Legal Advice [NY] Landlord sold me "all utilites included (inc Direct TV)" and then used my information to sign up for utilities (w/o consent). I pay landlord. Landlord doesn't pay DirectTV. I get hit with collections. Did I mention Landlord also owns local DirectTV dealer? Who do I report this to?

    Posted: 09 May 2018 05:08 AM PDT

I moved into an apartment complex last year. The lease said all utilities were included, listing them out. I was to pay a flat fee monthly to the landlord for these. No issue with heat, electric, or water. Internet and DirectTV were also included.

Turns out the landlord company made a change in the direct TV account, and it started accruing late fees. I was then made aware they had signed up for DirectTV under my name without my consent. So although I pay them monthly, because of a clerical error, it would appear that I didn't pay directtv.

I am now on the line for my credit getting ruined, and having to pay the late fees. I paid my landlord on time, every month for their utilities fee.

Now it turns out the Landlord owns another company, which is an ISP and a DirectTV MDU dealer. So it appears that they pull people in with "all utilities", sign tenants up for direct TV, make commission off the 30+ apartments they own monthly - all without tenants consent. They're double dipping, and I'm left with the bill.

I have no idea how to fight this. Landlords told me shove it. Can't find any info on my local county's website about who to call. The financial NYS fraud website doesn't have an option for reporting this kind of stuff.

    Could use some help here...

    Sincerely,

little guy getting fucked by big guy.

    edit:

Called direct tv corporate. Also told me to shove it. Operator kept repeating "Go to the system operator (The MDU Dealer)". I'd explain that the MDU is who i'm accusing, and they just ignored and kept repeating "Go to the system operator." WTH... There's no way to report to DirecTV

    edit2

    • I moved out of the apartment with my lease ending a while ago
    • This was the only utility in my name that I know of
    • Landlord = company, not a single person. They also have a stake in the ISP/ DirecTV MDU

My child was injured at school and it was completely mishandled. I believe the school is preparing for a possible lawsuit - MI

    Posted: 09 May 2018 07:24 AM PDT

First I would like to ask that this not be crossposted. This involves my child and it's important I protect her identity. Thank you :)

Monday I go to pick my children up from school at 3:45. Upon arriving my oldest daughter is motioning me toward the office and tells me her sister (10) is in the office bleeding pretty bad. When I go into the nurses office there is bloody shoeprints, a wastebasket halfway full of bloody gauze and wet wipes, and blood on my daughter clothes, hands, and arms. I ask what happened and my daughter explains she pinched her finger in a cabinet in one of the classrooms at 9:30 that morning. I asked the secretary that was trying to bandage her up if she had been bleeding like that since that morning and she confirmed she had. I of course was pissed and asked why none of the people on her emergency contact list was called (I wasn't rude, just shocked). She shrugged and said the nurse was supposed to handle that but leaves the building around 1pm. I did not know a finger could bleed like that. My daughter was pale and shaking. I took her to the nearest walk in clinic where she received 6 stitches, as she had pinched a chunk of skin off.

Tuesday morning after dropping them off I went into the school and asked to talk to the principal. I explained what happened, and again asked why I was not contacted and why they let my daughter bleed like that all day. (She also said she had gone to the office 5 times throughout the day because she kept bleeding through her gauze and getting it everywhere). He seemed shocked and apologized profusely. He also said the nurse did not follow protocol and he would talk to her about it as well as apologize to my daughter for not taking care of her.

Yesterday after picking my daughter up from school I asked how her day went. She then tells me she was called down to the office and asked a bunch of questions. She couldn't remember them all but said they asked how many stitches she received, where I took her for them, who the physician was, etc. And wrote all of her answers down on paper.

My questions are - is it even legal for them to ask my daughter those questions without an adult present? Is this because they are afraid I'm going to sue so they are trying to cover their own asses or possibly something that is routine within public schools?

Also, is there someone I could contact about this? I don't feel like they've done enough to rectify the situation and I'm concerned with how they handled the blood. Just throwing everything in a wastebasket and letting her walk around with blood all over herself all day? Isn't there some protocol for that too?

I'm trying to not be emotional about this situation but I am very upset they let my daughter bleed like that for 5 hours and did practically nothing to help her. She's anxious to even go to school now and keeps asking me what she can do when they won't call me. They took away our peace of mind.

