Ontario: Getting sued for $1,000,000 because of a dog bite that occurred on my property (not even my dog)

    Posted: 06 May 2018 08:26 AM PDT

This is happening on Ontario for context and I could really use a little advice for what is hopefully a relatively easy question.

5 defendants are listed on this lawsuit. I have just filled out form 18A (Statement of defence) from attorneygeneral.jus.gov.on. No issues there, after a brief conversation on the phone with a lawyer friend I was given some unofficial advice on how to go about that part of it.

Problem (?) is, the other defendants listed on this claim are likely going to just ignore it. I do not believe they are seeking legal council, but I know that I need to present this statement of defence to the other defendants listed on the statement of claim.

I don't even know how to get in contact with these people any more. I haven't spoken to them for well over 2 years. Frankly, I don't even know where they live any more. No phone numbers, no social media, nothing.

I believe I am supposed to keep my fax records from sending my statement to all the defendants, and submit them along with a sworn affidavit that all parties have been notified of my statement of defence, along with the copy that I submit to the courthouse.

What the hell do I do here? I don't intend to receive further legal council in this affair, so I think it's on me to serve these people these documents. The lawsuit is a little bit absurd and I shouldn't have any trouble removing my name from the lawsuit as I was neither the owner of the property where the incident occurred or the dog that bit the person, hence my hesitation to involve lawyers that I'm going to have to pay for.

If anyone can give me some sound advice as to what I'm expected to do in this situation it would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: All right, looks like I'm going to be finding a lawyer to help sort this out. This is a little above my pay-grade. Thanks to everyone who has posted advice, more is still absolutely welcome. I will post an update once I have consulted with a civil defense attorney.

Got raided by the FBI. The aftermath

    Posted: 06 May 2018 10:56 AM PDT

So two years ago I got raided by the FBI. Out of completely nowhere. I was sitting in my apartment. I live in New York. And boom the door comes down and like 5 of these bastards come in. They have a warrant and take all of my electronic devices. I don't even know what I did. I am a normal guy who works a normal job and does normal things. They said that I am under investigation. So about 1.5 years passes and I hear nothing. During this time my health takes a toll because this is all I can think about. Then two months ago I get a phone call from their field office saying investigation is closed. I am relieved.

I asked when they would return my devices. They took an xbox, 3 cell phones, 1 new Macbook, 1 desktop, 2 super old laptops, and an ipad. They said they would tell me when to pick it up. I have called a bunch of times and they pretty much are uncooperative at this point. They don't really care anymore because their investigation is closed. I have thousands of dollars worth of devices in their possession.

That is not my only problem. Can I figure out why I was investigated. Literally the worst thing that I have ever done in my life is watch pornhub if that is illegal? I mean in 4th grade I changed multiple grades on my report card and in high school I forged my parent's signature. Man bad things happen to good people and I feel like my good life became like shit because of these fuckers. I bet someone wanted to fuck with me and they did.

I'm fairly certain I found a sexual predator while at a park today, not sure what is the right course of action.

    Posted: 05 May 2018 11:16 PM PDT

Today my friend and I were at a local park, we arrived at the same time as another car and out of that car came 5 people, 1 older looking guy (mid 20's to early 30's) and 4 young girls (about middle school aged). We didn't think much of this other than it seemed a bit odd and continued prep for our hike. We did smell a strong odor of weed when we got out of the car and could only be coming from their vehicle the way we were parked.

I'm a professional photographer by trade so I had my big camera with a big zoom with me. I was shooting portraits of my friend with this setup. A little into our walk I see the group again and notice that all the girls seemed to be dressed very provocative for that young age, one was in a bikini top and very short shorts (mind you, this is upstate NY and the park was high up, it was roughly 55-60˚ there so not that type of clothing weather). I also noticed that these girls seemed to be acting very strange, almost as if they were drugged (laying on the ground randomly, staring at random objects, jumping on people and things, just acting very strange and not like normal hyperactive teenagers).

At this point, I still haven't had the ability to get a good look at the guy so I still thought it was maybe a father or something of that nature... that was until we were further into the hike and saw him taking pictures of the 4 girls back sides and hugging/kissing on one of the other girls as the others take pictures of it.

