    Life insurance commission rates

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 10:21 PM PST

I have a question about commission rates for sales agents in the life insurance industry.

My brother has recently gotten a side job at a financial services company in California that sells life insurance (amongst other products). He is currently being 'trained' to be a life insurance salesperson and he is currently working towards his license to be an insurance agent.

His company has asked him to recruit a number of sales before he earns any commission on them. If he hits 3 by the end of his first month with this company, the company has said they will give him a bigger percentage of the commission on all sales after he becomes a licensed agent. (If he only gets 2 life insurance sales, he will get a 30% commission rate and if he gets 3 sales, he will get a 45% commission rate.)

Does this sound pretty standard? Or is this a scam practice by a dodgy company? I have my doubts which is why I ask.

I should also mention that this is my brother's 'side job'. He makes a comfortable wage working in the health insurance industry but because he is always scrounging for more money, he has taken this work on the side.

    Thanks so much!

Baby was in ER. Now I have a $600 bill just for the consult to let us out of the hospital. What to do?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 11:14 AM PST

Hi all you insurance masterminds. I need assistance if someone can help me. Back in Jan my dog bit my baby. It took an awful lot of people to cover this situation and some of them I don't recall. We have the obvious ones of the surgeon, the ambulance, the anesthesia, then there's this other one that stood out because it's another $600 for the "outpatient consult", which to the best of my knowledge was some doctor who came in, looked at him, spent perhaps maybe at best 5 minutes telling us to keep it clean and put bacitracin on it. Is it normal to have so many bills? Is there anything I can do to fight this? I think that's insane that someone can just walk in, perform some kind of "consultation" and bill me without me even knowing that is what will happen. If I recall correctly I think he must have been the person we had to get approval from to be released. Even though I don't believe he was involved in working on him at all. Am I just stuck with this bill? Please let me know. I'm now swimming in bills, so any little bit I can get away from would be great! Thank you.

    What is the ACV payment?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2018 03:10 AM PST

This illustrates a disagreement I'm having with my insurance. Just imagine the numbers are bigger.

Suppose you own a book, its Actual Cash Value (ACV) is 50, its Replacement Cost Value (RCV) is 90, and your policy limit is 50.

Suppose your policy has replacement terms, but allows you "to make a claim for the actual cash value of the loss before repairs or replacement is completed."

What would the insurer pay if the book becomes total loss, you make the ACV claim, and choose ultimately not to replace? Is the payout $10 or $50, pick a side, argue why.

I may have committed Insurance Fraud. How fucked am I?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 05:52 PM PST

Going to try to explain this as briefly and as accurately as possible.

In 2016 I didn't have a job so I sought out free medi-care (I'm in California). I found a job in 2017 but I didn't update my income until about November of 2017. During the months I had the medi-care I did use it, visiting the doctor here and there but nothing too major. I knew I was procrastinating but I continued to fuck up and brush it aside.

Now that I'm doing my '17 taxes (Seeing a pattern here? Lol) I have to report any health coverage I had. I don't want to lie but I do want to know before I proceed what I could do to make this right and also simply; How fucked am I?

    Thanks for reading

    Working Holiday to Canada

    Posted: 06 Mar 2018 01:23 AM PST

    Gday from Australia,

I'll be soon heading off to Canada for 12+ months and I'm trying to suss out what I should do for insurance when it comes to snow sports.

I'm planning to get comprehensive insurance for the full 12 months. This doesn't cover me for injuries from participating in snow sports. The insurer I want to go with can only add snow sport cover to the 12 month package, adding an extra $700 to the deal which is pretty steep.

It means I'm covered for snow sport injuries for the full 12 months, but I'm not planning to be doing snow sports the entire time I'm there. I might do some short trips through winter, not really planning to work in the ski fields either though it could happen.

Is there anything stopping me from getting a seperate cover while I'm in Canada just for those short snow trips? Either with an Aussie or Canadian insurer? I think it would be cheaper this way but I don't know if it's possible?

Please bestow your insurance wisdom upon this thread 🙏

Water Main Ruptured Beneath my Home

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 05:33 PM PST

Hello! I'm hoping someone could give me some advice or understanding.

My home that was built in the 50s, and I have owned for 1.5 years, recently began flooding in the basement. It is the middle of winter here in the midwest, which lead us to ask the city water folks to inspect once it starting getting more than damp, and they were able to determine that the water main does in fact run beneath our foundation (as opposed up to the house) and to the other end of the house. This broken water main is causing some pretty good flooding in the basement.

Our insurance seems to think that this is simply not covered. They are willing to pay for opening the floor, inspecting the cause of the break, and then patching up the concrete. This seems wrong to me. What do you guys think? I don't have my policy handy, I'm working on locating it now.

Best option for car insurance for someone who drives a lot of different cars (non owner/rentals)?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2018 12:35 AM PST

I don't have a car of my own but used my moms car for a few months recently and had purchased insurance so I could be covered.

I just recently started doing some work for someone who rents out cars on a peer to peer car sharing platform (Turo) and is going to let me use whichever ones are available if I want.

