    I got hit...other driver’s insurance saying I’m 20% responsible

    Posted: 09 May 2018 04:01 AM PDT

I was driving out of a parking lot and a lady pulls out of her spot and hits the side of my car. I stopped, honked my horn, and couldn't swerve to avoid her because there was a line of cars going through the drive-thru to my left. She admitted responsibility and wanted to pay for the repairs out of pocket, but I said that we should use her insurance because I didn't know her.

Her insurance (Allstate) placed me 20% at fault because I didn't do anything to avoid the accident. They said I should have honked my horn or swerved to avoid her (see above - I did honk and couldn't swerve or else I would have caused an accident). They told me to call my insurance company (Geico) which I did and they tried to get Allstate accept full responsibility which they still refused to do. My insurance company told me to allow them (Geico) to cover the claim and get my car fixed, and only then can they go after Allstate again. My insurance company said not to accept the 80% payment from Allstate.

I am going to get my car fixed tomorrow, and will probably end up paying all of it because it will likely cost less than my deductible. Before I do that, I was wondering if I am going about this correctly. What is the chance that my insurance company will be able to get Allstate to cover the entire cost in the end? If they don't, what is my next step - sue the other driver or Allstate? Is this common that an insurance company will put the person who got hit at partial fault even if it is clear that the person who caused the accident was at fault?

Local Independent Only Using 3 Companies

My local independent agent has only given me one quote, saying they've looked at 3 companies. I keep asking if this is the best quote among askl available carriers and I get crickets.

Should I be doing much shopping direct with carriers to make sure I'm not leaving a lot of money on the table?

I was laid off and was told ADP would contact me about benefits within 2 weeks... they didn't and I do not have health insurance now (Boston, MA)

    Posted: 08 May 2018 11:29 AM PDT

(Boston, MA) I was laid off on April 13th and was told that ADP would call me to discuss my health insurance benefits and dental going forward within a week or two. It has been over that time frame with no call from ADP and I just got a call from the doctors office that my insurance was invalid. I called my Health Insurance Provider and checked and was told it expired on April 30th (news to me). I looked online and read about COBRA and how to sign up. My only options are to start coverage June 1 I cannot start in the middle of the month. I have a doctors appointment I scheduled a while ago for Friday. Can I now not go to it? What do I do?

How to get insurance as a foreigner?

    Posted: 08 May 2018 11:26 PM PDT

I'm posting this on behalf of a friend. She has a very rare condition and has seen a doctor in the US (one of the only physicians in the world who treats her condition) who has told her she desperately needs surgery. However, the costs are astronomical as it requires several days in the ICU. My friend is Australian. Is there a way for her to get insurance that would cover the operation in the US?

She's very ill for the time being, so getting a job/working would be near impossible. Her mom might be able to get a job if she'd be covered though (she's ~24).

    Tips for Purchasing Homeowners Insurance??

    Posted: 08 May 2018 11:53 AM PDT

HI, I am in the process of purchasing homewoners insurance, I wonder if there are any tips or strategies I should be following? My current (captive) agent is no longer writing policies in the area, and I am now looking for another. I have been simply calling around to one general insurance agent, and a couple of captives asking for quotes, is there anything else I should be doing?

    Thanks!

    PIP Claim in Florida

    Posted: 08 May 2018 09:13 PM PDT

    Hey there r/insurance

I've been in 3 not at fault accidents in the last 3 years. In January of 2016 I was hit by a driver who overreacted to another driver (who never stopped) moving into their lane and swerved across 3 lanes of traffic and proceeded to get broadsided by a semi. About a year later I get a letter from my insurance company stating that they're paying out $50k to the semi driver since his medical bills were >$700k and if I was found even 10% at fault I would be liable for the difference since my policy was $50k/$100k. In February of 2017 I was rear ended by a drunk driver who was arrested on site and blew a .099 four hours after the accident. I did not go to the hospital but went to an urgent care later in the week and ended up seeing a chiropractor for the next 6 months 3x a week since I had 2 herniated discs. I did get a lawyer to go after the drivers insurance for damages. I filed a PIP claim for this accident since that's what my lawyer said I needed to do. I stopped seeing the chiropractor the first week of August 2017. I was out drinking with a friend the next Saturday night and we decided to Uber home like responsible adults and on our way home we were rear ended by a distracted driver who had a passenger in her front seat. My friend and I were both took ambulances to the hospital and got X-rays done to make sure we didn't have any major damage done. I went back to my chiropractor the following week and the had me get an MRI and it turns out I have two more herniated discs because of the new accident. I went to the chiropractor 2x a week until around November when I switched jobs and it was no longer feasible to go to the chiropractor due to my schedule. I filed another PIP claim through my own policy, again what my lawyer recommended. In January of 2018 I received a letter from progressive saying they are no longer going to insure me since I have 3 claims in the last 36 months. I shop around and find it difficult to find anyone who will insure me but eventually I get a quote from Allstate for $1800 for 6 months for $100k/$300k which isn't completely unreasonable. About 2 weeks later they send me a letter saying they're dropping me at the end of April 2018. Around the middle of April I start shopping around and absolutely no one will insure me now. I end up going to a local agent who is part of FAJUA and he manages to get me a policy through progressive for $7600 for 12 months. Which is completely insane. He tells me that no one will insure me due to my 2 PIP claims even though they were because of not at fault accidents. Upon reviewing my paperwork for my new policy it says that 3 accidents are all at fault, which they obviously aren't. My question is, how screwed am I? Is there any way to get the PIP claims off my record since I wasn't at fault for the accidents? I'm 23 and live in a small beach town in Florida.

