    Advice on selling a business

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 05:06 PM PST

Located in Huntington Park, Los Angeles California

Long story short my father/owner of a shoe business passed away in October of last year

I took it on myself to see if I can manage the store with the help of my mother. It is has become challenging for me to run the store since I have my own full time career and my family.

My mother is close to retirement age and doesn't drive. I am not comfortable with her taking the bus or uber on a daily basis. I work and cannot take her myself.

It was difficult for us to let go of a store my dad work so hard to create. We have came to an agreement that our best option is to sell the store if possible . closing it with the amount of inventory we have would take us quite some time.

Shoe business with about 12 years on location. Business is steady not losing, years of great and returning customers.

My questions are how do I go about pricing my store.

This is something that just fell in my hands and I was totally unprepared for.

After I come to a sell agreement what steps would I take to finalize the sale, like paperwork, or documentation.

    Thanks in advance..

Best credit card processing and POS system combination for a retail store

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 01:11 AM PST

Hi, everyone. I've been going through a lot of the archives here, and there is so much conflicting information mainly based on different companies having different needs. In addition, a lot of people tend to post about their bad experiences which makes it hard to find what people do like (versus what they do not).

I am going to be opening a cosmetics retailer within the next few months. From my reading on here when it comes to credit card processing, the two main choices are flat rate and interchange plus. I've read that interchange is normally best for low-volume and for smaller ticket sales (e.g. less than $10). Given that, I think interchange may be better for the store given that cosmetics, fragrances, skincare, etc. normally cost more than $10 a piece.

It's difficult to estimate my volume of sales and credit card transactions at this point since I haven't opened yet. I will have an online component, but first I want to launch the bricks and mortar, get that running smoothly, then launch the online. Therefore, online sales will become a part of the picture within a few months after I open, but not immediately.

I have no sales yet to go by so the closest I can do is bootstrap an estimation by pulling the financials from Ulta, a similar type of store but they are a huge chain and recently was bought out by Sephora. Their 2017 (2016) financial statement shows them with a revenue of $468 (424)/square foot. Those numbers are strictly for their bricks and mortar operations per store. If I go by those numbers, revenues can be estimated to be between $572,400 - $631,800 for me. (I'm being optimistic and realize my numbers will differ, but at least that gives me a starting number to estimate with and work from given that I'm not open yet).

I need to make sure my pos system and my credit card processor are compatible with each other. I would like to have a pos system that has a loyalty program as part of the system.

What combination of credit card processing and POS systems do other retailers on here use who have bricks and mortar operations? Do you like it? Was there some other combination you've used in the past that you didn't like? I'm looking for all combinations, good and bad that people have used.

For those taking the time to answer, I really appreciate any insight you can offer.

    Hand drawn T-shirts

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 11:37 PM PST

I am thinking of starting my small business of hand drawn T-shirts. I would sell it on Facebook. Every T-shirt would be authentic, hand drawn by me.

Any thoughts about this kind of business?

Maybe you know some one else doing it?

Mini Golf - the good, bad, and the ugly

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 08:29 AM PST

    Anyone care to post?

Found a building in an area that has millions of tourists a year and would be a great spot. Would be indoors so not worry about the rain, snow, or anything like that!

Obviously have to get permits, design the course, buy all the supplies, etc (and obviously won't be cheap) but just curious if it could be worth it.

    Advice needed for partnership

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 01:27 AM PST

    Hi there

So I've got an opportunity to take my business to the next level with the company. currently, work at. The company I currently work at are a web development agency and I believe its the right thing to do, However, I'm not super comfortable with the share they are looking at wanting. (currently 50/50, I obviously want to remain majority but I was looking at 70/30).

I believe as a business this would be the right way to go. even if I own only half the business I would be starting the company basically debt free and I would be able to actually see this project succeed (its been 2-3 years working on it)

Any thoughts/advice on if this is the right choice?

How to report taxes on a single member LLC that's not owned by me?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 09:35 PM PST

A close friend and business contact has established an LLC but decided to accept a full time position working as a systems administrator for another company. Because of that reason he will not be moving forward with managing the company. He asked if I would like to use his LLC to provide local IT consulting. In this endeavor I would be the only person operating under the LLC even though he is listed as the owner.

I apologize for my ignorance on the subject but how would I approach reporting and paying taxes on any profits I made while using the LLC given that he is the owner, but I am the only member working to generate profit?

Trying to get exposure for my local Facebook page

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 09:24 PM PST

Crossposted in Entrepreneur and Startups, no ones answered and I almost immediately got downvoted in entrepreneur (as usual) so I'm trying here.

Hi all. I'm in the growth phase of my little Facebook page that local business owners can drop their link on and customers can review a local business (kinda like Yelp, but Facebook is used much more for reviews around me). So far I have 163 likes on the page and me and my friend were thinking of creative ways to gain more exposure. We eventually came up with a scavenger hunt. We would contact a few local business owners (we've made pretty good connections in the last week and a half we've been doing this) and ask if they'd like to sponsor a scavenger hunt, we hit a certain amount of likes on the page and we say "Thanks everyone for liking the page! To celebrate, we teamed up with so and so to bring you guys a scavenger hunt. We hid a gift card to their business in town, first one to find it gets a discount or free item/service to that business!".

