I think my mom's business is going to fail before its even begun. small business

I think my mom's business is going to fail before its even begun.

    Posted: 09 Mar 2018 05:11 PM PST

I wasn't really sure where to post this, so this sub seemed appropriate and I was hoping to get some insight from people with some experience in business ownership.

My mom recently told me she was going to be taking over as the owner of a 6 chair salon (I was told Wednesday and the paperwork was signed today). While she has mentioned wanting to open one in the past, this was a complete surprise because we've never actually sat down and talked about it before. I understand that it is her money and I will do my best to support her as much as a high school student can, but I can't help but feel like this won't end well. She has approximately 5 years experience as a hair stylist, with some gaps in between due to health issues, so pretty much around a junior stylists level. There is also another salon within an extremely short distance, which poses another problem.

Maybe it's just because I'm only finding out now, but everything feels so rushed. There doesn't seem to be much set in place right now in terms of planning (possible reno, hiring staff, experience, competition, etc.) and with the takeover date approaching it's hard not to be nervous. I tried to talk it over a bit with her the other night but she told me not to worry about. I don't want to tell my mom not to do what she considers her end goal, but I also don't want her to lose a significant amount of money as a single parent nearing the point where retirement begins to pop-up.

    Is Corporate Culture a Bully?

    Posted: 09 Mar 2018 09:05 AM PST

I've been thinking about why I started my business - and a lot of it has to do with what I perceived to be unless and antiquated Corporate philosophies.

After running my own business, and helping other solo pros to grow theirs, I'm seeing that Corporate Culture is ingrained so deeply that it's the cause of a lot of our struggles as business owners.

For example - A business owner doesn't understand how Marketing and Sales work together because in the corporate world these functions are in silos.

OR 40 hours a week are required for success more so than what you do in those hours. (I would even argue that the "hustle" mantra - taken to it's extreme - is a version of this that we've adopted into the entrepreneur community)

I'm calling this the Bully of Corporate Culture because it pushes you around and wants you to fail. So, here's the question for you - in what ways do you see the "Bully" in entrepreneur culture, or in what ways have you seen it in your business?

Problems charging with Square - most transactions getting declined by the clients' banks

    Posted: 09 Mar 2018 08:36 PM PST

I'm helping a business switch from ICVerify to Square for their credit card processing. The business's clients are long-time members with their credit cards already on file with the business, so everything is being done through the Square terminal rather than through swiping or invoicing.

Square allowed us to charge a handful of cards, but most of the cards were declined. We contacted Square support, and they said the cards were getting declined on our clients' side and that there's nothing they can do. We later got a call from one of our clients saying that their bank blocked their card for fraudulent activity due to our attempted charge through Square. The client had the bank unblock his card and approve the transaction, and then we were able to charge his card and it succeeded.

Has this happened for anyone else? These are small charges, around $30-300. We can't risk getting more clients' cards blocked by their banks, or having their banks call them about our charge, since a lot of our clients are VIP's, corporation execs, etc. We never had anything like this happen when using ICVerify for 10+ years.

Should we look for a "real" replacement for ICVerify? I thought Square was established well-enough to avoid getting its charges declined by banks? What's going on? Can we fix this somehow?

Gearing up for deliveries, looking for inventory software suggestions.

    Posted: 09 Mar 2018 08:20 PM PST

Hey everyone! I bet this place is a vault of great information so any advice is great. My grandfather had a hot sauce in Florida grocery stores back in the 80's. It had a following but times were different back then and he had to drive over 4 hours to deliver the peppers and transport the sauce himself. After a few years my grandmother was like no more.

So that was it. Until now, I've decided to bring it back. I've already got some retail stores and restaurants lined up to carry the sauce and the bottling company should have it in 3 weeks time. What I need to focus on now is inventory tracking and invoices and such. I assume a program/app exists that is simple for my needs.

    Thanks for any help.

Vendor's law firm says I owe for a transaction I have no knowledge of. What next?

