Friend lost mobile home insurance because trailer has a "basement"

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 04:16 PM PDT

Posted this to r/legaladvice and was recommended to post here.

My friend just got a notice telling her that her mobile home insurance is being cancelled because she has a basement. The mobile home is on a hill and the "basement" they speak of is the foundation for the back half of the trailer, which she uses as storage for her lawn mower and a few other things. It has no electricity or any other amenities, it is just a brick walled room the back part of the home sits on. She has been paying for this insurance since 2012. We are wondering, since they claim they can't insure it because of said basement, had she ever had to file a claim would they have had to pay out? And if they would not have had to pay, is she entitled to any refund for the years she has payed? She's really thrown off by this as if it's uninsurable to them, why did they never say anything for the past 6 years she has paid insurance when they had pictures of the home and should have obviously known there was a "basement". This is in Iowa.

Body shop holding car hostage while arguing with insurance over payment

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 08:53 AM PDT

Almost 2 months ago my fiancé's car was backed into while parked which resulted in a totally caved in passenger door. Luckily the woman left her number and filed a claim with her insurance company so we could get the car fixed. We brought it into a body shop who gave us an estimate to repair the door which came out to around $2300. They sent the estimate to the woman's insurance company and they sent us a check for that amount. Once the body shop started repairing the door however, they realized they needed to completely replace the door. They got an adjuster from the insurance company to come look at the door and the adjuster approved the repairs and told the mechanic to make them. So the body shop went ahead and did the work but never asked for our approval to make them. Now however, the insurance company is refusing to pay for the "supplemental" $600 more these repairs cost beyond the initial estimate which has resulted in my fiancé's car being held "hostage" by the body shop until the insurance approves the new amount and sends a check for the difference. They have had the car for over a month now. What do we do?

Geico Refusing to remove driver from policy

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 09:40 AM PDT

Hi everyone, Quick overview. I have 3 drivers on my policy. My dad, my sister and me.

My sister moved out a year ago and I forgot to remove her from my policy. I attempted to do so recently, I provided proof of her new address using her new lease and paystub. Geico replied stating they will only accept proof of new car insurance to remove her. She does not have a car anymore.

How do I get her removed? She's currently affecting my rates by about 40%. How can they expect me to provide something she does not have?

    Question regarding joint car insurance

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 08:20 PM PDT

My girlfriend would like to make me a joint person on her car insurance because it will be cheaper for her. I also drive her car here and there. My question is will this anyway effect me with insurance on one of my cars in the future? She has a few marks against her for tickets and an accident and my record is spotless. I don't know if it's better to be off it for me personally or if it is OK and I'm just overreacting. If she were to get in an accident would it effect me or my license from being on joint account? (Other than probably raising our insurance) Thank You in advance.

    Car accident, I have questions.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 01:51 PM PDT

I had an accident with a curb about a month ago, I thought there wasn't that much damage, I was just going to handle it myself but when I finally got estimates I realized it was going to be much more than 1000 dollars.

I'm in California, am I going to have any issues since the accident occurred over 10 days ago? I know that it would really be an issue if there was another car involved and I didn't report it in time but since it was just my car and a curb do I have to worry about anything, other than the higher insurance rates that is.

Coverage for Me for Actions of Nanny.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 12:15 PM PDT

Currently insured with Farmers and have e-mails from our agent confirming coverage for the below issues (but Farmers rates have been going up A LOT - and I worry about them customer-service wise). I just got off the phone with Amica and was very disappointed in their customer service over the phone (the woman kept arguing with my that I could not get sued in the below situations, rather than answering my question).

Situation is that we have a nanny that does NOT live with us, but takes care of our son at our house 40 hours a week (an employee). She will periodically drive our son places in her own car (she cannot drive either of our cars, because my wife and I both drive a manual transmission and she does not know how to drive a stick).

I want to confirm I have some insurance in some form that covers these approximate situations: 1. Situations where my home is negligently maintained and the nanny hurts herself (in excess or separate from worker's compensation); and 2. Nanny is driving her car (which has commercial use now) and gets in an accident, but does not have enough insurance to cover the damages and I am sued since she was acting as my employee at the time.

Farmers has told me that I'm covered in both of those situations via renters & auto policy; Amica simply argued that I could not be sued in those situations (I cannot stress enough how disappointed I was with my Amica experience after reading about them on here and bogleheads).

Mostly, I'm more interested in coverage for the car situation, but it almost seems like we're going to have to buy a non-stick car and list her as a named insured on our policy?

EDIT: I guess, since this is a forum of insurance professionals, I am asking these questions: (1) Is there a term for the type of insurance I'm looking for here and I just don't know the name? Like, do I need to be saying a specific term is what I want or something? (2) Or is what I'm asking for just batcrap crazy and doesn't exist?

[CO] I am studying for my insurance license

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 09:16 AM PDT

I am studying for my insurance license, and my employment with an independent firm is contingent upon passing. I am about 50% of the way through the P&C material on ExamFX but holy heck do I feel lost. I'm trying to just get through the practice questions and exams to keep taking the practice exams until I am blue in the face.

I additionally have the P&C app and so far have gotten 60-70+% on each section I test myself on - Paid $2.99 for that, and I think it was well worth it. I sent my boss an email last night telling him I would be ready to take the P&C test Friday.

Any advice beyond this? I am taking P&C first, and then focusing on Life and Health. My boss said this would be the easiest thing to do because you can then just focus on the task at hand. I was offered the job two weeks ago tomorrow and had a friend in town last weekend so I wasn't able to fully commit to a studying routine - He was aware of having company in town when I got the job. It took me a really long time to get through Dwelling/HO policy and also Auto. Every time I complete a chapter in one section, I switch over from Property to Casualty etc just to keep up the pace, and then read the personal lines stuff and quiz in that just to keep my courses on track together.