Does that sound like a decent idea? We're having trouble trying to figure out exactly when we could do this, as I feel like we'd need a decent amount of likes/followers for a business to sponsor something like this (main goal is exposure for us and the business obviously.) We'd ask the business if they'd be willing to post about the scavenger hunt on their social media outlets and tag us and we'd obviously do the same.

What do you guys think the best type of business to target would be for this kind of thing? I feel like a restaurant would be best because everyone eats (lol) so I feel like more people would be willing to look around town for a free gift card to a good local restaurant.

What do I need to consider before I sign a commercial space/retail lease? (Coffee shop/cafe)

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 07:10 PM PST

    Hi all,

So I was looking to buy a building, but have found the perfect space to rent instead. The owner doesn't currently want to sell, so I've decided to rent from him because of ideal location, rent price, and size/layout of the space.

With all the being said, what should i take into consideration with regards to the lease?

I'll have to do a decent amount of adding value to his property via way of putting in new hardwood floor, running new water pipes to coffee machines, bathroom updates, design/esthetics updates etc.

Should I ask for a few months free rent for when I'm doing this since I'll be increasing his property value?

What other things should I negotiate or know before going into this conversation?

    Thanks!

    Shipping tradeshow booth/supplies?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 07:33 AM PST

We have gone to about a dozen tradeshows over the last few years, but we have one coming up in October that will be too far to drive (philly to vegas). We normally do a 10x10 booth, and we haul everything in a 10' trailer. I am looking at options for getting our booth to Vegas. Everything seems wildly expensive though. I think my options are:

    1. Hire some one to pull our trailer there and back

    2. Have our trailer loaded onto a flatbed, we rent a pickup in Vegas to do setup

    3. Get a POD , load it up, send it there and back. Questionable logistics on setup and teardown with this one.

    4. Design and build custom travel boxes, and have them shipped out.

I'm guessing #4 is the best option, but I don't know. What would be the best way to ship these big crate/boxes?...just a regular freight company?

Is there another option I'm not considering? What have you found to be most economical?

    Question about finding product manufacturers

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 06:14 AM PST

My business is online retail, so I don't make my own products, but I do get some of them from small manufacturers. My best seller comes from a single manufacturer, which is okay but kind of a risk if he goes out of business for whatever reason. I've also had fellow business people suggest that I'd sell more in this super-competitive market if I could get some exclusives - products with my own branding. Love the idea, so have been tossing around in my head how I'd go about that.

I also love watching the tv show The Profit and the host Marcus always seems to know how to find better suppliers, manufacturers and places that package raw product, etc. I've done some google searches but don't know how to find someone to duplicate my best seller for my own branded product. How do you find this kind of thing? The product I'd like made is constructed from a combination of nylon-plastic and leather. It seems fairly simple to make if you have the right equipment (injection molding? leatherworking tools?)

I've also googled for makerspaces but they all seem to be into high tech stuff. Has anybody here done this, and how did you find your custom manufacturer?

Oh, I should add that I don't want cheap Chinese manufactured crap. I want made in the USA.

Opening new CrossFit business: any advice from owners or members?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 06:03 PM PST

There are a number of other CrossFit gyms near me and I wanted to ask the community (from both owners and members) on how you either stay competitive or decide which box to join?

I just launched my website last week: www.crossfitparable.com

Would love some feedback on how the site looks!

Can you deduct business expenses that happened earlier during the year prior to the establishment of your LLC?

Employee lied about being at a conference

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 01:50 PM PST

Had a very hard working employee lie about being at a conference. This employee rarely takes time off and takes a lot of pride in his work ethic. He was supposedly at a conference today and I asked for him to send a pic, and he got one from Google. I have no issue with him taking time off if he asks for it but the fact that he directly lied to me...

    Should I bring it up?

Need Recommendations on Appointment E-Mail Reminder System

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 08:51 AM PST

I currently use Mad Mimi for my e-mailing needs and I really like it, but every so often I need to send out batches of appointment reminder style e-mails. As in, we have 10 people scheduled for a certain event over 10 different times, so I need to send out 10 individual e-mails that vary only in the stated appointment time but are otherwise identical. These aren't self-scheduled either. We set the appointment time with people while talking to them over the phone.

I'd prefer to keep everything through Mad Mimi, but doing these appointment e-mails is too time consuming through them.

So does anyone have any ideas as far as lightweight, low volume appointment reminder systems go?

    Shipping in Canada

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 12:36 PM PST

    Hello everyone,

I have an item that needs to be shipped across Canada, mainly focusing on Ontario. It is a small item, 3x2 inches.

I was wondering if anyone can suggest the cheapest/most effective way to start shipping these items. I am not really looking for any 1 day special deliveries, just something that is reliable.

    Thank you in advance!

This is my first reddit post, don't judge too hard! :/