    Posted: 09 Mar 2018 05:23 AM PST

I opened and closed a sole proprietorship back in 2015, in California. I placed one order with a vendor that was paid via COD.

Recently, a law firm sent me a letter requesting a balance due for an amount that does not match the amount of the order I placed with the vendor.

I replied to their letter with a template letter I found about debt validation. Their response was essentially, "This was a commercial transaction, not a consumer debt, so we do not have to provide any of the information you are asking for." Presumably, they are a smart law firm and recognized that I was following the 'debt validation' path, and FDCPA does not cover these situations, which I am learning now.

I didn't actually quote any laws in my letter, simply asked for more information about this balance due. They requested my e-mail address to send more documentation. I would rather continue this communication via snail mail, as I don't want to give this firm another 'data point' about me.

I contacted the original vendor, and they could only verify the claim was legitimate and they stated that are prohibited by law from providing any further details after it had been referred to their law firm.

I'm looking for some guidance about how to handle myself in this situation.

My small business of selling designer clothing is constantly expanding, increasing sales, etc. At what point should I consider investing more money than usual? And what factor should determine the amount of money spent on inventory?

    Posted: 09 Mar 2018 09:07 PM PST

I currently buy inventory, sell it online, and typically profit a small margin. Recently, the profit has been enough to be considered a side-job, but I still see room for expansion! Should I contact an accountant, or someone who specializes in my field? My questions are general, "rule-of-thumb"-type questions. ANY feedback regarding some basic principles is appreciated!

Does anyone use Float for cash flow forecasting?

    Posted: 09 Mar 2018 09:02 PM PST

I am the part owner of a small fashion jewelery company and I currently manage all of our budgets, sales forecasting and cash flow projections in a Google sheet. Someone recommended Float to my business partner and I've started the trial to test it out but curious if anyone here has experiences to share, comments, tips or even other software recommendations. Anyone?

Pipe dream of owning a restaurant

    Posted: 09 Mar 2018 10:49 AM PST

My wife and I have a long term dream of owning and running a coffee shop/restaurant. She's passionate about food and we have a few ideas as to what we'd like to do but everything is still extremely preliminary.

I understand that we should have a much clearer vision before committing to something like this, which is why I'm here.

What are some things to know/focus on learning before diving into the restaurant business? What are some good places to pick up these skills? Neither of us are currently involved with restaurants career wise. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

What is a good advertising solution for a landscaping business?

    Posted: 09 Mar 2018 07:59 PM PST

I usually use Craigslist but they are going to start charging for "services offered" posts. HomeAdvisor keeps calling me but I've heard good things about Thumbtack. Craigslist keeps the phone ringing and me busy. What is a good site/app that will keep me busy?

Where to start when launching your business?

    Posted: 09 Mar 2018 06:18 PM PST

So last year september I cofounded an LLC in California for web dev projects and earned some income. My cofounder is a foreigner on OPT, and doesn't take any pay.

Tax season is here and am just now starting to realize I probably screwed up since all I did was legalzoom my LLC, and paid myself various amounts at various dates in crypto (bitcoin) to my personal bank account (never set up a company account).

No idea how to do payroll, no idea what gov forms (fed & state) I need to fill out and/or fill as well (i.e. w-4, employee withholding allowance certificate, I-9, anything else?). Don't have an expense sheet, don't have receipts, mileage, basically nothing.

I have an EIN, and a CA Employer Account Number.

Is there any step-by-step guide on practices after incorporating? Advice aside from get a lawyer/accountant?

Question for anyone that’s registered an LLC (Especially if in NC)

    Posted: 09 Mar 2018 05:44 PM PST

Does anyone know the difference between the "Business Address" of the member/organizer vs the Principal Office Address in the registration form. Is it the same? I'm thinking of using a virtual office (aka just an address with Regus). I know that I can select that I don't have a Principal Office but I think you need it later.

Are all these types of insurance cover appropriate for my social networking website?

