Elon Musk hung up on NTSB chief during call about Tesla crash probe

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-05-04/musk-hung-up-on-ntsb-chief-in-testy-april-call-about-tesla-probe

Just weeks before Elon Musk held his fractious conference call with Wall Street analysts, he hung up on Washington's top transportation accident investigator.

Robert Sumwalt, the chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, called the feisty builder of new-age cars and rockets on April 11 to tell him that blog posts by Tesla Inc. casting blame on the driver of a Model X for a fatal crash had gone too far. The NTSB had earlier warned Tesla not to make statements about the accident while it was being investigated by the board.

Sumwalt then said he was taking the unusual step of kicking the company's representatives off the investigation.

"Best I remember, he hung up on us," Sumwalt told attendees of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators' Mid-Atlantic Regional Chapter dinner Thursday. It was his first public comments on the exchange.

Trump Tax Windfall Going to Capex Way Faster Than Stock Buybacks: Bloomberg

[Discussion] SpaceX stock ($500k~) is currently >80% of my net worth, would you sell today?

    Posted: 06 May 2018 01:02 AM PDT

This is an open discussion to see what the Reddit investing community thinks about this situation. At a current market cap somewhere between $20B-$30B would you still consider SpaceX a solid investment today?

Clearly if I ask myself the basic question 'would I buy this much SpaceX stock if I had the cash instead of stock in-hand', the answer is no. Still, since this was just part of my compensation package it still doesn't feel very real to me l so I'm happy to let it ride for the next decade or so. Wonder how foolish or inspired that statement will ACTUALLY seem 10 years from now :)

Golden/Death Cross Model with Initial Claims filter that yields an average of 16% per year

    Posted: 05 May 2018 05:03 PM PDT

Here's a really simple trading model that yields an average of 16% per year:

Indicator: Buy SSO when the S&P 500 makes a "golden cross", AND… the 50sma remains above its 200sma for 5 consecutive trading days (in other words, the S&P made a "golden cross" 5 days ago).

Only SELL your SSO if both of these indicators occur:

    Indicator 1: When the S&P 500 makes a "death cross", AND…

Indicator 2: Initial Claims is above its 52 week (1 year) moving average for 8 consecutive weeks (2 months).

Advice for a college student with some extra money to invest?

    Posted: 05 May 2018 04:17 PM PDT

Hi all. I'm about to enter my last year of college, and I have a pretty good savings, enough that I feel like I should at least take a small portion of it and invest rather than letting it sit in a savings account making pennies on interest.

What is the best way to go about this? I am thinking maybe a couple hundred bucks to start, with the ability to add some more later on. I don't want to risk losing all my savings, obviously, but I'd feel okay putting a couple/few hundred out there.

    ETF? Something else? Thanks.

Hey all. I currently have 25k in my roth account unused, and am looking to get some form of income portfolio through decent yielding and steady dividend stocks. I so far own some Costco , Ford (for 5% dividend), a few shares of Amazon/apple, but am looking for something more in terms of yield.

Minimum AUM for ETFs to stay open? Or, how quickly do ETFs typically gain AUM by month?

    Posted: 05 May 2018 04:20 PM PDT

So I am looking at new ETF that fits my investment goals that has no alternatives as it is a new idea. It has only a couple million AUM as it has only be open for a little bit. Are there any ways I can determine if it has a healthy progress in gaining AUM?

Any reason to include bonds in portfolio based on these pre-conditions?

    Posted: 05 May 2018 08:56 PM PDT

    Pre-conditions:

You have a steady stream of income that will never go away.

    Your expenses remain constant.

You never need to withdraw money from your investments for any reason.

You don't need to retire for 40+ years.

If you assume these preconditions, is there any reason to have bonds?

    Daily Reading/Analysis Advice

    Posted: 05 May 2018 04:43 PM PDT

    Hello, everyone,

I am an avid lurker of this sub and am grateful for the insights shared here on a daily basis. I have been 100% invested in ETFs (From Canada and follow the Canadian Portfolio Manager blog allocations) and I have been planning to invest a small amount in individual stocks. My question is not pertaining the best stocks to buy, but would be more on how do you prepare yourself for the market day by day.

To be more specific, what readings do you do on a daily basis to find a good-valued stock, as in do you go to Bloomberg and other relevant websites?

Do you have a specific set of procedure that you follow in analyzing the stocks before deciding on one to buy?

Do you have an analysis template that you are willing to share?

    Thanks!

schwab roth- suggestions needed for investments

    Posted: 05 May 2018 09:17 AM PDT

We opened up two Roth IRAs a few months ago. We are currently adding $400 a month to each account, and I am looking for some help on where I should be putting this money.

