We encourage all our visitors to ask those investing related questions they were always too afraid to ask.

The members of /r/investing are here to answer and educate!

NOTE If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or anything similar. There is no single answer to this question, but we will also need A LOT MORE information if we are to give some sort of answer

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive girlfriend? (not really an asset)
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Be aware that these answers are just opinions of Redditors and should be used as a starting point for your research. You should strongly consider seeing a registered financial rep before making any financial decisions!

Interesting note on recent GDP - Consumer spending dropped significantly YOY. Not a great long term sign.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 08:46 AM PDT

    https://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-economy-grows-at-2-3-rate-in-first-quarter-1524832800

I found this article rather interesting today. As most know, the GDP recently beat estimates, although still slowed month over month. While a good gdp is never bad, slowing rate of change is a bigger concern. Looking into this article however has me a little more concerned about something else, which plays into a lot of my other general thoughts on the economy right now.

Consumer Spending Dropping and Inventories Rising?

Consumer spending dropped off a cliff. That's a problem since consumer spending largely drives the economy. Given, consumer spending on services is still strong, but consumer spending on goods is not ideal. The interesting thing here is that the GDP didn't drop because inventories rose significantly, signaling that a lot of the GDP was driven by increased business spending activity, partially a result of the tax cuts.

The issue here, is that inventories are at least somewhat dependent on consumer spending. If consumer spending continues to stay low, then businesses will stop adding to their inventories for obvious reasons, and that component which is keeping GDP high will drop out. I assume that the inventory spending was largely in anticipation of a boom in consumer spending after tax cuts were put into place.

Either way, there is clearly a lot more complexity here, so take this at least somewhat with a grain of salt, but I found this worth sharing for anyone here who doesn't necessarily have the rosiest forward picture of the economy right now.

Edit for Clarification: The consumer data I reference is a little more than half way down in the chart. You'll notice a big drop off in consumer goods spending (not services) compared to last year's averages. This is also a rate of contribution to GDP, so I should have worded the title here better.

Trump Postpones Steel Tariff Decision for EU, Other U.S. Allies. Decision postponed until June 1; countries were granted temporary exemptions

    https://www.wsj.com/articles/trump-postpones-steel-tariff-decision-for-eu-other-u-s-allies-1525130978

The White House said broad tariffs of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminum—already in effect against China, Russia, Japan and others—won't take effect for the EU Tuesday as previously planned. Instead, Europe will have an additional month to keep talking with the U.S. about a new pact to avoid the tariffs.

    So many conflicting views

Then it was low pe companies are good, except that many low pe companies are at risk for bankruptcy. Now seth klarman wrote that he thought indexing would be a fad!

    What is book value?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 02:18 PM PDT

Trying to understand this quote about Barclays and Staley: "With the stock trading at about two-thirds of the book value of the company's assets, they're betting its valuation can improve."

I assume it means the value of the assets held by Barclays, but want to confirm and have context.

    Thanks!

    First time buying

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 09:05 PM PDT

I have 70k sitting in my savings account. I know I should have started investing a long time ago. I opened up a schwab account and my goal is to just put it into SWPPX (mutual fund? index fund?) and let it grow. All I have to do is type in the amount of money and hit "confirm" but it scares me to death moving so much money around and I all of this investing stuff is so complex.

I actually put in an order for $100 without having funds in my schwab account. The schwab guy I chatted with said if I dont have the funds, they have the right to sell it or something. I just cancelled the order. Is this going to cost me money to cancel? I dont know why I put in that order. Im so nervous.

I put in an online transfer request for 5k and it should be in my brokerage account after a few days. After that I guess I'll just buy some SWPPX? Is that it?

ELI5 How can stock prices outgain US and global GDP growth long term while not ballooning PE?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 10:45 AM PDT

    With a bit of googling:

    1. S&P 500 growth/stock market growth real return over the last 100 years is around 6.5%
    2. Real global GDP growth has been around 4% https://www.forbes.com/sites/rickferri/2012/10/25/a-second-look-at-pe-ratios-part-ii/#2b2ae6328027
    3. Corporate profits have generally tracked long term with global GDP growth.
    4. Current PE ratio is higher than usual, but not 2.5% a year over 50 years high (24 current vs 16 average)

I'm not trying to be the smartest guy in the room, but I was doing some research to try and understand if, long term, stocks are fundamentally overvalued. What I instead found was math that just didn't fundamentally make sense to me (see above). What am I missing? Why are the PE ratios not astronomical with that kind of disconnect between GDP growth and stock returns? Also, on a related note to my original query, how does the math work out that stock returns can forever be higher than GDP growth?