At this point, I pulled out my camera and pretended to take pictures of my friend when I was really taking shots of him and the kids, once I zoomed in he did not look like an 18 year old or father, he looked as if he was in his mid 20's to early 30's. I talked to another guy there about it and he said he noticed the same thing. A little while after hanging there a bit sneaking photos he seems to catch on, the whole time he was very suspicious of his surroundings too, always looking around to see what was going on.

Once he catches on he quickly starts to leave but not until approaching me, the conversation went as follows:

Him: What type of camera is that?

    Me: It's a Sony

At this point he is very close to me and begins to grab my camera.

    Him: Can I see it?

Me: No, I can't let you do that, sorry

He now just lets go and begins to walk away, after a short distance he turns around.

Him: I hope you didn't take any pictures of me on that, right. Me: Nope

Then he just leaves. At this point, I'm certain something is up and go into full "I have to catch this guy mode". In my 7 years of being a photographer, not once have I ever been approached by someone... and I shoot pictures of people with me blatantly in sight all the time, I was hiding it this time so he couldn't tell.

I trail behind him slightly and end up being able to get a picture of his license plate, it is registered in NY. He left very quickly.

I've tried contacting 2 local police stations but have been unsuccessful as it was at 9pm on a saturday, I'm going to attempt going to one tomorrow morning.

My question for you is, is my suspicion justified and legally am I allowed to make a complaint like this? What would be the proper course of action?

Parents saying I owe rent from when I was in high school in the 90's (MN)

    Posted: 05 May 2018 11:57 PM PDT

I have completely cut off contact with my family. They, however, continue contacting me.

Recently I was told I missed a rent payment 20 years ago when I was in high school (yes, I started paying rent when I was 16 and in high school.

    Can they charge me?

Edit: Thanks everyone. I thought I was okay, but needed reassurance. They are nuts, I'll ignore them for now.

In Kansas. Are parents responsible for medical debt obtained by their adult children?

    Posted: 06 May 2018 05:46 AM PDT

The local hospital is attempting to sue me for medical debt. Some of the bills are my sons from after he turned 18 and moved out of my house.

I know I will sound like a cold heartless person but I don't think I should have to pay an emergency room bill from that time he didn't want to go to work so he went to the emergency room.

Parents recently sold a house and after closing needed 10k+ worth of plumbing work, buyer asking for assistance. Advice needed!

    Posted: 06 May 2018 08:57 AM PDT

Hello. This is my first post on this sub so hopefully I include enough information. First off the house was sold in the state of NH.

My parents had recently sold a house a few months ago in the December of 2017. Prior to selling the house they had done some renovations to make the house look better. During this process they had hired some painters to repaint all the walls in the house. A few weeks after that job was complete there was some minor flooding in the basement (not a lot but a little). After the flooding they had called the local roto-rooter to have the pipes examined to see what could be the cause of the flooding. After they came out it and snaked it without a camera it was determined that the painters had flushed some of the paper towels down the toilet and that caused the backup and the flooding. The towels were removed and the pipe cleaned. Thus my parents thought the problem was solved. So during the sale of the house there was no mention of the recent flooding since they thought they had rectified the issue. So now we are in April and my parents receive a letter from the buyers stating that they had noticed that the concrete where the flooding had occurred was generally wet (not actually flooded just wet). They had the line cleaned and snaked a few times but the problem persisted. They finally had someone come out and run a camera through the line to see what was going on it. The substance that the pipe was made out of was Bermico and the letter states it expired before the year 2000. The plumbing company said that it would need to be replaced immediately with PVC pipes. The letter goes on to state that the plumbers and excavators had to dig quite a bit all the way out to the road to have everything replaced.

So thats the backstory. The main question is are my parents on the hook legally for any of the bill? The letter that was sent to them did not include any specific amount just that they are looking for help since it was such an expensive fix (10k+).

If you need any other information I would be happy to provide it.

