Posted: 31 May 2018 03:58 PM PDT A major customer questioned it while we are in the final stages of a contract award process. I haven't paid attention to our d&b rating in years because nobody ever looks at it. Then, somebody looked and informed me that our financial stress score was low. According to d&b website this means that we are likely to close in 12 months. The rep that i spoke with at d&b tells me that it's poor because we haven't been reporting our financial information to them for years. I asked how to fix it and after a few snarky back and forths she literally told me there was no way for me to fix it other than to pay them for services. She called it an "investment". So I asked her, so you rated my business as poor based on nothing other than the fact I won't pay you for services I don't want? Does this sound wrong to you? A supervisor joined the call. It went south from there. There is something very very wrong here. [link] [comments] |

US Tariffs on aluminium and steel Posted: 31 May 2018 09:14 AM PDT Hi guys, I've just seen on the news that from midnight the US will be imposing a 10% tariff on imported steel and aluminium from the EU. My business sells aluminium to the US as a finished product. Will this affect my business? Any advice will be greatly appreciated! Thanks [link] [comments] |
Getting my supplier to send directly to another business Posted: 01 Jun 2018 03:19 AM PDT I've been chatting with a business in another country to me that mentioned what they are paying for a particular product. I am quite confident that I can get the product cheaper from my own supplier (also from a different country to me), so have been wondering about asking my supplier to directly send a shipment to the other business, and I will keep the profit. Of course, there is a risk that either the supplier will contact them directly to cut me out, or the business will contact the supplier to cut me out. so I'm wondering what my options are here: should I organise a contract with the supplier to agree to whitelabel/dropship the shipment without any of their own details? I don't know how realistic this would be, considering it would be an import and they would need their details all over it for customs. or, is there perhaps a service that takes it and forwards it, so both parties are unaware of the origin/destination? Need help valuating unused passes/gift cards in sale of business (yoga studio business) Posted: 31 May 2018 09:22 PM PDT We are planning to sell our small yoga business as my partner prepares to have our baby in a couple months. It is a small studio, started last September thanks to a good deal on rent from a friend, generating about $1,600 a month in gross revenue. We weren't planning to sell it for any actual cash value since we weren't yet drawing much of an income on it. The plan was to let the lead instructor take it over. However, now she is getting fussy about the cash from unused class passes sold. She believes she should receive the full cash value of unused classes on those sold passes. So in essence we would pay her to have our business. Now that's got us thinking about the value of our client book, which is at about 200 people, and the supplies she would inherit as well (mostly yoga props, some minor office/reception supplies). Are we wrong in thinking she shouldn't be getting full value of these unused class passes? It kind of feels like we are getting screwed here paying that full amount, when both sides were going to benefit by simply changing over the ownership without any cash changing hands. It looks like our options are: - Negotiate with her on the value of those passes vs the value of the client book and the supplies, putting a dollar figure on each and then comparing. - Find someone else to take it over instead. - Keep running it ourselves without near as much energy available. - Shut it down and refund everyone. Need advise on how to open a amazon business account DBA LLC S as a eu RESIDENT. Posted: 31 May 2018 06:40 PM PDT hello im a dual citizen now returned and living in the EU, I continue to work with my LLC from Europe, i informed the IRS about my new address and got an EIN number. i successfully notarised documents to use a US address in NY as a contact point for all my mail, bank letters etc (USPS 1583), i have opened new bank accounts and a line of credit. my business is not related to reseller, online stores or any sort of bulk buying and reselling type of business as i am in the line of work i am involves producing and technical directing of audio visuals for film, tv and radio. So i want to know if anyone here considered opening an amazon business account as i order allot from ebay and amazon to cover parts, accessories for my gear or gear itself such as computers; cameras, lenses, filters microphones, musical instruments or DAW equipment. I recently tried opening an amazon business account as a LLC to use it as a easy way to file for my LLC S taxes but they are asking me for a verification letter lol I have the original LLC documents registered by an attorney on park av NY back in 1999, i have the IRS statement showing my new residence in Europe as the current resident agent, and i have the notarized USPS 1583 authorising a postal service to receive mail in my behalf and these documents contain my current passport-passport card and a drivers license with my current EU resident address., do i have to share all this with them? Posted: 31 May 2018 08:11 PM PDT Hey guys! I'm currently a student who is thinking of selling my handmade desserts! I have had many positive feedbacks from those who have tried it and am confident in my dessert. However, there are some issues that are hindering me from selling them to make money for school are: 1. Not knowing how to market my product? 