122k subscribers and growing! We are looking for new mods!

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 09:30 AM PDT

I had previously written out this amazing post, but somebody did not like my sense of humor, so I banned them and now Im rewriting it anyway!

A couple of things I want to hit on and get your feedback about:

    1) Welcome new arrivals! It is great to have you join us here at r/Stockmarket, we are a fast growing financial subreddit! Feel free to ask questions about stocks, trading and more!

    2) WE NEED MORE MODS!

This sub has been growing fast, and a few of the older mods are burned out, so it is time to bring in some fresh blood! There are a few requirements to being a mod here, besides the perks like a company car and your own 19yr old personal assistant from Sweden (male or female, tell us your preference. Actually no, we get to choose for you, its funnier that way).

We are looking for mods that are active on this subreddit during market hours. Your duties will include the normal clean up of lazy posts and spam, but also to guide conversations and new traders get the answers they are looking for.

You need to be logged into our discord and will be given access to the mod chat area where you are expect to keep in touch with your fellow mods and be able to chat over voice when needed. The mod area in discord will cover both this subreddit and the live chat, but it is not your duty to monitor live chat.

2.1) As a mod you are also responsible for bringing important breaking news and what even the stock flavor of the day is to the subreddit for discussion. For example, today LULU is +10%, why is that? Is there an opportunity to fade that trade? Lets discuss!

    3) For the love of Elon Musk, we have our own chat room right here https://discord.gg/0Th8ZTRxPUqeAq71

We see a lot of people asking about chat rooms every week. Sometimes the person asking is doing so as a set up so that the persons buddy can come in and advertise their own chatroom.

Many times these chat rooms can be shady and looking to scam you, other times they are just a few friends hanging out. We do not have the time or resources to go investigate these things, so please, no linking discord chat rooms, doing so gets you banned.

The discord linked above is shared with r/investing and has some really great people in there. If you are an active trader and prefer live chat, please visit the above. If you are interested in helping bring content to the live chat and being a mod there, we are also happy to discuss that.

    Whats next?

We are looking to get more active with individuals making podcasts, live Q&A streams and more, stay tuned, and as always, thank you for helping improve this sub!

LULU gaping up +10% and new 52wk highs

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 06:55 AM PDT

Big action on LULU today, performance over the past few months has been amazing and we got a target upgrade from $50 to $150 from Barclays.

Im not long, but Im wondering if this is close to being nicely shortable, any ideas?

    > (Reuters) - Lululemon Athletica Inc's (LULU.O) shares were set to open at a record high on Friday as customers continued to flock to the athletic apparel maker's stores in spite of intense online competition.

Shares of the Canadian company, which popularized "athleisure wear" by turning pricey women's yoga wear into mainstream fashion, were up 7.75 percent at $113.19 in premarket trading.

Lululemon's recent push to renovate stores paid off in the latest reported quarter, with traffic rising in the mid-single digit range.

"We are particularly impressed with Lululemon's store performance given many retailers still cite negative traffic trend," Cowen & Co analyst Oliver Chen said.

Direct-to-consumer revenue, which includes online sales, rose 62 percent in the first quarter, helping the company record a profit of 55 cents per share. Analysts were expecting a profit of 46 cents, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

At least nine brokerages raised their price target on Lululemon's stock, with Barclays being the most bullish.

The brokerage raised its price target by $50 to $150, saying they were "hard-pressed to find anything negative" in first-quarter numbers.

Stock Market Update June 1, 2018

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 07:30 PM PDT

    WMT?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 11:46 AM PDT

Do you guys see the current slump for WMT as something to stay away from or a buying opportunity? I know brink and mortar retail isn't in favor right now, but with the recent flipkart buy and decent books is this stock in that bad of shape?

[US-MARKET] How to get started 101. Brand New Series!

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 01:55 PM PDT

    Disclaimer & Preface:

I am just a normal human in the United States that have some spare money to play around with in the stock market. I am by no means a professional trader. This is going to be a series of learning materials as well as information on the US MARKET ONLY*. If there are any mistakes please messages me and i'll edit in the correct info. Hope this will become a good series for a sticky for beginners. Thank you for your time.

