She had fallen while hiking last month and for the first week she was in severe pain so went to an urgent care. At the urgent care they took xrays and said everything was fine. A week goes on and she is still in severe pain so I booked her an appointment at an orthopedic specialist. Her first appointment she waited 2 hours and got an xray that he looked at for ~1 minute before telling her there was nothing wrong and just to take 'epsom salt baths' for her foot which was pretty bruised. A week later she went for a followup with him and again she waited for 2 hours for him to see her for ~2 minutes and he said everything was looking better and she should be fine to get back to hiking.

For the next week she tried walking bit with me but she was really in pain still and my wife is really fucking tough when it comes to pain tolerance so I got her an appointment at a second specialist. She not only got in right away but the Doctor sat with her for about 20 minutes asking her 100 questions about the incident while she had new xrays taken and when he got the xrays back he found and showed my wife all the fractures in her leg/foot.

So basically my wife ended up walking on a broken leg/foot for 2weeks+ because one doctor completely misdiagnosed her twice because his office seemed to be really busy/overbooked. Is there a way to contact my insurance company or this guys' office and have a valid case for a refund here? Or is this one of those cases that you pay for their opinion regardless of how accurate it is?

[FL] - University has cancelled the last class I need to graduate with no timetable given - told I will not be able to graduate on time.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 11:17 AM PDT

I attend a ~1000 student private, non-profit university in Florida, where I (and 13 other students) are scheduled to graduate on July 1st, 2018. The last course we need to graduate is a medical clinical internship, and there have been rumors over the past 5 months that the university has not been able to place all students, mainly due to poor planning and inaction of the clinical coordinator. There are a group of 4 of us that did not receive internship locations, and we have been told that they "cannot place us at this time" and that faculty "does not know when we will be able to be placed". There are a couple issues that accompany this:

    1. We cannot graduate or apply for our state licenses until we complete the clinical internship.
    2. We have been told that we cannot receive a refund for any courses that we have already paid for over the duration of the program, including the cancelled class.

Essentially, my degree and career is being held hostage, and I'll remain in limbo until the appropriate faculty eventually get around to letting me finish. The student handbook has no policy in place for this event, only mentioning that the university reserves the right to cancel classes based on low enrollment. I have already paid for the entire program, and my student loans are accruing interest every month. I have everything documented, including emails and conversations assuring me that "everything is fine" and "everyone is getting placed", occurring over the last 3 months. The deans and president of the university are refusing to acknowledge that anything wrong has been done by faculty and will not meet with us.

I have paid ~$30k for a degree, and the university cannot give it to me. I feel if the university is not letting me graduate due to fault of the faculty that I deserve every cent back. Is there anything I can do?

Neighbour's cat is destroying my water fountain (Part 2)

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 09:17 AM PDT

Unfortunately the problem I came seeking advice for yesterday has flared up today. For those that don't know what happened please look at my post history or the bottom of this post. My apologies for the trouble.

So the neighbors came over to my house angrily this morning and left a note. I had already gone to work by this time but my surveillance system notified me. The woman who came to the door (cat's guardian) was clearly rather profane and upset. After 10 minutes of waiting and muttering to herself she left a note which I had a friend drop by and pick up on his way to work. It read the following:

"We know you have been spraying out cat with water. If you do not stop we will make sure you are charged with multiple acts of animal cruelty. Why are you making such a big deal out of this situation? We have seen deer on your property and we don't see you making a big fuss then!!! You are needlessly being cruel to our cat by taking the actions you have. Our kids are very upset that you think you have the right to be cruel to our cat just because he is harmlessly wandering and doing his natural business on your property. Your land does not just belong to just you but the nature around you! You have no right to regulate what creature can or cannot come to what you perceive is "your property". Do not think your cruelty will go unpunished??? You are a despicable person."

I want to be very clear I have never tried to intentionally physically harm the cat. I installed sprinklers yesterday to deter the cat from going near my fountain and I'm guessing he caught on to this fact and the neighbors are not happy. I have zero knowledge for what constitutes animal cruelty or if I have done something wrong. Is there anyone here that can possibly give me some direction on what I may have done wrong. Are my neighbors just making this up to make me fearful for installing deterrents for their cat on my property? I would hate to get in trouble over what I perceive to be a rather tame and trivial issue. Thank you for your time.

