Why quarterly? Public companies report earnings quarterly; many investors take this as an opportunity to rebalance their portfolios. We highly recommend you do some reading: A list of relevant posts & book recommendations.

You can find stocks on your own by using a scanner like your broker's or Finviz. To help further, here's a list of relevant websites.

If you don't have a broker yet, see our list of brokers or search old posts. If you haven't started investing or trading yet, then setup your paper trading.

If you're new here, read this post first!

First, welcome to /r/stocks and congratulations on taking steps to better your financial future.

Before you make a post asking for advice or basic information, please consider these suggestions:

    1. Take a look through our wiki as a ton of info (or links leading to info) that people normally ask for can already be found there. This includes everything from the basics of what a stock is and how to buy stocks online to how to analyze a company as a potential investment.

    2. Join our chat room where basic questions can be answered instantly without the need to make a new post and wait for responses. With 70 users on during peak times, there is probably someone around to help you, though this is more likely during trading hours (9:30am - 4pm EDT).

    3. Use the search function as many questions you have were probably asked in the past.

After doing the above, we understand you may still have questions and will want help with your personal situation rather than simply reading about other people's situations. However, lately we've been receiving numerous low-quality posts along the lines of: "Hi. I'm new to stocks. How do I start?" Please note these types of posts may now be deleted without warning. With the very large and obvious links all around the subreddit directing users to the wiki, there is no reason anyone should be making these types of posts.

If you wish to make a post asking for guidance through the market/investing/stocks, please add detail about your current financial situation and the specific topics you need assistance with. Some questions that should be considered are: how old are you?, what is your income?, are you in debt?, what is your risk tolerance?, how many years of experience (or not) do you have?, how much capital will you be starting with?, do you have money in savings?, what topics have you read about and what do you still not understand?, are there any companies in particular you wish to invest in?, what kind of learning material are you interested in (e.g. books, articles, videos, websites)?, are you trying to generate an income from the market or just plan for retirement?, etc.

Generic posts do not give anyone insight into your personal situation and thus no meaningful advice can be given to you. As such, these posts will be deleted as they are of low quality and do not contribute to the subreddit.

tl;dr: If you would like people to put time into providing thorough advice for you, you need to put time into providing a thorough insight into your current situation. Generic, bare-bones, and low-effort posts will be removed.

You should also consider flairing your post as "Advice Request" or "Question" once posted so that it stands out to other users. Normally I flair all posts on my own when I can, but you can expedite the process by flairing your own post to make it more noticeable.

Rules I've learned to go by...

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 07:50 AM PDT

    • Don't buy stocks based on reddit or what your buddies are talking about. Do your DD, and trust your judgement based on the facts you've learned.

    • Buy or enter a position when the price is below your valuation. Maybe the market had a bad day or there's garbage news floating around.

    • Don't catch falling knives. This is gambling.

    • Stick to 5-8 positions at one time so you don't go insane tracking them.

    • History does repeat itself. So do businesses, and people. Take that how you will.

    • Hivemind is very really when it comes to the market. There are trends people create. Use that to your advantage, and once in a blue moon, it makes sense to bet against people.

    • Everything is priced in. Always. Time in is always more important than trying to time your entrance because you can't predict volatility.

Elon Musk spent 10 Million of his own money to buy Tesla stock. Short squeeze?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 07:33 PM PDT

Earlier this month it was published that Elon Musk spent 10 million of his on money to buy Tesla shares at market value. With Tesla being the most shorted US stock at the moment my thinking is that this was Musk's attempt at a short squeeze on everyone short selling Tesla at the moment. With Musk holding the largest % (about 22% of Tesla) of Tesla I don't see why he would need to increase his ownership but to help hold Tesla's share price and to place a short squeeze on short sellers. What is everyone else's thoughts?

    Thoughts on Canopy Growth Corp?

I bought it a few months ago and have made a good profit. Should I hold it and wait for the cannabis boom, or sell and reinvest into another marijuana company?

