two door Impreza before you make the judgement that I am asking for an unreasonable amount. Less than 6,000 a year were made from 1994-2001. Enthusiasts have driven the market values way up.

I'd appreciate any advice on where to proceed from here. Thank you!

Confused about who covers for what

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 03:41 PM PDT

Hi, I'm in California and I'm not really familiar with how the coverages and liability works for auto insurance. A few days ago I got rear ended while at a stop light. Both insurance adjusters have agreed that the other person was at fault and both our insurance companies have given estimates for the repair cost. Both have also said to notify them after inspection from a shop in regards to possible further internal damages.

Now my question is, do I get to choose as to which insurance would cover the cost? Or is it automatically the other persons insurance that takes full responsibility?

Another question is regarding a rental. The adjuster for his insurance has asked me in regards to scheduling a rental for when my car would be in the shop if I wanted to. Given that he was found to be at fault, does his insurance cover for rental or would that fall under my insurance? My issue is that I have no rental coverage under my insurance plan and I'm a bit confused about how this works. And if I am eligible for a rental, would they only cover the daily cost and I would need to pay for daily insurance or would it be a full coverage?

What happens at a 50/50 liability, car accident?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 02:33 PM PDT

Got into a car accident, other driver was waiting to merge on the main road. I am going straight, than the other driver hits me. Dmg to my right passenger door, needs to be replaced and wheel alignment needs to be corrected . Other driver dmg to the front left day light and and front left panel. First accident legit no clue what to do, we exchanged info went our way. I went to an auto body shop to get an estimate, they say I should call the cops just in case. I did and they say that the other driver needs to bring their car to the station to write a report. Yeah I know now ALWAYS CALL THE COPS. Since I do not have Collison, my insurance geico isn't doing anything. So I filed claim with the other person allstate. I sent the photos, gave my statements. An adjuster came and estimated 4500 dmg. I got a call from allstate that the other party is saying something different happened at the accident. They say it may go to hearsay. I've looked online about hear say and a lot of ppl got 50/50 liability. Does that mean their insurance will pay only half of the damage and I will have to pay half of his damage?? Also anybody whos been in this situation have any advice on what to do now? Allstate hasn't given the final decision yet.

Before anyone says it now I know always call the cops right then and there. I don't have collision because the car is over 10 years old.

I live in NY if this matters.

    Other driver has liability coverage

Help! Car insurance advice needed ASAP

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 06:18 PM PDT

So we found out that my husband's parents are taking his car off of their insurance policy. In fact they did it last week and were just now finding out. The car was transferred to my name about a month ago but I thought we had more time to get insurance. The problem now is that we just moved to the other side of the country for work. My husband is in our home state and has to drive the car here. However is license is suspended due to Tickets (a mess I know).

If I purchase car insurance for the car since it's in my name, but he gets into an accident while driving here. Will the insurance company still cover the claims or will everything be voided since his license is suspended?

[CA] Car in my name, insured by parents?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 05:38 PM PDT

I'm a California resident who will be attending an out of state grad school but want a new car for when I move back. I'll make payments on the car while in school but want to garage it at my parent's place in CA. Hoping to insure it under their policy. I'm in my mid-20s and have a couple of accidents, one recent, that I suspect will drive my rates through the roof.

Would I be able to have the car in my name but have it on my parents' insurance policy? On rare occasions when I need to drive for school, I'm also planning to buy non-owner's insurance for when I'm out of state and use a rental.

Other suggestions for how to deal with this are welcome.

[TX] Auto Accident Claim - Can I opt out of repair and get a check for the repair costs directly?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 01:24 PM PDT

I live in Texas and the accident happened in Texas - the car in question is fully paid off and owned by me.

Having recently seen the estimate from the body shop that my insurance recommended, it turns out to be near what the car's blue book value is. I am waiting to hear back from my insurance as to whether or not they will declare the car as totaled, but if for some reason they do not, am I able to decline getting the car repaired and get the value of the estimate paid directly to me (so I could put it towards the purchase of a new car)?

Lost job health insurance, but getting married later this year

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 01:15 PM PDT

    29, Male, Brooklyn, NY

I'm a freelancer, and to keep the post short I'm no longer working for the company I used to work which provided me HI. (For past 5 years, which is why I'm not super up to date on how to handle this)

I'm now working for a new company as an independent contractor, which is how they avoid giving employees health insurance, ahhh the freelance life.

However, I get married in September and my fiancee's company provides fantastic insurance.

I'm a very healthy individual with no reoccurring health issues or anything along those lines. So I'm thinking I should get catastrophic insurance to cover the gap. Paying $4-600/month doesn't make sense to me since Ive visited the doctor twice in the past 5 years and have better insurance in my relative near future.

I visited the NY health insurance market and good lord that website is tricky.

This is what I'm looking at: https://nystateofhealth.ny.gov/individual/searchAnonymousPlan/plan/52860?county=Kings&coverageTier=INDIVIDUAL&entityType=INDIVIDUAL&planYear=2018&youPay=

    So some questions.