2. Finding the differentiation between my product and the dozen other home-bake businesses? This idea to start my little home-bake has always been a secret dream of mine. With tuition being a problem as I enter first year university, I am more motivated to turn this dream into reality and I hope with your help, I am able to do so. [link] [comments] |

How important is design to your business? Posted: 31 May 2018 06:29 PM PDT Hi there, I'm a Brand Design Freelancer, but don't worry, I'm not here to annoy you with advertising myself. I figured that essentially I'm trying to market my services to small business owners, so this seems like the right community to do some "research". I'm really interested in the general perception of small business owners in respect to the value of design services to their business. How much do you think does design contribute to the success of your business? How much would you pay for say, a logo design? Do you prefer a quick and convenient process or do you prefer someone taking a few weeks to "get it right"? Where do you go for such services? I'd really appreciate some insight to these questions - I'm essentially trying to understand how you guys think :) [link] [comments] |
Call in and chat about small business? Posted: 31 May 2018 06:18 PM PDT I've realized I have a knack for talking to people about their small business and because of that I need to bounce an idea off you. See, I have a degree in graphic arts, started and sold a small web design company, became a marketing junkie, own a commercial office building for small businesses, and have found myself in far too many discussions about the frustrations small business owners face.. and I love those discussions!! Now I'm trying to figure out what to do with this passion. I considered a small business marketing firm but it seems too limited. I don't want to just create marketing, I want to have candid and honest discussions about what small business owners fear, and what they're frustrated with. I think I can ask questions and provide suggestions that can help (this, of course, can include marketing advice). Do you think people would tune in if I did some sort of live call-in show, maybe on Facebook Live, or YouTube Live or something.. It would be a free call-in show that makes no promises except that I'll listen, ask questions and (hopefully) provide relief and hope. If this isn't too crazy, how do you think I should start? Posted: 31 May 2018 02:03 PM PDT I just got a piece of mail from a private, shady looking payday/ loan company in my area (State: IL). It basically says one of my employees, lets call him John, took out a loan for $500 back in February. John agreed to pay back this loan in installments, and part of that agreement is that if he fails to pay, this company can take his wages directly from us. Now, I don't think this is fraud, but my questions is, what obligation do I have to this company that (A) is not the government and (B) entered into a contract that I am not a part of? Can they come after me if I ignore this? John works part time and makes, maybe a few hundred dollars per week. There is backup included with John's signature that he agrees to these terms. What would you do? Would you talk to John about it? You might be like "meh just pay this company" but garnishing wages through payroll isn't something I want to go about lightly. Thanks for your advice. [link] [comments] |
What Repetitive/Tedious Tasks Do You Deal With On A Regular Basis? Posted: 31 May 2018 01:55 PM PDT I'm doing a summer project in which I find a task that many business owners hate doing, and figure out ways to streamline it and eventually start a business of my own helping these business owners. I'm hoping that you guys would be willing to help me out. So far I've got:

Rent as % of revenues, Tenant and Landlord partnership? Posted: 31 May 2018 01:07 PM PDT Is it common to (are landlord often willing to) have rents be based off of a percentage of revenues? Maybe with monthly floor? I'm in NYC with sky high rents and many empty storefronts. The asking rents for most places seem to require that the tenant is a unicorn pulling in revenues in the top 99th percentile of business ideas. I'm considering putting in lease offers as 10-12% of gross revenues ballpark, with a floor for the landlord. (I want to open a cafe). Does anyone have experiences to share? How receptive are landlords to these partnerships? [link] [comments] |