I want to make sure I have insurance if I don't rent the car out through Turo, but am not sure what the best way to do so is so that I can be covered with any car I drive. (Also, I don't have a credit card so no coverage through that).

What kind of coverage/policy would be best for this situation? Are there any companies that offer this type of coverage?

    English critical illness cover

    Posted: 06 Mar 2018 12:22 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

I'm interested in getting something like this: http://www.aia.com.hk/en/our-products/critical-illness-protection/protect-elite-ultra.html

But the only issue is that I am not particularly motivated to pay the currency conversion fees and other things. So I'd like to find a similar cover in the UK. The good thing about this cover is that you get good cover, and it's for life. If you don't claim, you eventually get all of the premiums back with a wad of interest. I like the investment part of this.

The main trouble is I don't know all the key words and phrases, so I don't really know what to look for in the UK, and where to look. I was wondering if anyone knew where to start? Return of premiums (ROP) doesn't quite seem like the same kind of thing, because there's no interest on the premiums.

Thanks for any info in advance!

    In wall drain leak

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 11:08 PM PST

I was hoping to get some advice or referral. I'm pretty sure we have a well concealed failed drain in a second story bathroom wall. No visible damage or moisture upstairs. Unfortunately i didn't notice until downstairs floor started showing signs. Went to the crawlspace and noticed some small puddles but no visible drips. Started isolating sources until the drips started above two drain pipes. I want to be careful to get it well covered by insurance.

Kaiser won't refer me to neurologist?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 08:34 AM PST

Hi everyone, I posted in r/migraines and they suggested I post in here. Hope you all can help.

I've had migraines forever. I've had Kaiser for probably 10 years now, both in Southern and Northern California (currently in Northern California). No matter how hard I try they won't refer me to a neurologist and I don't understand why. My PCP simply tells me there are more/different medications to try. I visit the ER sometimes once a month for intractable migraines that require IV fluids and medications.

Currently on: Topamax 100mg (working up to 200mg) MigraineStop (Magnesium, Zinc, Passionflower, Crampbark) Imitrex 50mg when needed Flexeril 10mg when needed (doesn't do anything) Multivitamin Metformin 1000mg (for PCOS) Oral birth control (for PCOS)

PCP wants to add: Riboflavin 200mg twice daily Butterbur 75mg twice daily

I'm just frustrated of being in pain and I feel like a neurologist is the next step, especially after having migraines for 20 years. If you break a bone, they refer you to orthopedics, if you have cancer, they refer you to oncology, if you have depression, they refer you to a psychologist, etc. Why are migraines/neurology different?

    Thanks for listening.

Can someone under 25 be given a rental car?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 12:36 PM PST

I found myself in a situation where someone hit my car and drove away, left it totaled and my insurance company (liberty mutual) offers rental cars if your car is in an accident which is something I have on my policy. Since I'm only 18 and it can't regularly get a rental car what happens?

MediCal (medicaid?) Vs. Platninum Marketplace insurance (please read body)?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 06:10 PM PST

Lost job/platinum insurance, seeking new job making 45k/yr, applied via covered california in meantime. Not eligible for marketplace with no income, they gave me MediCal (medicaid?). Whats the difference between MediCal and Platinum Marketplace insurance? I was diagnosed with sleep apnea just before losing coverage, in the middle of testing for more serious conditions possibly causing the apnea. So I may find myself needing the best care possible.

My concerns are: -The possibility i have cancer -Paying the least amount in long term medical costs if i do have it -Wide variety of treatment options -Whether i lose medi cal if i get a job paying 45k or if i will be eligible to switch to platinum when i get a job -that medi cal will be sufficoent quality and timely care -that plat will give sufficient quality and timely care

I really want to finish testing asap, so need to know my best bet.

$6000 bill from the electric company for a broken telephone pole due to auto accident.

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 01:59 PM PST

My wife slid in some snow and into a telephone pole a couple months ago. She broke a the pole so it needed to be sistered up with another pole and the wires were moved. The car was totaled but we did not put in a formal claim with insurance for the it. We did alert insurance it happened but we did not want them to be involved with the possible exception of the pole when the bill arrived.

I can hopefully work out a payment plan with the electric company(N. Grid) to and just pay out of pocket instead of going through insurance and paying a surcharge.

Would it be better to go through insurance with the possibility of being found not at complete fault due to inclement weather?

Can I switch a claim from my private insurance to workers' comp?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 05:16 PM PST

Back in January I injured my back working a second job. There was no specific moment at which I injured it, but I worked a lot of hours leading up to the opening of a show, and my back just had had enough. I ended up in urgent care, who then referred me to a specialist, who is now sending me bills for the amout my insurance didn't cover. When I went to urgent care, I just handed over the insurance card for the insurance I get through my main job. I didn't even think about using workers' comp. Can I possibly have this claim changed over to workmans' comp? I was truly ignorant when I used my private insurance, and I don't want to turn this into a fraud accusation against me, but I don't think I should be paying these bills, nor should my insurance. What are my options?

I have explained the situation to the company I was working for and they told me to come file a report, and they may cover the bills I am receiving, but again, I don't want to turn this into a fraud.

