    The r/StockMarket Portfolio Challenge

    Posted: 06 Mar 2018 06:18 AM PST

    Hello /r/StockMarket

For the past couple months the mods and I have been working together to migrate the weekly stock picking competition, hosted by /u/bigbear0083 , onto Tiingo.

    We're ready to go live!

To sign-up and compete in the stock-picking portfolio challenge, visit: https://www.tiingo.com/p/games/details/r_stockmarket.html

    Then you can

    1. Sign up for Tiingo
    2. Enter your Reddit username - you will then be PM'd an auth code from "Tiingo-Bot"
    3. Many of you have reached out asking me for trading hiring advice, so I reached out to a friend who places recent grads and students at hedge funds & trading firms. My friend and I created a system that, with your permission, can measure your portfolio and meta analytics on Tiingo then use that to find candidates to place at funds. I've done this before in the past successfully, and my friend specializes in this. This is optional.
    4. Join game! Then you can visit: https://www.tiingo.com/p to trade You can also click on usernames on the "Leaderboard" tab to see other r/StockMarket member positions

Here are the instructions in imgur album format: https://imgur.com/a/E0v9A

Please let us know if you have any questions. Look forward to seeing everyone! And there may be a small prize at the end of the game!

    Thoughts on $SPOT?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 05:14 AM PDT

It's down a huge amount since its under-performing earnings report. Do you think this is going to bounce back, or do you think that it's always been overvalued, and now the figures are out it'll settle to something more appropriate?

EDIT: Sounds like there's quite a consensus here, thanks for your contributions everyone!

One opinion of mine (not from an investing perspective) on the many comments about Apple is that, despite having a MacBook, I haven't really 'bought' into the whole Apple ecosystem. I much prefer Android, Spotify etc. from a user's perspective. Spotify seems widely available to everyone; would non-Apple users convert to Apple for music streaming?

    Selling public stocks

    Posted: 03 May 2018 07:40 AM PDT

Hi, I have a very basic question. If I sell a publicly traded stock that I bought earlier, who pays me the money? Is it a company? Is it stock exchange? Is it platform? Is it other trader who bought the stock after I listed it for sale?

the percentage of companies that have beaten consensus analyst EPS estimates this season stands at 71.6%. Any reading over 70% is very strong relative to past earnings seasons.

Below we take the beat rate analysis a step further and look at sector beat rates this season. As shown, five sectors have beat rates that are stronger than the overall market, while six sectors have weaker beat rates.

The Industrials sector is the standout with a beat rate of 79.5% this season. Technology ranks second at 75%, followed by Health Care and Consumer Staples at 73.1%.

On the weak side, Telecom and Energy both have earnings beat rates below 60%, while Utilities and Real Estate are below 65%.

We'll be back to post an update on these readings at the end of earnings season in mid-May.

What are your thought about this issue?

    Stock market game for class

    Posted: 03 May 2018 07:31 AM PDT

This may not be the place, but hopefully someone can help me. So in my business class we have a stock market game that ends next Friday and I need to have 12k in order to get the points. We all started with 10k and I'm at 11.7k. I need to take a big risk now so I have a chance at the points. Are there any stocks that I can just go all in on that will get me lots of money by next week?
