Health Insurance retroactively removed due to fathers error causing $25K bill to daughter??? Posted: 08 Mar 2018 03:04 PM PST Hey all, Sorry in advance for the long post, but I tried to convey all the information for what we think is a very unique situation. Im posting looking for advice for my girlfriend. She is currently a 24 year old grad student who files her taxes as an independent. Her mother and father divorced in 2011, and part of the divorce settlement involved her father signing a National Medical Support Notice to his employer stating that he would cover her and her 19 year old younger brothers health insurance until they both turned 26. He is a retired NYS employee with at least 20 years of state service, and their insurance was through Empire Plan Insurance. After her father retired he was being sent bills for the insurance premium from NYS and was throwing them out, saying he intended to pay them when he sold his house a few years down the road. My girlfriend did not know that, and has been having doctors visits and medical procedures as normal for the past three years. Last week her father was notified that he and his dependents no longer had insurance, and that their plan was being cancelled and they would have to find new insurance. My girlfriend called the insurance company to confirm this and get more information. During the course of the conversation, she discovered that the insurance company was retroactively cancelling their insurance, with the cancellation date set in 2015. The insurance company was notified by the past employer to set this cancellation, and cannot do anything to fix it from their end (according to them) as this was all started from his employer (NYS). The insurance company said that they will be sending out claim denial letters to all of the doctors she has visited and for all of the claims she has filed for medical services since the cancellation date. Essentially, the insurance company will be getting refunds for all of the money they have paid doctors for her. They informed her that the doctors would then be billing her directly since she was the patient and is over 18. She estimates approximately $20K in medical bills since 2015. The interesting part is that since 2015 she has visited at least 5 or 6 doctors, and all of them have been able to bill the insurance successfully, and the insurance company never flagged the account as being not paid. We think it is very strange that three years went by, with multiple approved claims, before the insurance company or employer caught on to what was happening. Her father wants her to contact every doctor she has visited and put all of her medical bills in his name so he can negotiate and pay them over time. They both do not want her credit affected because of his mistakes and they want the responsibility off of her. She has started hearing back from some doctors - some of them have no issue listing him as the responsible party and some are having trouble understanding the situation. She is very concerned about the whole situation, as she thinks that she may be held liable for upwards of $20K in medical bills that she is not going to be able to pay as a student. Even though it looks like she will be able to have all the bills in her fathers name, she is still concerned they could go after her if and when her father tries to get out of paying again. I also want to stress that over the last three years she believed she was fully covered and had heard absolutely nothing from NYS or the insurance company or her father saying otherwise. We want to make sure we get the best outcome and that in the end no liability is on her, and that her father agrees to accept all liability and all responsibility for these charges due to his negligence. TL;DR girlfriend's dad stopped paying insurance premium in 2015, insurance company just cancelled and set cancellation date to 2015 and is retroactively denying all medical claims since. $20K in medical bills at play. Posted: 08 Mar 2018 01:09 PM PST My son got into an accident in November which was a simple fender bender but he's 17. He's got 1 point on our insurance now (but I think he may have 6 points on his state license due to a speeding ticket) Anyway, the speeding ticket was dismissed and he wasn't sited for the fender bender. But when our policy documents were renewed in March, our policy jumped $1400 every 6 months. I think something is screwy with the way GEICO is applying (or calculating) the risk here and need to know how to get someone to review. I called the contact number and the first line of support gave me the runaround about how insurance rates were going up across the board and my son now had 1 point against him. Our previous rates was 1900 per 6 months (5 cars) and now its 3300 per 6 months. [link] [comments] |
