The whole purpose of the grace period make sure I don't go uncovered for the rest of the month after turning 26, because it's typical for policies to not start until the first of the following month. My employer's HR department, however, tells me it doesn't matter. I'm still "covered" til a month after my birthday, and they don't start their policies til the first of the following month when I am "without coverage." This leaves me uninsured for two weeks.

I am having a tonsillectomy & adenoidectomy in the beginning of July, and there's a 5% bleed risk post-surgery. I cannot run a 5% risk of needing emergency surgery without insurance. That would be a financial disaster.

If I call my company's HR department back, and tell them my coverage terminates on my birthday (that is what the official notice sent says), then do they have any right, or way to know that the 31-day grace period exists?

Got low speed t-boned and USAA is not claiming fault.

    Posted: 06 Jun 2018 10:17 PM PDT

I stopped at a stop sign and proceeded and the the person to my right hit me in the passenger door. She said she got to the stop sign first and started moving before I did.

This is the intersection, I was heading south on 28th, and she was heading east on A st. There is no possible way for her to have started first and hit me, unless I had sped threw the intersection at over 30mph.

I called the police but they said they don't respond to property damage calls, and state farm said they wont help me because I didn't have collision coverage.

What do I do beside take her to court? Can I appeal the decision to USAA?

How Car insurance claim works with prior damage ?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2018 01:40 AM PDT

I had prior damage to my car from backing up into a pole years ago and paint has faded on car. Last night my car got heavy hail damage I want to file a claim so what will be repaired? , just the hail damage or any issues with car like faded paint and loose bumper the car getting backed into a pole , just confused how the estimate works because why would insurance pay for fixing damage unrelated to the hail damage and also why would a repair shop give you a car still damaged like half passing the work ?

How does insurance handle mold claims on vehicles?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2018 09:58 AM PDT

Hello, I just shipped a 2 year old Honda CR-V (with leather seats) from overseas back to the US and when it arrived, the shipper said the inside is covered with mold. I purchased full insurance on the shipment of the vehicle so it will be covered but what I need to know is how bad of a problem is this?

Is this something that can be cleaned out by a vehicle mold removal specialist, or am I looking at thousands of dollars in damages and the vehicle could be totaled?

    Any info would be appreciated!

    Insurance coverage/appraisal for collectible collection?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2018 09:26 PM PDT

I'm updating my homeowners insurance and want to make sure my large (non-coin) collectible collection is covered appropriately. The collection is quite extensive and the estimated value (using the website I use to track the collection) is significantly higher than most examples I've seen in searching for answers online.

I want to make sure that my collection is as completely covered for theft/fire/water damage/zombies/whatever as possible. Many items have been out of production for 40+ years, so are virtually irreplaceable at this point. Many items are in new/sealed condition, but the current collectible value is much higher than the original retail price 40+ years ago.

    • I currently have the majority of the collection tracked online, with quantities listed along with notes on most items.

    • I have not had the collection professionally appraised. Where would one start to look for someone that could appraise a semi-niche collection like this?

    • I have been told that the collection would be covered under the personal property portion of my homeowners insurance, but the collection is currently worth a sizeable percentage of the home's appraised value

Thanks for any advice on how to go about insuring my collection properly.

[RI] Claim question regarding renter's with an additional computer coverage

    Posted: 06 Jun 2018 09:26 PM PDT

So a couple months ago my car was burglarized and the thief made off with a camera bag which included my laptop. Lucky for me, my Renter's policy covered my car... kind of.

My policy covered up to $5,400 of personal belongings, but I ALSO carry an additional Computer Coverage that maxes out at $3k, the description on their site states -

"Homeowners and renters policies cover damage from events like fire, lightning, windstorm, theft and vandalism. With additional computer coverage, you're covered if your computer or tablet is damaged by a drop or a spill."

In talking through an online portal with my adjuster, she claimed -

"Your policy maxes out at $5400. I am not able to pay anything above your max. If the computer was the only thing missing, your computer endorsement pays up to 3k for replacement. Since your policy limits are on the lower side at $5400, that amount is the maximum you can recover no matter what was lost. ft your computer was your only loss, you could recover up to 3k for it."

They paid out the $5,400, but that really only covered my camera gear and part of the money to replace my laptop. I read my renter's policy more closely and it states this -

"1. If, at the time of loss: a. there is trip transit coverage in force, or b. there is coverage provided under our Personal Computer Endorsement then this policy will apply only when that coverage has been exhausted"

So wouldn't that mean that my renter's coverage should kick in AFTER my Personal Computer Endorsement of $3k has been paid out? Essentially it sounds like she's telling me "well since more than JUST your laptop was stolen it doesn't count."

Any insight or advice is greatly appreciated. I sent them another message asking where that was outlined and provided the above quoted line and am waiting to hear back now.