Update1 (06/01/2018): I am currently watching the neighbors cat sit atop the highest point of my waterfall. I watched the footage back and he seemed unphased by multiple streams of water squirting him as he went from the lower basin to the upper one where the streams can not hit him. I am sure the cat has defecated at the top as an act of revenge. I am going to attempt to adjust the sprinklers when I come back to also hit the top. If that does not work I will proceed to the live trap suggestion unfortunately. Thank you to all of you who took time out of your day to give me information and advice, I truly appreciate it.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Yesterday's Post:
I am not sure if this is appropriate to post here, if not my apologies.

I live in CA and enjoy sitting outside after a long days work. My neighbors cat has been ruining this for me by pooping into my water fountain to such a point that I have to clean my water pump and water every couple days after the cat destroyed my last two pumps. Besides that I cannot stand the terrible odor lingering outside from the cat doing his business. I have talked to my neighbor about it and she gives me some bs response that maybe I shouldn't have my water fountain where it is (on my property). Mind you this is a permanent water fountain structure made out of stone. I have tried a lot of things including concentrated citrus oil, coffee grounds, black pepper, and even predator piss (I am that desperate) to dissuade the cat from visiting my backyard, but nothing has worked. Also I should disclose that the cat is not fond of me and has attacked me unprovoked 5+ (also documented) , so needless to say the cat does not like me. I have surveillance and have archived all relevant footage. I am getting increasingly more frustrated, and I want this siege against me by the damn cat to stop. Is there anything I can do legally speaking? Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Update1 (05/31/2018): I have really appreciated all the advice that people have been suggesting and have plans on implementing a motion detector sprinkler based solution. Though I would like to think that this will fully resolve the issue, in the case it does not, could I have a hired attorney do something about my situation or would it be a waste of time (reimbursement for medical costs for cat attacks and pump repair and replacement costs)? Please note I have tried to deliver these official bills through certified mail twice to no avail.

Update2 (05/31/2018): I have since had motion detector sprinklers installed in my backyard precisely placed in line with my fountain (as suggested by a reddit user down below) . Should this not work I will resort to other methods suggested. I am very appreciative of all the people that took time out of their day to give me advice. I will keep this post updated just in case anyone is interested in followup.

Drunk lady totaled my car, filed a case against her and won. She needs to pay me $7k now, can't get any payments from her.

Drunk lady totaled my car, filed a case against her and won. She needs to pay me $7k now, can't get any payments from her. A lien was filed against her 12 months ago, I didn't get a single payment from her till today.

From my understanding, she is not making any income that she is reporting to the IRS. But she does have a source of income.

Is there anything I can do?

Edit: added location and explained that she does make income, she just doesn't report it to the IRS. Edit 2: Clarifying that neither of us had insurance at that time.

[CA] High School shutting down bathrooms at lunch

    Posted: 31 May 2018 06:16 PM PDT

My old high school was having issues with students vaping in the bathrooms, and the response from administration was to lock down all the bathrooms on campus except 4 (2 men's, 2 women's). This has been going on for about a month. Admin has been lying to parents about the bathrooms being locked down (saying it was only a couple days, that the bathrooms are open now, etc), while students have been complaining of impossible wait times at lunch and disgusting messes in those open bathrooms that go untouched for days. One student I know couldn't find an open bathroom at school while on her period and ruined several articles of clothing. Are there any laws/educational codes against this? It's becoming a serious stressor for my friends & family who still attend this school.

Edit: I've linked a couple of the students who are currently documenting this to this thread to check out the advice. I graduated last year, so there's not a whole lot I can do other than that. Thanks to everyone who put in their 2 cents!

[MA] Ex gf is refusing to vacate the house that I own

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 07:48 AM PDT

So here's the story I bought a house last year and moved in with my girlfriend who did not sign a lease. I have broken up with her and am now in the position of having to force her out of my apartment. About 15 days ago, I served her a 30 day notice to quit, which she has largely ignored, claiming that I said that she could stay there. Furthermore, she has attempted to transfer me rent for June. I have since refunded her money, however she simply transferred it back to me yet again. Obviously it is ludicrous to keep shoving this money back and forth, and the bank has been less than helpful with my requests to have any and all payments from her accounts blocked.

What is the right way to handle this situation knowing that I really can't stop her from putting money in my account?

