Fiancé will cause my rate to skyrocket. Insurance

Fiancé will cause my rate to skyrocket.

    Posted: 03 Jun 2018 05:34 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

Couple of quick questions. I just purchased a vehicle and obviously want to add my fiancé to the insurance (she will be using it to get the kids around and get groceries, etc.) My original quote from Allstate for myself was around $510 for 6 months but when I wanted to add her they stated she's 25 (inexperienced) and had an at fault accident last year. This would cause the monthly rate to be $430, which is out of the question. Now I'm reconsidering adding her even though she will definitely be driving the vehicle. I have not shopped around yet but plan to do so this week. But how risky would it be to not add her at all? Are there ways to mitigate the costs while still adding her?

Pertinent information: She currently has her own vehicle which is insured with Geico at a rate of $490 for 6 months (her rate was raised marginally after the accident).

Edit: I'll list the vehicles to make it easier - Corolla: her car, title in her name, insured in her name with me added. As of right now I mainly use this car for work for the gas mileage. Acadia: My car, title in my name, decent insurance rate if only I'm covered but god awful rate if she's added. This would be used for family trips and for her to drive the kids around etc. while I'm at work.

Construction behind our home is now causing flooding in our backyard. What steps should I take?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2018 12:12 PM PDT

A few years ago, the property behind me was bought by a developer and construction on new homes began. The land was once relatively flat, but they tore it up and built it up. We have never had flooding until this. Now, the house directly behind us is under construction, and the pooling of water in the back yard has become worse. I believe the construction is solely responsible, as we have not done anything in the yard that would cause this. And I believe it could be shown (how I'm not sure) that it is due to the construction and building up of the land. What can I do? Any advice would be very much appreciated. I am located in Maryland, U.S. Thank you for your time.

Does CDW (collision Damage Waiver) cover all the charges even in case the vehicle is totaled.

    Posted: 03 Jun 2018 06:06 PM PDT

I recently had rented a car and was in an accident . The car seemed to be totalled but fortunately I had taken the cdw (collision damage waiver) from the renter. Wanted to know if in this case I would have to pay out any amount or the entire cost would be taken care by the rental agancy.

Got into my first collision the other day and I'm unsure how to proceed.

    Posted: 03 Jun 2018 10:15 PM PDT

So I my first collision the other day. Young driver about 2 years into having a license. I made a right turn into a residential street and once I was going down the street an old Toyota was driving out of their apartment alley/driveway onto the street and I hit the front left portion of her car while she was about half way out. I'm not sure she's at fault though she made a claim since the insurance company made a call. Thing is the car is insured by my mother and I was told i was never put on the insurance plan as drive of the car. What steps should I take to make this easier/the least expensive it can be? I'm in California if that matters. Thanks!

Got rear ended and he wants to pay the auto body shop directly

    Posted: 03 Jun 2018 08:19 PM PDT

So I got rear ended last week during rush hour right before entering the freeway- we were stopped and I guess he was following too closely and bumped into me- there is paint damage and paint transfer from the extent of what I can see. I've gotten 3 estimates and the guy is asking to go with the cheaper estimate, which I'm fine with. He asked me to call the auto body shop to set up an appointment and ask for them to call him to get his credit card information.

This all seems reasonable to me but I'm wondering what kind of extra precautions I should be taking in case he gives a fake credit card number or ends up fleeing the country?? Lol like should I have the money in hand prior to going into the auto body instead based on the quote and then ask him for more if it ends up costing more?

He all around seems like a very fair and decent guy so I am not too concerned about his intent to not pay but do feel like I should have a backup plan if I were to actually take it into the shop and things go haywire. I understand that the best way to prevent that will be to go through insurance l, but we have already agreed to dealing with it outside and my gut feeling is saying to ask for him to venmo me the money first.

Divorce and bundled insurance car and renters

    Posted: 03 Jun 2018 07:50 PM PDT

When my husband and I got married, I found out he lapsed in his car insurance for several months, so I put him on my insurance and then signed us up for renters insurance as well.

    Through progressive.