!!HELP!! BCBS of Michigan told my Orthopedic doc that stem cell therapy for my torn meniscus is investigational!!!

    Posted: 06 Jun 2018 09:24 PM PDT

Without giving away too much HIPPA info I was hoping someone with an insurance background could help me. I'm a 36 yo working a physically demanding job. LSS blue Cross will only cover my surgery but my doctor recommends I also receive stem cell injections. I can't afford them out of pocket and I'm on my feet and moving 8 miles for 10+ hours 4 days a week. How can I fight this bullshit. I don't want to end up crippled or having to get a total knee replacement 20 years down the line. Thanks in advance for any help.

New driver, question about a parking lot collision in Ontario

    Posted: 06 Jun 2018 08:16 PM PDT

Hey so I'm a new driver, live in Brampton Ontario. I had a minor collision in a train station parking lot.

I was driving about 15-20 km/h looking for a spot and this girl backs into my rear door. I didn't see her at all and her bumper is pretty messed up. I honestly didn't see her backing up at all, and the fact that she hit my rear door is kind of proof that she backed into me as I was passing her. Anyways, the damages aren't bad; in fact the police said its non-reportable because the damages look under 2000. I read that in my situation it's 100% her fault, but when I talked to the police they said that the insurance company will say its 50/50 since the collision happened on private property.

Honestly I don't wanna go through insurance because its such a minor incident, but I have to because she was stubborn and claims that its completely my fault for not seeing that she was backing out so she actually already called her insurance.

Extra fact, I've read that Ontario is a no fault province meaning that it does not matter who is found at fault your insurance company will handle your claim and pay out for damages and injuries to you. The other person's insurance company will do the same. Someone will still be determined to be negligent in the accident.

So that's my situation, and I just have a couple questions regarding it.

1, will it actually be considered 50/50? Like, if the insurance company ends up telling me its 50/50, what can I do? Because according to section 16.4 here, its definitely her fault.

2, will my insurance rate go up? As I've said I'm a new driver and under 25 so this worries me immensely.

    Help is appreciated.

Apologies if this is the wrong sub for this, but yea my main concerns are about insurance.

The other auto insurance company is trying to get out of paying by citing a technicality even though they admit fault and the person that hit me got a citation for failure to yield.

    Posted: 06 Jun 2018 06:57 AM PDT

A car coming in opposite direction turned left in front of me, causing me to hit the back of his truck. I had right of way and he was supposed to yield. Cop gave him a citation for failing to yield. I have a dashcam video too. No injuries.

After multiple calls, the other person's agent said that his person was at 100% fault. BUT, in the dashcam video, he sees a ladder in his person's truck, and now wonders if he was using his truck for work purpose, which other agent states is not what he is covered for and would invalidate his insurance coverage. So as of now, other guy's insurance is not paying for repairs. So in the meantime, my car is not fixed, but driveable.

One suggestion given to me was to fix under my insurance (which I have to pay deductible), and my insurance agent would go after the guy. But what if the guy doesn't have the money or refuses to pay? What recourse is there for the other guy? I'm so irritated that this person could walk away without any consequences.

Will my agent really go after this guy? Will i take a hit on my insurance premium for this claim if I put on my insurance?

    Other related information:

    • My car is a Tesla, so although only the front is damaged, much of the electronics isn't working (e.g. Autopilot). I am estimating that repairs could be $10K.
    • This happened in Florida

What is the insurance I need called and how do I find it?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2018 09:27 AM PDT

I am recently unemployed and thus lost health coverage. I'm working some freelance gigs but I'm traveling around the country for that and so I need health insurance that doesn't have a network or has a Nationwide network. I tried the marketplace but all of the available ones are local networks. I'm just looking for some guidance. I don't like not having Health insurance with the work I do. Any advice or feedback is welcome.

[Canada/Alberta] My new vehicle (bought new 2 months ago) was rear-ended, resulting in a total loss. Need advice on getting most out of insurance

    Posted: 06 Jun 2018 06:50 PM PDT

My vehicle, 2 month old with 2600 Km on it, was rear ended (and then rammed by that impact into the car in front of me) when I was stopped for a red light. The car in the back was found 100% at fault in the accident. No personal injury (that I am aware of), but the car was officially found to be a total loss by the collision center.

I am going through my insurance company. I had liability and collision coverage. My insurance told me that they will go after insurance of the motorist behind me and I will not need to pay deductible. My question is regarding what happens next.

My understanding is that the insurance company will pay me out the value of my vehicle. But how is that value calculated and how is it related to what I paid for the vehicle? For the vehicle, I have paid/invested the following:

    1. Price of the vehicle itself, paid to the dealership.
    2. Extended warranty, paid to the dealership.
    3. Sales tax, paid on the above,
    4. Under-coating and 3 M protection, paid to a separate business.