Additionally, since I served her the 30 day notice in the middle of last month, does that make her required vacate date the middle of June? I just need a bit of clarification there.

Any help is greatly appreciated, this has been a waking nightmare for me the past several weeks.

Landlord said we have to start saving water at night for the next day

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 11:08 AM PDT

We woke up to find our water was shut off today. Our landlord has hired people to do some work in the basement (put in a washer/dryer and pouring concrete). Our water has been shut off several times this month with no warning. This is the complete text exchange between my landlord and I. (we're in Chicago)

Me - "our water is off again. This is the 3rd time this has happened this month with no warning. It is fully within our rights as tenants to at least be warned." Her - "Yes I agree ok I'll let them know hang tight." then, "I think it best everyone take showers at night ok" Me - "We need water to cook and do dishes and drink! We could plan ahead if we're warned." Her - "From now on I've decided you need to do everything at night and leave 3 liters of water out for brushing hygene. Its a good deal. I'm going to install new washers and dryers so its a great deal plus I didn't raise your rest and your paying 100 cheaper. The roof is also going to be bran spanking new with a deck so hold tight."

(yes I realize her spelling is bad) So what do we do here? I do understand that water needs to be shut off to do certain work in the basement. However, it seems like she's holding the improvements she's making to the building over us as leverage to make it ok for her to demand that we start saving water at night without giving us warning as to when the water is going to be off. It's worth noting that our upstairs and downstairs neighbors do have water today. The last time this happened, they forgot to turn our water back on and it was off for the entire day.

    Thanks for reading!

Reggie is my 6 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback/Lab Mix. I rescued him at the Humane Society at only 6 weeks old and he quickly became part of my family. He is the most lovable little puppy you will ever meet. He makes friends with everyone, always full of energy, mischievous, he will steal your treats, loves cuddles and loves his older pit bull sister.

He was stolen from me on Tuesday, May 29th, 2018 by an individual I am currently taking to court for assault.

I am dealing with an abusive (ex) partner, who actually has an order of protection that guards my 2 dogs, as well as myself from this particular individual. He is not stable and legally not supposed to be within a mile radius of me my animals. He has admitted to taking the dog on social media while slandering my name. He has tried to contact me (before OFP was served) in texts saying if I drop the assault charges and take back the Order I will get to see my dog again. So I have actual texts of him admitting he HAS my dog, he just will not share where.

This guy lived with me when I adopted this dog but has been abusive as a partner and as a dog caretaker. He has neglected both of my 2 dogs on several occasions (not taking them out to go potty) and letting their accidents remain on the carpet until I get home which could be up to 8 hours later. He is under the impression because he lived with me and my animals that he is now their father, even though I have proof an records of all the below:

Reggie is registered under the city in my name.
Adoption fee/Ownership paperwork -- all in my name.
Vet trips/bills/vaccinations -- all in my name.
    I have receipts indicating I purchased 100% of this little guy's food/bedding/toys.

I have contacted my local police department and they filed a theft report but I haven't had any kind of update on the whereabouts of my dog or any follow through. I feel like I am just a sitting duck at this point. The next court hearing is June 12th but I feel there has got to be something that can be done before then. This is my first post ever on Reddit and I am hoping someone can guide me as to what steps I should take next in getting my baby back.

Are we allowed to ask a candidate about why they left their job? Or ask their former employer why they left? In CA.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 09:36 AM PDT

We are in CA. We have a candidate who seems like a great fit but her last job only lasted a few months. Her former employer is a few floors above us in the same building, and another manager jokingly asked her if it would be awkward if she ran into them in the building. Her response was "We agreed that I would not say anything bad about them and they would not say anything bad about me". Seemed like a red flag but we're not entirely sure.

We had her take a predictive index test and the man who checks the results called us and said "Whatever you do, don't hire this woman. You will regret it." We have never had him say anything remotely close to this in the past so of course we're worried because she seems like such a great fit and is so sweet.

Are we legally allowed to ask her why she left her last job? Or, are we allowed to call her former employer and ask them? We are really confused because we were going to offer her the job but now we've been thrown through a loop. Just wanted to check if we can legally ask these questions. Thank you!

My Dad has just died and I need advice about getting a foreclosure halted.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 10:46 AM PDT

Hey everyone, the house is located in San Diego county in the city of Oceanside.