    Thank you in advance! :)

Mother wont pick her children up from our house. (Babysitting)

    Posted: 06 May 2018 10:27 AM PDT

Yesterday we agrred to watch two kids from 7:30pm to ~2am. We received a text late at night saying her sister was in jail or whatever but she would pay us more if we could watch them until the morning. We agreed. At 8:20 we attempted to make contact to see when she would arrive. No response. At 10:50 we informed her that it was going to be an additional 10$ an hour after 9am and she neeslds to get her kids by 1pm. No response still.

If we continue to not receive responses and 1pm comes, what can we do? Can we take them to a safe haven? Police? Charge drastically more?

My employer scheduled me to work 1 hour, showed up to work and they forced me to work 9 hours.

    Posted: 06 May 2018 08:29 AM PDT

The building I work in had a maintenance window booked for Friday. When I came into work Thursday, they let me know that since the majority of my shift fell in the maintenance window, that they would only have me work 1 hour, pay me out for 3 and then I could go home. I showed up to work with no lunch, and not rested enough to work a full shift since i was told it would be short, and they told me they got the date wrong and that I had to work my normal shift, despite giving me no notice at all. I live in Ontario, and I've looked into the Ontario labor laws, and it seems like many of the laws that would protect me in this situation don't take effect until 2019. Is there anything I can do here?

Shady Character Wedged His Way Into Family

    Posted: 06 May 2018 10:05 AM PDT

A 47-year-old man has befriended my grandmother, who is 90 years old. My grandmother lives alone, but she has four children, including my mother, living within a 30-60 minute drive.

My grandmother and this man met through church. It started with the man offering rides and bringing her places. He seemed to be a kind neighbor to an elderly woman. He has an apartment of his own, his own car, and lives off money from an injury settlement from his last job (apparently). He volunteers at the church, and is a very religious person (Catholic).

All of this would fine, however, it escalated quickly when the family actually met this man, and found out he was staying over night occasionally. Another major red flag is his general behavior. He is extremely defensive, grandiose, and neurotic. He has convinced my grandmother that he is the only person who will drive her to any doctor appointment. Notably, she is getting cataract surgery, and insists that this man takes her to all appointments. It's apparent that my grandmother enjoys this man's company, but up-front this man is not trustworthy.

Perhaps the most egregious situation was when my uncle visited and met the man with my grandmother at her house. A clinical psychologist, my uncle quickly knew something was not right with the man, and asked my grandmother to speak with him outside. She began screaming, and threatened to kill herself with a kitchen knife, which is extremely unusual behavior. My uncle deescalated the situation, but the man called the police and described my uncle as the threatening and violent party. The police arrived and asked the man to leave, but my grandmother insisted her son, my uncle, leave.

This man has put a wedge into the family in only a few weeks. We suspect his intentions are malicious. This man also admits to being a 30 year drug addict (possibly in recovery), on medication (described as "on meds"), currently in the process of divorcing his second wife (public record), but also claims to be an undercover police officer (which he has convinced my grandmother of). I believe he has unresolved mental health issues, so it could be more complicated than we think. My grandmother's next door neighbors are also aware of the situation, and share the family's suspicions.

The family is extremely suspicious, and has an attorney in the process of working with the man's divorce attorney to get more info. But I'm wondering if there is more we can do, such as seek an elder abuse lawyer. We don't want to wait for this man to have more control, or further manipulate the family. My grandmother is already not going to family functions without this man, insisting he is essential to her life. There have a few confrontations with the man where the family asks what his intentions are, and one his strangest responses was "oh - we're not getting married," not that we even asked.

    This is in Wisconsin.

TLDR - "Shady church-friend" is over-involved in my grandmother's life and won't back down. He casts himself as a "protector" but his actions are highly manipulative, and intentions unknown.

My neighbors abandoned their dog and we want to adopt it.

