    Weekly Feedback and Support Thread

    Create something? Let's see it!

    Feedback or Support Requester

    Please use the following format:

    URL:

    Purpose of Startup:

    Technologies Used:

    Feedback or Support Requested:

    Comments:

Post your site along with your stack and technologies used and receive feedback from the community. Please refrain from just posting a link and instead give us a bit of a background about your creation.

Feel free to request general feedback or specific feedback in a certain area like user experience, usability, design, or code review.

Feel free to request support with hiring talent, finding a job/clients, recruiting a co-founder, getting your pitch deck made, or anything objective based that is specific to your startup.

You can also receive advice and feedback in instant chat using the /r/startups discord.

    Feedback Providers

    • Please post constructive feedback. Simply saying, "That's good" or "That's bad" is useless feedback. Explain why.

    • Consider providing concrete feedback about the problem rather than the solution. Saying, "get rid of red buttons" doesn't explain the problem. Saying "your site's success message being red makes me think it's an error" provides the problem. From there, suggest solutions.

    • Be specific. Vague feedback rarely helps.

    • Again, focus on why.

    • Always be respectful

    • /r/startups would appreciate your expertise on our discord.

    Support Providers

    • Please post some background information about yourself and why you're capable of providing support

    • Feel free to share a relevant URL

    • Be extremely clear what you are offering your support in exchange for: money, equity, barter/trade of services/products, or a mix of those--or if you are volunteering your support for free

How raising a $2+M Seed Round really, actually went - Founder provides detailed account of the difficulty she faced closing an investment round

    Posted: 28 May 2018 08:19 PM PDT

This article has been making the rounds but I hadn't seen it here, so I wanted to share it. I think it brings an important perspective to the realities of raising funding an early-stage company faces.

The author, having just (ultimately) successfully closed her latest round of financing, provides a detailed accounting of the hardships, failures, and rejections she faced along the way. As someone who went through both successful and failed funding rounds as part of different start-up teams, her narrative of the constant drumbeat of rejections, dropped leads, and endless frustrations rings very true, but isn't typically reflected in most of our narratives around entrepreneurial success. In particular I appreciated her calling out the context-less Techcrunch type press-releases that parade a seemingly endless procession of successfully funded rounds and wild valuations, but doesn't offer much insight into the struggles and challenges those teams faced.

I think stories like this one should be more prevalent within these communities, as it helps paint a more realistic picture of just how bruising this process can be, even for the success stories.

Could somebody give me some advice on a trademark?

    Posted: 28 May 2018 06:31 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

So I'm trying to trademark my brand name and with a quick USPTO search I discovered that the trademark was being used by another company until 2016 and then was declared abandoned.

I've seen a lot of confusing articles/videos about trademarks but none of them really gave me a clear cut answer. I'm going to speak to a lawyer about it this week but I was wondering if anybody here could give me some information.

Is it possible for me to file for the trademark since it is listed as "abandoned"?

    Question about Equity Split

    Posted: 28 May 2018 10:45 AM PDT

Hi all, I recently started helping my friend in his startup of building a rideshare app. Both of us plan to work on it full time, so the work to be done, such as market research, marketing, insurance, and beta launch will be split. The original idea is his and he has already put work in it, and he has paid $30,000 out of his own pocket to have the app professionally made. I recently started helping him out however the equity question popped up and I don't really know how much equity I should ask for. What would be a fair ratio for both of us, considering the work done, work to be done, and the money already put in?

    Starting my own startup [Help]

    Posted: 28 May 2018 12:19 PM PDT

    Hi everyone!

So I'm biting the bullet and starting my own SaaS startup. I currently live in Virginia and my app idea is in the medical field. What I've done so far is identifying the business idea, Target Customer Action, Customer Acquisition Funnel, and of course started working on the code side of it. What I haven't done yet is make it legal. So I'm asking for help on this part because I have no idea about the business structure meaning selecting the Corporate model or something else? IF its the corporate route how many stocks would I sign up to start with? I've read that LLC are better bc of tax reasons and that its easier to set up and C-Corps are for when you will accept funds from VCs. So I think my question is which is better for starting a tech startup right now?

I've seen that I can get this all worked out on LegalZoom but lets be honest is it worth my money having them complete all this for me or is it better doing it on my own after answering the questions I have?

If I can get any guidance from anyone who knows about starting a business or even a tech company that would be amazing.

How do I get a potential partner to work with me? [help]

    Posted: 28 May 2018 03:17 PM PDT

I've worked with someone over the years successfully. I've pulled him into multiple clients. He's made me look good.

Roles switched and I've been pulled in to his client A, made him look good. And I've grown his revenue 350% without asking for anything other than the chance to partner.

In parallel, now I've grown my business. I am still with client A. But also with a client B that is 3x more rev than A for me. I see a lot of potential to keep drawing and growing the spend with the client A.

I hate to watch him lose or miss it. I hate to keep doing most of this stuff without rev sharing. We would be much more effective together.

And I see a real opportunity to partner. But he goes silent when I try to discuss.

He's an engineer by trade. Not very outgoing. Not as openly business minded as me. And has some other pressures with a family.

Time is against us. I can't get him to give me a convo. I see the money there. Not sure what to do.

    Help? Any advice ?

    Two Sided Network

    Posted: 28 May 2018 12:17 PM PDT

Has anyone here been successful in creating a two sided network (the classic chicken and egg / buyers and sellers) and if so what was your strategy at the beginning to bring in the customers and sellers? My only projects so far have dealt with creating a product, so I'm totally new to the idea of trying to bring the two entities together. How do you create the demand and supply when they both depend on each other? I have read a few articles online about it but I want to hear what it really takes from people that have done it. I know its one of the hardest business models to execute, so I'm curious as to how some people accomplished it.

For Those Who Were Accepted Into Techstar Programs, What Stage Was Your Company At?

    Posted: 28 May 2018 11:39 AM PDT

I am interested in learning more about the experiences you have had or heard about Techstars. Typically, what stage have you seen companies at? Have they all had a prototype built? Were most already earning revenue?

I am starting to look into a few programs (for next year most likely, maybe sooner), and am interested in "when" would be the best time to apply. I wouldn't want to apply "too soon". I am a non-technical, an currently in idea phase, I will be setting up landing pages in the upcoming months and in the meantime, also looking for a technical cofounder.

How to ask to be a Mentor

    Posted: 28 May 2018 02:46 PM PDT

Hey guys! I'm a I.T. professional, I want to start a consulting business/break fix business for residents.

I used to know a guy when I was a kid, while I was getting a haircut, he'd walk into the Barbershop attempting to sell CDs. Now he owns a Real Estate Business with 27 employees. I want him to be my Mentor in exchange for free computer work. I know this sounds weird but how does one go about asking someone to be their Mentor?

I am planning to ask him to lunch at this chicken place. Can anyone give me an idea of my sequence? Should I say "Mentor" the second I talk to him on the phone, should I save it as a question til the end of the lunch?? Do I present the skills/service I will offer to him first as to show my value? Then ask for the Mentorship?or after?