    Accused of hit and run

    Posted: 08 May 2018 03:02 PM PDT

    Location: Washington State

Back in March I went to a dispensary near my house and was accused by one of the cashiers of hitting his parked car. The accident supposedly happened in the early evening on a mid-January day and he has a security video of the incident.

He said that a vehicle that looked like mine (I drive a very common car for the area) backed into his and drove away. After reviewing the footage he could tell it was a women who owned it. I had no idea what he was talking about so I denied it and left the store. He chased me after me and copied down my license plate.

Today I got notice from my insurance company that a claim had been filed against me for the January hit and run. He apparently got my info after filing a police report sometime in the last 6 weeks. My agent had the report but hasn't received the video yet. From the way the cashier was talking in March, I don't think he could see the license plate of the vehicle that hit his on the video, otherwise why not file the report back in January? And why bother getting my plate number in March?

If the video doesn't show the plate will the whole thing get dropped? Are my rates likely to go up because of the accusation and time the insurance company has to put into investigating? I let 3 family members drive my car on a regular basis so it's possible one of them hit the car and didn't say anything, what would happen in that circumstance?

    Career Starting Advice

    Posted: 08 May 2018 07:45 PM PDT

Hey everyone. I am a soon-to-be grad and am applying for various insurance companies to be an Auto Adjuster. I have taken a large interested in the MDP Geico has and what people's experiences are like with it. I'm a big fan of how I will have to do the auto adjuster job before moving into management - I'll understand it better. Has anyone gone through this, and what has your experience been? Are there any other recommendations you all can make to me? No other insurance company seems to be interested in my application.

Remove myself from my parents GEICO Auto-Policy

    Posted: 08 May 2018 03:37 PM PDT

Hi guys, thanks for reading, I appreciate any help I can get :)

Some background information, I kinda have a bad driving record, like three accidents. Those happened in New York State when I was part of their household while in college. Now that I am working and living in New Orleans and no longer drive or own a car and not living in the same household with my parents, I want to be removed from their policy so they can save a bunch of money.

But after asking me to provide documents proving I'm no longer part of their household with utility bills, they told me last minute that I cannot be removed unless I have proof of insurance for myself. They said because of the prior accidents that I am a risk that they cannot remove me unless I am insured elsewhere.

How am I a risk if I won't have access to their vehicle and not owning a vehicle myself? What can I do about this? I found something about "named driver exclusion" but apparently it's not allowed in New York State. Thank you so much for reading this and I would really appreciate any help I can get! Cheers!

[Auto] Can someone translate what this means in plain english please?

    Posted: 08 May 2018 02:45 PM PDT

I asked the Driver at fault's insurance if it would be okay to have them tow my car. I just asked her if I could have my car towed away because my family lives in a small apartment complex and we have to park outdoors every single day due to the totaled car sitting in the garage.

They replied with this/Translate if you can:

"If you decide to dispose of the vehicle, when it comes time to proceed with any payment for the property damage portion of this claim, the settlement would be based upon the owner-retained total loss settlement. If we have a policy limit issue then we would do a pro-rata settlement based off of the owner-retained settlement amount."

What does this mean? I'm trying to have them take care of my totaled car in the (3 car) accident, but they're trying to see if they can get the car I hit (the one in the front) to help cover for my damages bc their (the back car who hit me) policy doesn't think they can cover.

Parking is becoming a headache for my family and its been 3 months with little to no action from the insurance company because they are "gathering information" from the front driver.

