When you follow GAAP word-for-word and still get a Becker FAR question wrong

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 11:55 AM PDT

For those that realized you hate accounting, how’d you get out? What do you do now?

Everyone's reaction when IAS encourages using direct instead of indirect presentation for cash-flow.

Studying for FAR using Wiley CPA and it continuously dawns on me that I don’t know shit.

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 05:52 PM PDT

Guys. I panicked a little today. I know we all learn differently. But seems to me that listening to the lectures, reading over the notes, and practicing mcq's works for me....

Some people told me to take notes, but that takes too long and the program provides excellent notes. I will make flash cards, they are more effective for me. Some others told me to just do mcq's but I need to at least have a general idea of the topic, so watching the lectures help. But this is taking longer than I thought. I watch the lecture, read the notes, complete knowledge check and by the time I'm At the assessment I pretty much know 90% of The information, then I do more practice questions to really nail the section. But anyone have a better way of doing things? Or maybe if this is how I learn the information maybe I should just continue on how I'm doing things?

Trying to become a Professor - Deciding on a Master's Degree

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 08:53 PM PDT

I currently work in industry, and I'm looking to become a professor later down the line, (in accounting, but anything business works) but a Master's Degree is required. My first option is to get a master's in accounting, which would be the fastest, but was also thinking of a master's in IT or finance if they would led to more diverse opportunities down the line in case teaching doesn't pan out.

So, the main concern is do the master's degrees in IT or finance led to better, more diverse opportunities than an MS in accounting and is it worth the extra cost due to not having the prerequisites done from my undergrad? (Extra cost will be about $20,000+) I will also be getting my CPA regardless of degree.

Senior Promotion/Second Year in Big 4

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 08:15 AM PDT

    Hello,

I am a second year at a Big 4 Accounting Firm in a medium to large city. I was told recently by my manager that they would not support me for promotion to senior due to their perception of my quality of work and that I am not working at the level of a senior in order to be promoted.

They said that they could support me for a repeat of my second year, but they are not sure if the office etc is doing things like that and what the upshot of that would be. Does this mean I am getting coached out? In the past on other engagements I have gotten average to slightly below average reviewes, but nothing terrible. Do you have any guidance for someone in my position?

Moving away from Accounting and into running your own business

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 09:40 AM PDT

    Hello my fellow my accountants.

I was wondering if anyone on this sub has ever moved away from accounting practices and into running they're own business? If so, how helpful were all the skills learned while working as an accountant? Did you feel like you had an advantage over your competitor? Was the move worth it?

What do you do in Transfer Pricing?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 03:16 PM PDT

Hi I am an incoming intern this summer at a big 4 in tax.

One of the fields that I am interested in learning more about is Transfer Pricing group. I heard from colleagues that it is more economics based and less tax work, which is intriguing since I am an econ major, but I wasn't sure about what you actually do (modeling, consulting, data analysis, etc.)

Additional Questions I have: Is the pay better for TP than other tax practices? What are the exit opportunities or MBA feasibility? How is the work life-balance?

Trouble getting into Accountant I/Staff Accountant positions, how's my resume?

I've been working in A/R and minor clerical jobs but did not get a response from the entry level accountant jobs on Indeed. Any critiques as to what I can change. I'm not too good with words so I am sure some experience can be worded better.

Is it really considered "bad" to use vacation time at Big 4?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 12:30 PM PDT

Like I understand that the hours are going to suck at Big 4, but my friend who interned at a Big 4 said that it was considered a career limiting move to take vacation time ever. True or nah?

PS: I'm not talking about talking vacation in Q1, but taking vacation in Q2-Q4.

Staying at a small firm vs. going to a big firm

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 02:44 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I've been working a small firm(6 employees) for the past 2 years and decided to apply to a Big 4 position(audit) on a whim. Went through the hiring process and got an offer today.

Overall, my current firm is pretty great. I work 10 to 6 everyday(even during busy season - never worked a weekend), the partners treat me well and I am learning a lot. Some things I don't enjoy are that the work does get boring at times, it does get lonely and the pay is on the lower end.

The work at Big 4 does seem interesting but I don't know if it's worth sacrificing what I have at my current firm. If I don't leave, I'm going to try to use the offer to negotiate a higher pay. I'll receive my CPA designation in a few months and hope to go to industry(F500) in 2-3 years if that changes anything.

I've read a lot of B4 horror stories on here so I am a bit hesitant to leave. Would love to hear what others think.

Should I leave my job for a one-month internship?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 03:08 PM PDT

    Hi reddit,

I'm an undergrad working an accounting job at a small firm. Recently I was offered a one-month internship with a semi-major accounting firm.

I was wondering whether it would be worth taking it up as my goal is to end up in big 4. There's no promise of continued employment at the end of the one month.

    Thanks!

I took Managerial Accounting this semester at college.

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 03:33 PM PDT

I struggled with it, for the most part. It wasnt an easy course for me and with working a full time job (on top of going to school full time) I had my ups and downs with it. But, I refused to give up and I studied the material daily until I felt like I knew it like the back of my hand...

Well, grades were just posted and I got an A in the class! I'm not sure what the reaction will be to this post, but holy crap I'm so relieved. I'm taking Tax Accounting next semester, any future advise from you guys would be wonderful. I'm just so happy!

what math classes should I take for accounting major

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 09:00 PM PDT

I am currently a high school junior who is choosing my math class for senior year. I want to major in accounting and was wondering if I should take Calculus BC a.k.a Calculus II or if I should take statistics. I got A's in both semesters of CalculusI so the difficulty is not the problem. I was just wondering which would be more beneficial for accounting.

Is this a viable business idea?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 05:12 PM PDT

I have been mulling around the idea of potentially starting my own business to help teach and set up different accounting software and Excel to new businesses. I really enjoy working with Excel, and I also want to help support businesses in my community so I thought that this might be the perfect job for me. Do you think this is a good idea? Are there careers already like this? And thoughts or ideas on it?

Audit Room: Musical Chairs, or How my Senior dominated my Staff like a monkey dominates it's blindfolded mate, Part 1

    Posted: 05 Jun 2018 08:30 PM PDT

Day 1. Audit room. Broken vents, have to speak in a higher pitch to talk to our teammates. Two makeshift tables, four chairs, two outlets, one desk. Staff, who arrived to the audit room first, is in the Beta seat (the chair needs its wheels to be greased, and the table top is two inches too low) waiting the Manager to arrive to the Alpha throne (a full-body chair experience complete with plenty of table-crotch open space for him to fiddle his hands during deep audit thinking). Senior walks in third and ends up in a Neutral seat, soon to be joined by the 45-minute late intern.

Senior sniffs out the desk seat for the days when manager is gone, and instantly gets to work in claiming his territory. A bag of chips left behind after talking through a walkthrough. A folder of documents left under the monitor "to help with the glare." An almost unheard muttering of "just leave it there for me tomorrow" just so he can convince himself the Manager approved his use of the desk without anyone having to say anything else.

I'm sorry to say, folks who are still reading, that the Staff has other plans for that desk. And he isn't afraid to FUCK a Senior over to get the chance to carry them out.

All of this is true. Part 2 tomorrow.