Ideas on Charging Clients for my Travel? Posted: 31 May 2018 03:42 PM PDT I've recently started to branch out into projects that involve me traveling a fair distance outside of my home market to coordinate projects for my clients, and I have zero experience with how exactly I should go about billing for the added inconvenience of travel. At first it was an hour away...no huge deal, I just added on to my hourly rate I charge for off-facility assistance (I normally work out of my own facility, charging hourly for event-day service. If it's out of my facility, I charge double. Now I'm getting requests for a city 2 hours away, and 4.5 hours away. Flights to the 4.5 hours away city are pricey and involve transfers so I'd rather drive anyway. As far as best practices go, what do any of you guys do? For the city 4.5 hours away we're talking 9 hours on the road and a night in a hotel. For the city 2 hours away I will usually round trip in a day but if the event is late or early I'll stay at a hotel. For further context, I am handling event space rental and charging for additional services besides my base hourly rate, which includes dedicated fees for Various AV services. So there's room for me to pad things if needed but I generally prefer to be transparent in my pricing. [link] [comments] |
Can I get franchisee financial numbers before buying a franchise? Posted: 31 May 2018 03:22 PM PDT I am looking to buy a franchise. I received the FDD from the franchisor. However, in section 19 (financial performance representations) they do not provide any numbers. When I asked the franchisor (actually talked to the owner directly), he told me that they cannot ask franchisees to provide their financial numbers/documents "because it is illegal to do so". However, he told me that if I want I can ask the franchisees myself about it (but I am hesitant to ask them myself). My questions is, is it really illegal for him to ask the franchisees to disclose their financial numbers/documents (like P&L statement, balance sheet, etc.) to me? I just asked an attorney over phone during a brief conversation and he said that is not true, and he thinks this is a red flag. But it was a complimentary brief phone call through RocketLawyer.com, so I want to get another opinion also. The FDD does how financial statements for the franchisor, which is good to have but I was more interested in financial statements from franchisees. Any advice? Please help. It's a big decision for me, so any help will be appreciated. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
(Texas) Looking for legal advice with starting a social media management/marketing company. Posted: 31 May 2018 02:42 PM PDT I didn't purchase a Tai Lopez program but I do think It's possible to consult/manage and market for small businesses near me using social media. Posted: 31 May 2018 02:31 PM PDT I'm trying to start up a bakery business, but I'm having trouble on where I should be getting my ingredients, I'm not very out in the market yet either should I go to local vendors to obtain my ingredients or should I go to bulk suppliers to have them provide me? What is a reasonable price for checkbooks? Posted: 31 May 2018 02:01 PM PDT Hey Everyone. So my bank doesn't provide checks for my business and they say I will have to order them on my own. I've looked around and it seems like they're more than I want to spend. I'm considering direct deposit because I need to pay myself for consulting work and pay myself expenses. How much is a reasonable price for checkbooks? Where do you get yours? I've heard of Office Depot but they still are way more than I want to pay as I am just starting and haven't really launched the part of my business that I plan to generate my main revenue stream. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 May 2018 01:02 PM PDT I'm looking at getting involved with taking over a family small business in next 5-10 years - a small family owned hardware store in a rural area. There's alot to consider, while i've run my own small business the past 15 years, it's online and entirely unrelated to hardware, plumbing and heating, etc. Would love some advice from anyone out there on personal experience, anecdote, books, resources etc. Thanks! Posted: 31 May 2018 12:36 PM PDT Holy shit, this adds up! I just realized I am liable for a good amount of this in my state. In general, consumers blow this off and states seem to not think it worth the hassle of collecting on e.g. small Amazon orders. However, if you're filing an ST-1 and claiming deductions elsewhere, you have a much higher likelihood of having eyes on for this. Since we'll all anon here: for those of you living in a state that has a state sales tax, have you been paying sales tax on materials for your business that you buy out of state? Am I the only one who didn't realize you have to do this? How much of this do you pay? How much time do you spend messing with figuring how much you owe? [link] [comments] |

Anyone switch from Paychex to Gusto? Posted: 31 May 2018 12:07 PM PDT What was the experience like? I've been wanting to do it because I'm just sick of dealing with Paychex sneaking in discount expirations and additional charges all the time. Not to mention I'm the sole employee of my s-corp and Paychex charges over 2x what Gusto does. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
