Designing a Website for your Business Tutorial [Part 1]

    Posted: 04 Jun 2018 07:28 PM PDT

This tutorial is cross-posted from r/OrderedOperations and can be found here. Subscribe for access to the full tutorial as it is released.

This week I'll be doing a tutorial on the basics of web design for your business or any website that you'd like to promote. This tutorial will cover the basic HTML and CSS you'll need to keep your business up and running. For Part 1 I'll be going into the basics of how to prepare in order to have a successful business later on.

Picking a domain name - Needless to say, many people get stuck on what they see as the very first step of web design. However, the truth is that you should focus on developing your website first before you put it online. That means you need relevant content that others might find useful. Remember, content first, then design, then branding. For now, here's an article to help you decide on a domain name, but we'll cover that more in detail later.

First step - Download Notepad++ or a similar tool If you have Windows, this should be easy. Then start a document called index.html.

Creating a basic design The first thing you'll want to do is divide your website into <div> elements. Think about reddit. They have the top header, header, main area, and sidebar. If you wanted to have a similar design, start out with the following code. Here's an HTML tester to try it out on.

    <!DOCTYPE html> <head> <title>My Website</title> </head> <div id = "header" style="background-color:red; height: 100px;"> This is the header </div> <div id="textarea"> This is the text area </div> <div id="sidebar"> This is the sidebar </div> </html> <style> body { background-color: #444; margin: 0; } #textarea, #sidebar { float: left; min-height: 450px; color: white; } #textarea { width: 80%; background-color: #111; } #sidebar { width: 20%; background-color: #777; } </style>

Add relevant information Once you have this basic design (give or take the sidebar) all you need to add is some basic information and incorporate design features. But first, make sure you're adequately prepared to take your business to the next step.

Work with other Web Developers This becomes useful later on, as it can take anywhere from 5 to 30 people to keep a website running depending on how big it is.

Get a social media account with your business name, if available Like domain names, these can get snatched away unless you have an obvious copyright or are famous enough for social media companies to oblige and reserve your business name for you if it's not copyrighted (e.g. Apple).

Further design features will be covered in the next tutorial. Anything I missed? Respond in the comments.

Screwed over by Comcast?? Saying I can’t change my service

    Posted: 04 Jun 2018 03:34 PM PDT

Hello. I am a college student who has been renting an apartment with a few of my buddies for the past few years. When we moved in, there was some Comcast rep. that was going door-to-door trying to get people to sign up for Comcast under some sort of college student saving plan.

After the first year, the plan no longer gave me the discount (which was about 25-30$ off 99 channels and fastest WiFi available). When I went online to change our plan, i was unable to do so. Calling their customer service, I talked to some lady that pretty much told me I would not be able to do so at this time. I never signed a contract after the first year when the rep was walking down my street. I would like to change my plan so that I am not paying for all this crap we don't really need. I know cable companies do stuff like this all the time, and was just wondering if anyone had some tips for me to help deal with this without paying a hefty fee. Thanks

Advantage of Employing Automation In Your Business

    Posted: 04 Jun 2018 07:10 AM PDT

When you are managing a business, having high mobility in order to cater to the needs of the different elements is not only important but also very advantageous. This is because of the fact that you have a lot of processes involved and some, if not most, are lengthy and a cause for some of your employees to cut corners in order to save time. When this happens, the integrity and standard of your operation go down leading to a whole lot of problems and revenue loss. But because of technology and constant innovation, business owners now have a way to avoid this and make their businesses more efficient, thanks to automation.

An article I have read recently talks about 7 advantages when you use automation as part of your business.

Here is a short summary of that article:

    • Helps deliver a better service at a reduced cost. This happens when you use automation when it comes to delivering your product or service especially with SaaS businesses when delivery is way faster and their product or services can be used right after making the payment. Reduced waiting queues means more happy customers.

    • Helps your employees focus more on what's important rather than being mired performing small and mundane tasks that tend to consume their entire day. Automation can take care of some of the recurring tasks that usually bother your team and let them prioritize and perform tasks that will help your business move forward.

    • With the mundane things out of the way, most of your employees can now help with customer monitoring. When it comes to customer service, all hands on deck should be your motto, but how can you do this if your employees are caught up performing every little task there is? As I have mentioned earlier, automation can help eliminate this problem and free up your team's time.

    • Create a complex machination with the integration of several systems in order to drive your business forward rapidly and aggressively without missing a beat. With automation, you can link several processes and tools together in order to take care of things with just a few clicks of a button. It's like hitting several birds with one stone.

    • Eliminates human error. Failure is always welcome, but there are just some mistakes that you cannot at all cost commit because they could mean your entire business. Automation help eliminate errors because of the fact that they are calibrated in a certain way in order to perform and execute tasks precisely and accurately.

    • Tasks are consistently performed according to your set of standards with the help of automation because of the fact that it can help your employees focus and remove the chances of cutting corners, business growth is also easily measured and determined which area you are performing well and what needs improving.

    • Automation only requires determination and time to learn. You do not have to have a programming background in order to use the advantages it offers that is why it is very helpful for business owners.