    Posted: 06 May 2018 08:20 AM PDT

Context: A couple weeks ago a ambulance took one of my neighbors to the hospital (They are a couple and the wife has diabetes I think. Not sure what happened because I live in a rural suburban area where people don't really interact with neighbors). They have a Alaskan malamute which they keep fenced in their backyard. A couple days ago we started to hear whining but weren't sure what to do as their car was still in the driveway. Fast forward to today and the dog broke out and broke through one of the other neighbors fences and started knocking on their kitchen door. They tried to get into the owners house and asked around but no one knows anything so because they already have a god they are taking care of it and going to ask at the vets around us if anyone knows anything about the dog. Right now it seems like the owners are just gone (answering machine full, still have a note on their door from when the electricity meters got switched two weeks ago) so if no one shows up soon we might take the dog in because I'm not so sure about giving it to protective services. We have never owned a dog and don't have a fence but we have a large backyard so we could keep it on our porch till we can build one. Any advice on what to do and on how to proceed would be appreciated. UPDATE: We went over to the owners house and there's a empty dog bowl which looks like it's been empty for a couple days. Location is Chestnut Ridge, New York.

YouTube Channel used my script without my permission

    Posted: 06 May 2018 07:05 AM PDT

Back in January of 2017, I worked with a YouTube Channel as an animator. I am located in Quebec; The owner of the channel was in British Columbia.

I was paid for two videos, but they suddenly weren't happy with the rates that I offered, and we had come to an agreement that if I wanted to write and animate a video we could share the ad revenue 50%/50% and I would receive 100$ if the video was approved.

I had never finished animating the video at the new rate, however I had written a script that I submitted for approval when we were discussing the project.

This same YouTube Channel ended up having the script animated by another animator and not compensating me at all; nor even telling me about it. They still wrote my name in the video description as the writer.

I have e-mail logs of us coming to an agreement. Everything is written. I just took screenshots of the video in question and downloaded the video in case it gets deleted.

In one e-mail we talked about ownership. I wrote "As for copyright, the video will completely belong to you; I would only use it for non commercial purposes (in my demo reel)", however this only talks about video. Would the script be included in this statement; therefore voiding me of any ownership of the material, therefore having no means to defend my stance?

Should I contact the YouTube channel in question? Any advice?

I don’t trust my current employer with my personal data.

    Posted: 06 May 2018 06:21 AM PDT

I have been working for a non-profit for over a year now. When I was first hired, they needed a finger printing and a lot of personal data from me. In the end they have a copy of my passport, social security card, birth certificate, college diploma and my bank information for direct deposit. This past year has been a roller-coaster of rumors and drama at my work place. I reside in New York City, there is tax benefit that allows you to use pretax money for commuter expenses. They allow pretax contributions of up to $260 dollars. The accountant at my work place told me that full amount will be taken out of my checks monthly. When I ask if I atleast get a metro card (NYC), I was told that no, I just get to write it off at the end of the year. So I said I would want to opt-out. He old me no, that I sign papers when i was employed. Then I told him about about the law and I spoke to someone in the state about it, only then did he relinquish a hold of taking parts of my wages.

One of the higher ups at the company was terminated for stealing 10s of thousand of dollars from the company. Then only to be rehired a few months later.

They also do not allow overtime pay. Any timecards that result to more than 80 hours for a two week period are adjusted down to 80 hours. There times when I worked over the 80 hours and they are just lost.

I can go on for days about the stupid incompetences I have seen them do, but that would negate the point. I am planning on quitting soon, once I help all the families that I can before I leave. Once that is over and done with, I am gone.

I am just extremely worried at this point. Is there anything I can do to get the copies of my personal documents back since it seems they had me provide way more than needed?

[CA] I have not paid a cent in child support, but am I really in trouble?

    Posted: 06 May 2018 08:12 AM PDT

Bit of a loaded title on my part.

I have a 6 year old daughter. She was born when both the mother and I were 18. The mom decided to stay home (and decided not to go to college) while I went off to a good college in state. We did not make an official custody agreement/child support. I visited almost every weekend (barring weeks where I had finals or projects due) and about a year ago, I moved back to my hometown where I see my daughter regularly. I see my daughter almost every day now and have a stable job.

I have paid for childcare expenses. Sometimes I pay for doctors visits and I frequently buy her toys, clothes, and food (even when I was still in college) but I never really recorded all the money I spent but I did spend generously. Our parents were also pretty chill with the whole situation and supported us and my parents are pretty active in my daughter's life (as are her parents).

