Either CPA or my life is over in a week Posted: 01 Jun 2018 12:54 PM PDT I exaggerate, but the pressure is real. I've passed 3 of 4 exams so far, but multiple busy seasons, being a husband, and being a dad has caused my last exam to be pushed to the very end of my 18 months. I start losing exams the end of June. I'm taking FAR next Friday. If I fail, I lose not just REG, but also BEC two months later. The pressure right now is insane. My performance manager is a boss, and he has worked with me to be able to spend most of my business hours studying. I've been billing till about 1pm, and then studying until 9pm. My busy season essentially never ended as I'm spending just as much time in the office as I did in March and April. I'm exhausted and I've been living with a pit of ice in my chest from fear that I might fail. Plus expectations that I will pass at the office have been growing. I've been light on hours, and while it's been approved, I feel that the expectation is that I will pass. Anyway, needed to get that off my chest. I'm just here grinding away at a Starbucks. I'm on PTO until my exam next week. Wish me good luck, because I need it, and my kids need their dad back. [link] [comments]

Posted: 01 Jun 2018 03:49 PM PDT My best friend at work quit today. Additionally, I'm pretty sure my other 2 close friends at work will end up quitting before next busy season. Now I always thought that I would stick it out for at least a couple more years but now I'm second guessing myself. Since my best friend quit, and my two other close friends will probably leave, I just don't think work will be as enjoyable (ok, bearable). Does this normally happen when someone your close with quits? I'm considering updating my resume. [link] [comments]

Posted: 01 Jun 2018 08:18 PM PDT Long story short I'm about to start for an accounting firm which requires me to obtain a security clearance. They are asking me to start before I get the prelim clearance. Am I crazy for thinking that's a bad idea considering I already have a job? The offer letter States that it's contingent on being able to obtain the clearance, and while I don't think it should be an issue I'm hesitant to quit my job and hope the feds do theirs. TLDR: new firm wants me to quit old firm before I get preliminary approval on a security clearance, is this a bad idea? [link] [comments]
Falling out of love with public accounting Posted: 01 Jun 2018 06:30 AM PDT I've worked in accounting for over a decade, and loved the work for most of that. I know that doesn't seem terribly common on this board, but it's true. I've always been a math & money geek. Started as an accounting clerk, but doing the same projects over and over drove me nuts. Went into public accounting for more challenge and variety (and more money) and found it in spades. I've been with the same firm 8 years, and have been a tax manager for a couple years now. Maybe it's being manager that I hate instead of the accounting, or maybe this started a couple years ago when my amazing mentor was transferred to a new office, or maybe it's because I'm lonely from lack of work friends (turnover sucks) and a long commute, or maybe it's because my kids are 2 and 3 and I only see them for one short, cranky hour on weekdays. Every tax season since day 1, I half heartedly looked around for new opportunities because of busy season burnout, but it passes after a few weeks and I'm good again. Now I've been actively searching for a new job for 6 months, but I feel trapped. The job market in my area is very suppressed for wages, probably because government work is so common ... My pay would be cut in half if I left public accounting. I'm still working on figuring out what I want and how to get there - I have coworkers working from home, working part time, or working part time from home, so I know I have options. But those options would mean I won't make partner, which is what I've worked towards for so long. Take care of yourself first, kids. You're useless if you burn yourself to ashes. Posted: 01 Jun 2018 09:53 AM PDT My understanding is that Big 4 doesn't reimburse you for parking when you're at the office? Seems crazy to me, as nearby parking for my soon to be office is like $25 a day. Can anyone confirm? A smaller regional firm with an office just a couple of blocks away gives every employee an unlimited parking pass for free. [link] [comments]
I'm a creative person with 1.5 yrs of experience in Accounting and got paroled. What to do next? Posted: 01 Jun 2018 09:49 PM PDT I first went into Procurement as an analyst, then Accounting but they're actually almost the same. Same boring Excel, endless reports, only now I have reconciliations instead of purchase orders. I miss writing articles on blogs and websites. I was recently sacked in my probation period and will be let go after 2 weeks. I miss creativity (I used Excel for magazine layouts and even the drawing shapes and logos as a teen, not for data spreadsheets!) and not chasing so many deadlines with strict things. At least journalists talk to people from time to time and report from various places. I prefer qualitative to quantitative things. Feelings over analysis. F2F to too much screen time at a desk. I hated my procurement ops job just as much and disliked both of them since week 1 lol. Here in Europe starting Accounting Analysts and Procurement clerks are paid as much as some workers in factories or truck drivers lol so it's just very overhyped anyway. Not enought meetings at work, no clients, no shareholders, no businesspeople, I don't meet with anyone except my boss and coworkers. Any suggestions where to go? Journalism, graphic design (but still too much computer time), sales, or real estate? I was never good at numbers or math, I failed Accounting, Statistics and College Math the first time and excelled in Journalism, Writing, History, Political Sicence, Law... I'm a BsBA/MS Communications graduate with parents that are good at economics, accounting and numbers. I like IT just as a user of computers but not into programming, coding or anything like that and at almost 30 I'm pushing it for graphic or web design and IT anyway, as they are often ageist. I like writing, arts, sales (loved meeting many ppl at door-to-door but paid too little), real estate properties.... [link] [comments]