It's one of those bundle deals and we pay in full for both every 6 months. Out renters insurance ends in 3 weeks which is the exact time I am leaving the home to move away (divorce). I want the insurance to expire and I will call them to not renew. My soon to be ex says he wants me to call them to 'transfer' it to his name.

But, I can't, right? If it's all under my name with the bundled car insurance (which doesn't expire till august), they can't just move that singular part of the policy over, correct?

I would rather take him off completely of everything because he has had 3 incidents with his car in the past year (I've had none) and I keep waiting for some large thing to really screw me over.

If I take him off now, do I get a credit for his portion of the insurance?

Settlement After a Car Accident [VA]

    Posted: 03 Jun 2018 03:47 PM PDT

I was rear ended and also pushed into the vehicle in front of me.The driver and insurance accepted responsibility.

I suffered some whiplash and they offered some money for my pain and suffering, missed work and reimbursement for medical expenses. Though for now it seems OK, I am worried about how long this could last and that it may need physical therapy down the road potentially.

They are sending me a check and some papers to sign. They also mentioned that injury settlements can remain open for up to 2 years.

Thankfully this is the first serious accident I've been in but that also means I am not completely certain of how this works so I have a few questions.

Do I have to sign the papers or is a verbal acknowledgement over the phone enough to bind me to the agreement?

They mentioned that the case stays open for 2 years, however, I am going to assume that's only in absence of a settled payment, correct? If I accept the money and it turns out later on that the whiplash is something more severe it's on me?

Additionally the vehicle is more than likely totaled and I am counting on them low balling us. Any advice as to how we could negotiate that or where we could look to give a better and realistic understanding of what we should be ask for?

I've looked up pricing for our vehicle but they give you different numbers (how much it would cost to purchase your vehicle from a seller, how much you'd get from a dealer, etc.). What number should I be looking at? Does what dealers are selling your vehicle for come into effect at all?

    Appreciate your help!

My car is totaled and I don't know what will happen next (TX)

    Posted: 03 Jun 2018 04:56 PM PDT

My car was flipped on the roof and the other car also had damage. Mine is completely totaled, and I also received a citation. Does this mean that the entire incident will be deemed my fault in the eyes of insurance?

I gave my statement to the officers about 15 mins after the crash and was still shaken up and I forgot bits and pieces. When I went to go file a claim with my insurance I remembered everything that happened. Is there a way to edit the police report or fight the ticket?

Need advice on insurance fitting into my new single life budget.

    Posted: 03 Jun 2018 04:25 PM PDT

Insurance coverage has me tipping over the edge both mentally and my budget. I believe in insurance and both want to get the best deal and pay for piece of mind.

$270 a month through Esurance is my quote. I need to get off the ex's plan soon, committed to July 15th at latest. '15 Toyota Tacoma financed. Should I get a new car with saving money on insurance being priority one?

Of course there are other variables with that. This is difficult to afford, ( one ticket and one accident ) I'm exploring a number of places and that is lowest. Save the General... haven't researched that fully yet.

There are 3 other claims that are his showing up, has anyone had luck with removing them through MVR/clue?

Camper- paid for, do I need to insur it? Should I and what should I look for in that regard?

I have nationwide pet insurance I also need to change over $66 per month. I have a quote at $33 out there.

Renters is stateauto at $37, pretty sure I can save a ton on that but needed something fast as I already moved out.

Side note: I've been lurking on a few places before settling on r/insurance as its most relevant and pressing. However this does encompass a few other budget items.

Is there a place where I can get full on budget review and advice? Welcome suggestions on other subs I can place this. Thank you in advance!