Lately, the mom has been giving me passive aggressive comments. She's been saying things like "I bet your happy. You have a good degree, a great job, and a daughter who loves you... and you did nothing to deserve it." (I paraphrased this but that was the gist of it). She also said that I should be lucky she doesn't sue me for child support or get full custody and things like that. She is a great mom but she sacrificed a lot, more than me for sure. She raised our daughter very well and I did my best to raise her too. Our daughter and I have an awesome relationship and I love her dearly and vice versa but I played a more passive role because in the first 4-5 years of her life, I was at college and could only visit about once a week.

I fear that she might actually go to court and try to get an official court ordered custody agreement and court ordered child support. Since I have not "officially" paid child support for 6 years, will I have to pay all those years back? I did pay for a lot of her expenses (I'll have to sit down and make a rough calculation) and I saw her every week and now, almost every day.

Also how realistic is it that I can get 50/50 custody? I have a full time job and the mom, as of one year ago, started working one at a retail store as well. I make a lot more income than her. Our daughter loves us both and I feel like I deserve 50/50 custody too. Both of our parents also support us and have helped with child care expenses/rearing and have stepped up when we needed help.

    So my questions are

    • How likely is it that I will be ordered to pay back 6 years of child support?
    • How likely is it that I can get 50/50 custody given our circumstances?

I would like to donate land to the city, and I want to ensure that they use it for something that benefits the citizens

    Posted: 06 May 2018 06:11 AM PDT

    Hello Reddit!

Long story short, my grandparents bought cheap land ages ago with the intention of building a new house on it, but never got around to it, so for the last 40 or so years its been passed down from one person to the other, and no one wants it, almost solely because no one will ever do anything with it. It is in a low income city, and other worth a few thousand dollars as is, and even with a brand new house built it would only sell for 40 to 50 thousand given its location.

All in all, taxes are expensive, neighbors keep putting their stuff on it, and no one in my family is ever going to use it. Instead of selling it, I would like to donate it to the city on the grounds that they turn it into something that could benefit those around it, i.e. a small park, community garden etc. I simply don't know if there is a way to ensure that's what they do with it vs. something less giving to the citizens. Can anyone help me in terms of this? This is in the state of Minnesota.

tl;dr I want to donate land that I'll never use, is there a way to ensure that the city doesn't turn it into a landfill?

Boss is threatening to take losses out of my pay

    Posted: 06 May 2018 05:01 AM PDT

Sorry for the quality, I'm on mobile.

I work at a gas station in Ontario, Canada. Recently the owner has been threatening to take losses, which he believes are at fault of the staff (cash registers are off, customers stealing, etc.), out of our pay.

Also, anyone who has worked at a gas station knows that drive-off's are a common issue. Where I work, people frequently pump gas and some way or another end up driving away without paying for it. The owner believes that because the staff are supposed to be monitoring the pumps when this happens, he should not take this loss.

It doesn't help that they are constantly messing up our pay. Every time cheques are distributed, at least 3 people have been underpaid.

I have been working there for a while, even before this owner took over, so I know that this is not allowed. He has brought this up to me before, threatening to reduce my pay. I didn't think much of it at the time and always double checked my pay stubs afterwards. As far as I know, he's never actually gone through with this threat.

But recently, we hired this young guy. He's a super cool guy and a great worker. He approached me the other day and told me that the owner is making this threat to all of the new, younger staff. He told me he doesn't want to work there anymore.

What can I do about the owner's threats?

Previous 'repair' to my RV has caused a much more expensive issue. Is the original service center liable?

    Posted: 06 May 2018 09:58 AM PDT

    Summary

About 6 months ago an RV facility in Maryland fixed an issue with my RV. It appears that this 'fix' has now resulted in a serious (and likely very expensive) issue. Are they liable? If so, how do I prove it? And how do I make them pay?

    .

    History

I have a 43' 5th wheel RV (the kind you tow behind a pickup truck). The 5th has three axles, giving it 3 wheels on each side. About 6 months ago, my back right brake was overheating. I brought it to a reputable RV service center. They said that a brake line was pinched and they replaced it.

    .

