What is something your firm did that made you lose respect for it and its management?

    Posted: 07 May 2018 04:38 PM PDT

Today I learned that I only make $500 more than someone that has 1 less year of experience than me, hasn't passed the CPA exam, and who my managers routinely have me train them on higher level areas. Brought up before busy season that I had been handed a lot of responsibilities but that the pay hadn't kept up and was told that I make "much" more than the staff below me.

    Here goes that job search.

[CAN] Anyone go through the in-depth tax course?

    Posted: 07 May 2018 05:56 PM PDT

How did you find it? How many hours per week? Are there exams each year? If not what is the form of evaluation?

    Posted: 07 May 2018 05:41 PM PDT

Well, my vision is getting worse every year. Plus, I have all of these squiggly things in my vision.

This is my greatest fear -> to be a blind CPA.

How do I request for a new chair?

    Posted: 07 May 2018 06:24 PM PDT

The bare bones chair I am on has suffered over the years from the various posterior sizes on it, any padding it has is utterly compressed. My colleagues seem fine with theirs so I dont want to be that guy. I dont even mind buying a new one with my own cash

    Advice for student resume?

    Posted: 07 May 2018 05:13 PM PDT

I don't have a lot to brag about, no volunteering, clubs, etc. I've worked my way through college as a clerk for a small business. Now I'm trying to get an internship and feel very inferior to my unknown competitors. Any advice for how to spin my limited experience would be great.

    Financial analyst and accounting experience?

    Posted: 07 May 2018 08:48 PM PDT

What are the chances of being able to find an analyst role that includes accounting experience that would qualify for the CPA? And how would I go about finding that?

New to CPA job, confused with task I was given today

    Posted: 07 May 2018 06:08 PM PDT

I was given the task of inputting the financials from the F/S provided from the client to proceed with a Review. The partner told me to take the numbers in the B/S and I/S and input them into the 4th qtr balances for each account in the Trial Balance and told me to start with the I/S numbers first.

He told me not to input the retained earnings amount and if there was a difference to put it in some holding account? What I did not get was the point of this and if the trial balance was supposed to balance at all? I know that the B/S should obviously balance once I enter the numbers in, but if I input the I/S numbers, wouldn't that make it uneven? My coworker told me that the net income is reflected in the R/E but that doesn't even help balance it because Net income was 400k and retained earnings was around 5 mil?

If anyone understands this, I'd appreciate any help possible!

    CPA vs. CMA

    Posted: 07 May 2018 05:59 PM PDT

What are the main differences between the two licenses? I know the CPA is better, but what are the biggest differences in careers?

I'm trying to decide between two universities and the one I'd prefer to go to only has a major for Corporate Accounting and it mainly prepares you for the CMA, so would it be much tougher to get the CPA after that major? If I just get the CMA instead of the CPA, what kind of different things would I be doing day-to-day?

Good book to read to improve accounting skills and prepare myself for intermediate accounting?

    Posted: 07 May 2018 05:50 AM PDT

Hi guys so I just wrapped up my sophomore year of college and I got A's in both my principle accounting classes but I don't feel confident enough in my abilities partially due to poor professors and am unsure if accounting is for me. Long story short what book should I buy to best prepare me for intermediate and upper level accounting classes so I can kick ass in those classes? Thanks for the help

    Scam Email?

    Posted: 07 May 2018 06:46 AM PDT

Want to crowd source an opinion on this. It looks and smells like a scam.

Got an email this morning from an individual saying a complaint has been filed against me and my employer. The email is from the National Board of Accountancy (email ends in @nagts.org domain).

Email had a link to look at the complaint and yadda yadda a failure to respond could result in a default judgment against me.

Unless there is some sort of Accountancy board I'm not aware of, this looks and smells of a scam. Yay?

    Finished Accounting Principles 1

    Posted: 07 May 2018 10:33 AM PDT

I know it's not a very impressive achievement. But I just wanted to tell someone that I finished the class at a community college. I have also been working at an accounting firm for the last 2 years (I was doing mechanical engineering before but I switched to Accounting). Also I just recently got my Enrolled Agent certification as well.