Story: My Grandma left a trust with two properties which all went to my Dad, he has just suddenly passed away and I am the now the sole trustee for the trust. I was doing some research only to find out that the home we have in Oceanside is in Foreclosure as of March. I'm trying to get the best plan of action to halt the foreclosure and buy me some time to get the other house in Los Angeles county sold, so can I completely pay off the Oceanside house and have it to keep or rent.

My problem: What the hell do I do? I found out who the lender is and such by purchasing a full report on the home - so that's good. Now I'm trying to figure out how to let them know my Dad has died, I'm taking everything over and they need to stop the foreclosure as everything is getting transfered to me.

Can anyone help me out here with some advice?!?!

MT-My grandfather found out another person was cashing restitution checks that were meant for him.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 12:20 PM PDT

My grandfather sold his drugstore in 2012. In 2005, the store was broken into, through the roof, and the place was ransacked. My grandfather had to pay out of pocket to fix whatever the insurance did not cover. The culprit had court ordered restitution and the checks are being issued by the State. It obviously took a very long time for him to start collecting the money owed him. Yesterday, he stopped by the store and found out that it had been sold again. The new owner gave him a check that had arrived. The payee was listed as the store and then my grandfather's name. My grandfather found out that the previous owner had been cashing the checks. Is what the previous owner did fraud?

[USA, CT] Restaurant I live above is trying to “change their identity”, going from classy cocktail bar into college rager club. It’s so loud I can’t sleep some nights. Anything I can do??

    Posted: 31 May 2018 07:27 PM PDT

So I live above a restaurant that previously made their name by serving pricey custom cocktails. Their clientele was sophisticated and rarely loud.

I'm not sure why, but recently, the owners have begun to experiment with having these ratchet club music nights where they will have DJs come in with their own speakers and play obnoxiously loud music.

The previous tenant to me actually split costs for soundproofing the unit with the bar. But with this new "market" and outside equipment it's loud enough where I can't sleep.

Is there anything I (and other tenants of the building) can do legally? Are there different classifications for businesses and sound levels?

Also can someone explain to me how noise violations work? Can they measure in my place? Or it has to be outside?

    Thanks y'all.

Record label made me sign a contract and is now ignoring me

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 03:55 AM PDT

I sent one of my new tracks to a record label, the owner really liked it and offered to pay me a decent amount so that we would release the track as a collaboration from me and him.

He sent me a contract to sign in April, I singed it, sent it back to him. I then emailed him asking when I will receive the payment. After about 2 weeks of no response I sent him a message on the labels facebook page. He told me his something happened to his email and I wasn't getting any of his emails. He sent me a screenshot to prove it. On the screenshot one of the emails said "payment near the end of may"

3 weeks ago I messaged him again to ask what was happening with the release, his friend replied that the label owner is away on holiday and will be back within 10 days.

Now when I message him or his friend no one is responding, they are completely ignoring me I contacted everyone I know from the label with no response.

What should I do? I have signed the contract with the label to release MY track as a collab with the label owner.

Edit : The friend has just told me the owner was involved in a car accident. Should I ask for proof?

[VA] My accountant messed up BIG TIME and is now avoiding me.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 11:57 AM PDT

My accountant/CPA made two major errors: 1) He entered the wrong bank account information when filing my taxes and I now owe penalties + interest 2) He submitted "full payment" instead of "payment plan" which would have caused me to overdraft (had he entered the correct bank account information)

He is now seemingly directly avoiding me.

I was advised by the good people in r/personalfinance to post here and ask if I sue him in small claims court, would it be only for the penalties + interest or should it also include his fee that I paid him? Could there be more for my troubles? And finally, should I try to go to his office and give him an opportunity to compensate me or should I go straight to filing a claim?

If you want to read the whole story, I've posted in r/personalfinance and cross-posted to r/accounting. Here is the link:

Rent Due Dates and transfer time

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 11:38 AM PDT

In Texas. Another tenant landlord question. We paid rent yesterday through the landlord's online portal, they emailed us asking us to use this, stating it was their preferred method of payment.

Our lease states "tenant will pay the landlord rent such that the landlord receives the monthly rent on or before the first day of each month during the lease."

The landlord is claiming that because the money is not in their account, rent is late. Am I out of luck on this one? In every other rental I've had paying on the first is the expectation so I was caught a bit off guard by this.

