Why do all major US cell carriers have negative long-term growth?

    Posted: 07 May 2018 11:51 AM PDT

T-Mobile and Sprint obviously have no growth, hence the merger. But AT&T and Verizon also have negative/stagnate growth.

    What's the reason for this?

Should I sell NVDA before earnings?

    Posted: 07 May 2018 06:48 AM PDT

I need cash soon that's tied up in NVDA. It seems every stock in the last week or two has gone down on earnings (miss or beat). So it would be foolish to not see that as a pattern.

    Thoughts?

(Of course I know it's a great long term stock, but that's not the point here.)

    Why is Tencent still struggling?

    Posted: 07 May 2018 08:04 AM PDT

It seems like the market is starting to make a good comeback recently. Almost all my Chinese holdings are having great runs the past 5-6 days (BABA, GELYF) and a few others..

The only outlier is Tencent and it doesn't really make any sense. It's like they're still being dragged down from that big 9% drop they had when Naspers sold a lot of their stock. I'm being patient and will probably buy more if they drop any further, but it's just strange why it's been in limbo for so long

Why has Disney stock been not moving up with all the hit movie releases?

    Posted: 07 May 2018 10:11 AM PDT

I recall Disney being at around 110 but now it's 102. How is it with a company making leaps, strides, and record breaking numbers that their stock barely moves an inch. Why is that?

Good Books to learn about stocks?

    Posted: 07 May 2018 05:33 AM PDT

    Hey everybody,

What are your recommendations on some good reads to get self educated on the stock market?

I just ordered 2 books: "How to Make Money in Stocks: A Winning System in Good Times and Bad"

"24 Essential Lessons for Investment Success: Learn the Most Important Investment Techniques from the Founder of Investor's Business Daily"

I've heard these 2 books go hand in hand and are a good place to start for a beginner.

I also want to read " A Random Walk Down Wall Street" but that seems like a more in-depth read that I will most likely pick up after the 2 books i already bought.

Does anybody have any other recommendations for a beginner with very basic knowledge of stocks. My strategy so far in investing has been either swing trades based off of news, and other than that, medium to long term holds.

Why shouldn’t I buy stocks with buyback programs?

    Posted: 07 May 2018 05:22 AM PDT

Starbucks is one of the many mega corporations that is more than a year into stock buybacks. I was under the impression that companies buyback stocks when they feel the stock value is undervalued. Doesn't that mean it's a win-win for me to buy some SBUX because the company itself is taking extra measures to improve the market cap?

    $CENX and tradewar

    Posted: 07 May 2018 06:41 AM PDT

All the aluminum stock were extremely volatile in the few weeks with all the trade war going on and while century aluminum seems like a decent company, it seems trump is the smoking gun for these stocks and any decision that will come will through the stock to the relevant direction. My question is, how are you handling these stocks that you do believe in? Average down? Hold? I'm not a day trader and I was planning to hold for a good 2-4 years and I know the market is volatile but going from 20% gain on a stock to a -10% in a month and a half is a bit much.

    $BABA or $NVDA

    Posted: 07 May 2018 02:16 PM PDT

I have about $1k to invest after selling off TSLA and I'm looking to invest it in either BABA or NVDA, but I'm not completely sold on one or the other. Any advice on which one is a better value (for the long-term) at their current market price?

What Stocks besides oil would be impacted tomorrow if Trump does NOT pull out of the Iran deal.

    Posted: 07 May 2018 12:59 PM PDT

My guess is he won't pull out completely but will say he's going to "modify" or "improve" it. What that modification is idk but curious what equities y'all think will be impacted at 2pm tomorrow. Or options strategies which will profit from the volitility.

Filing Taxes with a lot of transactions

    Posted: 07 May 2018 09:00 AM PDT

    When filing taxes,

Does your accountant typically charge more based on how many transactions you have made?

I've heard some charge a higher amount based on the number of transactions and this is kind of holding me back from swing trading.

This is my first year trading so that is why I ask.

    Thanks!

$CVS Insiders bought $2M in stock last week.

    Posted: 07 May 2018 12:24 PM PDT

Two insiders bought a combined $2.1 million in CVS stock on 5/4 around the $62 mark. Offering it up for a look here. I'm taking a small stake in my Inside Track portfolio and considering a larger purchase in my Roth account for the 3%+ dividend.

People may be wary with rumors of Amazon entering the pharmacy game, but I can't really see that working with all the regulations involved.

Also love CVS for the fact they stopped selling tobacco products, to be more health conscious, even though that might hurt their long-term pharmacy gains due to overall better health. Or, maybe it helps due to people living longer.

Iteratively securing gains trough a sell-repurchase-cycle

    Posted: 07 May 2018 11:15 AM PDT

Hello fellow investors (by a market-rookie and so far only lurker on /stocks).

Is it reasonable to sell a position for saving gains and buyback shares of the same stock for the original amount invested right after - even as a long-term-investor?

    E. g. a 5.000$ investment sold at 6.250$ after a +25% surge within a fiscal quater with an immediate repurchase of the same stock for 5.000$.

    The situations meta:

    - no wash-sale- or daytrade-intention

    - no change in the company´s or the sector´s fundamentals

    - no spontaneous spike from noise/news/an earnings call

    - no financial urgency for liquifying

    - no highly volatile market like feburary to april 2018

Yes, fewer shares will be owned afterwards. (Neglectable) transaction-fees apply. Time in the market beats timing the market, anyway. And why sell when you still trust the company, right?

Stockpiling for new investments I guess...any thoughts?

Does anyone else think JNJ is a bad investment?

    Posted: 07 May 2018 10:47 AM PDT

Their best selling drug, Remicade (infliximab), accounted for approximately 8.3% of the Company's total net trade sales for fiscal 2017. Problem is, this drug's patent has already expired everywhere but in the U.S and that patent is coming to an end in September 2018. To make matters worse, the patent has also been held invalid by the Federal District Court in the District of Massachusetts. Anyone want to chime in on this? Maybe I'm missing something but this looks terrible for the company.

Edit: I forgot to add that the company still relies heavily on their trademarked products and is currently marketing 4 more immunology drugs. However, this still doesn't make up for the 8.3% from Remicade.