Sorry for the long post, just trying to get everything out there for the best advice. Thank you in advance.

[CA] My landlord is forcing me to stay out of my apartment to do renovations. Do I have any recourse?

    Posted: 09 May 2018 10:36 AM PDT

My landlord is doing a massive renovation to my building. So far I've been dealing with random water shutoffs thar last hours at a time. But starting next Monday, I will not be allowed in my apartment between 8AM and 4PM, weekdays, for almost three weeks while they rennovate. I also have to move everything from my kitchen and dining room into my bedroom during that time. I'm curious if I'm entitled to anything (hotel accommodations, reimbursement for kennel expenses for my dog) while they do repairs. Can I demand to pay a reduced rent while my furniture is rearranged and I'm forced to be out?

Also, I'm being told that as soon as the rennovations are done, my rent is going up 10%, mid lease. I'm not sure about that either.

    Thanks for your help.

Homeless meth addict with HIV lives in the abandoned janitor's closet right next to my office. Please help me!!!

    Posted: 09 May 2018 10:05 AM PDT

So this is a crazy situation. I go to a public university in California and I work in the university's hospital during night time shifts helping with office paper work and such. I work in a small office in the basement of the building. Well, about two months ago I noticed a weird noise coming from the room right next to me. The office I work in is a very small two person room in the middle of nowhere. I decide to go out and investigate. I noticed the noise came from the room next door which is the janitor's closet. I knocked and the closet and then almost shitted my pants. This man, maybe 6'3 or 6'4 came out of the room and he looked like a frickin ghost with tattered clothes, a lifeless face, a scruffy beard, no expression, etc. He was holding a damn needle as well. I literally ran for my life. I ended up calling the cops and they took him away. They ended up finding traces of meth on him.

I was talking to some co-workers and learned that this guy used to frequent the free HIV clinic offered by the hospital about two to three years ago and had been rumored to be living in the catacombs of the hospital (aka basement). Nobody ever really bothered because nobody could confirm that he did until I found him that day. They also said he is a patient at the student run clinics each week to get treatment for his drug addiction. Now two weeks ago during my shift I heard the same noises that I heard before from the room next door. However, this time two minutes after that I heard knocking on my office door. Bear in mind this is at 2 A.M. when the hospital is isolated, and I am one of the only people in the basement offices. The basement is massive.I look through the small window on my door and the guy is back. I call the cops again and they take him out. This happened repeatedly for the next 4 days. This guy is not mentally stable either and has HIV I presume from drug use and sharing needles (just my hypothesis). However, yesterday I called the police again because he was back. The cops literally told me just to deal with it because it is a public hospital and they can't keep wasting resources to simply come and take him out every day. The hospital is not doing anything about it either. I am literally scared for my life everyday. I am 5'2 and a pretty small and petite 19 year old. What in the world can I do? What happens if I get hurt and this guy attacks me or assaults me? He literally lives in the closet next door.

[KY] Father found out a friend of Mother's installed camera pointed at Mother's bed in their home without their knowledge

    Posted: 09 May 2018 08:55 AM PDT

So, my mother found a camera installed in an entertainment center pointed directly at her bed. It's unknown exactly how long it's been there and who all has been recorded. (This is located in the main family room of the home; mother sleeps on a bed there due to some medical / mobility issues. Everyone who visits the home congregates in this room.)

This friend has a recent history of incarceration for drug use and I have a suspicion the friend installed this camera in hopes of recording something illegal and then taking it to police for hopes of lighter punishment or to keep as leverage in the future.

While I haven't seen it myself, my father informed me he had found the camera, changed the locks on the house, etc. and stated it recorded audio and video.

Mother, obviously, doesn't want to go to the police because she fears what her friend may show or tell police. Both of my parents are of the mindset that they just want him never to come in the home again, cut all contact and have been asking him to get his personal belongings (and the camera) out of the house, which he refuses and sends harassing text messages to my mother.

This "friend" over the years has repeatedly stolen from my parents, brought drugs into their home, used their home (while parents are away under the guise of watching the home for them) to invite prostitutes and to peddle drugs, etc. (I realize that's all irrelevant)

I'm fairly certain, although not 100% yet since we don't know how long the camera was there, that I've been recorded as well without my knowledge when visiting my parents.

