Graduating medical school - Need help with plan to pay off loans

    Posted: 02 May 2018 06:58 PM PDT

Hello and thank you all in advance or taking a look at my situation and offering your advice. As stated, I am graduating medical school next month and am looking to develop a plan to tackle my student loans. Here is the breakdown of my loans:

    Direct stafford unsubsidized - $185,555 average interest 5.67% Grad plus - $48,543 average interest 6.64% Parent plus - $37,269 average interest 7.57% Perkins - $20,000 average interest 5% Direct stafford subsidized - $19,000 average interest 3.74%

I will be starting residency in June and will make ~$55,000 per year for the next 3 years. I will be married so our combined income would be ~$110,000. After residency, my projected salary would be ~$225,000 and a combined family income of $275,000.

My first question is should I consolidate my loans after my grace period ends 6 months into residency? And if so, can the parent plus loans be switched to my name and consolidated to qualify for the income based repayment plans?

Next question is about the payment models. Our primary goals of repayment are to pay off the loans as quickly as possible. Based on my knowledge so far, I believe selecting REPAYE during residency will be the best choice for us to take advantage of the interest subsidy. My question comes with what to do after residency. Do I refinance and continue to live off a resident salary (with a slight bump) until it is all paid off? Do I stay on REPAYE and hope that PSLF stays active? Or is there another option that you all would recommend? I do not want to drag out my loans for 20 years to take advantage of the REPAYE/PAYE forgiveness.

Any and all advice would be much appreciated. Again, thank you all for your help and please let me know if there is any more information that I can provide.

Issues with financial aid at my school. Need advice badly.

    Posted: 02 May 2018 07:01 PM PDT

So some backstory, I lived in Oklahoma and from fall of 2004-spring 2006, I went to 2 different universities and got financial aid. I couldn't cut it in college and ended up joining the workforce. I moved down to TX end of 2009 so my girlfriend could be near her family. I started going to the college I go to now Spring 2015. In Fall of 2016 I graduated with an Associates of Science in Computer Science. I didn't really feel like it was my field to be in, so I did a change of major when I graduated to go into Computer Maintenance Technology (this is what the school said to do). We just finished our Spring 2018 courses, and next week is the start of Summer 2018. At 5 pm my time I got a call stating I have hit my maximum hours and that I need to go in and fill out a form to make sure I can go to school in the summer. After filling out the form, I was told financial aid won't cover me, and because of financial aid not covering me, my student loans are not allowed to be used and I lose my work study position, which is my only job right now. The reasoning behind this is that all of my courses from the school I am in now, plus the schools in 04-06, are being considered for this Computer Maintenance Technology degree. The lady that I spoke to said there is nothing that I can do, and to have a nice day....

Any advice? Anything at all would be appreciated.

Edit: Also real quick, this has nothing to do with my grades/GPA. I have had 1 dropped class back in Spring 2015 (6 allowed over all college lifetime per my school) and I have maintained A's/B's and sitting at a 3.41 GPA overall.

Will have to take out ~$200k, Need Help

    Posted: 02 May 2018 01:52 PM PDT

    Hey there,

So I'm in a fucking disaster. I'm going to a school this fall as a first year studying for a BS in Computer Science.

The school is one of the top 50 in the country for Computer Science, however I got completely fucked by the FA department (I've already talked to them, no help was offered) What they do offer is a Federal PLUS loan and unsubsidized loan. Nevertheless, my parents urged me to go, affirming me price isn't a big deal to them and they'd provide assistance.

Tuition is about $50k a year, and I just learned from my parents that none of the banks they deal with would offer any type of loan to them. They put it on me now to find a way to secure a loan.

I desperately need assistance. I know I'm fucked in my current position. I'm considering looking into private loans, but those seem to be a cesspool of problems.

What should I do? Are there any resources I can look into? Any form of help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Anyone here use an app like Pickpocket?

    Posted: 02 May 2018 06:21 PM PDT

Not affiliated in any way, just saw an ad on Facebook for it and it sparked my interest. The way it works is you hook up your spending and loan accounts, and it will charge you 10% of every purchase and apply it to the loan. This amount can be adjusted up or down depending.

    Comments?

What are interest rates you guys at? I'll show you mine if you show me yours?

    Posted: 02 May 2018 09:22 PM PDT

I have no clue what market interest rates are at right now. I don't even know if I am able to consolidate or what my options. I thought I would try and get your advice since whenever I call a company, I don't trust them to give me sound advice.

