We encourage all our visitors to ask those investing related questions they were always too afraid to ask.

The members of /r/investing are here to answer and educate!

NOTE If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or anything similar. There is no single answer to this question, but we will also need A LOT MORE information if we are to give some sort of answer

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive girlfriend? (not really an asset)
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Be aware that these answers are just opinions of Redditors and should be used as a starting point for your research. You should strongly consider seeing a registered financial rep before making any financial decisions!

My student loans have around 4% interest and are at 30,000. Should I even bother with stocks?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 09:02 PM PDT

The only reason I can think of is that I can still have the money in stocks in case of emergencies or to have a down payment on a house. I have 500$ in stocks right now.

In the age of Robinhood, Vanguard, Etrade, etc. do human brokers who make commission on trades exist anymore?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 08:06 PM PDT

With Robinhood you make trades for free. With brokers like Vanguard, Fidelity, Schwab, you can usually trade their own ETFs and mutual funds for free. With companies like Etrade, you generally make trades for a couple of bucks.

Are there human brokers who make commissions based on their clients trades anymore? I just saw Wolf of Wall Street and they were talking about 50% commission on penny stocks or even 1% commission on blue chip stocks. I know the penny stock stuff was scams but are there legit brokers who still make money on marking up stock and selling it to people (broker dealers)?

And as an aside, is there anything I need to make sure of to make sure I'm not being scammed? I've bought investments from Robinhood, Vanguard and Wealthfront at various times. Do I actually need to go through all the statements to make sure everything is on the up and up?

    Titanium Dioxide

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 10:05 PM PDT

Hello everyone. I'm looking into the titanium dioxide industry and there is a website claiming that the industry is growing at a steady rate well into 2023. I am not familiar with this industry and hoping that the someone can suggest me some helpful website/document to read about the industry. What are the characteristics of this industry? I know that titanium dioxide is used in construction so i am thinking the industry will be affected by market cycles but I don't know how significant is this effect.

How do you determine your levels of support and resistance?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 08:44 PM PDT

I've been reading a lot of forum posts and watching YouTube videos on how to know when to get into and get out of a stock. They all mention the level of support and want to get into the stock around the time the price is at that level. Then selling around the level of resistance.

But the thing is that they just seem to throw a line here or a line there and call it the level of support or resistance. Is there a more defined way of doing it? Is it based on the last day of trading? The last week of trading? The last year of trading?

U.S. Expected to Approve Disney’s Buy of Fox Assets

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 10:08 AM PDT

    https://www.wsj.com/articles/justice-department-expected-to-ok-disneys-proposed-purchase-of-fox-assets-1530114027

This was expected, but what caught my attention was this: "As part of the Justice Department approval, Disney agreed to divest Fox's regional sports networks, according to people familiar with the matter."

Would spinning off ESPN and combining it with the Fox regional sports networks allay antitrust regulators concerns? Or was putting the two together the original concern? If Disney could manage to put the two together and spin them off into a separate entity, that could be quite appealing.

Selling covered calls for passive income

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 11:46 AM PDT

I just recently stumbled upon options trading and I'm looking at the possibility of selling covered calls. Specifically I'm looking at companies like Verizon and Ford that don't move much but pay nice dividends and have fairly liquid options. I've ran the numbers and it seems like selling a call slightly out of the money every month or quarter would net a return of 10-12% once you add the 4-5% dividend that these companies pay.

I know selling calls will limit my upside potential but this seems like a very safe way to make 10-12% a year. What am I missing here? Are there any risks I'm not considering?

    Is Shopify a buying opportunity?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 12:45 PM PDT

Shopify (SHOP) is down 6% from its all time highs today on news that about online stores having to pay state sales taxes, regardless of where the seller is located.

The worry is that this will push small retailers (Shopify's customers) out of the market. There is also worry that Facebook will crack down on Shopify customer's ads.

In the long run, long tail E commerce is going to be around. People with products will want to sell online, and will want a branded presence instead of or in addition to listing on Amazon or Ebay.

But is the stock worth buying at this price, or will it be punished by the possibility of a recession?

Fujix Ltd (3600) Japanese Net-Net Stock (Trading Below Liquidation Value) Thoughts?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 05:27 PM PDT

    https://www.investing.com/equities/fujix-ltd-balance-sheet

I recently found a company trading a $3.25B JPY (market cap.) with a NCAV value of $5.26B JPY, giving me a margin of safety of 38%. I understand it is not the best company in the world but still stock has a low debt to equity ratio, not the best earnings but atleast profitable for 3/4 years and a growing cash rich balance sheet. PE ratio of 3.07. I feel like this is a classic Graham type cigar butt stock. I want to know your guys opinions on this stock? Is this buy in your opinion? Do you see anything wrong? These type of stocks, have never been around in the USA in large quantities for awhile. So, that is why I chose to explore Japan.

    Thanks for the help!

    Rollover IRA Allocations

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 08:57 PM PDT

I'm looking at buying the following companies within my new Rollover IRA. There is a little over $11k which I would like to use to get these allocations. I picked these companies due to their large moats within their respective businesses and growing dividend payouts. Last one is an emerging markets fund through Fidelity at an 0.29% fee. Got high hopes for all of these and appreciate any suggestions! Thanks in advance

    V: $1,350 (12%)