Car insurance company (geico) cancelled policy without notifying us. Sent mail to wrong apartment number, never called us. Got into small accident.

    Posted: 08 May 2018 02:42 PM PDT

My fiancé was backing out of a parking spot in a parking lot (in California). She backed into a car that was travelling above the speed limit. Fiance's car has some paint transfer, nothing major. Other car has a dent and some paint damage, nothing major. Upon calling her insurance company. They notified her that her policy had been cancelled (april 10th). They had been sending her to her NEW address, but with the OLD apartment number. They never reached out by phone. It turns out she doesn't have car insurance. How do we proceed? Edit: on her insurance card it says she is covered through 10/2018

If I hire a kid to mow my lawn and they get hurt, can I be liable?

We are in the process of moving and don't want to have to transport our mower back and forth so we are thinking about hiring someone to mow the grass for us. Need advice.

    Posted: 08 May 2018 03:51 PM PDT

I have a full covered truck that was in a accident with my girlfriend alone driving it. Another car hit her in the back with the back of their vehicle as they were backing out. The other person's insurance is saying it is 50-50 since they were both backing out. The issue is my girlfriend is not on my insurance but I have full coverage full liability and the other person's insurance is now saying that my girlfriend has to pay them for the damages. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Homeowner insurance water leak question

    Posted: 08 May 2018 11:22 AM PDT

So I've owned my home for 1.5 years now, about 3 weeks ago I noticed a leak where both additions were added to the house, got someone out there for an estimate before submitting to insurance company. Estimate was over 6k to replace flashing, siding, shingles and drywall. Seems like a lot but what do I know. The real question is, is there any likelihood they would deny the claim? Something similar happened to my mother and they said the damage was there before she bought the house and should have noticed it so she got nothing.

Trying to find cheaper auto insurance. Why am I only finding ridiculously priced results?

    Posted: 08 May 2018 02:13 PM PDT

I'm a single 35 y/o male who's been driving for 20 years. Haven't had an accident in 18 years, and the one I did have was just a nudge coming out of a driveway that had a blind spot. Haven't had a speeding ticket in god knows how long. More than 15-16 years I wanna say. I drive a newish car that's 100% paid and bought...And I can't find a policy that's not less than $75 a month...When my father was my age he was paying like $30 or less per month. Current rates with state farm are $78 a month.....Where should I be looking to find a better rate with reliable service?

    Auto insurance claim question

    Posted: 08 May 2018 12:44 PM PDT

Long story short, a woman caused an accident and the resulting collision then hit my car.

I have full coverage, seems the woman who caused the accident did too. Opened up a claim with her insurer (State Farm) who after a week still hadn't been able to reach the lady to get her story. They already had the story from me and the other guy she caused the accident with. My car was not undriveable so I've been cruising around in a dinged up car. After a couple weeks of that and State Farm still not accepting responsibility despite having both statements from the victims, police reports and images from the scene, I was ready to get this going. Called my insurance, opened up a claim, got my car fixed. I get my car back tomorrow, it's now been a month since the accident. State farm has still not accepted responsibility because their insured has gotten herself a lawyer; for what, I have no idea. So I'll have to pay my deductible tomorrow when I pick up the car and then I guess my insurance company takes over in trying to get everything back from hers. My question is this, is there anything I can do to speed this process up? The woman is absolutely at fault, state farm is dragging their feet so they don't have to pay, I assume. I know they don't have to get her side of the story because what if she had died, they'd just throw their hands up and say, "sorry we can't get in touch with her?" But I want my deductible back as soon as possible, I didn't do anything wrong except be in the wrong place at the wrong time and right now this woman is basically holding my money hostage after she caused this whole thing to begin with.

    Any and all advice appreciated.

    Elevation Certificate Question. [USA, MS]

    Posted: 08 May 2018 12:34 PM PDT

I am looking to add flood insurance to my home. The home was built in 2009. According to the FEMA website, the "FIRM" map for my area wasn't created until 2010. It shows we should be a low risk area. Will I be required to obtain a Elevation Certificate in order to purchase Flood Insurance?

EDIT: Specifically I am looking to buy the Flood Insurance through a company like MetLife, All State, or something like that. I just want to know if I'll need the Certificate before starting the process.

    Insurance Marketing

    Posted: 08 May 2018 04:37 AM PDT

    Hey!

Background: Business management and marketing were my majors in college, sold insurance for 6 months, wasn't a huge fan of selling, accepted a position training as an office manager and head of marketing.