    Now

While pulling out of an RV campground in South Carolina I heard a grinding noise from my back right wheel. I carefully drove it to the closest RV service center and they pointed out that the back two right wheels had gone all the way through the brake pads, ruining the pads, calipers, pistons, rotors, etc. They noted that the pads on all other tires looked nearly brand new and unused. They pointed out that this was very unusual as brakes are made to wear evenly and said that it appears that the back right two tires have likely been responsible for stopping the RV for the last 6 months. (I am a cautious driver and avoid the need to slam on the brakes hard so I would not have felt any decrease in stopping power).

    .

    Summary

The current service center believes that when the original work was done in Maryland, air was introduced into the brake lines, and the original service center only bled the air out of the wheels they worked on...the back right two. The air in the lines would have dramatically reduced the braking ability of the other wheels. The current service center has not yet pulled the wheels and brakes apart. No need to tie up one of their bays until they have the parts in and can actually do the work.

    .

    Question

Is the Maryland service center responsible for the damage that they caused from shoddy work when they did not bleed all of the air from the lines? If so, how can I prove it? If I can prove it, how do I force the Maryland service center to pay for the damages?

I’m being named guarantor for my stepchildren without my consent? Colorado

    Posted: 06 May 2018 12:08 PM PDT

Hi LA! Long time lurker, first time poster.

I am the step-parent of two minor kids. I carry them on my health insurance. My insurance is fantastic but extraordinarily cheap so this makes sense.

I recently found out my spouse's ex, the children's other parent, has been writing my name as the financially responsible party/guarantor at every provider they've seen (3 different practices in total). In addition to this, they intentionally provide my information while using their address, so any bills will be sent in my name, to them.

The children's other parent refuses to acknowledge this issue, much less explain why they are doing this or offering to fix it.

I haven't adopted my stepchildren, nor have I ever agreed, verbally or in writing, to be the financially responsible party for their bills.

Am I screwed? Where do I go from here to fix this?

[KY] A woman I know of is searching for free puppies on Facebook, “adopting” them, and then using them as bait in a dogfighting ring. What can I do?

    Posted: 06 May 2018 11:39 AM PDT

    Hi, everyone.

To start, I live in Texas. A Facebook post came across my timeline with this woman's information on it who lives in Kentucky. Some well-meaning people are trying to warn others about this woman, "N," who is adopting puppies and then using them in a dogfighting ring with her boyfriend.

I saved the image album. There are dozens of screenshots of her looking for puppies in local Facebook advertising pages, and most damning, a series of screenshots of private conversation between her and a "friend" wherein she admits to taking possession of puppies and small dogs for dogfighting. She confesses to "needing the money" and details her plans in the messages.

The screenshots show her looking for "dogs that will stay small" and have her commenting "how cute!" and even offering to pick the dogs up. It's horrific.

As far as I know, she has not been apprehended by police and her Facebook profile is still active.

I am absolutely sickened by this and want to know what I can do as a bystander. Who should I call to get the right people this information? I am not directly involved in this, so I don't know if my word or testimony will be helpful. I just want her to face justice.

    Any help is appreciated.

EDIT: it appears also she is looking for kittens as well. Disgusting.

My landlord says he didnt receive my rent but my bank says it went out and the money is no longer in my account [VT]

    Posted: 06 May 2018 09:06 AM PDT

I use a rental site called erentpayment.com to make my payments. In April, I went to pay my rent using this website and from my end everything seemed okay. A couple weeks later my landlord contacts me saying my rent got returned for insufficient funds. I checked my statement to find out that the website charged me twice for $700 (for a total of $1400). The first time it went through on my end and then the second time over drafted my account and was sent back. My landlord never recieved my first payment and only has record of my second getting returned. They contacted the website (as will I tomorrow morning) and they also have no record of the first payment. So I went to check with my bank and they reassured me that the first payment went out and printed me off my statement so I could show my landlord that it did indeed go out. I'm meeting my landlord tomorrow to show him my bank statement but I am expecting the worse. He has already threatened to take it out of our (me and 4 roommates) deposit. Here is the thing tho. My situation at this place is a little strange. I took the room I'm in over from someone else. I never signed a lease and never gave a deposit, just my first months rent and subsequent rental payments. So there is nothing he can do to me, but I do not want to duck over my roommates as they would take the loss. Any advice on how I should proceed would be appreciated. And if worse comes to worse and I have to go after the deposit in court should I give my roommates the $700 then try to recoup it from my landlord or just support them in going to small claims court? Is there anything I shouldn't say to my landlord that will screw me during litigation?