How to get started on trading STOCKS*

In order to start trading stocks, you require a broker. Now since I'm only covering the US (sorry EU/CAD); the main ones are Fidelity, TD Ameritrade, Robin Hood, Vanguard and and E-trade. If the broker you are using are not listed; don't worry. Each broker has their Pros and Cons. I myself have 3 different brokers, so yes you can have more than one. I'm not going to say which one is better as they change, do your due diligence and find the one that works out the best for you. From my personal experience you can not go wrong with TD Ameritrade because they give you free access to ThinkorSwim.

    Whats the catch?

The catch is we have to pay taxes on the gains. There are two main primary payment of tax from buying and* selling stock. Each person pays a different percent of tax depending on what tax bracket you fall under. The first payment is for Capital gains tax which is 100% of your Tax bracket taxes (read this carefully). The second form of payment is for Long Term Gains tax which is a reduced percent of your Tax bracket. To qualify for Long Term Gains, the stock must be held for over 1 year.

There's actually a second CATCH! (do you want to stop now?)

so after reading the text above, your already paying taxes plus fees from trading. Can you believe you're in the negatives? haha well there is more! For those who don't make over the first tax bracket($10,400) you don't have to pay for Capital Gains tax AND you don't have to file taxes! (fun fact: you don't receive an earned income tax credit refund )= )

Sadly for the many of us, we have to pay taxes on gains. Wait you thought that was it? nahhh!!! Because now you made money on buying and selling stocks, you now have to pay TurboTax or HR Block. This will set you back another $50-$180 depending on your needs.

So if you still want to continue to learn how to trade come back monday after hours as I will try to make another part (1 part per trading day) . I am a working man you know =) . * This is my first big post so please excuse my format. I will get better*

    Position Size Calculators?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 10:47 AM PDT

I'm new to this (6 months), and I'm looking for a position size calculator similar to What William Karaman uses in his videos. Can someone recommend one similar, or better? ("oh, it's easy, just..") I'd create my own, but I don't trust my math skills.

    Example ~7:17 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jT6uA_PlCmY

    Thank you :)

    PBR Down 14%, Buying Opportunity?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 09:42 AM PDT

Petroleo Brasileiro is down 14% today due to the market being spooked about the labor strikes. There is a nine-day-old trucking strike going on right now that has investors spooked. Does the sell-off create a buying opportunity?

Here is a fundamental overview: Revenues have been falling, gross margin around 30%, and the ROE has been below 1 for some time. Plus the company needs a lot of capital expenditures to keep up with operations. This need could substantially cut into profits.

Personally, I will be staying on the sidelines for this one. What do you think?

Can you profit from just tracking the Dow Jones?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 03:29 AM PDT

Say i have 25k capital. Dow is currently trading around that mark, do you think i can realistically spend all my time and research in studying the Dow Jones and buying one stock when i expect an imminent rise and potentially selling maybe later that day or a week later if required, and gaining maybe $100 or so per trade?

Basically just to make a bit of profit on the side of my job.

    BKS stock

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 06:56 AM PDT

I've been following this company for awhile - and bought a small lot of their shares when they plunged heavily in Feb 2018.

I know they announced that their financial results are coming Jun 21 yesterday but I can't see what else is causing this uptick in their stock price today. Anyone know anything further?

How does trade tariffs effect the stockmarket?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 01:33 AM PDT

    Hello there!

I've recently started buying stocks and dipping my toe in the Stockmarket. And when I woke up today I read that the US has put up tariffs and in retaliation Canada, Mexico and the EU has put up tariffs aswell.

Does this make the stocks go up in short term but down longterm?

For example when I read about the steel tariffs I decided to google some US steel companies (I live in the EU so I'm not very read up on the US market) and noticed that a company, so aptly named United States Steel Corporation has started going up. Is this something that can be expected?

Study: what happens next to the stock market when breadth reverses down

    Posted: 31 May 2018 11:34 PM PDT

The stock market's breadth on Wednesday was very positive because the stock market rallied, with Up Volume exceeding 85%. The stock market's breadth on Thursday was negative because the stock market fell, with Up Volume below 30%.

In other words, this was a very quick reversal in breadth. Historically, this was a bullish sign for the stock market on a 1 week - 1 month forward basis