How illegal is what this friend has done? If there happens to be illegal things that were recorded, what could happen to my mother / parents? (Father is not involved in any of these activities, it's solely my mother and her friends. He almost never enters that room unless it's to speak to my mother/kiss goodnight/etc. Never when other people are there)

I'm livid over the situation, my parents just see it as "more drama". I'm tired of him getting away with things like this and I'm tempted to go to the police myself.

My boss had a meeting with minority clients and told them not to trust the white people...

    Posted: 08 May 2018 09:55 PM PDT

I work with inmates in a jail setting. My boss, who is black, gathered about seven inmates together in a room (hispanics and blacks) and told them "don't trust the white people because they're deceptive and are trash and they will screw you every time". The inmates were understandably upset by this conversation and began to tell other staff about what was said. My bosses boss got involved, and had a few of the inmates write statements about it. So there is official documentation from inmates and there is video of him meeting with them on camera, but the camera does not record voices so you can't HEAR what he's saying.

When confronted by another staff member, my boss apologized and said he was "passionate" and wanted to be a role model to these inmates. How he thinks racism and role model go in the same sentence is beyond me....

I am white, and I am a minority in this environment as there are basically five of us who are white in the whole building, and this particular boss has done nothing but torment me since he was transferred to our unit about six months ago. He's suspended me (which I fought with a grievance, got overturned, and got a free paid five day vacation), he's written me up, he sends constant emails to me which he does not do to other staff, and he holds me to a standard that other staff do not have to meet. I have previously talked to HR about feeling race is a significant issue in this building, but they didn't believe me so I've silently suffered since then and I am so tired of it, only to be made aware today that my boss is also doing it now.

I am understandably pretty upset by this news, I don't feel safe in this environment anymore knowing he feels like this and telling inmates this, I feel like he's trying to fire me (which, actually he can't, but he can make a case and lie to his superiors and they can...which is how I got suspended..I had to prove he was lying) and I'm not sure what exactly to do to cover myself. Apparently, he and his boss know this is a big thing and are trying to keep it from HR. They keep saying "keep everything in the facility and don't snitch". I'm afraid if I do go to HR, the crap will hit the fan and they're going to retaliate against me. They're apparently having a meeting with some of the higher up white staff tomorrow for him to explain what he said and why to them...but I am not invited to this meeting.

Anyone have any ideas how to address this and protect myself? Location is Texas.

[TX] I am being asked to issue a retraction on a rightful DMCA.

    Posted: 09 May 2018 06:11 AM PDT

About 7 months ago I ran into a large twitter account of a sports company that stole my image and cropped out my watermark. I am a high school student and freelance photojournalist and this was my first time a large company had stolen an image from me. On 10/14/17 I sent a DMCA take down request to Twitter. Later that day it was approved and the content was taken off of Twitter. I tried to reach out and contact them at the time to come up with some sort of resolution if they wanted to use the image, but I never received a response. Well flash forward to today I got an email reading the following (some is redacted):

    Dear Noah,

My name is [REDACTED], I am the Chief Content Officer at [REDACTED]. I am writing to ask you to issue a retraction on the copyright infringement notification you have sent Twitter for a picture we used a long time ago.

We have removed the material from our server and will delete the post immediately upon our account being reinstated.

Twitter has informed me that retractions should be sent to [REDACTED], and should include identification of the material which was disabled and a statement that the reporter (you) would like to retract the DMCA Notice.

Please know that I am making sure that this does not happen again.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you for your time, [REDACTED]

I did a little digging and their Twitter account has been suspended (i'm speculating because of too many DMCA claims against them). For one I am extremely frustrated that now 7 months later they contact me about this manner and its only because their account has been shutdown. Secondly this seems super sketchy/scummy that they stole my content and now i'm just supposed to do them a favor? If I do issue a retraction will that look bad on me, and would I essentially be saying that I had falsely flagged it. Lastly is it possible to license them the photo and then offer a retraction on the basis it was resolved?

    Thanks!

Back for more advice on a neighbor who is harassing my dogs.