Which of the above will I be able to demand from the insurance company?

Finally, is there any advice you can give me?

    Thank you!

Looking to find life insurance for parents, don't know where to start

    Posted: 06 Jun 2018 05:31 PM PDT

My mother wants to open a life insurance policy for herself and my father, but she doesn't know how to begin the process. They would be financing it themselves, however I want to help her through the application process as they are ESL and sometimes need help with going through forms and such

Unfortunately, I'm a little bit in over my head. I don't have experience with insurance myself aside from applying for health insurance online. Where would I start? Just some pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated

Some questions regarding preventative checkup/physicals: What's covered, tricky billing, etc.

    Posted: 06 Jun 2018 11:17 AM PDT

    (cross-post to /r/healthinsurance)

As a 30 year old male, I have not seen a Doctor in many years. My current insurance: Blue cross blue shield (like all plans, I believe) covers a visit per year for preventative measures.

I have come across numerous horror stories of people receiving massive bills in the mail, weeks after going in for a preventative checkup, which is supposed to be totally covered by their insurance plan. Typically this appears to be due to how the visit was billed with codes. Specifically, they were billed for a code which is not covered in preventative care, or their bloodwork was sent to an out-of-network lab, etc.

Because of this, is there a way I can prepare myself ahead of time to know what codes / procedures fall into the 'preventative care' umbrella? Additionally, how is this typically discussed with the doctor?

As an aside, I have exercise-induced asthma and will like to get a new inhaler prescription during this visit. Is there the potential that bringing this up may totally void my preventative care visit and I will end up with a huge bill? If so, I may be better off seeing an Urgent Care center to get a new inhaler prescription? In my view, getting an inhaler prescription 'prevents' me from certain health problems in the future...though I am guessing the billing system does not see it that way.

Progressive Repair Guarantee for former customers

    Posted: 06 Jun 2018 04:12 PM PDT

I own a 2013 Ford F-150, in 2014 I had a minor fender-bender and ended up having the front bumper replaced. At the time I had Progressive for my auto insurance. They took care of everything, I just dropped the truck off at a Progressive repair center and they took care of it all. My front bumper is now flaking off and bubbling in parts and rust is showing on the metal beneath. I now have USAA and can't seem to find any paperwork for the repairs by Progressive. Do you think Progressive will honor their work guarantee?

Home Wind Mitigation Inspection in Florida

    Posted: 06 Jun 2018 03:35 PM PDT

Our home had roof damage from Hurricane Irma last fall. We finally were able to get our roof replaced.

I'm wondering if it would be beneficial to have a new wind mitigation inspection done on our home. The previous roof was three tab shingles that were 18 years old. Our new roof is architectural shingles.

My insurance agent/broker said he's unsure if we will get a higher discount because we have a hip roof and that is already giving us a significant discount.

Any thoughts? Is it worth the $90 gamble for a new inspection?

Car stolen last night and car keys can't be found in my apartment. Need your advice!

    Posted: 06 Jun 2018 08:11 AM PDT

Last night I parked my car at about 9PM for the night. When I went to drive to work this morning around 9AM, my car was not there. I cannot find my keys this morning. A) I heard the sound of my door opening at about 2AM last night. There is chance someone snagged them from my counter top. B) I was carrying groceries and could have dropped them on the way into my apartment. I have full insurance coverage of my vehicle. In either of these instances, could I be denied the value of my car in a total loss claim? Thanks in advanced!

Question regarding insurance of a dormitory

    Posted: 06 Jun 2018 01:59 PM PDT

I have accidentally caused a fire alarm to go off without causing actual fire or damage to anything. The reason why this has happened is because of incosistenices in hot plates they have here at the dormitory which are old. I used the same settings as i would in my old room and i recently moved into the new one. It caused olive oil to smoke. What i was cooking was not burned and i have a picture of it to prove that. Now because i used the same settings and the old devices have incosistencies i have the right to request the dormitory to pay fireservice fees beccause of false alarm. Will their insurance cover it? They have full-policy that covers costs in case of fire or accident due to faulty device. This is basically a faulty device indirectly causing a fire alarm to go off. I want to know before i go and request it.

Moving soon - when do I change auto insurance?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2018 01:56 PM PDT

I am from Michigan, which has the highest insurance rates basically anywhere. I'm currently on my grandfather's policy since we both own the car I drive. I am certainly looking to change my policy when I move to Wisconsin - is there any suggestions on when I should do this? Seems like it would be smart to do so sooner since Michigan has the reputation for high rates. Should I call a rep at the insurance company I have and say that I'm moving to see if that would change the rate once I do move? Or should I exclusively be looking at new policies with different insurance companies?
