"life expectancy" of S&P 500 companies continues to fall

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 03:15 AM PST

The "life expectancy" of S&P companies has fallen from 33Y in 1990 to 20Y today, and is forecast to shrink to 14Y by 2026E. Up to 50% of S&P companies are set to be replaced in the next 10Y. Only 64 out of 1,600+ companies have been on the S&P 500 for 50Y. The issue is illustrated on this graph: https://i.imgur.com/Wuuwni3.jpg

Using alexa website traffic statistics as a leading indicator

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 06:13 AM PST

I've been using this free Amazon service https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo to guide my stock picking for years and it seems to have some value. For example, Netflix traffic has increased along with the stock price. Squareup.com traffic is generally increasing, grubhub.com is up strongly along with dominoes.com. Shopify.com has decreasing traffic for some reason. Using website traffic for companies that do most of their business offline doesn't work as well as it does for Netflix. Another good indicator is app downloads https://www.applyzer.com/?mmenu=worldcharts which need to be considered in addition to website traffic, for example snapchat. What do you guys think? Any holes in my logic or additional indicators to look for and how does your favorite growth stock look with this screen?
Disclosure: I am long Netflix, Amazon, and recently bought some Square.

What are your thoughts on Ford?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 05:38 AM PST

Hi guys just a quick post/question from me. I stumbled across Ford and saw the company has an extremely low P/E, low price to book ratio and a solid current ratio. I will also be doing my usual in depth DD later tonight after work but was wondering what reddit thought of the stock? As I barely ever hear anyone talk about it. Does the company have a glaring issue that explains its low price or is it just undervalued?

    Thanks.

Gary Cohn to Resign as Trump’s Top Economic Adviser - How will this effect the market?

How do you think the markets will react to this tomorrow?

That's it? Indices down 0.6%. This is why I don't take after market seriously.

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 07:00 AM PST

I almost sold some at market open (to experiment) because I thought it's all downwards from here (at least for the day). I was going to then buy a low during the day.

Was it just dumb to think it would play out that way?

Edit: Context: This is day after Cohn resigned.

Thoughts on $KO after the tariff announcements?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 11:00 AM PST

I thought this stock would take a bit of a tumble, being reliant on aluminum and all. It seems to be relatively unaffected though so I'm curious as to your thoughts.

CHK listed as possible good investment by USA Today

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 10:33 AM PST

CHK or Chesapeake Energy Company is currently listed at just around $3 per share. Seems like a low risk stock. Right now looking at purchasing just a smattering of shares 10-20 any thoughts?

NETFLIX IS Profitable. Just not as much. Profit margins are just low.- Review

    Posted: 06 Mar 2018 11:54 PM PST

NFLX is struggling with their cash flow, but I believe they are focusing on what they found is their momentum, focusing on content and reaching various audience will help them. Because of this factor, they are leading against their competitors with the highest budget for content spent. One thing that will help netflix is bringing in newer shows, if they struggle with adding new content this would lead people binge watching everything and left with nothing left to watch. And netflix will be left with really high expense.

What's risky about netflix and for investors

    • Shows like bright. High budget production like this if it fails, and if viewership is low for shows like this, netflix will struggle big time. Netflix opinion about this show is contrary to what the internet feels about this show. based on how internet feels about bright, It would be relieving to just know people are boot-legging this show.

    • It's hard to know which shows are self produced by netflix, and which are licenced. Two shows that were successful and are self produced by netflix are stranger things and orange is the new black (according to the internet).

    • Competition from amazon and apple. These Giants bundling up their services. I still don't know why Amazon didn't bundle everything up yet, if they bundle up their prime shipping, prime music, prime video and audible books this would be a direct threat, even though amazon content is not comparable to Netflix, it will feel to some customers they are getting more than they paid for. Also Amazon has a lot more money than Netflix to push new content on their streaming service.

    • Netflix is burning free money- They are pretty much experimenting with content creation.

    What helps netflix Investors.

    • Netflix does not provide detailed statistics of their most watched shows which helps them increase their subscriber list, nor do they tell you what's on netflix, unless someone really does vigorous research to find what's on netflix, easiest way to know whats on netflix is buying the membership. It can be assumed that the shows that stay on netflix is probably their most watch show.
    • Fees are cheap people forget about it, it cost approximately one mcdonald meal per month or ~.50 cents a day.

Does $TSLA still have a future?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 03:20 AM PST

Have a few stocks and been hanging on since $320 back in May of last year. Being a Tesla bull, I didn't think about selling when the stock price hit $380 a few months back, a decision which I now sorely regret. Dad tells me to hang on to it (says that about most stocks!) but I honestly don't see much of a future. The price keeps fluctuating around $320-350.

Is this a bad sign? What are your thoughts surrounding Tesla?

Spotify direct-listing may be a turning point in IPO Process

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 07:17 AM PST

For those of you who haven't seen it, Spotify is planning a DPO (Direct Public Offering). Their rational is essentially to cut through the underwriting, roadshow, etc BS. For background, IPO registration fees cost Snapchat $88m.

I think depending on the success of this listing, it could change the landscape of IPOs. If it falls flat, underwriting banks will be able to point to it as a reason why they are necessary in the process (and therefore continue to reap huge fees). If it succeeds, more companies (especially tech) may seek to do it and cut banks out of many deals.

I personally will not buy Spotify because the competition is insane in the space and they have steep losses.

What are you guys thoughts? Will anyone buy Spotify?

    Investment Survey for Graduate Students

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 07:23 AM PST

We're a group of graduate students collecting survey responses regarding habits/lifestyle of investors. This is a completely anonymous survey (we made it so you don't have to log in to a Google account).

We understand that everyone usually hates surveys, so please disregard if you have no interest. We cleared this post with the mods first, so we're hoping this isn't an issue.

    Thoughts on $DFS ?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 07:00 AM PST

I've seen some discussion about MA and V on /r/stocks fairly frequently. A lot of times the discussion revolves around the continuing trend of going to a cashless society with millions of transactions a day using their cards, and how these companies still have a ton of growth to look towards in counties outside the US.

However I have not seen DFS (Discover) mentioned much. They are definitely smaller than MasterCard and Visa, would this be viewed as a positive, that they have more room to grow? They have also been becoming more and more mainstream. I remember 5ish years ago it was still sort of a crapshoot going in to a restaurant if they would take Discover or not. Now just about everyone does.

I'm interested in this because I've been using Discover for the last 6 years and they have absolutely phenomenal customer service and I've never had any issues with them. I wouldn't mind investing in a company that I fully support and enjoy their product, but I am curious if others think they will be completely overshadowed by MA and V?

    Effects on US currency

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 05:46 AM PST

I am curious what impact we think the recent resignation and what it likely means for the potential tariff decision will have on the USD. sizing up a few usd stocks today if the market dips but as a Canadian investor, the exchange rate risk could be a major factor.

    Options plays

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 04:22 AM PST

I've been out of the options game for awhile but I'm looking to get back in. Typically only like to do long calls on oversold stocks. I know some stocks have much more volatile options than others. What are some good stocks to get back in with options? Monthly and or leaps. Don't like the weeklys