I know the accounting profession isn't always glamorous, but I'm happy there is such a strong community here. I can't wait to continue going on with my accounting education!

What sort of informational CPA content do you wish was more available to you?

    Posted: 07 May 2018 03:48 PM PDT

I've been hired to do some content writing designed for CPAs and decided I'd go right to the source to see what sort of topics you as professionals would like to read. What do you wish there was more information about? What topics are you sick of reading about? Etc. It would also be really helpful to know how far along in your career you are if you're comfortable sharing that with me.

I know there are rules against posting links to personal content/self-promotional stuff in this subreddit, so I don't plan on posting my articles here after they've been written. But I'd love to know what you all are wanting to read more of and what would actually be useful for you.

    Thanks in advance!

Interview woes - Any chance it's salvageable?

    Posted: 07 May 2018 07:53 PM PDT

    Okay, I screwed up.

I had a call with an interviewer today. He asked if I was still with the company listed on my resume and I said 'yes'. I had fully intended to explain that no, actuallly I had accepted a new job a few weeks ago, but the position hasn't turned out as expected.

Rather than doing as planned, I end up misleading this person. That is not my style. I am a very honest person and feel like the biggest douchebag on the planet. I was/am very interested in the position, and haven't been happy with the choice I made to leave my former role, so didn't want to knock myself out of the running by showing a job for a couple of weeks on my resume.

I can't explain my actions on my I did this. I just know the new role isn't for me and I think I'm desperate to rectify that.

Any way to salvage this? My husband recommends emailing tomorrow, tell the truth, apologizing for misleading and explaining the rationale behind it, knowing full well that it excludes me from going further in the process, but at least being able to sleep at night.

    Thoughts? Recommendations?

Edit - most of the post as I accidentally hit submit before finishing.

Can I find and do an internship for AFTER my graduation?

    Posted: 07 May 2018 07:49 PM PDT

I have one or two more semesters left to graduate, and have not had an internship yet. In the upcoming fall 2018, how likely is it for me to find an internship for summer 2019? I will most likely graduate in spring of 2019, but it's possible that I might graduate in fall 2018.

If this doesn't work, should I not apply for graduation until I get an internship?

Does this reduce the chances of me being accepted for an internship compared to those who are looking to do their internship before graduation? Thanks!

Networking Tips for a University Student? [CAN]

    Posted: 07 May 2018 03:34 PM PDT

My school is hosting a networking event where employers from a company I am interested in interning at will be present. I'd like to attend and make a good impact with the recuirters there. I actually connected and have spoke to one of the recuirters through linkedin, and they suggested I come to the networking event, so I hope I will see the lady there. I just don't know how to network without being awkward. Do you have any tips on how to network, questions to ask, how to approach people, when to stop speaking...etc ANY advice?

New industry job with long hours. Is this standard?

    Posted: 07 May 2018 07:11 PM PDT

I started a new job as a senior accountant at a publicly traded company in industry. I expect to work some extra hours around month end and for quarterly filings. I talked to two guys (one has been there 3 months and the other 3 years and is a CPA) and they said the standard working hours are pretty late. If they get out of the office by 630/645pm then it's a "good night". Is this pretty typical for super late nights in industry? I know as an accountant some longer days are required but I'm definitely not a work > having a life type of person.

How important are the upper div accounting classes that you pick?

    Posted: 07 May 2018 07:05 PM PDT

for my university, we have to take 3 upper div accounting classes. ideally, i'd pick: financial auditing, advanced accounting, and non-profit accounting since they seem the most useful and at least somewhat interesting. but my university is absolute shit in getting their students the classes they need to graduate so I don't think i'll be able to take all 3. would i miss anything by replacing one of them with advanced accounting info systems? it doesn't seem like that useful of a class unless i wanted to do it / it audit, but i really need to take an elective.