    Thanks in advance.

Family member in coma, we discovered she fraudulently opened accounts

    Posted: 06 May 2018 11:44 AM PDT

First of all- throwaway because reasons. And I'm in the USA (Illinois)

Family member (Jane) is in a coma and has been for over 2 weeks. Her husband (Bob) has discovered that she has opened multiple credit card accounts in his name. (The current total seems to be around 15-20k under his name.) He is a little older and doesn't use a computer at all. Jane has always had control (married to Bob 25+ years) of any and all finances.

We also discovered that Jane has taken out multiple credit cards in Bob's mentally ill/disabled brother's (Jim) name. We are also looking into if she had opened up anything in her adult son's name.

We don't know Jane's prognosis. We don't know if she will awaken from the coma, we do know that if she does she will be disabled, and if she is well enough to return to work it will be months away from now.

Bob is understandably devastated. She seems to have had an entire life that she hid from him. She was very good at covering her tracks, and if it were not for her current health situation no one would have found out.

My question to you is: what do we do now? I am going to go through any paperwork we can find, and I am going to get credit reports for Jane, Bob, Jim, and her adult son. Other than that, what should we do? Bob's bank did tell him that he will probably need to file charges against her for illegally getting the credit cards (and maybe loans, we're not sure yet) using his and his disabled brother's information. He of course isn't really thrilled with that idea, and is not going to rush into any police involvement unless he absolutely has to.

Other than the credit reports, is there anything else I should be looking into? I don't have any of her email passwords. Thank you all for your help.

Parents won’t help put my mentally disabled sister on disability and want her to move out, I want to help.

    Posted: 06 May 2018 12:45 PM PDT

This might not be the right sub. I'm sorry. I just need some tiny guidance as where to begin with this situation. My younger sister just recently turned 18; she's graduating from a vocational school that specializes in helping students who can't learn in a normal classroom because she's never been able to speak in complete sentences, and she has limited attention and cannot really learn complex things like driving or cooking. She has gotten work experience from her school but she can only work simple jobs like cleaning and can't really work with people. My parents aren't great with money, and they frequently take her paychecks from her small jobs and leave her with little to spend.

They want to put her in assisted living or a facility for people with the same problems when she graduates because they don't want her to live with them anymore but they refuse to acknowledge that there's anything wrong with her. She's gotten tests done when she was younger but my parents never followed up. IIRC she might have some form of asperger's. They said they don't want to file for disability for her because it's too much paper work and they'd have to keep track of her finances and they don't want to do that. Does she even qualify for disability, and is there any way I could apply for her? My parents have all her documents and I'm not sure they'd be willing to give them to me. I just want to make sure her life is good and if she could be getting money to help her, I'd jump through the bureaucratic hoops to get it to her.

Just from my quick searches it seems like she'd probably need to get examined again to prove she has the mental disability, so my parents would have to pay for that and that already seems like too much for them to help me. Any help or advice would be appreciated, this is in Ohio if that matters.

Being sued $170k for embedding a YouTube video

    Posted: 06 May 2018 11:52 AM PDT

-- EDIT -- (Need to add a little bit more info) 1. This is in Canada 2. This is a demand letter, they said that they could sue for $700K but are willing to take $170K to settle it.

    3. Thank you all for your help.

I embedded a YouTube video into the header of a website and am being sued for 170k.

The video shows as a standard YouTube license.

I did not have permission to embed the video as I never asked and that was stupid of me.

In the lawsuit they state that since the video that was placed on YouTube was put together by using 30 different video shots they're suing as if I stole 30 different videos.

I did not make the video on YouTube. The YouTube video was made by the same person that made those 30 different shots and placed on YouTube I simply embedded the video that he made not knowing anything about how many shots it was made with.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. This lawsuit has me scared so much that I am having a hard time sleeping.