    So here's what I got:

    3.28% $2,383.84 3.28% $3,586.32 6.8% $3,944.25 6.8% $1,991.74 3.28% $211.52 6.8% $2,588.92 6.8% $2,280.00 6.8% $1,227.18 All of them are FFELP type loans and I haven't even questioned if I could get a better rate on these.

    Are these rates normal?
How can I get better rates? Can anyone PM me with someone that offers lower rates? Can I consolidate- How? Any advice appreciated!

Givling released a new version of their app today!

    Posted: 02 May 2018 02:48 PM PDT

For those of us who haven't heard, Givling is a trivia app that crowdfunds student loan debt with ad revenue and people playing to pay the game more often (which I never have). I've been playing for over a year, and they've picked up a ton of momentum in that time, from taking months to pay off a 24,000 loan to paying off about a 50,000 loan per month.

And now, they've changed the rules of the app, so the more you play, the higher on the list you go to get your loan funded! I've put a negligible amount of money in and I'm still pretty close to the top 100 they released today :)

They also increased the weekly cash prize for trivia so you're playing for several hundred dollars, so there's reason to play even if you're far away from the top of the leaderboard.

Anyway, if anyone would like to join, my Invite code is SP963588. The app is available on iOS and Android, and also on the web. Any questions, feel free to ask!!

Fedloan Issues... need Obudsman or other help

    Posted: 02 May 2018 06:25 PM PDT

    Hi,

I have been having issues getting a correct payment counts for PSLF on my Fedloan account for my four student loans. First off, I have a direct loan, am making income-based payments, work for a school district and have been sending in annual employment recertification forms. I have been trying to get the correct payment count for the past year. My previous request for payment recount only requested for one loan count to be resolved. It was the only loan with an incorrect PSLF payment count. Now ALL OF THE REST of the loans have an incorrect count. These incorrect payment counts are around 20 payments off of my count of payments. Each time I call Fedloan they say the previous person messed up and I will just have to wait. Has anyone had any problem getting issues resolved with Fedloan? Have you used the obudsman to correct the issue? How does that work?

    Thanks for your help. :)

    CitizensOne Refinance Question.

    Posted: 02 May 2018 05:32 PM PDT

Hi all, I've recently refinanced my Sallie mae student loans to CitizensOne refinance program. I received an e-mail saying that Firstmark Services will be managing my repayment? Is this normal?

Pissed I cannot be a co-signer, where else to get student loan?

    Posted: 02 May 2018 11:47 AM PDT

So me and my bf are both foreign immigrants living in nyc. Both of us don't have any other immediate family members in the US. I have a full time job in finance, and a credit score above 800, but I'm still in my employment-based green card application process and will need another 3-4 years to complete. My bf has been naturalized as a US citizen.

After tremendous efforts, he's been accepted into a competitive medical profession school: one-year program that begins this fall. He quits his current job and submitted federal & state student loan application, which only covers about 20% of tuitions and fees. Originally we were planning to just get private student loans for the rest tuitions, and I'll be his co-signer. But Sallie Mae just informed us that only US Citizens or green card holders can be a co-signer so I'm not qualified, and they declined my bf's individual application without a co-signer as he has limited credit history.

This is really f**ked up as it messed up our important life and career plans. My cash is very tight as I'm paying a mortgage. Both of our families in our home countries don't have enough sources to come up with the rest balance, and we don't know any citizen or GC holder here that is appropriate to be asked as a co-signer. We called couple other student loan providers such as Wells Fargo and Suntrust, but it looks like the co-signer status rule is similar and strict.

We are at a loss what's the next step. Please reddit community and friends here, are there any other sources or ideas that we could possibly get student loans or funds at all? Any info or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

Nelnet - Paid off two loan groups over two months ago...Still haven't recieved a letter stating I paid it off?

    Posted: 02 May 2018 08:34 AM PDT

Those groups don't appear on my account anymore - they are paid off. I know it's different for every loan service group.

For example it took Well's Fargo maybe 3 weeks to mail me my letter. It took my university over 2 months for them to send my letter from paying off a Perkins Loan. At what point should I call Nelnet? These groups were paid off over two months ago.

They only have a few select degrees, but this is an option for people who want an accredited degree without the hassle of student loans.
