Incorporating and finding a reputable accountant Posted: 05 Jun 2018 07:45 PM PDT Hey all- new to this sub but have been dealing with some frustrating tax situations the past few years. I live in LA, CA and work as a freelance writer. Over the past few years, I've slowly transitioned away from any W2 income to the point where I'm 100% 1099 now and have as of yet not incorporated... and have really been getting raked come tax time. I've largely taught myself to do all the taxes, haven't asked for help, itemized deductions and did everything I knew how to do but was still paying much more because of the self-employment tax. I'm making enough money now (and have more creative film/web/media projects on the horizon) where I want to set up a company that will allow me to loop all these projects under one banner, calling it a small media or content creation company of some kind where I can write off expenses as necessary and neaten up my bookkeeping. Still, I'm wondering where to begin here. I'm a bit intimidated by navigating the S-Corp/C-Corp/LLC paperwork and am not even really sure where to start looking for reputable accountant near me, preferably one who has experience starting/advising these kinds of businesses, who can help me file this paperwork for a reasonable cost. Also wondering what a "reasonable cost" for these services even is. I have a friend who is a CPA who offered to file papers for me as a C-Corp, said he would file them in Delaware for additional tax benefits and would have me listed as a consultant that would allow me to move between writing and writing-adjacent projects relatively freely. He knows more than I do but I feel as though I have little control over that situation. Sorry to unload, have been googling and reading plenty on my own about Trump tax changes for self-employed people, how to start small businesses, etc, but am still lost. Any guidance on how to find a reputable accountant and how to proceed would be much appreciated. Anyone else have a similar situation? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Harassed by Dun and Bradstreet and BE2 Posted: 06 Jun 2018 03:58 AM PDT I have already reported to the police on BE2 and its local debt collecting medium, Dun and Bradstreet. Should I keep ignoring them and refuse to pay the debt. Because BE2 has already scammed me of $309.10 SGD. which I recently reclaimed from them through my local bank. [link] [comments] |
Thanks to you guys... but just one more thing... Posted: 05 Jun 2018 05:28 PM PDT Thanks to you guys on the great Reddit, my business has been formed and is legal.. I'm doing a single-member LLC.. No employees.. but uhhhh.. now to accounting software. So, with all that jazz aside.. everybody says the staple accounting software is Quickbooks, my parents used it when they had their own business.. They also had 5-10 employees.. But TBH I'm finding their small business online software/app to be less intuitive than the self-employed software. I almost feel like I don't need something that complicated for just me. I'll have no employees, just me.. other than maybe just a little help every now and again.. and I'm not doing a lot of vendors. Just recording receipts and expenses on the go, and I'm doing my invoices elsewhere.. Is it okay for me to use self-employed? Or does anyone have any other accounting suggestions for just little ol' me? I'm using Squarespace as my online commerce, so I know I have seamless integration with Xero.. Suggestions you guys? Considering hiring social media intern. Looking for advice. Posted: 05 Jun 2018 08:01 PM PDT Title is pretty explanatory. We hired some more hands-on interns last month but think we could use some help upping our social media game. I'm curious how anyone who has done this in the past set up the format. How many hours/day and days/week did your intern come in? Did they work largely out of the office and on weekends as well? How much freedom did you give them with your social media accounts? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Best app / program for forms? Residential site visits Posted: 05 Jun 2018 06:53 PM PDT I'm trying to see what's the best option for us to avoid missing information. For just about every project we need to take the same information, some information would be dependent on the previous answer. I'm trying out Zoho Forms since we have a few Zoho apps, but I need something a little better than this. Have you guys had good experiences with something out there? [link] [comments] |
How do YOU pursue operational excellence in your service business? Posted: 05 Jun 2018 09:46 PM PDT Hi all, I hope everyone is doing great! There is a lot of great insight in this sub and I'm hoping to learn more from all of you. I'm curious how everyone promotes, manages, and delivers operational excellence in their businesses (particularly local service business). We're hitting some growing pains as we scale. Obviously, this will vary by industry/company but I'm interested to learn any tips and tricks you all may have picked up. How are you managers maintaining quality control in the field? Is it checklist based? How you manage? Who you hire? Clear processes? Looking for points you've found helpful while scaling a service business. Positively, Rob [link] [comments] |