    Insurance ClusterF*&()

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 04:32 PM PST

Dear Reddit, up until last week I thought I was adequately covered. I had a separate policy for my $4000 bicycle so that I didnt have to make a claim on my homeowners, but it turns out that because I added an aftermarket motor and the battery was larger than 750 watts, it was never covered. Then, my auto insurance lapsed. Turns out that I was getting letters in the mail saying my CC wasnt going through (my card number got changed cause my account was compromised), so my auto got canceled. My broker re quoted the policy and suddenly it was $400 more a year. F that, so I compared Metromile, Progressive and all the others and ended up getting a policy with Geico. Well, turns out that my umbrella wont cover over Geico, so I have to get a different umbrella policy. Now we get to the Homeowners. Sometimes people come to my house to drop stuff off and pick it up related to my work. Geico wont cover an instance where someone got hurt if that were to happen, so I thought my business insurance would. They said yes, if someone tripped and fell while on my property for a business reason that my policy would cover me, but I asked what would happen if my house burned down due to business? They said that since I only operate 200 square feet as a business from my home, that my home owners should cover me, but my home owners wont cover me if the loss is business related. I feel stuck. I just want to make sure I have the right insurance.

Now I dont have adequate home owners, im over insured for a business loss that will never happen and under insured in areas that matter if the loss is business related. I dont have an umbrella policy and my bike is no longer covered, so I would have to file a claim on my home owners, risking an increased premium. ACK!!!!

Got my state farm auto insurance renewal in the mail, says my policy is able to be "re-rated" using a credit-based insurance score once every 12 months, should I do this?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 10:45 AM PST

I thought this was done automatically every renewal or something similar, on the form it says it could result in a lower rate, no change in rate, or a higher rate. I doubt I have a bad score, if it's based on credit as much as it sounds.

If it matters I have liability only, I'm 33, car 2002 Saturn, AZ, 100/300/100 with emergency road service, $51 month.

Question about insurance following an accident (CA)

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 02:18 PM PST

I was in an accident in Los Angeles about 3 months ago. I was making a right turn off an exit in the left lane. The street we were turning onto was a two lane road. The left lane could turn left, right, or go straight, with the right lane being right turn only. When I was making the turn, a van tried to switch lanes in the intersection and hit my right door.

I only have liability insurance. He was driving a company van that was insured. My car took most of the damage. There were no witnesses that stopped or anything. We called the CHP, but they said as it happened in the intersection after the exit, it was out of their jurisdiction. And the LAPD only comes out if there's city damage or someone is hurt, neither of which happened. So no police report.

When everything was said and done with insurance companies, both my company and theirs said it was word v. word, and each took their client's side. My company isn't paying his, he's not paying mine. The other driver told his company and mine that I tried to drive into his lane. (in reality, right after the accident, he asked why I didn't go straight, because I don't think he realized that I could turn right.) When I was denied by the other company, I appealed it to the agent's supervisor, but he upheld the denial.

My question is basically this: am I just SOL here? Like, I was just driving to work and this guy drove into my car. And now I'm just screwed? Is there anything I can do? Or is this just a lesson in insurance sucking not always being the most helpful?

Uninsured and at fault, how to proceed? CA

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 01:45 PM PST

Long story short my best friend gets in a car crash while taking a left turn. She's obviously at fault no matter how much she screams the other person was speeding.

The other person filed with their insurance despite reassurances that she was able to pay out of pocket in cash. It was declared a total loss. Now from my understanding the car's value isn't worth more than 4K on the greatest of days. It's a 2011 Hyundai Accent. Now granted the other driver gets a full 4K paycheck how much of that 4K does my friend owe considering the car will be junked for parts at the discretion of the insurance company? Seems like a unfair win win situation for the insurance company if they get to recoup their money and get to turn a profit.

Question about car insurance after accident.

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 12:37 PM PST

I got into an accident recently. I was at fault. I assumed insurance things happened. 30 days later I get a letter from a lawyer firm representing her asking for my info and account on the accident.

My insurance said she has never contacted them. They said don't respond and to forward them the letter.

Question 1: Is this the right course of action? I do not want to set myself to get screwed over.

Question 2: I have kept my address at my parents ever since I moved out since I still rent near by and move around. I currently live about 20 miles from them. I still file everything at their address (taxes, bills, loans, car insurance, and so on) Other than my name on the rent I have nothing on the other address. Could this allow the insurance company to drop me or find an out of covering me?

    Thanks!

    Car insurance accident

    Posted: 05 Mar 2018 11:14 AM PST

So, about a year ago I was involved in a car accident. The cars that were involved was a Chevy Silverado 2003 and a Honda Accord 2002, and at the end it came to be my fault. ( eh could have gone 50/50 but whatevers ) This was my first accident and I was 19 at the time. It made my insurance go from 110 to about 350 ish. Now what i want to know is there any way I can lower this ? Or am I stuck paying this much for one little accident for the next few years? I am also a student .. not sure if there is discount for that? My insurance is All-State. Thanks ! Oh yeah and this is in California, idk if that is important

So, am I good carrying TX insurance around in FL? Or should I get insurance through Geico in Florida?