Geico Claim for car bumper repair Posted: 09 Mar 2018 12:09 AM PST If someone could explain this, I'm just slightly confused. So I needed my bumper repaired so I took it to caliber collision. They gave me a printed estimate of 1,375.00$. I knew I couldn't afford that, so I called my bank to report a claim instead. They told me it would be a 500$ deductible. So I agreed. Fast forward to today, I go to pick up my car, and pay the 500$ deductible in full. Then I looked through the receipt/folio they gave me when I got home and I saw the Grand total amount was 289.00$. It doesn't match up to the estimate whatsoever. I'm not sure if I'm missing something here, if someone could explain? I payed 500$ for a 289.00$ repair. I would've just payed it out of pocket if I knew. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Mar 2018 09:18 PM PST I was coming down a one way street and t-boned a woman driving into the road from a side street. I had no stop sign, and tried to brake before I saw her but wasn't able to in time. She had stop signs going both ways, and I did not see whether she stopped or not. My car is totaled, I'm not sure about hers. Working with my insurance as of now, but I don't have collision (I KNOW I KNOW) and I am hoping that if she is found at fault I can get a pay out on her end. My adjustor has said that she found the other driver 100% at fault, because she did not have the right of way and I did. She also said that even if she stopped, it was her responsibility to see if the roadway was clear. Liability hasn't been assigned yet, but any advice is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
I got in a car accident. Opinions on who is at fault? Posted: 08 Mar 2018 09:01 PM PST The accident occurred at a Costco Gas station and there are three gas pumps lined next to each other. The car I was in an accident with (I'll call it car B) was parked in the middle at station 2. Station 3 was open, so I drove up and reversed into that station. As I was reversing, car B went over into the left pass lane (image attached) and we side swiped each other. Who do you fellow Redditors think is at fault? Driver B wanted to say we were both at fault, however, We decided to let the insurance to decide. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Food gone bad in rental fridge that broke down Posted: 08 Mar 2018 08:44 PM PST Not sure if this is the sub to ask this, but my girlfriend rents an apartment that has an old fridge and the compressor burnt up, very nearly causing a fire. Nothing was damaged aside from the fact that she had just purchased groceries and there was about $100 worth of food that went bad. The maintenance person told her she should argue for a new refrigerator due to the poor condition it's in, and said she may try to get reimbursed for the food as well. She has renters insurance, but I'm assuming the deductible is higher than what she'd get back. Is this something the apartment complex should reimburse? Not really sure why the maintenance person would tell her that, unless it was maybe neglect, but I'm not sure on how the rules for that work? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Mar 2018 08:18 PM PST My dad died about a month ago, the property and assets are in probate. When talking to another insurance company about his car I was told that vacant homes cannot be insured. This seems totally wrong to me. I cannot have been the only one in this position. I do not live in the area, his house is about 2500 miles away. The neighbors are looking after the house, the water is shut off and the heat is turned down to 50 degrees. We plan on selling the house after the probate is done. What should I be doing at this point [link] [comments] |
Old (6 yrs) already paid hospital bill coming up as not paid Posted: 08 Mar 2018 08:09 PM PST My friend was in a car accident around 6 years ago and had surgery on his knee. He was under his father's insurance, and the bill was supposedly paid off by the insurance. About 2 years ago, he started getting a bill for the surgery (roughly $300). He has been ignoring it till now apparently, but asked me about it offhand today. Part of the problem to figuring this out now is that he is no longer under his fathers insurance, and neither is his father using the same insurance company as back then. His father told him to ignore it, but I feel like its better to get this sorted out. He was living in California at the time. He now lives in Texas and only received the letter due to having the Post Office forward mail to his new address. I advised him to call the hospital to ask to check if this is legitimate first, and then try to contact the old insurance company to see if he can get any information on the payment. The statute of limitations has passed already, but would this restart it? He would rather not have this on his credit report if it somehow goes to collections. Is there anything else that can/should be done? [link] [comments] |
Career Advice: Getting into Insurance (California) Posted: 08 Mar 2018 06:54 PM PST I think I want to build a career in insurance, and naturally I have some questions. Is pre-licensing education all that's required before taking the state exam? What license/ins. type would get my foot in the door somewhere for an entry level position? I am unsure if my interest is Property/Casualty, Life, or Auto. Are there companies that will be interested in hiring me without insurance experience once I'm licensed? I understand I may not start as an agent/broker right away, what job titles should I search for when just starting out? The end goal is a career that I will be able to work my way up and into retirement. I'm 33 this month, little college experience. My experience is providing tech support and customer service. I've actually worked for Apple corporate, but resigned because my mental health suffered while taking back-to-back calls from people wanting to yell at me about their iPhones not working right. I'm great at helping people, explaining why they need something, but mostly need them to come to me first. Would I make it in this industry? Thank you to those who took time to read all of this. Any constructive advice is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
