We're worth more than our house

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 08:38 AM PDT

Our home appraised for $375k when we bought it last year and our net worth is now roughly $380k. All of our investments are in retirement accounts. Can't pay off the house yet but it'll be knocked out in 10-12 years. Feels good to reach this milestone.

Daily FI discussion thread - April 28, 2018

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 04:09 AM PDT

Please use this thread to have discussions which you don't feel warrant a new post to the sub. While the Rules for posting questions on the basics of personal finance/investing topics are relaxed a little bit here, the rules against memes/spam/self-promotion/excessive rudeness/politics still apply!

Have a look at the FAQ for this subreddit before posting to see if your question is frequently asked.

Since this post does tend to get busy, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.

Needing bonds in accumulation phase of FI if large cash reserves and auto investing every month ?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 12:32 PM PDT

Hey guys 28 male here currently have one fund VTSAX in a taxable account and auto invest 2500 monthly. Have a 25k emergency fund and save about 10k a year on top of living expenses. Is it just important to to dump as much as I can in vtsax and not worry about it if I don't need the money and won't rely on it if the market goes down with auto invest every month. Or is it still beneficial to invest in some vwitx municipal bonds thanks

Planning on doing this for 10-12 years and taking it easy after that is this a viable option thanks

    ESPPs and RSUs?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 03:21 PM PDT

What's the general consensus on selling these and tax burdens? Are there any rules-of-thumb? Have held these for a few years and searched around but don't have a clear answer.

    Timeframes? Sell to diversify?

    Thanks!

Why is no one talking about annuities or pensions?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 10:20 AM PDT

Annuities and pensions are the only vehicles I am aware of which guarantee certain distributions financially once withdrawals are needed. They are not subject to required minimum distributions which increase like a 401k once you are a certain age.

Can you guys give me some insight into what I am missing? What are your pros and cons for these options? Are many of us sold on index funds, high dividend stocks, and equities given we are in a long bull run and haven't felt the pain of a long bear market? Are we taking for granted the lowest mortgage interest rates in decades?

Please feel free to criticize and debate any and all statements. Happy to hear any thoughts!

    FU and FU Money

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 10:52 PM PDT

Nearly told my putative supervisor to go fuck herself today. I did not. Instead, I responded to her email diatribes with simple facts. She's a bully and a scrapper, so she will go at me again next week. Am surprisingly calm. Must be the FU money...I hear on this sub that many had really good results because they were able to stand their grounds because of FU money. I hope for similar results!

Network Marketing - Legit or bs?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 04:19 PM PDT

So I attended a Get Motivated Seminar in Detroit, and networked with some great people. One gentleman who I'll call Jack and I actually just sat down to talk about an opportunity. He basically gave me his life story(he escaped a war from his country in Africa) and got his degree and makes 6 figures. But he wants more because he works a lot.

He gave me a book to read before our next meeting. I believe it's written by the author of rich dad poor dad. Jack said I will make my own mini Amazon store (although not on Amazon) and that is the basis of what I'll do. I also join a "team". What do you guys think? I am PT school and work right now. Probably going FT work PT school. The thought of trying to juggle all this stresses me out, but it could be a good side hustle. Is this worth my time?

I've read some very conflicting views on Network Marketing.

Any recommendations for a fee-based financial advisor in the GSO/NC area? More details in comments.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 09:56 AM PDT

I've saved enough for FIRE in more or less randomly-chosen funds, mostly low-fee, mostly index. I haven't planned for taxation after retirement or scheduling, though I hope to retire within the year. Looking to best structure my withdrawals. Any recommendations?

What are some good resources for advanced financial planning?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 04:12 AM PDT

I'm thinking of an algorithm/formula that determines whether you withdraw from stocks or bonds based on the current 12 month return vs. a long term average.

Or a long term financial plan that incorporates an expected baseline, but also acknowledges a high probability of generating above the baseline over the long term, and an algorithm/formula for determining when it's safe to access that extra cash and not impact the baseline.

Examples would be cool, but I want to get better at the science behind them.

I'm guessing there are more things like the above, but I don't know enough to even imagine them. I'd love to just get into the complexities of probabilities and building mathematical models for success to capture those complexities.

How can I learn about them? I'm cool with college level resources, and with doing legwork on foundations first. I just have no idea where to start, and don't want to enroll in college for it. Actuary course materials maybe?

IRS modifies HSA contribution for 2018 back to $6,900

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 08:07 PM PDT

Quite a bit of backlash about modifying the initial $6,900 down to $6,850. The IRS changed their tune and now updated to $6,900 again.