Recently in a Car accident. Need to understand Liability and how my insurance would work

    Posted: 03 Jun 2018 05:46 PM PDT

I was in a car accident recently. We were driving a dark narrow hilly road when I lost control of the car on a turn and ended up hitting the side. The turn was a steep uphill and the car rolled down a small cliff where it fortunately stopped against a tree. It could have been way way worse. 4 out of 5 of us were fine but one friend ended up breaking her arms. We had to call emergency services and she was ambulanced to a hospital nearby where she was provided the initial medical treatmeant and procedure (xray and pain meds basicly) and kept for couple of hours before she was taken to a different hostpital where they kept her in Emergency care for almost 24 hours before performing a surgury whenin they placed a metal rod and screws to align her bone. She was dischaged couple of hours post the surgery and have been recovering well ever since. It was quite a bit of an experience to go through it all and those couple of days were very tough. Now that all that is over I need to think about the medical bills and if we have sufficient insurance within us to cover it all. It is making me anxious and I am here in the hope of finding some insight regarding the matter. Here are few facts about me and the insurance cover I have I live in the United States. Minnesota I am not sure how much the medical bill would be for the entire ordeal (ambulance, admittance in the hospital plus surgery) I have a auto insurance with 50K medical liability' My friend has an auto insurance with 20K personal injury Protection My friend has the "underinsured motorist" insurance of 100K.

Wanted to know what kind of medical bill amount should I be expecting and what coverage can be provided by my insurance company without a fuss. Me and my friend have the same auto insurer. Any comment/references in the context would be very helpful. Thank you

Best way to navigate a speeding ticket influencing premiums on next renewal period?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2018 01:15 PM PDT

In March 2017 I received a speeding ticket. The premium went up $50 a month 6 months later. That renewal period is 7 months away now and the ticket will be off my record in 8. Is there anything I can do to navigate around this?

Is it possible to cancel insurance and add back on after the ticket drops from record?

The second part of my question is that 2 days ago I received another speeding ticket... ya I know. I am 20 years old and still under parents policy. I don't mind paying the extra premiums as they wont be in effect until next renewal, but if the other one can drop is it safe to say there will be little change on premiums?

What would be the best way to make sure that premium stays priced for only one ticket?

    TIA for all decent answers.

The house I was renting a room in temporarily was robbed, I need help understanding renters insurance coverage.

    Posted: 03 Jun 2018 08:25 AM PDT

So I've had a renters insurance for almost a year now, I just graduated college last month and temporarily moved most of my things into a house in a new city. I'd only been there two weeks and this past Friday as I got home from work I saw the house was broken into. I called the police and filed a police report, I'm missing a ~$1,000 laptop, some Nintendo Switch games and a charging cord. I'm waiting until Monday to speak with my agent, but reading through my policy I'm having a hard time understanding whether or not this room was covered because I hadn't yet updated my address with the insurance company. My regular deductible is $250. Any advice or insight would be appreciated.

My uncle says his insurance doesn't cover anyone under 25. What does this mean?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2018 11:40 AM PDT

My fiance and I borrowed a car from my uncle because the motor in our van blew up. A few days later, my uncle tells us that we can't drive his car because his insurance doesn't cover anyone under 25 and we are only 20 and 22. Now we have no transportation and have to figure out another way to get around. Why would he tell us about the insurance several days after we've had his car? What does the under 25 mean?

SR 22 Non owner Washington DC

    Posted: 03 Jun 2018 07:39 AM PDT

Hello r/ Insurance! First time poster so I hope my question is ok. I am looking for SR 22 Insurance in Washington DC in order to get my DL again. So far I have not had much luck finding a policy, I have received 1 quote from The General and they wanted $350 a month. I've contacted a dozen other companies and none of them did non owner. So I guess Im looking for some advice as to some other companies that I can get quotes from. Thanks for any advice !

Edit: if its worth knowing my DL was suspended for failure to pay a ticket and not due to a DUI etc

Why does the finance company expect this check? They don’t pay my insurance every month. I feel very strongly that this Kansas hail damage needs to be my much needed pitfall of dollars.

    Posted: 03 Jun 2018 06:04 AM PDT

My (cars) finance company and myself received a check (for $1,800) for hail damages to said vehicle from Geico insurance. The finance company (out of Florida) is telling me (KS resident) that I must endorse the check and send to them along with my invoice and to also have Geico call them. This is madness to me. First of all I am not their secretary or personal assistant to the best of my knowledge and secondly I was informed by a ex-insurance agent that the money should go to myself and I am not required to get the damages repaired? And if I'm not entitled to the money, why is the finance company? They aren't paying for the insurance. They get money from me every month and don't help with the insurance at all.