CA: collision repair, car already in shop, adjuster/insurance won’t pay for full labor. Posted: 08 Mar 2018 06:17 PM PST Received a call from one of my adjusters, appears to be a dispute between my insurance and the body shop on the number of hours of labor for a replacement part. Shop wants like 9 hours labor for this part, adjuster/insurance will only pay for 4. The car has been in the shop approx 2.5 weeks. If the shop and insurance can't agree on the number of hours am I on the hook personally for the difference in labor+deductible? That's essentially what the adjuster called and explained to me today but I've yet to get anything in writing from either party yet. [link] [comments] |
Geico price increased twice, 50% each time during last year, with no reason Posted: 08 Mar 2018 08:03 AM PST I will try to change my insurance company, as this sounds fishy. Why would they bump the price twice if I was not at fault at any accident? Btw, I had one accident in October, and the claim is still open (i was hit from the back, bumper to bumper) and they are not contacting me about it. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Mar 2018 11:07 AM PST Hi I was recently involved in an accident for which I was found to be 50% at fault. I have liability coverage only. So, as it stands the other persons' insurance will pay for half the repairs to my car and I need to pay for the rest out of pocket. My car is currently in my home garage and is not drivable. My understanding is their insurance company will send out an appraiser to look at the car and they will pay me half of what he thinks it will cost to have the car repaired at a shop with new parts. I'd like to do as much of the mechanical repairs as I can myself with used parts. I may even opt not to repair the cosmetic damage. My question is, how do I ensure I get a fair estimate form the appraiser without the use of a repair shop? Also, if they decide to "total" the car, how does that work with the 50/50 fault? I assume they can opt to pay me half the value of the car, but what then happens to the car itself? Other info: The car is a 2006 Volvo c70. The damage was to the right rear quarter and wheel. Two airbags and all the seatbelts went off. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Mar 2018 12:44 PM PST Howdy! I'm partnering with the owner and it's a long standing independent agency in the greater Kansas City area that hasn't done much of anything in the last 6 years or so. I've been in Insurance for just shy of 6 years and have contemplated going into agency ownership for a while now. I started off with State Farm then moved on to more of a specific niche E&S type of product agency(they recruited me into it), where I've been for the last 3 years. The owner also owns the agency I've been at and has decided that I'm the one to help get his brokerage back up and running. We'll be focusing on personal lines, commercial and life/benefits. On to the point of this post. If you could go back and restart your agency/brokerage, what would you do differently? Are there carriers to absolutely avoid? Would you focus more on commercial, or building up life? Any other pointers would be greatly appreciated, like any software you might use that makes life easier. I'm licensed in MO, IA and KS and will probably be adding a couple more state licenses as well. Appreciate any and all pieces of advice. [link] [comments] |
Adding a newborn to mom’s insurance after already putting her on dad’s Posted: 08 Mar 2018 04:26 PM PST Hello! So my husband and I added our newborn to his insurance but discovered that he read his family deductible wrong. It would make more sense to add her to my plan. Problem is, she's already on his and a card just got here today. We are still within the 30 day window so is it too late to cancel her on his and add her to mine? If I were to lose or leave my job (not anticipating it) would that be considered a "life event" worthy of adding her back to his insurance if we had to? Just want to make sure all our bases are covered! Can't leave a newborn uninsured! [link] [comments] |
Missed special enrollment for newborn, options? Posted: 08 Mar 2018 04:03 PM PST Two weeks after my son was born I logged on to my benefits site in an effort to add my son to our insurance plan. The site required his social security which we did not have yet; this form field was a hard stop and I couldn't submit the application without it. I received his social security card when he was about six weeks old, well outside of the special enrollment period. I filed an appeal with my HR and am hoping they will allow me to add him now rather than waiting for next years open enrollment. Their decision can take up to 31 days. Regardless, I am worried about him being essentially not covered for up to 31 days if they accept the appeal or longer otherwise. What are my options for getting him insured independently for now? One ER visit for a fever would be a huge blow financially. Thanks [link] [comments] |