    1) Does this seem like a good idea? Or is there a better way to go about this.

    2) I get that the deductible is 7,350 before insurance kicks in, but why does every category (from ER to Chemo to Perscription drugs etc. etc.) say 0.00% Coinsurance after deductible for In Network Cost Share.

Do they cover 100% after my deductible?

Seems too good to be true? I have to be reading that wrong.

    3) I don't see how to actually sign up for the health insurance plans? Just seems like I can view only? I know I fall under the special circumstance or whatever but how do I actually sign up?

Trying to understand Health Insurance always makes me feel so frustrated. It has to be confusing on purpose...

[MI] Blue Cross Blue Shield EOB statements

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 08:55 AM PDT

I am 22 years old and currently still on my parents health insurance. I am interested in beginning therapy, which my insurance would cover; however, I don't particularly want my parents knowing if it's avoidable. I've read on other websites that you can ask for the EOB statement to be sent to an address other than the policy holder's. Do I make this request to Blue Cross Blue Shield directly or to the therapy billing office when I pay the copay or to both parties? Additionally, is an EOB the only paper trail that I need to ensure goes to me instead of my parents, or are there other questions I should be asking my insurance to protect my privacy?

[CA] Question regarding a car accident repair

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 04:09 PM PDT

Regarding getting my car fixed by the other persons insurance, can I choose what get's repaired?

Help getting reimbursed for rental car during repair.

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 12:50 PM PDT

Back in February, I got t-boned. I originally called my insurance company to start the claims process, knowing full well that the other party would be found at fault (they were cited by the police at the scene). And sure enough, the other party's insurance accepted fault.

Now, I'm struggling a bit with rental car reimbursement. My insurance put me in a rental car for 30 days (the limit of my policy), but my repair is taking quite a bit of time, and I've had to pay for a rental out of pocket. At first, my insurance gave me the name/contact info of the claims person at the other insurance, and told me to talk to them about the rental car. I finally got someone to tell me I could send them my receipts and they would reimburse.

Then, my insurance's subrogations department reached out about a month ago to see if I had any out of pocket expenses they could help me recover. Do I?! But today, the subrogations agent said they would only forward my receipts to the other party, and she couldn't speak to how much they might reimburse.

    So, my questions:

    1. I'm being reasonable w/ my rental (around $25-$30 per day), but as long as it's not over the policy limit, there shouldn't be any issue with what the other party reimburses?

    2. Am I wrong in thinking my insurance would be a little more helpful in this regard? I know I have only 30 days of rental coverage, and I could see if this claim was my fault, I'd be on my own while my car is being repaired. But the other party accepted fault - shouldn't they reimburse me then go after the other party to get the money back?

Thanks in advance for the comments.

Help! Being charged for insurance I didn't want while in a different state!

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 12:12 PM PDT

Well, now that that's out of the way, here's the story. I moved from FL to OK back in January. When I was prepping for my move I called my insurance carrier and asked them what I needed, will I be covered while in OK. Short answer, No, they do not cover that area at all. Ok, no big deal. A week later I get a notice stating they will no longer be able to insure me after the May cancelation date due to state restrictions. Ok, another phone call, I'm still insured, thats fine, I won't need it by the end of April. I personally moved at the end of January, left my things in storage and my Jeep at a personal friends place until I could move everything up. At the end of March I throw all of my stuff and two Jeeps in the trailer of my bf's semi, we bring it all up and park it in storage in OK. Pull the FL tag just in case. I get my license, we sign paperwork for the property and go back on the road for a few months. I get new insurance in April. I got messages from my old company stating they needed payment or they would cancel. Call them up, tell them I have moved etc, once they here the state I am living in, I'm told there is nothing more I need to do and not to worry about payment. I retagged my Jeep after my birthday. So no now, nothing about me is in Florida. Now it's June, I went to our property after being on the road for months and find mail that they are sending me to collections for non payment for services that had expired and
    What can be done?

Question about possible options concerning Car Insurance

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 11:28 AM PDT

This didn't happen to me personally but I'm asking in place for a friend since they are in a predicament and I'm not sure on their options or what they can do.

Long story short, basically they were with a small car insurance company for a few years and they had their policy on a monthly auto pay with their credit card but when their credit card company changed their credit card, their auto pay stopped since their credit card was no longer valid. Their car insurance company sent them a few letters about these missing payments and waited 21 days ( they are located in California and don't check their mail often enough ) and eventually the car insurance company dropped them from the policy.

Their new car insurance company they are trying to get a policy with found out about this 3 week time frame they were uninsured and doubled their monthly quote because of this ( their original quote was half this amount when they spoke to an agent ). Is there anything they can do? I already tried suggesting they called the old car insurance company and see if they can retroactively pay to get it this insurance policy cancellation off their record but they said they could not. Any suggestions?