Just feeling lost and worried, and want to pass on my first go. I also want it to stick. Any advice would be awesome.

Update:test is Tuesday may 8 at 12:30 pm

    General dwelling coverage for condo

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 09:10 AM PDT

So I initially went with what dwelling coverage my agent recommended, but after calling for a separate issue, the new agent insisted I was underinsured. As my condo policy has a walls in coverage, what is a good percentage of the total home value to go by? It's a 1300 SQ ft condo, 2 bed 1.5 bath. Nothing at all fancy, standard toilets, sinks, cabinets, etc. Basically what you'd expect for any standard cheap build. I want to be covered, but don't want to be taken advantage of. Value of condo is $90,000.

    Fender bender in parking lot

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 03:05 PM PDT

I was just in an accident in a parking lot of a convenience store. I looked around before I reversed, proceeded to reverse while checking my back up camera and mirrors. Half way thru my maneuver, I hear a crunch then a honk.

A lady was pulling into the spot to my left as I was pulling out. My front driver's side corner hit her passengers side front corner. I took pics and it clearly shows my car way past the yellow line into her spot as I was backing up.

The police officer only made a report and told us to call our insurance to sort it out.

Who do you think will be found at fault? She came out of nowhere because I didn't see her car at all BEFORE I backed up.

Sr22 on new policy so my current one doesn’t find out

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 02:44 PM PDT

Can I take out a cheap liability policy with sr22 so that I can keep my rates with Allstate the same? I would have two policies. Would Allstate find out anyway? Is this legal?

Does it make sense to get more expensive plan?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 09:41 AM PDT

Hi everybody, I will be soon starting to work for a company which provides me with two options for a health plan, a standard and an advanced plan.

I am however confused with the actual benefits of the advanced plan. The standard monthly premium is at $33 and advanced at $100.

The standard offers an annual deductible of $1500, before the insurance kicks in with some co-payus, until the max out of pocket of $2300 is reached . This means that, on a year the least I might pay will be $360 just for premium, and at most $2660.

The advanced offers a deductible of $1700, which i also the max out-of-pocket. This means that with this plan, the least I would pay is $1200 from the premium, and the max $2900. It doesn't seem like there's any other difference between the plans. So why would anyone consider the advanced plan, if it's cheaper both if I never use it, or if I max it out in a year. Am i missing something?

Switching employers, does deductible carry over?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 12:57 PM PDT

I'm looking at switching employers, which will obviously mean switching health plans. I've reached my $600 deductible under the current plan this year. Will that $600 carry over to the new plan, or will I have to start from zero?

Rear ended, unsure of total loss, wanting a loss for GAP insurance to take effect. How do I do it?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 06:50 AM PDT

I have a 2017 VW GTI Sport DSG, and this past Saturday I was in a three-way car accident, and ended up rear ended with my hatch caved in along with a lot of other damage to the rear. The car is still drive-able but now there is a ticking/squeaking sound coming from the front, and the entire rear end needs to be replaced / repaired.

My situation is unique because I have a ton of negative equity in this car due to my stupid decisions in car buying in the past, AND I am trying to get a clean slate with a possible total loss of my vehicle, and have GAP insurance cover the rest, which should be around $30,000 of remaining loan.

I am mainly asking if anybody has ever had any experience in a situation like this, or has ever had a borderline totaled vehicle in an insurance claim, and what that experience was like. I have not been able to find anything similar to my situation on the internet or in the several reddit threads I've sifted through. Any and all advice or personal stories would help a ton for reference!

    First Settlement Offer

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 03:11 PM PDT

Well after like two months of waiting (post-them receiving all bills) my first settlement offer came in.

They've agreed to pay all medical bills at $4,401 with $2,000 additionally for a settlement offer of 6401.

Is this a reasonable first offer? Should I request more? No permanent injury; hospital bills were about 1500; Physical therapy was about 2500.

Property coverage was already settled (totaled) previously.

First Not-At-Fault claim, new car, advice?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 09:35 AM PDT

    I'm with economical (in Canada),

This is my first claim, the car is <500km and someone hit it in a parking lot.

I filed a Hit and run with the cops, and since the bumper/front lip was cracked, i filed a claim. The body shop quoted me 2300$ for the damage.

    I have a few questions:

    1. Economical told me i have the right to a rental during the days my car is being repaired or they can give me cash. I can't figure out if it makes a difference if I either take the cash/rental/or nothing. Does anybody know? I'm thinking of taking the cash and putting it towards my deductible as I don't drive to work anyways.

    2. I'm also trying to figure out of my insurance is going to go up lol...

I gave my broker a call and I'm waiting on a call back.

So where are all the StateFarm business insurance refugees going?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 02:13 PM PDT

StateFarm cancelled lotsa peoples business insurance, we've been to no less than 5 recommended brokers from friends, and even one by the SF agent, and they all say "yeah this is easy, we'll call you in a day or two"... and they never call back, ever. We see them face to face and get them all the docs and they fuck around.

Where can I find someone serious?

Is it necessary to update academic information each semester for State Farm?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 08:08 AM PDT

I currently have car insurance with state farm. When I got the insurance I qualified for the good student discount which is to have a GPA above a 3.0, my GPA is now just below that. They have called me several times asking me to come in to go over "policy updates". Do I need to do this or are they just trying to get more money out of me?