Husband wants to open a coffee shop but wants me to run it. What do you guys think? Posted: 05 Jun 2018 10:57 AM PDT I work as a manager at a bakery and my husband is an accountant. We make a very comfortable wage, especially for our state(Midwest) and have a great savings account. Our house is paid off and we own our cars so our monthly bills are a low low percentage of our net income. This has allowed us to build a big chunk of savings that we don't know what to do with. We throw money into our retirement accounts each month so that's already taken care of but we want something different. That's when my husband suggested a coffee shop and I'm considering it since he did put around 70% of the savings into place so it's only fair to hear his side a little louder than mine. The plan is for him to do the money and inventory while I run the day to day operations. Then we both work on the design, menu, ect. While I run day to day, he would be at work so we still have his income. The problem is, none of us have coffee shop experience. He loves coffee and makes a lot of different kinds with different devices and beans but he's never worked in one before and neither have I. Any advice? [link] [comments] |
Being accused of purposely slowing down computers when we are not. Posted: 05 Jun 2018 08:35 PM PDT I have a managed services company and as part of it we offer a free consultation and audit. We've recently encountered a client who is accusing us of purposely slowing down all their computers so that we would have to come back and charge her. (Obviously we would never do this) She said we were trying to extort her for money. "Everything is slow, I know the gig you're up to". Now us being a professional company we politely denied all claims despite her aggressive and insulting demeanor. This is what we did while we were onsite: 1.) Ran a network audit and security tool 2.) Ran a disk defragmentation on all PCs 3.) adjusted windows performance settings to better performance I've never encountered this situation and I'm unsure how to respond, we are going onsite tomorrow to "undo what we did" as listed above. We are an established company and would have no purpose slowing down computers to get business, we've been managing networks for years, both small business and Fortune 500 companies. We have only lost 3 clients for reasons beyond our control and have a 100% satisfaction rating. Us being accused of purposely slowing down a 3 user network to make is absurd. If anyone has encountered a similar issue I would love to get some advice. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Jun 2018 08:29 PM PDT I worked for a chimney sweeping company for about a year and during the off season I cleaned dryer vents. I was paid 16% of the job and by boss got the rest minus whatever percentage angies list took if it was booked through that service. I'm currently employed for a small business owner, managing his amazon business and I'm tired of doing it. Today I had a thought that I could operate a dryer vent cleaning service and started doing some numbers. [link] [comments] |
Dealing with a semi-responsive client Posted: 05 Jun 2018 11:25 PM PDT I landed my largest account ever two weeks ago. They wanted a fairly large project done by the end of June. I quoted them a number of hours, they were happy, yada yada yada, I do a bunch of the ground work, but now they're not getting me the information I need to actually do the project. They're happily responding to my e-mails, I've had multiple conference calls with them, and each time they promise they'll get it to me very soon... and they don't. I send call recap e-mails mentioning what I need, I send reminder e-mails, I mention that I might miss the deadline without it, and still, nothing. What else can I do? [link] [comments] |
Part time ecommerce business owners, please share your experience Posted: 05 Jun 2018 07:37 PM PDT Hello all, I'm currently working full time but I'm looking to set up a side gig for myself (part-time ecommerce). Initially, I was interested in dropshipping because I don't have a lot of capital and I'm living in a share house so it's very difficult to manage inventory. However after some reading, I've realised that it's very competitive in dropshipping because you will sell the same product as anyone else and the margin is extremely low. So I thought of building a store/brand with products that actually solve people's problem rather than just dropshipping the trending products and hope for the best. The thing with this is buying from Alibaba requires MOQ and therefore you will need to have capital and a place to store stock and fulfill your orders. Has anyone started a side ecommerce part time business while working full time? What is your story? What product do you sell? What are your challenges, especially when it's coming to capital and storage, and how did you deal with it? How much capital did you put in at the start? I know that to work for yourself, it's gonna take a tremendous amount of effort. I wouldn't mind working 8 hours in the office and another 6-8 at home for myself, I'm just stuck at the capital/storage space. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Jun 2018 05:37 PM PDT Just curious as to what services everyone is using/for what type of business. I am starting a small consulting business and am looking over Publishing Platforms to make a website but I don't want to select something just to find out I can't take payments. Do you use something through a platform? If so, which platform? I'd prefer to avoid just Paypal as the only payment method, I feel like it's unprofessional for the target market I'm going for. Anyone have any experience with Alzo or seed.co? Posted: 05 Jun 2018 09:08 PM PDT Im checking out these online banks and it looks pretty good. I only need a business account for my LLC I made for some free lance work I do. Its nothing major. I probably won't make more than $10k this year thru the LLC. With that being said, I really dont need much except for an account to deposit checks in. So Azlo and Seed.co seem like a good fit. Does anyone have amy experience with these? Any other insights and tips are appreciated! Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 05 Jun 2018 06:33 PM PDT If so, how much would something like that be worth? Answers would be provided by someone with extensive experience ranking sites using white hat methods. It'd be an easy way to learn SEO over time, keep your agency in check, or quickly check if whoever is trying to sell you "SEO" is trying to scam you. [link] [comments] |