    Posted: 09 May 2018 10:06 AM PDT

A little over a year ago I asked you guys how to deal with my neighbor who was harassing my dogs. I'm back to ask for more help on the situation past post

In the last year I have called animal control every time the neighbors dogs where at large, which honestly was 2-3 times a week. I installed a ultra sonic thing to help with my dogs barking, and started working with a dog trainer to deal with my dogs issues. Things went to shit in December when I reported her dogs.I had a video of it and gave a notarized statement of what was going on in the video, my neighbor was taken to court and fined for her 3 dogs being "at large." Now I have learned other people have reported my neighbor but not one would testify against her, and I now know why.

Since my neighbor learned it was me who was reporting her, she has become rather aggressive towards me. Some issues that I have had in the last few weeks have been.

    • Her telling the neighbor next door, loudly in front of me that she is going to talk to my land lord and get me evicted. ( I own my home so, this is just weird)
    • She in front of a news crew decided to say a whole lot of false and honestly defamatory comments. Things like I killed her cats, that I am discriminating against her, that I have caused her pain and suffering ( this is because my massive tree fell on MY house)
    • Because of the tree falling we had lots of people in our yard, and removed a section of our fence. Her dogs started coming onto my property and she chased after them. Now my yard was a huge hazard at this point, metal, nails, glass everywhere, not to mention tons of tree debris. No trespassing signs and caution tape where put up to block the missing fence section. She tore it down to get to her dogs. I saw her on my property asked her to leave and called animal control (they told me I needed to call the police for the trespassing) the police came out and spoke to her and she has only gotten nastier.

    • She calls me her "psycho bitch neighbor"

    • She has tried to call the fire marshal to get my house condemned, so we will be kicked out.

    • She has screamed at me to remove my security cameras, and has tried to knock them down, we brought them inside, and they are still recording.

    • I cannot go into my yard without her yelling at me,accusing me of killing her cat( that a neighbor secretly took in) , and walking my fence line( usually while walking her dog and cursing at me)

    • She is now has started yelling at me my dogs, and kicking gravel at my fence. I only let my dogs out when I am with them, due to things ending up in my yard( broken glass bottles, and food) so it scares my dogs and they bark at her, they also stand by me and growl.

    • She believes I reported her to CPS. I haven't and has started making statements about my two young children. Things like "I'm a terrible mother and she is going to make sure my kids are taken away" and " it would serve me right if my kids get hurt and taken away"

    • I do know she is under suspicion for drug dealing, and the person who told me has reported her for illegal drug activity. ( I'm sure she will think I did this too)

Honestly I don't feel like my kids are safe around her, and if I could I would sell my house and leave, but that isn't in the cards for me right now.

This woman is getting more and more unhinged and violent land I'm wondering. Is there any way I could apply for a restraining order? Or anything I can do to protect myself and children?

Liable for not honking at another driver?

    Posted: 08 May 2018 11:50 PM PDT

I recently got into an accident at a gas station, I live in Utah, I was waiting, fully stopped, for this guy to back out of his parking spot. He didn't stop and ended up putting his trailer hitch through the front of my car. No injuries, but his insurance (Allstate) now says that I'm partly liable because I didn't honk at him. They'll only pay 70% of the repairs and rental car fees. Should I fight it? I have legal insurance through my company, but I'm not sure if it'll be worth it.

Protection order, Cannot go back to apartment and i’m on the lease[vero beach, Florida]

    Posted: 09 May 2018 11:11 AM PDT

Gf of 7 years and I get into argument/fight, she gets a protection order on me, it's granted for one year as of this morning. Judge gives me a one time only to get my things from the apartment and leave. Im the guardian of my 14 year old sister who lives there with me after my mom passed and this puts us on the street.

I cannot contact ex gf at all, she wasn't even living in the apartment anymore and there are bills coming out in my name and rent which is in both of our names.. The fee to break the lease we renewed two weeks ago is a little over 2,000 dollars. I also have some important items of hers in my storage unit (grandfathers ashes etc) I can't talk to her at all to say hey take these

any steps I need to be taking right now to get this mess untangled? Or atleast in a manageable direction

Little sister is at a friends house until I can figure out how to get a place for us to live.

