NextGenVest: Free Financial Advising for Students Posted: 30 Apr 2018 07:17 AM PDT Hello, all! I'm the new product manager for NextGenVest, an organization that's trying to combat the predatory mechanisms of banks + student loans by equipping students with the advice and information they need to make the best decisions for their financial futures. It's a huge realm of problems, so I'm looking for some guidance on where we could focus next. All input and advice are welcome! We actually do all of these now, but I want to figure out what students need help with the most, so we can put it front and center, as a lot of students we speak to are overwhelmed, don't have the time to navigate this world, and don't know where to start. Some ideas: -Appeal letters : you can actually negotiate your tuition -Credit : what it is, how to build it, why it matters for your loans -Explanations and guidance through what loans to take out and from where, there are a billion options and they're all complex -Part time jobs: should I take it or should I just get another loan Seriously, any advice/input/personal anecdotes are helpful, I want to build a product that actually reflects the needs of my users. Oh, and you can check us out here: www.nextgenvest.com [link] [comments] |
Low paying job with 3 year forgiveness or try and get a job that's mid-high pay and pay off loans Posted: 30 Apr 2018 04:47 PM PDT Hey, I was offered a job for about 15k less a year than could be market rate for my job as a child/family therapist. The job comes with up to 65k in loan forgiveness after 3 years of service. I currently have 58k in student loans. Things to consider: 1. The low paying job sounds like a good fit 2. I know I could land a higher paying job within a few months Thanks for any input or financial knowledge. [link] [comments] |
Wasn't approved for parent plus loan, not sure what to do next. Posted: 30 Apr 2018 10:13 AM PDT I am a current university student and have completed one semester of university to far. My mother and I took out the direct parent plus loan for that first semester with no problem. I was applying for a loan for summer semesters and my mom got denied. Its only been about 4-5 monthes since we had taken out the first one with no major credit changes. She bought a house cash but that wonuldn't affect credit. I don't have the option of an endorser and we don't really fit under any of the extenuating circumstances. What are my options? where do I go from here? Any insight on why this would be happening or a way to fix it would be greatly appreciated. Edit: thanks for everyone who has responded [link] [comments] |

Navient says I'm behind on private loan payment, but I'm not Posted: 30 Apr 2018 04:03 PM PDT I've been getting emails from a Mr Tom Dodd from Navient, stating that I'm behind on my payment for my private loans with them. The problem is that's not true; I made my payment for this month just the other day. It's reflected on my account, and I even called and got a confirmation from one of the customer services refs. The person I spoke with even said it seemed 'alarming' that I would even be getting this email in the first place. Is this a case of someone at Navient trying to force more money out of me by lying about my payment? Has anyone else ever got an email from a Tom Dodd before with this same issue? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Apr 2018 03:34 PM PDT My credit isn't great. It's at about 600. My mom makes over $100k a year from the stock market. Will I be able to get approved for a 60k loan to pay for my graduate school tuition if she co-signs? Despite the fact I have debt? [link] [comments] |
I tried to get all my federal loans consolidated Posted: 30 Apr 2018 10:46 AM PDT I tried to change the servicer to Nelnet, but for some reason, my federal loan under Navient could not be consolidated because according to the email I received from Nelnet, it was not "guaranteed". I thought it was because that's what ECMC, the guarantor of my federal loan with Navient told me it was. What should I do? I don't want to give another dime to Navient and would rather have Nelnet as my servicer from now on. [link] [comments] |
What does this mean? This is for a university I'm applying for Posted: 30 Apr 2018 09:01 AM PDT I understand that the regular course contract dates of six and twelve months are reduced to four and eight months for a full-time student receiving financial aid. Required Field [link] [comments] |
Help- In School Deferment with Navient. 4 months in and they are asking for payment Posted: 30 Apr 2018 08:59 AM PDT Hey guys, I need a little advice. I got my bachelors degree which I received in 2014 and have been paying on my student loans with Sallie Mae/Navient since then until this January (2018). I am now back in college until 2019 for a condensed certification program for medical billing/coding. The last few months, I have owed nothing on my private loans. I took me weeks of paperwork and calls to finally get Navient to do their jobs and process my in-school deferment - now they are saying I owe 25$ per loan. I have 4 loans total so $100/month. Out of no where, can they just do that? What are my options? EDIT: They all say Loan Status: In-School Deferment Yet, one of the four loans says zero due while the other three have 25$ per loan. Posted: 30 Apr 2018 04:13 AM PDT Hello everyone. I haven't made the best choices in life, and the following post will reflect that. I made an anonymous account just to post this, because my student loans are a depressing and embarrassing part of my life. Any help would be so much appreciated. If I need to clarify anything, or you have more questions, please let me know. The tl;dr is at the bottom, if you'd like to pass on the rambling wall of text. I have 2 Bachelors degrees, which were financed almost exclusively by student loans. The time had come for me to repay them, but rather than deal with them, I chose to ignore them. I wish I could say that I was kidding. Of course, I defaulted on them, hard. I started a Master's program that I decided to take a break from because I wanted to find a career, rather than just working at odd jobs. I currently work at a retail pharmacy as a certified pharmacy tech, and I will be making at the most $24k per year. I am searching for other jobs, but don't know where to start looking for jobs pertaining to my degrees. I had huge plans for my future which did not pan out, and my college/career situation has been the reason for a lot of depression and angst. The time has come for me to start paying again, and I don't know where to start. I know that there are scams out there, I know that there are repayment options, but there are so many choices and I'm honestly terrified and overwhelmed. In the midst of this clusterfuck, I had to file bankruptcy. I was being sued by someone else for money I didn't have, which was the reason for that. Surprisingly, I have been on top of my requirements for that, and I am just waiting on the final statement or whatever saying that my bankruptcy has been approved/denied. I live with my mother, and she has been unreasonably kind and benevolent to me, so the only bills I pay is $120 for the cell phone bill which my mother, brother and I share, and $135 for vehicle insurance. I know that what I have to repay is in the neighborhood of $60k. I would like to start a Masters program or restart the one that I did, but I want to do it once I have my financial ducks in a row. I'm attempting to be responsible, or something like that. I live in TN, if that makes a difference. Thank you all so much in advance for any help, tips, opinions, anything at all :) Tl;dr: $60k in loans, max of $24k job currently (hourly pay). Defaulted before, want to take responsibility for loans, don't know where to start. [link] [comments] |
Student loans for international schools Posted: 30 Apr 2018 02:58 AM PDT Does anyone know of any student loans geared towards American students studying abroad? I am working towards a Master's degree at a university in Germany and I'm looking for some additional funding. I am not able to get a loan through German channels as I am not a citizen and I am having trouble finding a source in the States... Any advice you might have is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