Hiring a Filipino sales call center Posted: 05 Jun 2018 11:55 AM PDT Does anyone have experience with using call centers for sales. It seems like a great way to cheaply reach out to many people. Nobody wants to hear an Indian accent, but im hoping Filipino will be tolerable. [link] [comments] |
Shipping prices are killing me. Posted: 05 Jun 2018 08:02 AM PDT So I was looking into selling a product I make and was rounding up cost to determine how much it would cost to produce. It came out to around $3.50 in materials. My plan was to sell it for 16, I really don't think it will sell for more then that, I could try at $20 but I doubt it would work. Anyway all was fine and I decided to look at shipping, For a 1/2 pound shipment from Florida to Nebraska was going to cost $14, is this normal? Am I looking at it right? Do I need to look at special business shipping? With those rates I really don't understand how anyone is turning a profit. Am I fucking up in calculating it or am I just fucked? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Jun 2018 02:24 PM PDT I own a small woodworking business and am tired of General Contractors taking up to a year to pay. We do awesome work, everyone is happy, yet I don't get paid for months! We get the same excuse from these GC's: "Our client didn't pay us so we can't pay you yet" I know this is BS because my client is the GC I am subcontracted with, not the GC's client! I would like to add a payment term to my contract but need help wording it properly, something to the nature of: 50% Deposit required with the remaining 50% balance due within 30 days of installation (Net30) regardless of payment or non-payment from GC's own cliental Can anyone help translate this in a correct manner? Considerations for raising hourly prices? Posted: 05 Jun 2018 01:20 PM PDT I work for myself and am paid by contract on an hourly basis. I have a few major customers that send me a lot of work. My hourly rate has been the same for the past 4.5 years and I'm thinking it's time to increase my rate. I'm not in a particularly competitive field and my current prices are comparable to the others that fill my niche. cost of living indicators are showing about 5%. Can I go higher than that? 10%? Is there any kind of norm regarding raising prices that I could learn about? Last year I also acquired a third certification that makes me more valuable per se. I started my business to pursue my career dream (so far it's working well!!) but I'm not necessarily business minded or educated. Thanks for any feedback! ETA: any suggestion on the wording I use to inform of the rate increase? Email is the norm for administrative changes/info [link] [comments] |
Credit Card Question How to protect against Fraud and chargebacks? Posted: 05 Jun 2018 01:15 PM PDT Long story short we setup square on our ecommerce site a while back and didnt think to much of it because our typically purchase amounts are around $50-100 and only consisted of about 5% of our orders. But we've recently started selling more expensive items and we just received a purchase for $1000. Almost immediately after we got an email for square saying: "Thank you for using Square. We noticed you process online payments with Square.... Please keep in mind that you are responsible for any disputes or fraudulent payments taken on your account." Because we mostly take paypal and have seller protection on pretty much everything, this is very alarming. I called square and I asked how we can make sure a payment is legit. They said, "you can't and if it's not legit you'll be liable". (i immediately stopped taking square, idk if this is standard, but they dont make up enough of our sales to deal with that!) So, now I'm basically trying to decide how to proceed. This order looks a bit suspicious. I reached out and asked the customer for proof of card and photoid. they sent a picture of a CC (all but last digits covered) and passport pic. So I felt better about sending them order, but we are short stock on 1 item so I let them know I would refund the 1 item and process the rest. They immediately emailed back and said "dont refund, i'll pick a different item" which if I wasn't suspicious already it would be fine. But I am suspicious at this point, so... So now I'm trying to decide whether I should cancel the order or if my fear is justified. Obviously, the $1000 is something I don't want to lose, but if it is bogus, that's even worst. Advice? Best way to secure a large loan for a small business Posted: 05 Jun 2018 01:05 PM PDT Hello r/smallbusiness. I have a series of questions. I will do my best to be descriptive and brief. I run a small media company with my business partner. We have been wanting to put on a concert with some well known artists in order to begin making profit off the company. Our issue now is securing a loan. Anywhere between 35,000 and 50,000 USD. Some information, we are both in our early 20's. I have a 710 credit score, He has a 660. We do not have any assets. We have been officially in business as of last December. What is the best chance for us securing a loan like this? We're not sure a bank will approve us, What is the best way to attain a private loan if that's the only feasible option? I kindly ask for any help/advice. Thank you [link] [comments] |