He locked me out of my house

    Posted: 09 May 2018 08:53 AM PDT

I recently just got out of an engagement, and we own a house together. I'll refer to asshole as James. We live in Tennessee

I ended the relationship because of his temper and need for control over my life. It was draining and suffocating. Anyways. The mortgage is in both of our names, but he is unaware, as was I until recently, that only my name is on the deed to the house. Originally, I was going to let him keep the house until he could refinance without me and I'd sign myself off the title as he can afford it by himself and I cannot. Last week we got into an argument and he threatened to not pay the mortgage and let both of us take the hit if I didn't do things his way and changed the locks while I still had most of my stuff in the house. The exact verbiage was "and if you don't agree I won't pay the mortgage, I don't care we will both take the hit"

This was the time I started trying to really do research as to how to get my name off in an inexpensive way. That was when I found out his name wasn't on the deed. I haven't made him aware yet because I'm not entirely sure how to proceed. We've only had the house for a year and we're not in a common law state. I know I need to get a locksmith tumble the locks and take photos of the interior so when I tell him he needs to buy it from me or get out I'll have proof if he's the one that trashed the place. With his temper I fear that could happen.

What I'm looking for is advice on what I can and can't do and how to proceed.

[Las Vegas, NV] Can wife's family evict me from marital home prior to divorce proceedings to circumvent a TRO against wife?

    Posted: 09 May 2018 08:45 AM PDT

Throwaway as my wife knows my normal reddit username.

The house that my wife and I have lived in for 7 years is owned by her aunt and uncle. It was purchased by her father in the Philippines and was supposed to be handed over to her when she "came of age." However, her family has refused to do so in case she and I get divorced. They are afraid I would try to take the home. We have paid all property taxes, HOA fees, repairs, etc. since we moved in. There is no mortgage as the home was bought outright. There is no lease agreement and no rent.

Last week, my wife physically assaulted me and was arrested for domestic battery. She was released on Own Recognizance with a bail condition of staying away from me. Since then, she has been living with the aunt and uncle mentioned before. Our two children have been living with me. She has told them she intends to file divorce. Her aunt and uncle have told her that they will be evicting me so she can move back in the house and keep the children. No divorce has been filed yet, but I do know the aunt and uncle have started the eviction process. I should be served notice within a day or two.

I am a stay at home father and completely reliant on my spouse's income. I do not have time to find a job, save for a place and move out. I am desperately searching for employment, but this 8 month gap in my employment to take care of my kids is hindering me greatly. I'm confident I'll find something, but right now, I'm still sending out resumes. Evicting me will leave me homeless and unable to see my kids. Do I have any defense against this?

(CA) - Landlord refuses to help get rid of mold. The kitchen sink is black with mold, and the whole apartment smells like it. I keep getting sick. Is there anything I can do?

    Posted: 09 May 2018 11:37 AM PDT

Hello Reddit. Title pretty much says it all. I have removed the mold from the sink on about 5 different occasions with bleach, but it keeps returning. I think it's in the plumbing. My landlord won't help anymore. In the past he sprayed some sort of coating on the sink, but the mold ate away the coating after about two weeks. He won't contact me back anymore.

I'm very poor. I'd take care of this myself if I had the money, but these past few years have been really hard times. I'm constantly sick (I don't know for sure it's the mold, but I wasn't sick before I moved here.

Can anybody help me out with some advice

    I'm in California (San Diego).

    Thanks!!

Saying “my ninja” likely got my dad fired. CA

    Posted: 08 May 2018 06:50 PM PDT

Quick dad background : 17 years with this company, promoted to regional manager, and was a top candidate for newest VP role after receiving Manager of the year award of 2017. 150K salary, Sales job frequently involved conference calls, bluetooth calls while driving, going to different hub stores everyday.

Notified to come to HQ last night, Today he was fired out of nowhere for what HR assistant called "bullying", stating a one month open case with other employees justifies with cause. My dad is totally dumbfounded and asks on what claims, where he was referred to contact head of HR. After asking himself for hours what possibly could have been mistaken as bullying he finally calls head HR lady, who said a newer male employee (description given, but no name) complained he would say the N word.

He knows he would NEVER say that word in the workplace or Homelife, but realizes his use of "my ninja! whats up?" and similar slang greetings over the phone, in text and in person. He knows other long term employees have even said/texted him that, but he cant prove it since his company-supplied phone and computer were taken away. Our assumption is that phone calls could have contorted his light hearted phrase, as well as him having hired newer employees as a manger, including some African American's, may have created a misunderstanding of what he was saying.