    Posted: 09 Mar 2018 04:28 PM PST

I run a website with over 100,000+ members. It's primarily a social network that encourages meet-ups in person. The secondary element is where the revenue comes from -- a platform for where independent contractors provide physical therapy/massage treatment to members interested. I'm being vague but it's not as dodgy as it sounds.

Before I talk to an insurance company, what types of cover are sensible for this type of website/business?

    My current limited understanding:

General/Commercial Liability Insurance will help with Libel, Slander, Copyright, Privacy (Client's private details being leaked).

Public liability: Public suing over injury/damage that people have meeting with another member on my site (e.g. sexual assault). Or if an independent contractor/client end up doing intentional or accidental harm to each other.

Professional indemnity: Do I need this at all? I'm not really providing advice or work. I'm hosting a platform.

Niche retail store struggling for foot traffic

    Posted: 09 Mar 2018 02:42 PM PST

Looking for ideas to boost foot traffic to a small retail store that specializes in dance and gymnastics clothing and accessories.

We've done rewards cards, social media, etc...they all help, but we just can't get over the hump to really get the store performing.

Any ideas out there? Especially those that don't cost a lot of money to try.

Are There businesses that you can hire to spread bad social media about your competitio?

    Posted: 09 Mar 2018 01:35 PM PST

Throwaway because there isn't a good way to ask this question without looking sketchy, plus I think as of right now if I'm right bringing attention might make it worse.

I run a small business, and we have overwhelmingly good feedback on social media, but lately I have been noticing some people saying bad things out some of our posts, but when you follow the profiles they are mostly empty beyond the initial photo. are there companies out there you can hire to do this kind of thing? if so what can I do to combat it?

Naming a “flat pack furniture” company

    Posted: 09 Mar 2018 06:32 AM PST

    Hi!

Don't know if it's okay to post this. If not, please remove.

It's been like 3 month that my girlfriend and I are trying to find a name for a flat pack furniture company. Thing is, I'm in Quebec, and I do have to register the company to make business here. It has to be a name 1- in French 2- in English with à French word after like "mobilier" which mean furniture 3- not a real word like "woud" for wood I guess.

We will also make other thing then just furniture. We will be making all sorts of thing with my CNC router, from furniture, home and wall decor, lamp, dog house, etc etc. here's my Pinterest board Everything in there is inspiration/goal.

We are our current idea: 1- prism ( prisme in French, which is pretty easy to add or delete a letter for French or English version) BUT it's already taken (Prysm) by a girl that makes jewelry 2- weekend (in the French dictionary as well) 3- FxS (our initial) 4- May (easy to spell, easy to prononce) 5- Boudoir (but since it's definition it's a female living room, didn't like the it was a female thing. Wouldn't rather like something more neutral, but I do like the way it sound and all, just don't like the definition. 6- better ? Just came up with it

We also thought of snap, or cub' or things like that but it was too childish. We'd prefer a "high end name" like May or boudoir, sound more high end than snap.

    So that's it.

Thanks for your help! Even if you gives name in English. Maybe it'll give us new ways of thinking, or just translate it in English.

Best practice/way to reconcile cash across multiple locations.

    Posted: 09 Mar 2018 04:55 AM PST

Currently we are counting down the drawer at the end of the day, subtracting the starting bank, and then making a deposit. However, unless the deposit is done daily our accountant says it is a pain in the butt to reconcile; we use QuickBooks Online.

Can anyone shed some light on some best practices or what is working for them to make this smoother?

    Software Firm floor plan?

    Posted: 09 Mar 2018 09:57 AM PST

Looking to move a small software firm with ~7 employees that has grown out of their 800sqft office. Space is so tight that we can't add any new hires.

I'm looking to move to 1500-2000sqft. This is a good chance to think about floor plans. Previously it's been just fitting people where possible!

Should the two owners (one is a programmer, other is business side) have their own offices? Should they be in a common room with the other employees? Do you like or encourage cubicles?

    Any advice is appreciated!