Question: What are some ideas, tips, tricks, and any advice in general that you think may spark an idea, or help me market this independent insurance agency? We are in a great part of the state, it's booming and the location of the office is great. I'm currently working on setting up Facebook Marketing. Other ideas include door to door, setting up table booths at the local high school and university, flyers / mailers, LinkedIn, as well as Facebook message and texting. Any and all advice and comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    Auto Insurance Question [Pennsylvania]

    Posted: 08 May 2018 10:38 AM PDT

My car was recently damaged by a valet company.

They've owned responsibility of the damage and have agreed to cut me a check for the amount of the repairs as well as a rental vehicle while the car is being repaired.

The needed repairs are not incredibly significant. The damage is around the driver's side rear-wheel well. Some good scrapes/dents. Estimated cost of repairs is in excess of $1,000USD.

My only outlying concern is any possible depreciation as a result of these repairs, such as something showing up on a carfax report which would reduce my vehicle's potential trade-in value as this is something that I would want to account for, and be compensated for, if that is the case.

Where insurance comes into this is basically.....should I engage my insurer and have them work with the valet company to make sure I don't leave any money on the table here?

    Question about MA Auto Insurance

    Posted: 08 May 2018 10:35 AM PDT

Hello - I'm considering buying my first vehicle, but I'm a bit put off by the high insurance rates I see when I do an online quote.

I'm 38 years old, but have only had my license for about 2 years now. Never owned a vehicle, haven't been involved in an accident. I live in a suburb of Boston. Have a Masters degree - mentioning that because I've heard education level can impact rate. I would consider buying a 4 door sedan, possibly a Honda or Toyota.

Typically, given the info above, what would be an acceptable monthly insurance premium? I know key info is missing, but wondering if someone had a ballpark idea of what I should be paying monthly.

Thanks in advance for your time!

    Question about term insurance

    Posted: 08 May 2018 09:48 AM PDT

I am a soon to be Insurance agent and I want to focus on selling Term life Insurance because I believe that you should never get into those Investment+insurance policies as they are shit. Term insurance is very cheap that is why I like it, it serves the consumer.

Here in the Philippines term life insurance is nearly non existent, insurance companies here focus on Insurance+investment policies which I think is because they care more about making money. I think this is a scam and I want to push for term life insurance awareness.

My question is: Why do you think Term insurance is not offered/marketed here in the Philippines? Term insurance here is also very expensive, why is that? In the US you can get 250,000 usd coverage for less than 20 usd a month, here in the philippines you can get about 20k usd coverage only for that? I wonder why?

I think the insurance industry here is a scam

[Update] to Red flags at doctors office, possible insurance fraud?

    Posted: 08 May 2018 09:14 AM PDT

    Original Post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Insurance/comments/8eufag/red_flags_at_doctors_office_possible_insurance/

Some of the paperwork is coming through now. I feel like I'm being over-billed, but I'm not sure if there's anything I can do about it.

The nasal scope was billed as 31575, which seems correct. On my insurance's website they show I will be responsible for $111. A far cry from the $10-15 the nurse implied the cost would be, but probably nothing I can do about that.

The office visit being billed as 99244. If someone could explain to me how my visit warrants that high of a billing code I'd appreciate it. Part of the intake paperwork included a questionaire regarding sleep issues. Apparently I answered this in a way that is atypical of his usual patient because the first thing he did when walking into the room was to say very rudely "I don't understand why you're here." When I tried to give him a history of my issues, and how similar they are to my father's who most definitely has sleep apnea (diagnosed), he told me that I didn't have it and my only issue was insomnia.

He talked over me the entire time "explaining" why my complaints were invalid. Gave me a spritz of lidocaine in each nostril. Fed a tube up one and wiggled it around in my throat briefly. Briefly listened to my lungs (not sure what he could have heard by just touching it to my back a couple of times without actually having me breath at all). Told me he would not refer me to a sleep clinic because my "insurance would not pay for it." Then he said that he would refer me for a take-home sleep test which he said would not show apnea issues because of my insomnia which he admitted would be a pointless waste of money.

I spent less than 25 minutes in the exam room in total, including the wait before the doctor came in, the nurse having me fill out more paperwork, and having to watch a 1 minute video after he left "so that [I'd] know what sleep apnea really is."

So he really only examined one bodily system (my throat), he spent far less than 60 minutes in the exam room, and the decision must not have been moderately complex because he made it before even entering the room. He billed my insurance $276 for that.

I'd really like to understand how the billing for this works.

Sorry if wrong sub at this point (is there a better one for billing?), but there were some people on my last post who wanted to be updated.