This seems so blown out of proportion and wrong. yes, the phrase is similar to another, but this is just a typical dad-trying-to-be-hip thing that was never meant in mean spirit or derogatory way, and i do not see how this was fireable offense without any correction notices or citations on file!

My dad is not a bigot or racist. This is a hispanic man married to a Hawaiian woman who's grandkids that live with him are black. He coaches with athletes and coaches of different races for over a decade in high school sports. How has he been fired for just cause? Are we obligated to be shown any proof of this? Does voicemail/texts showing "ninja" does that change anything?

As maybe silly as this is, its real and we don't where to start. Any info helps. Thank you.

Avoiding a forced marriage on a parent's visa

    Posted: 09 May 2018 12:54 PM PDT

Someone I know (18) has recently learned that her parents, instead of taking her to India for a month before sending her off to college, plan to take her to India for a year and force her to marry someone she's never met. She considers running away on the day of her high school graduation preferable to this fate. The biggest problem, however, is that she's not an American citizen. She's an Indian citizen, and her visa to the US is tied to her parents, whose visas expire when they leave the country. The second biggest problem is that her parents are in possession of her documents. Her parents don't know that she knows that they plan to marry her off, but if she says anything, they won't let her graduate at all and send her away immediately. What legal rights does she have to avoid this fate? As specific examples, would she be eligible for some form of asylum to escape such a marriage? Would the TSA be able to protect her from being coerced in this manner? EDIT: What options would be available if she had her documents?

[CA] Friends stolen goods used as evidence in a trial... how to get stuff back?

    Posted: 09 May 2018 09:56 AM PDT

    Hi all,

The following occurred to a friend of mine; I am posting this for the benefit of my own knowledge though if there's solid advise, I'll pass it along.

Said Friend got robbed last year at gun-point; some electronics, car keys and other material (but expensive) items were stolen. Friend reported this to the Police and moved on with this life.

Shortly thereafter, the robbers were apprehended after a brief police chase, occurring in a different county after yet another robbery, which also resulted in the death of an innocent bystander. Friends' stolen goods were found in the car used by the robbers.

As it stands, based on my understanding, the robbers will have three different trials - one for the death of the bystander, one for the robbery leading to the death (in one county) and one for Friends robbery (different county).

It also appears Friends stolen goods are held for evidence and the police department of the county where the death occurred (which is not his county of residence) will not release it.

Is there any hope to getting his stuff back before the end of these trials? This may be going on for years knowing California's legal system...

    Thanks in advance!

(IN) Debt collector is saying I owe money my insurance is saying was paid

    Posted: 09 May 2018 11:14 AM PDT

    Edit: I'm in Indiana

I got a call on 5/7 saying I owed money to Confirmatrix Lab (checked and it went out of business) for a doctor I visited in 2014.

I'll spare all the details of the attitude, unprofessionalism, shady phone calls for now so I can just get to the point.

Also got a letter from Alpha Recovery Corp (I guess they took over Confirmatrix) saying I have an outstanding balance. I was able to extract some information from the first phone call (she spelled the doctors name wrong but I found the doctor) and told me the service date. I called the doctors office multiple times and the line has been disconnected. I then called my insurance and they told me that the lab work was fully covered since it was in network and an electronic payment was made that was never cashed. I asked her to send me proof of that and she said it should be faxed over in about 5 days.

Until then I filled out a debt verification letter I found from online and going to mail them that today. Am I handling this properly? I am really lost and don't know how to handle this situation so I appreciate any advice or support.

Edit: the letter they sent me saying the money I owe has a creditors name on it. I addressed the letter to Alpha Corp for the debt verification since they're the collection agency. Is that right?

Threatened to be sued for Malicious Intent to Defraud

    Posted: 09 May 2018 11:07 AM PDT

I've been living in PA for about 6 years now, originally from Tennessee, and I've recently received a phone call from a process server saying that they received documentation from professional legal services saying they are going to sue me for Malicious Intent to Defraud a company (the company being a store in Tennessee) for 2k, they are planing on getting a judgement against me (may 15th?) and garnishing my wages. I can settle with them today for $1200.