All of DH's fund is going into a targeted retirement account (2040). I plan on keeping that consistent and I want to take a more hands off approach to his account.

My account is currently being split between 4 different mutual funds-- LGILX, SNXFX, SFSNX, and SWPPX. I also bought a few shares in Exxon and have 4 shares in SCHE.

Is this wrong? What else should I consider buying?

A little about us- we are in our late 30s. We both have amazing government pensions, which should provide health insurance and 85% of our final salary after 35 years. (we are set to hit that at age 58). If the pensions come through as promised, we are golden and this money will be used for our future child's college and travel money for us. If something happens to our pension system, we are doubly screwed and this money becomes much more important.

We have around 20k total in our 403Bs, but stopped contributing this year, in favor of the Roth.

Daily advice thread. All questions about your personal situation should be asked here

    Posted: 05 May 2018 05:05 AM PDT

If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or anything similar. There is no single answer to this question, but we will also need A LOT MORE information if we are to give some sort of answer

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive girlfriend? (not really an asset)
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Be aware that these answers are just opinions of Redditors and should be used as a starting point for your research. You should strongly consider seeing a registered financial rep before making any financial decisions!

Could you theoretically predict the stock market using twitter?

    Posted: 05 May 2018 11:34 AM PDT

It is all about sentiments, so you could theoretically build an algorithm that can find tweets talking about particular stocks and measure whether people overall are bullish or bearish using certain buzzwords, which are dreadfully overused on twitter! Would this work?

[x-post r/personalfinance] Another "looking for some feedback on my 401k asset allocation" thread

    Posted: 05 May 2018 01:27 PM PDT

Hey all, I am finally able to contribute to a 401k with my employer. I have a selection of funds that seemed quite foreign to me but have tried to do my research in order to deploy the 3-fund portfolio according to the Bogleheads wiki :)

    Background:

27 year old, no debt, stable job with good pay. Maxing out my Roth IRA each year but have yet to contribute to a 401k. I'm capable of also maxing the 401k starting now.

Here are the funds available to me, and futher down are the funds I've chosen:

    Bonds:

Dfa Inflation Protected Securities I ( DIPSX )

Federated Institutional High Yield Bond Instl ( FIHBX )

Metropolitan West Total Return Bond I ( MWTIX )

    Pimco Total Return I-2 ( PTTPX )

Templeton Global Bond Adv ( TGBAX )

Vanguard Gnma Adml ( VFIJX )

Vanguard Interm Term Bond Adml ( VBILX )

Vanguard Short Term Investment Grade Adml ( VFSUX )

    Equity:

American Funds New Perspective R6 ( RNPGX )

    Dfa Emerging Markets I ( DFEMX )

Dfa International Core Equity I ( DFIEX )

    Dfa Us Core Equity 1 I ( DFEOX )

Dfa Us Large Cap Value I ( DFEOX )

Dfa Us Targeted Value I ( DFFVX )

Gerstein Fisher Multi-Factor Global Real Estate Securities ( GFMRX )

Gerstein Fisher Multi-Factor Growth Equity ( GFMGX )

Gerstein Fisher Multi-Factor International Growth Equity ( GFIGX )

    T. Rowe Price Health Sciences ( PRHSX )

    Vanguard 500 Index Adml ( VFIAX )

Vanguard Balanced Index Inv ( VBINX )

Vanguard Growth Index Adml ( VIGAX )

Vanguard Lifestrategy Conservative Growth Inv ( VSCGX )

Vanguard Lifestrategy Growth Inv ( VASGX )

Vanguard Lifestrategy Income Inv ( VASIX )

Vanguard Mid Cap Index Fund Adml ( VIMAX )

Vanguard Mid-Cap Growth Index Inv ( VMGIX )

Vanguard Mid-Cap Value Index Inv ( VMVIX )

Vanguard Small Cap Growth Index Inv ( VISGX )

Vanguard Small Cap Index Adml ( VSMAX )

    Asset Allocation:

    Stock = 85% (80% US stock / 20% International stock)

    Bond = 15%

    My fund selection:

As I said before, I'm trying to get as close to the 3-fund portfolio approach as possible:

US Stock: (attempting to mimic to the US Total Stock Market)

55% VFIAX Vanguard 500 Index Adml (0.04% ER)

3% VIMAX Vanguard Mid Cap Index Fund Adml (0.05% ER)

10 VSMAX Vanguard Small Cap Index Adml (0.05% ER)

    International Stock:

17% DFIEX DFA International Core Equity I (0.30% ER)

    Bond:

15% VBILX Vanguard Intermediate-Term Bond Adml (0.07% ER)

I think my choices are in line with the Boglehead philosophy, but would love some feedback/criticism and corrections if there are better options.

    Thanks!