Seems a bit wonky that I'm accountable for transfer times of the landlords preferred payment method.

If this is the case I understand it is due to the language of the lease, no complaints or need for a lecture there, just looking for folks who maybe have dealt with this before and can weigh in on the correct interpretation & interaction with any state specific laws.

Edit: Looks like this ones pretty straight forward, thanks everyone!

Also, just looked at the payment confirmation the portal sent me, in it is stated "thank you for your payment of $xxx on 6/1/2018" not sure if it changes anything.

[AUS] Game server refund refusal even if service isn’t working?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 10:53 AM PDT

Hello, First let me provide some context. I purchased a game server so I could play with my friends. After purchasing the server I had multiple issues which the server provider could not fix. After several days of back and fourth I requested a refund. He stated that I could not receive a refund because I used a promotional code which gave me additional product or service which I complied to when accepting the TOS. I am from Australia and according to the accc I can receive a refund if the service is not working and I gave them a chance to fix this. The company hosting the server is located in the USA, the server however is located in Australia so does the company need to comply with the accc? Thank you

Crypto exchanges collect anonymous user funds over years, then lock the funds in the accounts citing identity verification requirements. Is this legal? (USA/CA)

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 10:51 AM PDT

Basically the title. It has happened many times over the years and has just recently happened to the largest crypto exchange, Poloniex. Despite giving misleading information very recently stating that they would NOT do this like the rest, they just did, now ALL unverified accounts are locked regardless of the amount in them with no warning. Is there legal basis for this one way or the other? Is it legal for a place holding money to just change their TOS with no warning to deprive users of their funds? Is there some sort of written request someone could make to verify themselves, take their funds, and then not have their information stored?

[Ohio] Brother wants to give up daughter to foster care

    Posted: 31 May 2018 07:32 PM PDT

My Brother wants to give up his 4 year old daughter to foster care because of his mental health. The Mother died recently from a meth overdose and my brother says he can't take care of their daughter. My husband and I have offered to take her but my brother says he doesn't want to put 'the burden' on us. Is there anything we can do legally to ensure she doesn't go into foster care or with cps? She has been through a lot and I don't think being separated from family will help.

Can a hotel change their rate after I already paid in advance? (Colorado)

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 11:30 AM PDT

I have been staying at an Extended Stay America in Colorado while attending a work training program. I pay and make reservations week to week since it is pretty sketchy and I do not really feel very safe here. Usually I make reservations on the internet and then pay at the front desk at the beginning of the week. Last week I instead extended my stay at the fromt desk and paid for another week. Last night they locked me out of my room with no warning and said that I owed them money because the rate increased. This seems highly illegal. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Are deductions in the benefit of the employer illegal in Michigan?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 08:34 AM PDT

Should I say no and risk getting fired? I think they'd only fire me if I stopped showing up, but who knows.

I make 40 cents over Michigan minimum wage. My employer splits till shortages (cash+credit) between anyone that used the register that was short. I think it was the much less experienced employees' faults. We're also charged for the retail value of mismaid items. They charge us when we receive our pay (cash). We sign something saying we agree that we were paid correctly, but it's not in writing.

If I still receive minimum wage, is this legal? Michigan minimum wage or federal? Can they make me pay deductions over time as long as I don't get paid less than minimum wage?

[NY] Father recently passed away with no will

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 07:10 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

My father passed away a few days ago, and I'm trying to plot out next steps. I've never been able to confirm the existence of a will even though he alluded to one (he never mentioned a lawyer, and in going through his things I never found any hints of one). As such, I'm proceeding ahead as if there isn't one. He was divorced, and I'm his only child so at least that part of this is simple.

I was living with him while I worked/helped take care of him, but he was underwater on the house which I want no part of. From what I can gather the rest of his assets are a couple of bank accounts that are more or less empty; he was a government employee so he had the Federal Employee Retirement System and didn't do a separate 401k to my knowledge. I'm the sole beneficiary on his life insurance policies and his retirement account. There are medical bills and a decent amount of credit card debt, and my name isn't on any of it.

Is a probate attorney necessary? I was planning on notifying the various creditors of his death, but maybe the lawyer would be useful just to handle the ensuing squabble. Never really handled something like this before, so thought I'd get your thoughts on it. Thanks for the insight.