I obviously declined, I have no idea what they are talking about. But they did have my social security number. They threw out some case number which I've spend some time trying to crawl through PA dockets to find but seems to mean nothing (maybe their internal case number?)

I got another call today from professional legal services saying they would like to settle before heading into pre-litigation.

I've received no documents pertaining to this at all. Is this a scam? It sounds quite real. I also have not been served.

How can I even hire an attorney if I know nothing about who is trying to sue me or why?

[MA] Wondering if their is any kind of legal action a few students and I can take against a trashy pseudo school (Atlantic Union College)

    Posted: 08 May 2018 07:47 PM PDT

So, a couple of years ago (back in 2015 specifically), my sweet old Grandmother caught wind of an opportunity in the form of a new College starting up in Massachusetts which, much to her delight, was affiliated with her church (The Seventh-day Adventist Church). Being the kindly old woman she was, she very excitedly told me that this was an opportunity for me to finally make something of myself for a relatively low price which she said she would help me pay for(didn't end up getting help, alzheimer's sucks). I, having nothing better to do with my time, decided I'd go, but not before dragging my good friend /u/blackjacko into it. Fast forward a few months and my friend and I are dropped off in bumfuck(Lancaster), Massachusetts, in front of a pretty small campus with this squirrely looking dude named Chris greeting us. The guy then pulls us into his office and starts talking about the school and how much of an opportunity it is for us and how this is the start of something great. I don't want to bore you with the specifics so to summarize, he says that it used to be a big Adventist College and they got shut down for some funds related stuff but that they're dedicated to starting anew and some other junk, he also says that we are their first two students and that classes(and by extension the other students) weren't going to start for another 3 weeks. Now, this wasn't exactly a big deal for me as I was (and still am) no stranger to having an abundance of free time; but what was a bit of a problem for me was when I was informed that the place we were staying at didn't have running water or Air Conditioning and did have a shitload of roaches and mice. Now, we were told that all of the dorm's problems would be sorted out before classes started and we were allowed to use one of the showers in the staff building (which unfortunately was located all the way on the other side of the property) but it was still a hell of a lot to deal with. Plus, we weren't given keys to the staff building so we literally had to call the admissions guy (Chris) and hope he was around to let us in. Ended up doing a fair amount of pissing outside in the middle of the night but we endured. 3 weeks eventually go by and the other students show up but nowhere near the amount Chris had been telling us there would be. Chris said there would be about 100 students on campus by the start of classes but there only ended up being 10 total.

Bunch of other stuff ended up happening including this stuff https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/3n0kqb/macan_the_school_legally_do_any_of_this/ also we were forced to attend church

also Chris kept promising the school would be accredited and that we'd have credits for the classes we took (but that never ended up happening) and he assured that if they didn't get accredited we could just transfer our credits over to Andrew's another Seventh-Day Adventist College they were affiliated with (also didn't end up happening)

also the students who got jobs on campus (including me) had 80% of their wages sapped and returned to the school we were told we'd either sign the thing that let them do it or we couldn't work.

also they had a drug problem in the school where some of the students were selling to the local middle schoolers but when some of the students informed the school about it and how they should do something about it, they fired him

also this guy we befriended who had been working there for a bit was told that unless he signed up for classes at the school they'd fire him

also as far as two years back the vice president of the school said that he realized the school was falling apart and didn't have much time left but the school continued to recruit students while continuing to lie to them about how accreditation was right around the corner and how they'd be fine

needless to say, by the end of year 1 my friend and I were already out of there

though we're still being hounded by collections even though the school has already publicly announced it's shutting down a lot of it's education stuff

also some other students apparently made a change petition which is here: https://www.change.org/p/atlantic-union-conference-auc-give-back-our-money

so what do we do exactly here? is there some kind of legal action we can take against the school for so thoroughly entrenching the students in their bullshit?

Is my new wife able to insure my daughter from a previous relationship?

    Posted: 09 May 2018 07:57 AM PDT

    Oklahoma

my current wife's insurance has no problem covering my daughter. However, in the custody arrangement between me and my ex, I have agreed to cover my daughter's insurance. My insurance at work is outrageous and my current wife's is very cheap. Does the court care who is covering my daughter (my current wife or myself) as long as she's covered?