What are important interview questions to ask the firm? Posted: 01 Jun 2018 10:54 AM PDT (Location: Texas but applicable everywhere) Position: entry level audit position What do you typically ask about the firm that interviews you? [link] [comments]
Accountants/CPA’s with long hair?? Posted: 01 Jun 2018 08:28 PM PDT Studying accounting and currently have long hair, I slick it back and it's between ear and shoulder length. Is my hair going to a problem finding a job? I am going to for my cpa while finishing my degree. [link] [comments]
[CAN] CPA PEP - Which elective should I take? Posted: 01 Jun 2018 07:37 PM PDT I currently work as a Financial Analyst in the public sector and will be taking the upcoming Assurance module. Any advice on what second elective would be best for me? I hate Finance so it's definitely not going to be that. That leaves Tax or Performance Management. I don't plan on working in a firm going forward but figured it might be good to learn more about Tax (even though I struggled a bit in university in tax class). I was leaning towards Performance Management but wanted incite on what you guys think? Would Assurance and PM help in my career? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Jun 2018 06:57 PM PDT Hey guys I'm flying out to Chicago soon for a welcome to EY event and training in 10 days, the dress code says casual (not sure if they mean business casual), but I was wondering if I could get some advice from people who's been to these events before. What is everyone typically wearing? Should I bring one full suit just to be safe? I'm going to go shopping tomorrow for some business casual clothes, I was wondering what that sweater is called, the one people wear over a dress shirt. Thank you! [link] [comments]
When should I tell my boss that I won’t be accepting the return offer on my internship? Posted: 01 Jun 2018 12:48 PM PDT Basically title. I'm being scheduled for client work past my intern date, under the ASSUMPTION that I'll be staying as full time. I've already made the decision to NOT stay full time, as I've gotten an offer with my dream company. When should I let my boss know? My internship ends in a week anyways. Sorry for reposting -_- [link] [comments]
[Homework] Not Sufficient Funds Check Posted: 01 Jun 2018 05:58 PM PDT I would greatly appreciate if anyone can help me interpret the following. Scott company, a customer of Laird Company, sends a check for $800 to Laird Company for service provided. Unfortunately, Scott does not have sufficient funds at its bank to pay for these services. In such a case, Scott's bank marks the check NSF (not sufficient funds) and returns it to Laird's bank. Laird's bank then debits Laird's account, as shown on the bank statement. Here's the image I uploaded https://ibb.co/eEYVnd https://ibb.co/fOEs0y I understand that the Bank give credits to cash deposits because it is a liability to the bank. And post debits when companies issued checks to pay expenses. I'm confused why the Bank debits a NSF check under Laird's account? What is that $425.6 and who pays it? From my understanding, Scott is paying Laird Company, then why the NSF check is not listed under Credits side on Laird's bank statement? [link] [comments] |