    Question about dividends

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 02:23 PM PDT

So I know that technically on the ex dividend date, the stock is supposed to go down by the amount of the dividend. However in reality I've noticed that it seems pretty easy to get a stock maybe a couple days before the ex div date and sell for little or no profit, but not loss, a day or so after the ex div date. Meaning, I'm holding a stock for 4-5 days or so, and getting the dividend. This means that with the same chunk of money, I could move around to stocks approaching the ex div date and collect quarterly dividends from many companies every quarter. Is this a legitimate strategy or is there something wrong with my thinking?

Surprised there is so little talk about Deutsche Bank

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 02:02 PM PDT

I decided to scroll through this sub to see, what people think about DB and about it's recent moves, as I am about to invest into their shares. But surprisingly there's little to no discussion about a giant bank having shares that are 11$ per share. I'm planning to invest 3-4k into it, I'm just reconsidering when to enter. I'm thinking 2/3 now and 1/3 if it falls to 8$ per share. Are any of you going to trade DB and if so at what levels? If not, why?

Learning options, bought 4 AMD $14 call contracts (exp. 6/1) at $0.08, they cost me $32. Today, the price was in the money at approx. $14.20. I sold the contracts @ $0.25 and got $100 for them. Was this the right choice, or should I have exercised?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 10:30 AM PDT

In the back of my mind, I was thinking "take a profit while you can", but now I'm wondering if exercising would have yielded more profit. Can someone explain the benefits of selling the contracts or exercising the contracts in this situation?

Best way to get notifications about company filings?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 07:05 AM PDT

I want to get notifications about certain companies filing 10-Qs and 10-Ks, but I can't seem to find an easy option. What I currently do is just subscribe to each individual company's IR notifications, but not all of the companies have this feature.

Is there a way to have all of these alerts in one place, and sent to my email when they happen? Thanks.

Is it possible for high volume ETFs to ever track too far off their underlying value?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 02:16 PM PDT

I'm talking about a very high volume ETF such as VXX or XLF or what not. Obviously if I were to put in a high volume market order to but 5 million dollars worth of AAPL that would probably shoot the price up in the moment and have an impact, but would the same thing happen with an ETF since ETFs are actually tracking underlying value and if the price were to start to spike up from a buy order arbitrage/automated trading would step in very fast to sell shares that are in the moment overvalued? I hope I am making some sense, basically TLDR are large market orders as impactful in the price of an ETF as they are for individual stocks?

How can a stock have more shares short than shares outstanding?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 08:04 AM PDT

I'm looking at an ETF and see the following information:

    Shares Short 19,307,000

    Shares Outstanding 7,950,226

How is this possible? How can a stock have more shares shorted than it has outstanding? Thanks.

    Facebook alternatives or not?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 01:57 PM PDT

Does Instagram do what Facebook does? Does it fill the same market need?

I'm trying to figure out what real competition FB has. Where old friends can connect and discourse, etc. Marketplace. Non-anonymous community. Business advertising, etc. This will determine whether I buy FB, sell FB, or buy or sell competitors. Can anyone tell me the stocks to watch out for? Recommendations from people who know more about this space are very much appreciated as well.

They also have a PDUFA approval date of August 7th for their REMOXY drug. Anyone have any input/predictions towards this stock for the next 2-3 months? Or any other helpful information about Durect?

Explain to me how Direxion S&P Bear 3X and similar ETFs work

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 12:08 PM PDT

I get the basic concept that it's an index that tries to match the daily inverse S&P in a 3x leverage. What I'm wondering is 1) what would be a good reason to buy this and similar ETFs; 2) how long are ETFs like this supposed to be held for; 3) what are basic pros/cons of this compared to shorting? Thanks!

Why is the bid so low even though the stock price is much higher?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 07:16 AM PDT

Hi, I was looking at a stock. It was floating between 4.70-4.80 per share. However, I noticed on yahoo finance the bid was 4.56 for the stock. Why was the bid so low? If I bought it at 4.70 and then sold it at 4.80, would I actually be selling it at 4.56 rather than 4.80?

EDIT: Now the bid changed to 4.72 within a matter of moments! Why is this? Am I supposed to sell for profit when the bid goes up, or when the market price goes up?