Want to become a Macro Trader

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 11:04 PM PDT

    Hi r/Investing,

Would like some advice where to begin to learn macro trading. I'm very interested in world affairs and their impact on markets – and have been for a long time.

I'm specifically interested in FX and commodities, but would like to trade any instrument reactive to geopolitical / geoeconomic developments.

I found a quote below while researching:

"I will trade anything, I'm totally diversified and my views have nothing to do with what, say, the ECB is doing," he said. "I'd go for Zambian T-bills, for example, keep an eye on beer consumption in Nigeria and the investment opportunities it presents or look to buy shares in a Turkish glass company after an earthquake." I don't want to get too far ahead. But how does one get access to invest in diverse things such as Zambian treasury bills or Turkish glass companies?

What websites provide a good basis to learn to develop such a trading technique? BabyPips is one. I'm also making my way through Khan Academy videos about 'Finance and Capital Markets'.

    Any other suggestions?

    Thank you.

Investing in a 401k vs investing in a standard portfolio vs IRA

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 10:54 PM PDT

I know there are penalties from withdrawing early in a 401k and IRA, but at some point doesn't it become preferable to just take the funds out early if needed?

I believe you can actively manage your own 401k and IRA right?

For example, lets say I wanted to start a business at 40. I start working at 22 and get a 401k with employer matching, and actively trade in the 401k until im 40 then pull funds. Would that be better than not contributing at all, keeping your own money and making the same trades until 40? You pay a lot more taxes this way. I know you pay taxes after pulling funds. What about with an IRA where you can contribute yourself. Its essentially the same question as the 401k minus the employer matching.

Assuming the business is successful, this would be a wise investment for 10x return. (Again we're just hypothesizing). So please don't make the argument to not touch the retirement fund at all.

Sorry if this seems incoherent. The main concept is trading in a tax free portfolio that can be drawn before im ancient. Feel free to just make blanket statements with general information.

    Question on negative operating income

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 06:47 AM PDT

I am looking at the WDAY income statement and noticed they are operating at a loss. I'm in the industry and many see them as successful growing cloud software company. I understand the industry enough to know that there is high early investment in setting up a cloud infrastructure and revenue follows but I would expect the losses decreasing over time. Can someone explain why that would make the stock attractive?

What will happen to Aercorp if a recession hits?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 09:35 PM PDT

I am using a strategy where I copy my favorite value investors, and Aercap shares is at the top of my buy list right now according to my strategy.

However, I am worried about what would happen to the company if a recession hits, since they almost went bankrupt last recession.

Are they doing things differently to protect themselves? Will downside risk be lower this time?

Merrill Edge (Free trades) vs Schwab?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 10:42 AM PDT

Is it better to go with Merrill Edge and get 30-100 free trades/month after acquiring 50-100k in assets or go with Schwab and get the free ETF's but always pay $5 commission on all other trades?

I plan on mainly investing long term but also occasionally trading other securities (not day trading by any means).

What do you guys think is the better option? I already use Bank of America and would probably be eligible for the 30 free trades within a few years.

    Thanks

Buying Stocks In Companies That Are About To Be Bought.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 08:40 AM PDT

I was wondering if I could buy stocks of companies that are about to be purchased to make money.

So, lets say one company's stock is sitting at $10. Another company comes along and says "we will buy your company for $15 a share." Could I buy the companies stock at $10 in hopes that they will be purchased for $15?

Or, is that not how it works?

Hey everyone! First time poster here- Since i started in this business I've always had financial news playing in the background of my office while I work. I'd like to simply stream financial news online all day in a way that isn't horrible/completely biased. (why pay for cable/satellite to play one channel constantly)

What are your preferred online streaming news sources? Open to tickers/other services, but mostly interested in a good narrative throughout the day. Is it wishful thinking to hope for something Free? Thanks everyone!