Pain and suffering advice for a collision - I have no idea where to begin

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 10:42 PM PDT

Thank you so much in advance! Also, apologies in advance for how painfully long this is.

I was recently involved in a collision and this is my first time dealing with auto insurances, but I feel like I've been having the most frustrating experience. I'm going to be discussing pain and suffering soon and want to make sure I can advocate for myself and not be taken advantage of.

The collision was between my car and another vehicle. The police issued the other driver a citation that basically stated their actions caused them to hit my vehicle. I immediately notified my insurance as well as the other drivers insurance and told them this information hoping it would speed up the process. The driver's insurance has been dragging their feet ever since.

They made no progress on the claim for over 20 days. I ended up having to get a copy of the police report myself and send it to the driver's insurance in an attempt to get the ball rolling. Eventually, they accepted liability nearly a month after the accident. During that time, my life has been massively inconvenienced.

My car sustained moderate damage. The front bumper was completely torn off, the headlights were shattered, and there was damage to the fender and smaller things like the air filter being torn off, etc. The driver's insurance company deemed my car drive-able. However, in my state it is illegal to drive or even park on the street if your car is missing the front bumper. So, I could not use my car for the entire month the insurance company was in limbo.

I don't have any family here to help and the public transportation is lacking, so this was a huge deal. I'm currently a full-time nursing student, I work part-time, and I have clinical rotations at the hospital every week. For nearly a month, I had to rely on my roommate to give me a ride to all of these places including other places like the grocery store, post office, and doctor appointments that were a result of the accident. When I explained this to the insurance company and told them I would need a rental car, they told me to take Ubers to all of these places until liability was accepted. I'm on a college budget, so this was definitely not an option.

My lower back was sprained in the accident and I've been experiencing sciatica, extreme soreness/stiffness, muscle spasms, inability to bend or lift. The biggest problem is that I'm a nursing student and need my back - this obviously impacts my education as I can't fully participate (i.e. lift patients). I'm about to graduate, so I'm also concerned this could impact my career. I can't go into my first job with a back issue because I need to be fully functioning. If I injure it more at work and can't provide patient care – I don't have a job anymore.

I really have no idea where to begin with the pain and suffering. I know pain and suffering isn't quantifiable, but I need help negotiating it. I'm sure the insurance company will offer a small amount – but I hope to get some insight on what is an appropriate amount for me to negotiate for so I feel more prepared going into this!

Help - My Car Insurance Cost is Through the Roof!

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 07:25 PM PDT

Here's a little background on me before I explain the situation:

    • 2016 - I had perfect credit - no derogatories, perfect payment history / $200k salary +20 year solid work history
    • 2017 - Credit is toast - I got cancer and had a catastrophic house flood, lost all savings, four revolving credit accounts nearing $40k in collections/charge-off and one auto repo during the summer. Nothing I could do about it.
    • I'm working again, $110k annual salary, FICO score is low
    • No auto accidents on my record / no auto claims on my side (my wife wrecked one of our cars in 2016 but she was on the policy and they told me it was on "her" record), while I have one speeding ticket 20 miles/hr over limit fall of 2017
    • While sick, I got rid of all vehicles and dropped insurance for six months. I am now divorced, so I am the only licensed driver in my household.

I just financed a new Chevrolet baseline passenger car today, and called a major auto insurer while at the dealership to start the insurance coverage - they said I would be paying just over **** $2,700 **** for SIX MONTHS of full coverage with a $500 deductible. This is with minimum state liability, comprehensive and no riders/extras. I was shocked - it was ridiculous, but I was stuck and had no choice other than to back-out of the purchase.

I was paying $250 a month for a $1 million umbrella plus max liability and $0 deductible on two brand new luxury cars in 2017. I don't understand what is going on. I can only attribute this terrible monthly cost to my bad credit and gap in coverage, but I want to do everything I can to get this lowered as soon as possible - it's terrible, and I would appreciate any suggestions from anyone who has personally experienced this themselves or who has info on why this is happening.