Michigan, no Auto insurance, hit in the back end by another driver Posted: 08 Mar 2018 07:50 AM PST Okay, so my SO and I have a lease that goes back in less than a week. We canceled the insurance early since we didn't plan to drive the car anywhere for the last week we had it. Than our other car had a flat and we took this car to follow it to a tire repair shop by our house. Well we'd just dropped the other car off and were waiting to make a left when someone slammed into the back end of the car going about 40mph. Her car is in a lot worse of a condition than ours is, but my SO seems to have hurt his neck and my back hurts. (Seatbelts didn't lock, and airbags did not go off.) Anyways the police showed, took down info and said they'd call us later since we were both pretty badly shaken up. We aren't quite sure what to do, we've been trying to read up on what to do now. Could someone please help us? Thank you very much for your time. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Mar 2018 09:52 AM PST I was involved in a hit and run motorcycle accident (the one on the motorcycle) Since the driver left, I just picked up my motorcycle and left. I'm wondering what I should do now since the damages on my motorcycle are kinda bad and I want to use my insurance to fix it. Any advice would be helpful. The accident happened March 7, 2018. Posted: 08 Mar 2018 12:25 PM PST Hey all, I am missing ~12 asphalt roofing shingles due to the windstorm last Friday/Saturday. Aesthetically my home fared better than most in my neighborhood. HOWEVER, during the windstorm, my roof was flapping around just like everyone else's. (I am behind a row of homes that received the brunt of the wind. They are missing 50% of their roofs) I have opened a claim with Travelers, my insurance company. Apparently there are so many claims being opened, they are sending people from the west coast! I had a roofer pop over for about 5 minutes, he said that while my roof "looks fine" if the shingles were really dancing around like I described, repair is out of the question as I will continue to lose shingles. We had ~20mph winds on Tuesday and I lost 3 more shingles. I am a first time homeowner, and this is my first ever insurance claim, so I do not know what to expect. The adjuster is coming on Sunday afternoon, and he told me that assuming he finds enough damage, he will cut me a check on the spot. The cynical side of me says they are going to find a way to get out of paying and just tell me to hire someone to tack down a few new shingles. Anything you can provide me with in the way of navigating the claims process, negotiating, etc. would be great! Thanks all. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Mar 2018 11:33 AM PST Three weeks ago I hurt my back while working and was told to go see a doctor before I could return. A workers comp claim was filed and my job's insurance agreed to pay 80% of my straight time pay for a portion days I was not working.   At some point there was miscommunication and the insurance company payed out for for two additional days on top of days they agreed to pay.   I called in for something unrelated to the issue and just before I hung up the claims handler brought the issue to my attention and asked if I had cashed the check out. I told her I did and she said she'd need to runs some numbers to see how much i'd need to send back. I asked if I could give my credit card details over the phone and she said no and that I'd have to mail a money order to them whenever after they find out how much I owe.   Not being able to work overtime, put means that money is a little short so I don't feel as if I should payout of pocket (gas to drive to post office, buying money order, stamps, envelope, etc) for someone else's mistake.   Would it be wrong to ask about deducting the price of the items listed above from the money I owe and mail in the whatever is left with copies of the receipts when she gets back to me. p.s. I am asking on here prior to bring this up with the claims handler determine how to bring this up without causing too much controversy. [link] [comments] |
Adding insurance temporarily?[car][MD] Posted: 08 Mar 2018 11:17 AM PST Currently my girlfriend drives a corolla that we have on liability only, but recently we had a crazy windstorm that ended up making a tree fall on my neighbors car. Obviously if that happened to her she'd kinda be ruined since it wouldn't be covered. Is it frowned upon to say add comprehensive in the case that something like that was forecasted in the coming weeks or so, and just take it off after the weather calms down? [link] [comments] |
How do other insurance companies know you were in an accident? Posted: 08 Mar 2018 11:09 AM PST When switching insurance companies how can they check or find out if I have been in an accident withing a certain number if years? Does it go into some data base? I recently had a total loss claim and I am checking around for quotes and they always ask if i have been in an accident within 3 years or so. What if I say no and buy the insurance at the quote price? [link] [comments] |
Issue with payment for Employer provided Insurance after leaving. Posted: 08 Mar 2018 10:56 AM PST Ok, So, I just started a new job, and because of when they could get things started for me, I started it on a Tuesday. I finished up my old job the day before, just so I could make sure everything was transferred over well. I just had the one day on the pay period at my old job, and the employer provided insurance ended on my final day, and also the period it covered started that same day. Now, out of my final paycheck, my old employer is charging me the full price for insurance for the entire period, even though I only had it for 1 day in that period. Should this be the case, or am I kinda getting screwed here? [link] [comments] |
Do I need to add my boyfriend to my car insurance if he moves in with me? Posted: 08 Mar 2018 10:49 AM PST He does occasionally drive my car and right now we don't live together so it's fine. But if he moves in, I think I would need to add him to my insurance. Is this correct? [link] [comments] |
